First Ride: The 2020 Specialized Enduro is Bigger & Burlier Than Ever

Aug 13, 2019
by Mike Kazimer

The Specialized Enduro is entering its second decade in existence, a time period that's seen it morph from an overgrown XC bike into the gravity-oriented, big wheeled trail smasher that it is today. The 2020 model has received a complete overhaul, and now bears more than a passing resemblance to the current Demo downhill bike.

Speed was the overall focus behind this project, and for that reason the Enduro is only available with 29” wheels, in a total of four sizes. There's also no aluminum version in the lineup, at least for now - according to Specialized, that's because they "wanted to create the lightest, most bad-assed bike in this genre." There might not be an alloy version, but going with carbon does mean all frames get a gummy bear compartment in the form of Specialized's SWAT box down tube storage system.
Specialized Enduro Details

• Wheel size: 29"
• Travel: 170mm front and rear
• Carbon frame
• 63.9° or 64.3° head angle
• 442mm chainstays
• Threaded bottom bracket
• SWAT box
• Sizes: S2, S3, S4, S5
• Weight (Expert Elite, S4): 32.7 lb / 14.8 kg
• Price: $4,510 - $9,750 USD
• S-Works frame only: $3,310 USD
www.specialized.com

There are four complete bikes available, beginning with the $4,510 Enduro Comp 29, and going all the way up to $9,750 S-Works version. The S-Works frame uses carbon rocker links rather than the alloy links found on the other models, which saves 250 grams. That frame alone retails for $3,310 USD.

Frame Details & Suspension Design

The overall look of the Enduro remained relatively unchanged for the last three years, and going even further back, that X-Wing frame design first showed up on the 2010 Enduro. That's all in the past, and the new Enduro now has a completely different suspension layout. It's basically a slightly shorter travel, carbon fiber version of the Demo 29 downhill bike, with the added benefit of room for a water bottle and snack storage.

Specialized's chainstay protector works very well at keeping any unwanted noise at bay.

The Enduro still uses a Horst link design, with the chainstay pivot located below the rear axle, but Specialized moved the shock lower in the frame and shifted the main pivot location to accomplish several design goals. Those goals included improving the bikes momentum carry (the way that it carries speed through rough sections of trail), increasing the amount of anti-squat, and increasing the amount of progression. Those three goals could have potentially been accomplished using the prior frame design, but the bike would have had a higher standover and center of gravity than Specialized's designers wanted.

The Enduro's anti-squat value has increased by 40%, a step that was taken to improve the bike's pedaling efficiency. It may be a long travel beast of a bike, but it's still meant to be pedaled when there aren't any chairlifts or shuttle trucks nearby.

As illustrated by the chart above, the leverage curve is more progressive, and no longer flattens out at the end of the travel. This is a welcome change, and should mean that air shocks won't need to be completely filled with volume spacers in order to prevent the bike from bottoming out on bigger hits. There aren't any coil shock equipped models in the lineup - a Fox Float X2 or a RockShox Super Deluxe take care of the rear suspension duties - but the more progressive leverage curve makes running a coil a viable option.

Along with the changes to the Enduro's kinematics, the bike's rear-end stiffness was increased by a claimed 12% compared to the previous version. The front triangle stiffness remains the same - there wasn't any need to make that section any stiffer.

Geometry

The new Demo may have a limited size range, but that's not the case with the new Enduro. Specialized have gone with the same 'S' sizing system used on the Stumpjumper EVO – the idea is that riders can choose their bike based on the reach rather than seat tube length. Short seat tube heights proved plenty of room for longer travel dropper posts. The reach measurements range from 437mm on an S2 all the way up to 511mm for the S5. I've been spending time on the S4 version (I'm 5'11"), which has a reach of 487mm.

The chainstay length has grown a bit for increased stability at speed, and they now measure 442mm. The effective seat angle is a fairly typical 76 degrees.

The Enduro's geometry can be altered by rotating two chips that sit in the shock eyelet. In the low setting, the head angle measures a slack, 63.9-degrees, and in the higher position it increases to a still-slack 64.3 degrees.

The Enduro's long wheelbase and slack head angle are noticeable when climbing - you're not going to mistake this for a snappy little trail bike, but it does pedal very well, and not just for a bike with 170mm of travel. The shock remains relatively uninfluenced by pedaling input, while remaining responsive to the terrain the bike is rolling over. Specialized's full suspension trail and enduro bikes have traditionally seemed to prioritize traction over efficiency, but this new design manages to simultaneously feel very efficient without giving up traction - it's an impressive feat.

I've been spending time on the S4, which has a 487mm reach, but I could see going with a S3 for a little more maneuverability. The seated climbing position was relatively comfortable, partially due to the upright position that the stem and high-rise handlebar create, although I did end up sliding the seat all the way forward on the rails – I think the actual seat tube angle could get even steeper without any negative repercussions.

specialized enduro 2020

The previous generation of the Enduro didn't really fall into the fast and furious category. It had plenty of travel, but there was something about its handling that made it more of a plush all-rounder rather than something designed for pure, unadulterated speed. The 2020 Enduro changes all of that – it now fits easily into the mini-DH category, and even then the word 'mini' is an understatement.

I don't usually hoot or holler when I'm riding, preferring to keep my emotions buried deep inside, but more than once I actually laughed out loud while riding the Enduro. It's almost ridiculous how much it'll smooth out the trail, and how fast that trait will let you go. Fans of bikes that deliver a magic carpet type ride will find a lot to like here. The low center of gravity is very noticeable, especially when cornering – having the weight centered close to the bottom bracket makes it easy to really push into a tight turn without losing any traction.

specialized enduro 2020
Matt Hunter taking the high line out of the dust.

Downsides? Well, this is a bike that truly requires a steady diet of wild trails to keep it happy. It's a much more gravity-oriented machine than its predecessor, something that's closer to a downhill bike than an extra-long travel trail bike. Just like it wouldn't make sense to buy a St. Bernard to keep you company in a tiny studio apartment in a big city, the new Enduro isn't going to be the right choice if your typical trails are on the mellower side of the spectrum.

I'll be putting more miles in on the new Enduro over the coming months in order to further figure out its strengths and weaknesses. It's also going to be put to the test against some of the other top contenders in this category; look for the results of that battle to come out later this year.

  • 2 2
@bizutch: You and I have been to two different Northstars. The type of rider you described as one of those platty nutjobs was the most common type of rider at N* circa 2003-2010. Karpiels (from Reno, but a N* mainstay) and Gazzis were common and so were sketchy booze runs and safety meetings in the middle of the resort.

I haven't been there in a while because MTB has gotten significantly more expensive since then, but I'd imagine that what you're seeing there now is a result of the bro-homogenization that's happening everywhere as MTB becomes more mainstream.

That being said, I'm sure someone just as salty as I will think that I'm a bro-biker the second they set eyes on me on my first-trip-back-to-northstar trip later this year. It's all a matter of perspective.
  • 3 2
@happycatbasket: To clarify, I was generalizing about Northstar. Never been. I only know @kidwoo went there so... Big Grin
  • 2 1
@happycatbasket: US Platty nuttjobs have a saying. If you can hit everything at Splatt you can ride anywhere on earth. Too many stories to tell but have ridden with Gwin, Hill, basically almost all but the new pros there. It was a hidden hem that companies tested prototypes at and between Windham and MT St Ann WC pros would be there ripping with us. One guy on a Karpiel from Cali came thru once and really impressed us. I mean first time out hitting some mega tech 25 foot stuff only a handful would consider.

On a more serious note, people have been over-shocking the stumpy evo 29er to give it 155mm-ish of travel, which also increases how progressive the end stroke is. I'd love to see a shootout between an evo modified like this, but with both bikes sporting a 170mm front end.
  • 42 0
@solarplex: did you just hear that woosh?
  • 49 0
@solarplex: I think the wooosh might in fact be woooshing over your head....
  • 5 1
@hamncheez: having tested the Evo extensively, and gauging by the shape, kinematics and travel of the enduro, they are going to ride entirely differently, especially for larger dudes.

The evo is a great trail bike with some ability to get after it in gnarly terrain. The Enduro appears to be a DH bike that has been pared down for enduro/megagnartrail use.
  • 7 0
Another question- will this and the new slayer mean that the EWS racers will stop using over-forked trail bikes and start using the bikes that were actually made for enduro? I always wondered why they were on stumpys and other trail bikes for riding trails that I would want a full DH on. It just makes more sense to me, since your riding stages almost blind, to ride a bike that gives you much more forgiveness for poor line choice, so long as you can pedal up the transfer stages. The Rocky Mountain team were on bikes with only 140mm of travel, for heavens sake!
  • 19 0
@solarplex: is this some next level irony I’m not aware of?
  • 3 0
@hamncheez: Enduro isn't freeride, that's the thing. Even Rocky Mountain isn't classifying the new Slayer as an "enduro" bike- that is the Altitude. I doubt we will see many of the top EWS racers on bikes over 160mm. But this Enduro might be changing that if pedals as well as the first looks say it does.

@hamncheez: it seems to me enduro racers value other qualities in bikes like efficiency, predictability, maneuverability...btw rocky team were riding the altitude with custom stroke length to get more travel but maybe they iiked the lightness, i dunno...if you think about it races mostly won by handling corners faster and not straight lining the gnar the faster...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrnoU0j-jzA
  • 8 0
@hamncheez: That depends on whether we're seeing all the ways EWS races are actually won. I don't think that we are. The media will always shoot the gnar sections because nobody cares to see pics of flat corners... but exit speed is how you keep your times down. Riding a Yuge travel bike is a good insurance policy against crashes but certainly costs you time elsewhere. Up until this stupid antibiotic-doping 'scandal', Maes was smashing everyone on a 150mm fork...
  • 1 1
@cuban-b: but how is it on an all-day epic?
  • 1 0
@jlf1200: point taken. I guess thats why I asked; since we don't get the same coverage as DH (not really possible) I'm pretty ignorant on what a full days racing is like in the EWS.

@hamncheez: I have had the last year's model enduro and a stumpy evo which I run a 170mm 36 and longer stroke ohlins ttx.

Frame looks nice (as long as the seatpost doesn't need to extend) and i suppose it rides great.

But the specs are f*ing ridiculous, no other way to put it. S-Works model with Reverb ASX but XTR shifting? What were the product managers smoking and where can i get some?

Man, first Pisgah is turning into a bike park with trail dozers gutting all "eroded" singletrack and making it "more sustainable" by making gaps & berms & giant ditches to "catch the runoff from the giant berms & jumps"...and now the manufacturers are like " here's your tractor for riding all that straightline stuff". It's like someone told them the machines were gutting all the tight tech stuff & they made plow bikes ready to purchase the instant the trails got juiced.

I miss going for a ride, coming to stop to apologize to hiker, asking them about how far they've come, then trying to clip back in and get my bike rolling on some precarious roots and rocks.

  • 8 4
@ka-brap: That kind of thinking is befitting a teenage boy, but not a professional product manager. For instance, Reverb ASX is a great addon to the ASX drivetrain but a colossal waste of money on its own. S-works is specced like the aftermarket bike of a rich kid with no sense of value who buys random stuff because he heard it’s cool.

The frame and suspension linkage are probably neither cheap nor easy to manufacture. Guess they had to pinch a few pennies here and there. I'm just curious if that nest of pivot points will withstand the test of time.

If you use offset bushings and/or an angleset, I think the YT capra 29 compares favorably with this bike. Their top build is $5500, a tad more than the Enduro Elite Carbon at $5400. I know E*thirteen has had their issues in the past, but recent reviews have found their QC has improved dramatically. The YT is spec'ed so much stronger than the comparable Enduro that I don't see how you can justify the price difference (other than the Enduro will probably be in stock when you want to buy it). My personal opinion is that its spec'ed stronger than the Enduro Expert Carbon build as well thats $1000 more.

Rare to see such a neat lineup on an oem bike. Really dig the frame, to bad i just got a HTLT this year.
  • 2 1
@Ttimer: I think your comment shows how completely out of touch you are with the market and how many paying customers want a wireless dropper post no matter what brand their drivetrain happens to be. S-Works bikes have always been and always will be about having the best components. This bike is no different and Specialized will completely sell out of this S-Works model, which only proves my point.

@ka-brap: No. Do you really believe that customers would buy the current S-works over an S-Works specced with full AXS? Talk about being out of touch. And if people wanted a wireless dropper so desperately you would have seen lots of Magura Vyrons in the wild over the last couple of years. But you don't.
That line about the best components is straight up marketing talk without substance. I don't see Trickstuff brakes on there, i don't see parts by Chris-King, Syntace, Enve or other high-end components. Its just tons of house-brand stuff, which might even be good, but nowhere near "best".
  • 5 1
@Ttimer: Yes. Going with a full AXS drivetrain is more of a market risk than mechanical XTR. I'm not saying it's inferior but just that people have reservations about it and that represents a legitimate sales risk. The new XTR is for sure hotter than XX1 Eagle and Specialized's PMs are totally right for specc'ing it. Additionally, many people who generally don't like wireless/electronics on their bikes are actually ok with it on a dropper post. It gets rid of a cable/hose that traditionally hasn't been on a bike anyway and doesn't seem as "risky" as committing to a wireless/electronic drivetrain. No one was ever excited about the Magura Vyron frankly because it didn't work well, every review is keen to point that out. To put that post in the same category as the Reverb AXS is about as careless as you claiming that Syntace makes super high end aftermarket components or that Enve's wheels are the best or that XTR brakes could not be considered "best". We all have preferences for certain high end brands over others and we could yell about it all day but the fact remains that this S-Works bike is loaded and it's awesome that it pisses you off this much.

They put the money where it counts like carbon rims and Code RSC brakes. The 36 performance is not a "low-end" part. Still has the GRIP2 damper - I have one and it feels amazing. X-fusion dropper is another ABSOLUTE STANDOUT. Read Levy's review. I have one and it's been going for 14mos no issues at all. Also GX Eagle doesn't scream bling, but it's very close in weight to the XO Eagle and will be cheaper to replace down the road. I think they nailed it on the Expert model, and I believe they'll sell more of those than any other model. Plus that paint job...

@hamncheez: until specialized goes direct to customer, their prices will be higher. People love to hate Spesh but they could easily go the YT/Intense route and undercut them in the process. Maybe they will. I know a lot of shops hate them too but at least they’re still choosing to be IN the shops.
  • 4 1
@jeremiahwas: The prices aren't just higher. They are high. Period. And the issue here is that year on year the prices are getting higher for no apparent reason.
  • 1 0
@Primoz: Well, if you ask the manufacturers, they will blame it on the Trump Tariffs. IDk how much truth there is in that though.
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: Probably not much, because the price hikes started well before the tariffs. Part of the problem is that this industry is rife with collusion, plagued by huge market power from a few component makers and consumers that are very susceptible to the hype machine or overcome by brand loyalty.
  • 1 0
@sunringlerider: I can't say too much, but I had the opportunity to walk the areas that were of major concern with someone of tremendous knowledge who knew exactly what could be done to address the issues and they were simple & straightforward solutions, most of which didn't involve machines. I've not gone down it yet, but I will. Irony is I've always hated Avery because it's hard to get to without a day to commit and is over in a blink with a big climb out to gravel in all directions.

  • 1 0
@BenPea: the article mentions some of those experiencing lung issues were vaping THC products. It doesn't mention oil cartridges specifically, but I can't imagine they were vaping dry flower and had those issues. Cheap vape companies use cheap chemicals in their processes, oil cartridges included. I'll refrain from going off on a tangent about the usual suspect chemical and impurities that cheap vapes can include. Not all that glitters is gold.

This is a stupid thing to think about but I absolutely loved the X-Wing frame design and thought that the last 2 generations of enduros were some of the best looking bikes on the market. Sad to see that go.
  • 16 3
@bridgermurray Looks are so subjective. I've personally always disliked the look of the X Wing design. This is the first non Demo Specialized bike that I've ever wanted
  • 8 1
@pdxkid: I agree, this is the first Spesh in years that has caught my eye other then the Demo. But aesthetics are only a small part of the equation...curious to read how it rides and holds up to all the abuse a bike like this will get in the upcoming reviews.
  • 8 2
same with the slayer- last generation absolutely beautiful and new one meh.
  • 5 1
@pdxkid: I'd agree with that. In fact it's the first Specialized bike, of an kind, that I've ever wanted
  • 4 2
I agree. I have the first-gen X-wing 2010 Enduro, and it only got sleeker and cooler looking over the years. After years of the Enduro having such a stand-out and unique look, this design is a bit of a let-down, at least aesthetically.

I’ve been a bit disappointed in the last few Specialized releases — the Stumpjumper was just kind of OK. The look was ripped off from Orbea, and a few people told me it basically rode like an Enduro from 5-6 years ago (not that that’s bad, but not exactly cutting edge if you already had this bike in another iteration).. The New Demo looks like it stepped backward in its evolution — it looks like a bike from 2008-09. Now this. None of it is exactly bad, just not too exciting in my opinion.

But looks are subjective. They probably kick ass on the trail, though. I know it’s not cool to like Specialized around here, but they do generally make damn good bikes.
  • 4 0
Agreed. My 2018 enduro has just become a collectors item.
  • 1 0
Yes and they rode great at the time. This one rides next level if you are talking about racing and going big. I like the looks of the old one, but this thing is far more capable.

The movie that YT made was bizarre and... pretentious. Spec video is just bizarre.
  • 1 0
I think the whole thing is a riff on the Hannibal TV series, there's more than a little of Hugh Dancy's Will Graham in there. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUvn0KXh3Z0 . My main disappointment was the lack of a massive black stag.

  • 8 0
@ldhbaker: Thanks, i know that. I'm calling it out because I hate it.
  • 12 0
@nouseforaname: They had a comment about this in the slayer article. They make an agreement with the manufacturer that they won't spill any of the details that they get from manufacturer, but anything that is seen in public is fair game to report on. They have a bunch of staff, so one guy can be segregated to work on the "first ride" article so that it can drop the same day as the bike release, while other staff are free to pursue/report public sightings.

I'm not sure what about that bothers you guys? It seems like pretty standard industry practice. Would you prefer they didn't report public sightings? Or that they broke their agreement with manufacturers so that you can get news earlier? The first one would just amount to them covering up details for manufacturers, the latter would just piss off every bike company that they work with.
  • 2 1
@nouseforaname: oh no they purposefully dropped any spy shot, in fact hacked someone elses account o leak it themselves, just pre juice some marketing hype on forums.
  • 3 1
@ldhbaker: That is false. The shots posted on PB had to do with timing of the EWS event. If the event were later, let's say next week, those shots would never have been posted prior to the launch.

  • 5 0
Yeah it does look good but I'm not too sure about the shortish seatpost lengths combined with a slack actual seat tube angle. You can see from Mike's comment that he had to move the seat forward all the way. I think he might have a similar issue if he went with the smaller frame size too. With the top 2 sizes you will still need to get your weight forward to weight the front tyre as the long front centre is very long. It is good to see some longer chainstays though but still not long enough on the top two sizes in my opinion.
  • 3 6
@WAKIdesigns: On 95% of trails, if you timed yourself, this bike with a fox 49 lowered to 180mm or the stock demo you would have the same times. Sorry, but the Kona Magic link was the last 200mm travel bike that was made to be pedal-able.

Also, why 157mm? I still think we should go back to 142mm; the original Enduro 29 had 142mm spacing with short chainstays, great tire clearance, and even room to run a front derailleur!! Boost is a scam.
  • 1 0
@MTBgeometryguru: all they need to do is add adjustable chain stays, its not hard, bikes managed to do it 10yrs ago
  • 2 2
@hamncheez : because Demo has 83mm BB shell hence to get the good chainline for the big cogs you need 157. Since normally you don’t need more than 6-7 gears on DH bike 142-148 works.

really happy with my '18 enduro. this one seems like a different beast- i like having a bike that can plough through anything on the north shore but feels great to just hop on and ride some more XC kind of stuff. looks like this one is more of a pure enduro/ mini DH bike whereas the stumpjumper has now stepped up to fill in where the previous gen enduro was.

Yea exactly. 17-19 enduro could handle anything, from blue XC lap to double black bike park. This new one should have been called something else. Its a pure EWS race bike. With those wheelbase numbers Incant see it being that playful
  • 5 0
Same here. As a guy riding an XL size, I really wonder how nice it is to ride these on an actual trail that isn't super straight. Tight corners are already tight enough without adding another 3in of freaking wheelbase to deal with. I'm already on 29in minions and slacked out...how much more stability do we need at the expense of manueverability? Maybe I'm wrong...?
  • 3 0
@Svinyard: Glad other people are feeling this too. The pendulum of trendiness is still swinging quickly in the direction of length and stability and away from agility and maneuverability. Hopefully we won't go too overboard before some balance sets in. It's fine for a bike like this, because smashing rough terrain at high speed is its purpose, but when our trail bikes start looking like this, I'd say it's a step too far. (Of course, you usually get downvoted like hell for suggesting this...)

Just think about how many fewer trails will be fun and interesting to ride on this bike compared to its predecessor. Hopefully the pendulum will start to swing back before we get to 1500 wheelbase...
  • 1 0
 @Climbtech:

64.5 and 170mm ? Sounds a lot like the Scott Ransom I bought. Always been a Specialized fan, too bad this wasn't an option six months ago.

Very interesting how far forward they placed that main pivot - that's got to improve the kinematics a lot. I'll have to go back and look at some newer bikes but that seems fairly innovative (Most main pivots are right above or slightly behind the crank centerline).

@Mondbiker: actually the best AM chainline is achieved with Boost rear end and non boost chainring offset. Quite a few folks I know buy non-boost chainrings for their sram cranksets. That is because the most commonly used cogs are from the middle and up. And the bigger the rear cog gets the bigger issue it becomes. I run 47mm chainline with 142 end on 10-42. 83mm moves the optimal chainline 5mm in wrong direction. Maybe if someone made some mad offset chainrings that would still fit the frame, it could be less of an issue.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: You can size down and the G1 can be set with 443mm CS. The Commencal DH bike doesn't have the seat angle for climbing.
  • 1 0
@SintraFreeride: off course it does. The effective STa is good. But then it weights as much as a 2001 Kona Stinky.
  • 4 0
It's seems like there is pricing jump on all the new bike announcements lately. Even 5k doesn't get you a full GX build. Although it is nice to see good suspension and brakes across the builds.
  • 2 1
The mix and match aspect can be nice if done properly... NX Cranks and chain, GX mech and cassette, X01 shifter.
  • 4 2
I have heard from a few people in the bike industry that the new Tariffs are why we are seeing steep price increases now.
  • 2 1
@jpcars10s: I'd take a better chain. I chewed through two GX chains in a season on my full GX kit on the previous bike, i'm on an XX1 chain now on X01 cassette and GX crank (and sprocket) and it's holding up better i'd say. The surface protection on X01 and XX1 chains is better than on GX, seems to help a lot. Plus i've heard about REALLY good lifetimes on the first (X01) chains from XC racers still running 1x11 gearing (just an eagle chain upgrade), that i didn't see on my previous bike as i mentioned.
  • 1 0
@Primoz: Good to know on the 12s chain, as I still love my X1 11s, but go through a chain every 4-500 miles. I put an Eagle ring on it and it's without a doubt the best chainring availible right now. New bike is all GX with NX cranks, so I'm looking forward to seeing how lasts.
  • 5 1
Came here to post "this looks like a.." to get attention - then I started my tiny little brain, realised it's something totally different and my post would be total bullsh*t, so I didn't do it.

- no pinkbike user in 2019.
  • 6 0
Pink bike and provocative shock placement looks like Ned Beatty on the receiving end of it in Deliverance.
  • 7 1
The bike will quickly develop bottom bracket squeal
  • 1 0
 hahahahaha
  • 4 1
Kudos to Spec for putting out a killer new design. A lot to like there. I agree that the SA could be steeper and that comes from owning a SB150 which I even think could be steeper. I applaud the CS length, in the 440's is right for these bikes, 430's is too short for the bigger sizes IMO. Pricing is good for the frame only but the build kits leave something to be desired; SWorks is weird with the Shimano/Sram mix; DPX2 on the expert vs. X2 is a bummer.

Is it the expert or the elite that is 32.7lbs?

@mikekazimer how does it pedal compared to an enduro sled that is acknowledged as good climbing, say a SB150?
  • 4 1
I'm confident this a great bike for a few rippers with bike park frequency. However, for the most of us, the Stumpy Evo is still the go to weapon of choice. Id throw a leg over the new Enduro, but also look forward to putting the hurt on folks that bought too much bike. I'll be on my Stumpy Evo chomping gummy bears.
  • 6 0
Listen to this, Specialized: 6,550$ should be enough to buy a very well spec'd bike!! Not mid-market stuff!!
  • 5 0
'There's room for a water bottle, and in-frame storage for snacks and other supplies.' Other supplies...
  • 2 0
Lovin the look of this beast, absolutely gotta touch of SC going on there, but hey, bikes will be bikes. I rode an 06 Enduro for near on 7 years, while it was a hell of a bike in it's era, it sure did take some muscle to get it anywhere - but that's a story from the distant past. Test rode several of the more recent x-wing models, but I just never quite gel'd with them. Rolling a Capra 29er for the 18 months or so, and it's everything I want it to be, but some of these new LT whips got me giving side eye glances while she ain't looking...
  • 5 1
It’s like Spesh and SC are competing to see who can sell the most bikes that are the worst value for our money...NX on 5k+ bikes.
  • 3 0
The pricing is mental. Just checked and in New Zealand the S-works is going to be $16,500! You could buy a 150 bike and a full downhill bike for the same price! My current Enduro is a 2017 S works and that was $6,500 less.
  • 10 4
Another plastic 29er, like there isn't enough of them already.
  • 2 0
The Leverage Ratio around Sag is very close to 3:1, a bit higher than the old model. That means heavy riders are going to have problems pumping the shocks close to their limit it they go for air or finding the right spring, if they go for coil.
  • 2 0
"The low center of gravity is very noticeable, especially when cornering – having the weight centered lose to the bottom bracket makes it easy to really push into a tight turn without losing any traction."

How much of a difference is there to the center of gravity of the bike, and the overall package by swapping the shock with the water-bottle?
  • 2 0
Added bonus with the older bike you could load the stash box up with things just infront of the bb. In a real world situation I think the old bike would have a better cg.
  • 5 0
The Expert Carbon and the Frame only colourways make me tingle.
  • 2 0
So funny to see the return of the interrupted seat tube to the Enduro... what's old is new LOL... but nice to see it located lower in the frame than the old days, lots of room for a long dropper it looks like.
  • 2 1
Excited to see numbers finally released, but I think I'll stay on my SJ EVO. Same head angle (in the SJ's "high" setting), with lower BB, more overall-riding friendly travel numbers while still being bike park worthy, etc. I'd really like to the see the SJ get that leverage ratio/progression, however. My one complaint with the EVO is it's tendency to get through the rear travel relatively quickly.
  • 3 1
Come on, you can´t have it all at once, at least not with Specialized, maybe next year.
  • 1 0
I agree with you that the new Enduro looks sick on paper. I look forward to trying one out. I also have a Stumpjumper Evo and it's nearly perfect for PNW riding. I really wish it had a more progressive leverage curve so I could run a coil decently. I currently have a DVO Topaz jammed full of volume spacers to keep from bottoming all the time.
  • 1 0
Agreed. Leverage rate perfection. Doubt that will happen with the Stumpy unless they separate the linkage from the seat stays. Then things start getting heavy.
  • 3 0
Absolute beast! A little too much bike for my needs, but I get it. Now can we focus on getting this sizing treatment on the Stumpy Evo for the masses?
  • 5 1
I used to believe that "too much bike" was a thing, but its not. I ride a Pole Machine in central Texas, and it works great when pointed up, down, or straight. Unless you really care about minimizing weight for those strava times, or you want a bike you can dirt jump with, the slackness or amount of travel doesn't really matter.
  • 2 1
First off...shocks are getting longer so they half to either be vertical (Transition and Scott) or through the seat tube (Santa Cruz). Everone who says "looks like a ....." needs to consider this. All bikes are going to take on a very similar design because of this.

Now..the reach deal. Longer reach bikes do ogibe you more stability than the shorter traditional bikes but they are not necessarily "centered". This where wheelbase comes into play. Specialized is making different bikes wth differnet styles. Sizing a bike based off WHEELBASE makes a lot of sense as the rider can be more centered without going short chainstays or long reaches.
  • 2 1
I wasn’t considering a new bike until I saw the ‘spy’ shots over the weekend which got me thinking. I love how my 2018 Enduro rides and if this move things on again it’s very tempting.

However, I will not be buying one. I’ve just found another crack in my 2018 frame which itself is a crash replacement after a rock strike on the last frame. Both frames had Rockguardz fitted from new and both have cracked on the bottom of the down tube. This new one looks just as vulnerable.

Disappointing, but having only ever bought Specialized for 22 years it’s time to look for something else...
  • 1 0
My bike has a carbon thing there to protect the frame. But an important detail,it has a gap (little Velcro) to move and deform when is it by a rock. It works flawless
  • 1 1
Happens to every bike in rocky area's. I have a Trek Fuel that broke twice from rock strikes to bb area.
  • 1 0
When they charge 5k for a bike and put the cheapest droper post available I no longer want to buy it. When are we consumer going to vote with our wallets and drive down the bike prices. Even giant is creeping up to nine k for the reign
  • 1 0
So, I'm very tempted to get one, I live in Malaysia so its also a lack of options, Its ether this now or wait three months for a Bronson or pay way over ticket and get a YT, which does have much better kit.

Problem I have is i'm 5'6 and like smaller bikes, i'm worried that the 29er will be just to big and feel like a semi truck. Any one on here a short ass like me own a 29?
  • 6 1
Down country sessions are gonna be ALL TIME on this bad boiiiiii.
  • 5 0
 "Travel: 170mm"

So front and rear....170mm..?
  • 4 0
Correct. I'll add a couple words in there to make that more clear.
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: Cheers thanks for the info!
  • 4 0
I can't believe that pedal well. But no one care going uphill these days. I have always to do... And I love it.
  • 7 2
Bring out a 27.5 Aluminium version and it will fly out the shops!
  • 7 2
Yay more 29er bs that I don't fit on.
  • 4 0
Is it me or is the STA actual really slack for some odd reason. Asking for the tall guys
  • 3 1
It's not the steepest - if I remember correctly, it was around 68 degrees, similar to what you'll find on Santa Cruz's new bikes. That will put your weight further back over the rear wheel and result in a longer top tube compared to a bike like the Yeti SB150, which has an actual seat tube angle around 71-degrees.
  • 6 1
29er only, well fluck that wagon wheel shite. No thanks, I like turning.
  • 1 0
I work for a @specialized dealer but for some reason they do not sell frame sets to Canadians , very unfortunate . Owning the last 2 gens of the sworks enduro I really wanted this one but have only bought frames my entire life .
  • 1 0
Can someone please help me out on this? I have a 2018 S Works Enduro. Came with 2.8 tires front and back, but 27.5. With this new one, it has 2.5 front and 2.3 rear?? 2.5 front maybe not so bad, but 2.3 rear? I just had the same on a Kona Process I demo'd. Can't understand why they are going to smaller tires at all, let alone 2.3? What am I missing here?
  • 1 0
Baby this is your song, and sure, it ain't that long, but I'm tryin'. Can't you see, its so easy for me, to keep typin'. It's all in your eyes, that goddamn look of surprise, when I'm wafflin'. My sandwich is ready, stay safe and keep steady, whilst I'm eatin'.
  • 1 0
Not bad. Anticipated long needed step-up from previous model that has become stretched to the limits of its form. Last year I swapped my sworks 29 for the Pivot firebird 29. Will have to see in person how the new Enduro rides but after reading and watching available first reviews, Firebird is a keeper. Kudos to Spec for the step forward.
  • 1 1
So Santa Cruz is winning the race ,but still don’t like the looks in both, but hey speaking on winning that commencal bike is fast ,and this one and the Santa’s looks like that brand but along time ago ,so maybe MAX really knows how to.
  • 2 0
Whst is going on ffs... Canyon, Orbea and now Specialized offering only 29???? gues my nex bike will be Nuke mega top model for the same price as spec comp...
  • 7 2
 Endurnomad

Newsflash: 2020 Mondraker Summon ridden & reviewed out tomorrow...
  • 2 1
Don't like the polished saddle head on the AXS post. Looks like a prototype part, and nothing else on the bike is shiny. #fail, this wouldn't happen with a Santa Cruz or Transition.
  • 1 1
Say what you want Spec wll not read a single word and more 1 day no one will
And thats it 29" carbon etc .
The manufactors says WE made bikes to we earn a lot of money not for your ride pleasure your bunch of mosquitoes ahaha
Bring us the money we take care of him
  • 3 1
Not that SC was the first to run the shock through the seat tube but dang, Spec. Stole he mainframe design from SC. Looks like a nomad with a different rear end bolted to it.
  • 4 0
Another nail in the coffin for DH bikes.
  • 2 2
This is just like walking by a domestic car factory or dealer. All the employees drive Japanese cars.
Specialized employees all ride SC bikes probably?
Specialized was fed up and now the employees will take advantage and can get an employee deal on bikes the company they work for...
  • 2 0
Makes you wonder if the new alu Demo is just a kind of stop gap untill the new Enduro does a season and transplant that knowledge over to the Demo and make it carbon.
  • 3 0
The 2014 29er S-Works that was also reviewed on pinkbike was $9,250. Inflation corrected, this version got cheaper.
  • 2 0
What’s up with two cables going to the left chainstay? Does the shift cable get routed back towards the right? Seems like unnecessary bends.
  • 2 0
It's gotta kind of suck for people that bought the previous version of this model, since hasn't it been refreshed like almost every year for the past couple of years?
  • 7 5
Ok. It is beautiful, we are not going to say it is not. But common... Santa Cruz won this battle.
  • 3 0
Will the swat box contain the burrito juices?
  • 2 0
Did nobody tell Specialized they're supposed to have conservative geo numbers?!
  • 3 0
Hell yea, now I can get an’18 dirt cheap to replace my dirt cheap ‘16
  • 3 2
So the Specialized Enduro and the Rocky mountain Slayer are both miraculously spotted on the Trails 2-3 days before a Ride review is released...
  • 3 0
If a Santa Cruz Nomad and Knolly Delirium had a bastard love child...

10999 euros for a bike?? jesusssss
i would buy 2 top end YT Capras and still have 400 euros left!
  • 1 0
If they are ever in stock
  • 3 3
Especially for a bike that is a straicht copy of the Megatower. And the Megatower's CHEAPER!!!!
  • 2 0
Why is specced with a 2.3 tire? My Stumpy Evo came with 2.6 front and back.
  • 1 0
I’d say to make it a bit more agile.
  • 2 3
I am glad that I bought my Bronson at the start of the season and wasn't waiting for the New Enduro reveal, when I was looking for the replacement for my old 2014 Expert EVO.
1. It looks like the Bronson, but worse
2. My 2014 Enduro looks better
3. It is 29" only, seriously....

The red frame looks sick tho...
  • 2 0
Can I put it in the higher setting and run a 27.5 rear wheel? Just asking of us short arsed enduro riders...
  • 1 0
First specialized since I was a kid that I really want to own.. don't like the parts combos though.. at least you can go frame only.
  • 1 0
I for sure wouldn't feel "bad ass" with my snapped carbon rims and/or frame, some hours walk from the car park.
I'll pass on this hype train.
  • 8 4
 Looks like a Nomad.

i want to see a video of Matt Hunter riding this again. Like redo the video link below only with the new enduro!

  • 3 0
X fusions seat posts? 30.9? Is the WU dream dead?
  • 6 3
No 27.5?? Well that’s one less choice for us short people!
  • 2 0
Interesting how the Slayer and the Enduro have similar #'s but seem to ride completely different
  • 1 0
Wow Drool That looks amazing!!! At first glance it looks like a Megatower but then you realize it doesn’t have a link coming down from the top tube
  • 1 0
still seems there is not much room to put a seatpost deep in the frame. i saw some flappy words but no actual measurement; get it together pinkbike
  • 2 0
This could just as easily have been named Bighit or SX Trail. Or combine the two and call it a Big SX.
  • 2 0
Specialized: "our bicycles run exclusively suspension from Oh............Oh f*ck!; oh shit!; NEVERMIND!"
  • 3 0
I have always wanted an ugly pink 29 er.
  • 2 0
Carefully staged "spy shots". So now we know : spy shot"=product release in the next week
  • 1 0
Crap will get on the shock over the top of the cove link bit, if it's shitty weather. But if you're rich enough to buy one of these that's probably not a problem.
  • 1 0
All the people saying that it looks like the Megatower or another SC,have you already seen the Banshee Legend? ????,Much older then the Santa Cruz design
  • 6 4
#27.5 aint dead?! Oh wait a sec, its soon to be
  • 2 0
Looks like a Santa Cruz Bronson and Canyon Sender
  • 2 0
 New Specialized bar? Roval?
  • 8 6
MTB for 10k without the motor is a pure scam...
  • 4 5
I would not call it a scam, considering carbon road bikes have been up there in cost for ages. MTB just gotten hugely more popular as a sport in the recent decade. I say let people spend their hard earned money. In the end, they are not any faster, and all it does is just inject more money into the market, which is a good thing.
  • 4 2
Anyone who pays full retail for a bike is a fool. I own a 10k bike but I paid half price for it on sale.
  • 2 1
@phops: get money out of mountain biking!
  • 5 0
@ThunderChunk: Yeah. All those fools with enough money to buy what they want when they want. Losers.
  • 2 2
@getsomesy: mountain biking doesn't existing without it
  • 3 2
He is right 10k for a MTB is BS. Push bike cannot cost the same as a good dirtbike. MTB industry is a f*cking cancerous rip off!
I love mountain biking, but bike companies should get a hold of themselves....
  • 2 0
@epidem: I don't get it. If the bike (SWorks is $16,500 here in New Zealand, a Suzuki Swift is $22,000 for comparison). You walk into the dealer and say, I'll give you $15k for it, they say no. Do you wait six months? A year, 18 months when the new model isn't far off to get a discount?
If they don't budge on the retail price then you have a choice between paying it or not.
As for motorbike comparisons I'm tired of them. Yes you could buy a 2019 CRF450 for less, but you can also buy a cheaper Enduro version for half the price of the moto.
  • 2 0
@Idiotech: I'm not rich but I make decent money. I could afford to pay full price for my bike but I just can't justify the cost knowing prices drop at the end of the year. My custom built gambler cost me $3700. New it would be worth around 7 to 8k. My wife's Norco range was purchased for $2k, reg price wasa$3700. If people don't mind spending full price that's cool, but I just can't do it. I actually don't know anyone that's willing to pay full retail.
  • 1 0
@ThunderChunk: I live in Asia where choice is very limited and wait times are reticulated. because we have to order most bikes there is pretty much no chance of a deal anywhere.
  • 2 0
The new and improved demo 7! Been waiting for this
  • 5 3
Not everybody wants wagon wheels #freerideforever
  • 2 0

  • 1 0
Rear shock is a 205x60 Float X2 Maybe room to change to a 62.5mm if the linkage doesn't top out
  • 2 2
The suspension linkage of full sus bikes nowadays looks like the suspensions on F1 cars. Horst link system is very much obsolete.
  • 1 0
the old endure sucked for heavier people and this one looks to be worse with that leverage ratio right?
  • 8 6
 Just slayed the Slayer release!
  • 4 5
 I do't agree....
  • 8 1
Slayer looks dated already on day1
  • 6 3
 Looks like a NOmad
  • 1 0
Damn these new enduros are looking too good. Just need a Evo version with a 180 fox 40 for full mini-dh status
  • 1 0
if you just put a fox 49 on there I'm sure it will be full DH status.

What would they do differently to make an "EVO" version? Even slacker HTA? a longer fork will do that.
  • 2 0
 @hamncheez:
Good point. I guess all it would need is the 49
  • 3 0
@brycepiwek: I guess they could do an "EVO" build, thats alloy, comes with a double crown, coil rear, and DD tires.
  • 6 4
Pinkbike/Mike, was or is there any news on 27.5” versions?
  • 2 0
love it, Nomad too! Fuck Enduro, bring back mini DH!

So the non drive side chainstay has two internally routed cables... double brake lines?

 That's ENDURO as F**K... Smile
  • 2 0

 Yay, 14 bearings.
  • 1 0
Is that S-Works frame raw carbon, or is there some kind of patterned paint on it?

  • 1 0
 Radberry
  • 1 1
I really like Santa Cruz. Can't wait to get this bike!
  • 1 3
seriously, first they straight take the Orbea Rallon with the Stumpjumper than they make an identical Santa Cruz Megatower (minus the VPP). NOT COOL!!!
  • 1 0
i'm pretty sure the reason for that is: 1 stiffness in the one sided bit on the stumpjumper
2 for the enduro the shock is positioned as low in the frame as possible, it doesn’t even look like a santa cruz either
  • 1 1
It looks like a turkey dinner, that isn't going to pedal well afterwards.
  • 1 2
Is it me or do a number of manufacturers 2020 bikes look like a Santa Cruz...

 Soooo many new bikes....
