The Dunbar Summer Series brought their traveling circus to Big White Bike Park this past weekend to help welcome BC’s newest bike park to the BC Cup series. For their first summer open for lift access biking, Big White did not disappoint, providing racers with one the hardest downhill tracks of the summer, starting off with a ten-foot vertical drop right out of the gate.
The weekend kicked-off on Friday with the course marked and some unofficial practice laps for those that could get the day off work. Friday night found the bulk of the racers arriving and the campground filling up as racers began to setup their race pits for two days of downhill racing. As at all Dunbar Summer Series events registration opened at 9:00am sharp on Saturday, with 150 racers picking up their plates and heading out for a full day of practice, followed by seeding runs. Chris Kovarik got a flat on the top section of the course leaving the door open for Yoann Barelli to take the win. Claire Buchar would race last on race day with her win while Josh Dziwenka and Piper Allman posted the fastest times in the Jr. Expert categories.
We built the pits around the finish line and for Saturday night Big White provided a long jump with a 28-inch takeoff. Twenty guys and one gal sent it to flat for their chance at glory and prizes provided by Atlas Brace and Troy Lee Designs. Stephanie Denroche won with a jump of twenty feet, while Rhys Ellis and Dunbar’s own Trevor Thew battled for top spot in the men's category. On his last attempt, Rhys sent it thirty-eight feet one-inch to flat to take the win as the pits went crazy. What a beast!
The riders meeting saw emcee Josh Visser give out a ton of swag as racers, told jokes, sang songs, and won challenges to take home the goods donated from all of our sponsors. Eric Hartley had to make a quick exit from the washroom as he was called up to battle Garret Macintosh in the tube changing challenge. The brand new Easton wheelset went to Garret as he quickly left the confused Hartley behind. Eric took home a brand new Lzyne pump from at least getting the tube out of the box before Garret won. Race day
saw John Walker and Piper Allman win Jr. Expert, Claire Buchar won Elite women with a time of four minutes and Chris Kovarik won Elite Men’s with a time of three minutes twenty-seven seconds.
Huge congratulations to Travis Rosener and Cassia Karen
. After starting to date a year ago at the Fernie BC Cup Finals, Travis surprised Cassia with a ring and asked her to marry him during the awards. (She said yes!) The Big White staff and the entire BC Cup DH community wish you two the best of luck!
