Money talks, they won’t admit it but they were 100% told to let fans in or they weren’t getting the semis + finals

Go look at Tokyo if you want more f*cked up, just declared a state of emergency but they olympics are still going ahead

Totally agree mate, why should it make any difference what sport it is, I’m getting really f*cked off with it 2! They couldn’t do fort William but as you say let 70,000 idiot football fans to watch a match!

Honestly get a grip mountain biking is a small sport where it’s hard to get anybody to do anything as there’s no chance of them making money for themselves.

@maglor: It's a sad song isn't it? I mean it implies "We invented the game and we're showing the rest how it's played", and yet every time it's sung in the hope of a major tournament win, that boast of invention turns on us.
It's the British Leyland of football anthems.

@deco1: we’ll said budy. Some of the hatred on here is bizarre, is it any better than what’s been directed at the young England players. I thought mountain bikers were above that, I was wrong.

@dingus: how old are you, about 12? 2 completely different sports. Get a grip and stop looking for verification with childish insults.

As an English ex-pat living in Oz I was blown away by the euro cup crowds without masks, like no virus exists, we still have to wear masks and have limited gatherings indoors and out with only a handful of cases. To see hardline no be allowed a few spectators just further shows what a bs political and money driven farce this whole covid situation is
  • 5 0
@ctd07: There used to be a name for English Expats living in Oz...Convicts. And collectively we have allowed ourselves to return to that.

This is going to be awesome! so happy to see mountain biking events back on.

Really gutted that Gee is out of action and I wish the welsh Gov would f*cking do one and let fans come watch! Its cool for 90,000 football fan pack a stadium or 12,000 posh t*ats to go to horse races but its not ok for 1,000 DH fans be spread out along a track outside!

Ahh well - hopefully redbull will have plenty of cameras to pick up all the action!

 Bloody devolution

I hope Kaos takes revenge on the course, and finishes with flair and without pain. Awesome that Jono is going at it again. I bet Matt is going there to make some nice vlogs about it.
  • 3 0
I love watching him ride. He does the best whips I've ever seen.
  • 2 0
Matt has a great MTB last name, I read it as Huck 'n Haul - braaaap!
  • 3 0
@pourquois-pas: I think there's some name confusion going on... Matt Jones is maybe making VLogs alongside his brother's participation.

But yeah, the other Matt has the better surname.
  • 10 1
On the no fans thing - Yeah it's a pain and the comparison to football is fair. It's ridiculous. But we have to remember that Hardline is in Wales and rules between the devolved administrations are different. I think Wales (and other DAs) have been much more cautious than Westminster.

Tricky one - Obviously there are politics at play in football and I'm sure there are things going on behind the scenes that we'll never know about. Shame. 70k in one place I'm sure cases are going to go up - Sucks!

Complete opposite for Hardline - I think that's very unfair, given it's more outdoors than a stadium. Numbers are obviously much much lower still than football/rugby events and even festivals!

Anyway, polite rant over. It'll be on TV and hopefully we can look forward to going to Fort Bill next year!
  • 17 9
Where are the women at?! With the dust settling from Red Bull Formation, one would've expected to maybe see a women's lineup at Hardline. Not trying to start a huge debate here, but there are strong women riders out there, I'm sure they'd want a crack at this event.
  • 31 8
Uh, you’re sure? From what I’ve observed over the years, women don’t love the gnarly tracks, and hardline is a bit more gnarly than your typical WC. Rachel is sketched out by hardline and she is 1000x the rider any of those FR women are.
  • 11 2
It's interesting to see you get downvoted for this, as it's glaringly obvious that women aren't willing to ride the course. I'm sure many are able and I guarantee that any proven female rider who expressed interest would be encouraged to ride. Granted... Statistically, women take fewer risks than men and this event is about as risky as it gets.
  • 3 0
 @pnwpedal: Statistically... Razz eheh
  • 3 2
@nvranka: Agreed on all front... my point exactly though as this event is the child of the Athertons, I would've expected something for the women. I know it's meant to be the gnarliest course possible, but it could be cool to see something to widen the field of who's competing. Just striking up a conversation here, did not mean to create a debate. Cheers.
  • 1 0
 @guillaumecommencal: cheers homie
  • 3 2
@guillaumecommencal: haha it's absolutely down to each individual, but everything I've seen for behavioral science is that women tend to be more risk averse than men. For better or worse.
  • 3 2
@pnwpedal: "I guarantee that any proven female rider who expressed interest would be encouraged to ride"
- Its always interesting when men who are not involved in putting on events respond like this. Like how do you know? There are countless events women have been asking to be apart of for years and they are denied. Dont assume if you dont know how these things get organized.
  • 3 1
I imagine Dan does not want to be responsible for any girls crashing. smart.
  • 1 1
@DDoc: WTF does that mean? Dollars to donuts you cant ride for sh**
  • 2 0
@pnwpedal: I think there were only 2 women to hit the road gap in Les Gets finals run, right? I could be wrong about that. I would love to see women compete at Hardline.

Hhuummm I wonder, I feel like going hiking in the Welsh countryside sometime, July 24,25 sounds perfect..

The very top of the course appears to be on Open Access land, so you have the right to roam. Most of the rest is private forest or private farmland without any rights of way, apart from the waterfalls which are a little pocket of Open Access.
  • 19 2
Bernard Kerr? I'm surprised he's not on the list yet too
  • 23 1
I'm assuming it'll be later, or he declined, because there is zero chance he didn't get an invite.
  • 9 1
@lister11: I hope he will be „added“ in the next days.
Can‘t imagine a hardline without him
  • 3 1
My first thought too. Perhaps he's concentrating on the World Cup this year and doesn't want to risk it?
  • 3 1
I'm almost sure I saw him mention in one of the LSDs that he'd be back in the UK and Sam Gale would be with him. He's bound to be doing it!
  • 1 1
@ardee: he's on the list of riders in Wave Two listed in the article, so I would assume he is? Unless I'm drastically mis-reading something...
  • 2 0
@yonibois: obviously he’s been added now, but your comment made me think - I wonder if he’d actually consider hardline a risk to his season? A rider like BK, similar to Kade seems fairly fearless - they won’t be thinking like us mere mortals
  • 1 0
