Canada. Freeride. Northshore. Skinnies. Giant hucks. No landings for said giant hucks. These are some of the thoughts that cross the minds of many mountain bikers not intimately familiar with the riding north of the 49th parallel. And I’ll admit it - I was one of these people too.

Any guesses as to the original builder and time period for this classic?

A local dweller on one of the more classic trails.

Old woodwork has been replaced with massive amounts of dirt on Heckyl and Jeckyl. I usually consider trails this jumpy to be new school, but the trail is several generations old now.

Discovering mountain bikes in northern California in the mid-1990s, my friends and I were exposed to endless media of the Froriders as they shredded wild lines all over BC. As impressionable adolescents, we were all thoroughly convinced that the average trail in BC, and likely the rest of Canada, was something to make even the most seasoned of riders fear for their lives. You know the drill - type 2 fun, full commitment, travel insurance, the whole deal. Trails that have obstacles that might seem within grasp, only there is something inherently wrong with the trail, raising the difficulty factor to levels beyond us mortals. To this day, I am still struggling to understand that yes, there are normal trails all over Canada - and lots of really, really good ones!

Rocky Blondin, president of the FVMBA, showed us a few of the trails. Thanks to the FVMBA for helping to keep these trails alive!

One of my favorite things to do while traveling and outside of cell service is to peruse Trailforks. In particular, I love reading the descriptions of the trails that I’ve heard of, but have yet to see myself. The BC region is chock full of such destinations. In the case of the Woodlot, I’d heard about a couple of the specific trails, and assumed they were actually on the Vancouver Northshore. Not the case! Turns out there is a whole valley east of the Northshore. It’s called the Fraser Valley, and it’s loaded with amazing riding.

Woodlot mountain biking trails

Bridges dropping onto log rides. Thank goodness it wasn’t raining!

Located on the border between the cities of Mission and Maple Ridge, the Woodlot was once known for hundreds of gnar-gnar skinnies and woodwork, as well as a mine field of “one hit wonder” jumps that were built to be hit (and filmed) merely once. I had this idea in the back of my mind, but figured with it being a legal riding spot, things would have to be pretty tame.

So many old dinosaurs in the woods, I couldn’t help but imagine the tires (and wheel sizes) that have passed over this in prior generations.

Jeff Kendall-Weed at the Woodlot. Photo by Morgan Taylor https www.foundinthemountains.com
Something that no one ever talks about… With the lack of traffic on the older trails, there lies some hidden gold in between the old woodwork. That wonderful, soft, loamy dirt that has a nice cushion to it means that conditions are great to lean and carve.

It’s always interesting to see how old school riding areas can be re-imagined, especially through the lens of an ever-changing sport. Bikes have sure changed since the Y2K era, as have riding styles and preferences. Some blue trails now are more advanced than many “double blacks” were two decades ago. However, some trails remain the exception, and have always been gnarly. These stand the test of time.

29” wheels were once banned from the Woodlot.

Every now and then you’ll stumble across something noteworthy…

Checking out Hekyl and Jekyl was a treat. It’s a very new school take on an original Woodlot trail, and with a timber line running through the trail’s current path, it’ll be interesting to see how it withstands the upcoming harvest. The creek beds near the trail still bear the remnants of prior trail iterations, all with cedar slats far enough apart that better resemble train tracks than any sort of “bridge” that we might want to ride nowadays.

Heckyl and Jeckyl is a modern freeride masterpiece.

I left the Woodlot stoked to see that many of the original skinny lines, while not heavily ridden, are still in existence. And there are some (fully legal!) jumps that helped quench my hucker thirst. At one point, I remarked to Logan, Morgan, and Rocky that these legal trails were gnarly enough to dwarf the trails in the USA that could land their American builders jail time should authorities discover their handiwork. Luckily, Canada is far more accepting of healthy recreational pursuits.

Well spaced out, public jumps. Can life get better?

+10 points for giving a shout to the builders. Nobody does that. Everybody should do that.
  • 36 2
Thanks guys! They totally help tell the story of the trails in a way that I never could! The advocacy groups are just as important, too.
  • 13 1
Absolutely. Many PB stories ignore the builders. Some (not many but some) even take a steaming dump on the trailwork and that's sad.

Refreshing to see respect for the trailwork. Donate to the FVMBA via trailforks.

Special tip of the hat and lots of fleshwounds to the OG builders, Billy, Jamie, GrumpyG, CoryH, Ewan.

 Don't forget Marcus Burns!

@leelau: thanks for completing the list. It is a long one and full of legends! Fun fact: Mr. Blogg is one of the founders of the club on the original napkin of a constitution.

@JeffWeed is such a great rider and comes at it from a great perspective understanding that the sport stands on the shoulders of the builders. He also sees lines that I didn't know existed. Was a great experience doing this with him.

@JeffWeed: the best part about this is that those trails were built with a lot of weed in mind

I really wanna ride like that guy.

Thanks Gumby, that means a lot to me!
  • 2 0
@JeffWeed: what rear hub is on your bike dude?
  • 1 0
@Ogp69: That's an Industry 9 Torch hub. We had a new mic going for this vid and that makes the hub seem louder than it really is.
  • 32 3
contrary to what this video portrays Myself Marcus and Ewan have done all the new stuff in there completely on our own dime. and have been at it weekly many days per week for a while now. promoting some component brand on the lines we have made is a bit over the top especially when it gave nothing back. FVMBA contributions have been zero to us over the last year that we have gone to town up there. we go through chainsaw chains , oil, fuel, nails , and hand tools out of pocket. future support would be gladly appreciated and id be more than happy to throw creds to the fvmba. But until then sorry if a weird promo video that gives half ass to no creds to the real guys making it happen up there rubs me the wrong way.

ive huffed up and down those runs more times than i can count on my old 2007 v10.
the old shore feel of that hill and the quiet solitude makes it one of my fav places to go.

i have asked the big guy (sorry im real shit with remembering names) when he was workin on shotgun if i could help and all he said was just put some rocks aside when i get a chance.
thanks for the hard work!
  • 4 3
I couldn't agree more dsheffer! You guys have done a lot and I'm sure the fvmba has done little. You may want to keep it that way as associations usually mean dulling things down. Thanks for all your hard work and keep the vids coming. I always enjoy trying to find those builds when I ride up there.
  • 30 0
Hey @dsheffer - love to side bar the conversation about how we can best support you guys. Working through Ryan, we're going to ensure that all proceeds from this effort get into your collective hands. That was the plan from the outset. We did this at the Woodlot because the trails there are some of the most challenging around. You are correct - FVMBA has built zero of the trails in the Woodlot and very few trails in general in the region. It comes from awesome efforts of volunteer builders like yourself, Ewan and the rest. Always has, likely always will.

What we aim to be (like most trail associations) is the umbrella where the appreciative riding community can support builders by membership, donations, etc. I look forward to getting more of that support to you guys because the riding public loves your work. Jeff wanted to do a feature on our area and he was insistent that it highlights the builders and the association.

It is important to note that the FVMBA is the organization which government partners with to ensure legal standing for trails and riding areas. While we have come a long way in getting trails into good standing in the eyes of land managers, we still need to play a role in protecting them from various threats - see the recent SaveSumas campaign and stopping a gravel quarry from closing that entire zone. Fortunately, there's no demand for mining 'loam' or the Woodlot would be under attack too! I take ownership of any wrong-way-rubbing, and look forward to a chance to make it right.
  • 3 3
True spill. The amount of work you guys have done up there is unreal and so appreciated, and the fact that these kooks give no credit is beyond lame. As if people didn't have enough reason to dislike cringeworthy FVMBA posers, smh
  • 1 0
Dylan, thank you for your amazing work on these trails!

 @myfriendgoose: Thanks for your feedback!

Is this Kendall-Weed legal yet??? And where can I get it ?
  • 7 1
 LOL!
  • 4 7
He looks old enough to be legal, are you trying to ride him or smoke him?
  • 15 0
"these legal trails were gnarly enough to dwarf the trails in the USA that could land their American builders jail time should authorities discover their handiwork." Sad but so true, especially here in CO.
  • 9 1
And CO has some great trails, don't get me wrong! BC is much more friendly to the progressive stuff though!
  • 12 1
@JeffWeed: I have to say, I'm loving your vids more and more.
Effortless style, shredding and a killer attitude. Props to you my man

  • 8 4
@SlodownU: you guys should put up a wall or something
  • 23 2
@jaydawg69: Totally agree with that sentiment. Americans shouldn't get upset when folks from other countries point out the glaring cognitive disconnects within our culture. It should merely serve to give us all a bit of pause and perhaps re-think things a bit instead of feeling threatened whenever someone points out that we have some glaring societal problems.
  • 3 0
BC sure, but not here in Ontario. It's the worst lawyer'd up baby hand holding going. Lack of elevation and people with no common sense or ability on a bike because of straight dirt roadie mentality!
  • 7 0
@inverted180: i wrote something about the weirdness of Ontario. I'll get it published
  • 13 1
While others need heavy metal and mega adrenaline rushes to ride features like this, Jeff is content to listen to some smooth jazz and nonchalantly cruze down without a care in the world.
  • 11 1
Hahaha thanks Jefe! I do rock a lot of metal, but will use it in a vid if it makes sense, but these tunes fit the vibe better IMO.
  • 2 0
@JeffWeed: I would like for you to make a video where metal fits the vibe then!
  • 1 0
@LaXcarp: Hahaha thanks for the feedback Carp!
  • 9 0
Great video. Thanks to all the builders from the past and all current builders for creating and maintaining such a great riding area. The FVMBA will continue to advocate for trails, liaise with the land managers, and support trail builders. I am the Woodlot rep so if anyone has any questions or concerns feel free to message me.

Thanks for your work Ryan, it was great meeting you!!!

Wow if thats not a case of a gopro making jumps look small I don't know what is. Heckle is no joke.
  • 5 0
Hahaha to be honest, they aren't exactly massive like the FEST jumps, but they definitely aren't tiny either! Some of the stills make them look small. Crazy how much is lost through a lens!
  • 7 0
Shhh... Jeff... don't let the Fraser valley get popular. There isn't any good riding out there hear.
  • 5 0
Oh man... I think the fame of Squamish and Whistler will keep ya'll in good shape!
  • 1 0
@JeffWeed: So, now that you've made contact with FVMBA, get out to Vedder once it dries out a bit (in a few weeks). I want to see that vid.
  • 1 0
@rrolly: Would love to ride Vedder!!!
  • 1 0
@JeffWeed: You need to make contact with Harv over at Life Cycles in Abbotsford. He's got a great riding group where he or one of the group could take you out pretty much any time to Sumas/Vedder. You'll love it.
  • 4 0
Super nice vid! Smooth and stylish riding and incredible soundtrack. It is very inspirational and a reminder of riding is not only about being fast but having fun. That's something missing in most videos these days. Very good job

I have to say, I LOVE these videos. Everything about them. Just an upbeat, but fun and chill atmosphere while at the same time just killing it as far as riding goes. Great stuff. Keep it up!

That RipMo is seriously tempting me to the big wheels. JKW makes it look so nimble and playful. Just cruisin' with a hydration pack and an XC lid. No way I would ride in there without a full-face. Awww, who am I kidding, no way I would ride in there period. Great stuff!
  • 2 0
Thanks man! The Ripmo is a pretty compact bike, it's real easy to throw around, and the long travel helps when things get rowdy!
  • 3 0
yeah @b-roc you're famous now, and you didn't even need to take your clothes off.

 that hub is loud
  • 3 1
Glorious sound of a well maintained i9 hub. Beautiful.
  • 7 0
Yea, its an Industry 9 hub, though in real life it is nowhere near as loud as it seems in this vid!
  • 2 0
 @adriemel83: Correcto!
  • 2 0
@JeffWeed: my pre-torch gen i9 has a slight different tone, and a tweaked pawl spring... not quite the same zzzzzzzzzzzz... more of a zzzzzZzzzzzzZzzzzzzZ. Just need to get a chance to fix-r up. Just blew through a few of your other videos, super smooth. Keep it up!
  • 4 0
@adriemel83: Thanks Adriemel, I've been nothing but stoked with my I9 Torch hubs. Shoot those guys a ring, perhaps they'll be able to locate replacement springs for you?

With all the head related injuries on the front page of pinkbike, i would have expected at least a full face when doing those gnarly jumps and drops. Good video and fun riding though. Downvote away!!!

I rode Woodlot once, it's a ton of fun! The road climbs are fairly steep but there are a lot of unique trails in there.

Sounds like the old climb was brutal. The way up wasn't too bad by today's standards, so I wouldn't let rumor of a big climb steer anyone away!

What is this, variety in the tastes of mountain bikers?! Blasphemy! Hahaha! I drink coffee a couple times a week, but almost every day have a couple cups of Earl Grey. Keeps the energy manageable. Yum!
  • 1 0
@JeffWeed: Pro tip - drink Earl Grey - is that white or black?

- asking for a mate.
  • 2 0
@Waldon83: Hahaha! It's a black tea with a little cream added. Yum!
