The 5 Most Popular Demo Bikes at Bootleg Canyon - Interbike 2017

Sep 20, 2017
by Richard Cunningham
Outdoor Demo was one third its expected size, so it was easy to discern which brands were most prevalent on Bootleg Canyon's trail network. There is no tree cover on this landscape, so a simple scan of the mountain will do. Match the colors of the moving dots with the brands in the pits and boom, I had my tally. (e-bikes don't count because they aren't mountain bikes.) The results were not surprising, Every winner was a capable trail bike, and 29ers were split pretty equally with 27.5-inch-wheel models. But, I'm not going to lie. In the end, I looked for long lines that led to empty tents and then asked which model was most popular. So, here they are, in no particular order:

Marin Wolf Ridge

Zerode Zerode Taniwha

Can we have the Ebike one then as here in the EU where they are everywhere and people aren't so angered as there isn't any trail access issues we are interested in them. My next bike will be one as not able to trail ride anymore.
  • 42 8
@bat-fastard: they are not allowed on any trails here, and there is potential that they might harm access if people ignore that.

@atrokz: thats your problem not an ebike one. I have my dh bike for uplift days and looking for an ebike for trail riding now. You can even hire them at our trails to try for the day.
  • 56 5
@bat-fastard: And the fact that there isn't an e-bike article is your problem.
  • 24 2
@bat-fastard: There are plenty of websites for ebikes, eg: electricbikereview.com

@atrokz: The dirty little secret is that most of the people who are anti-e-bike are the ones riding illegal trails when no one's looking. You can't see them riding those trails, but you can see an e-bike, so it's much easier target.

I'd say about 99.9999943% of the hypocrites slamming e-bikes are riding illegal Santa Cruz trails right now, yet they carp on about access rights. Pfffft. Cry me a river.
  • 42 7
@wibblywobbly: RC is a legend. He was here before e-bikes and he will be here after e-bikes. When he says something- you should take note. His experience elevates the Pinkbike collective, and boy do they need it.
  • 16 10
@bat-fastard: You should lobby for a PinkEbike.com really. Ebikes are mopeds with redundant pedals...
  • 28 27
@atrokz: The f*ck you talking about? They are completely legal on all provincial & federal trail systems so long as they don't have a thumb throttle. Private trails are another thing though...

 @singletrackslayer: Agree 100%.
  • 23 2
@singletrackslayer: the reason people ride illegal trails is because of access reasons and areas either shutting down the good trails or making a 5 foot wide decomposed granite walkway and calling it an all access trail and patting themselves on a back for a job well done (looking at you SDMBA). Ebikes will make it even easier for the city to shut down what little trails we have left that are legal to ride.
  • 45 8
Everyone talk as much s#@t about ebikes at every possible moment. Let's make them the equivalent of sexual predators. Riding 70 a week right now on a repaired quad tendon that probably needs more repair work and I wouldn't be caught dead on an ebike. Sack up or go golfing.
  • 16 4
@ajax-ripper: not legal on all trail systems. Some like Gatineau prohibit all electric bikes from using the trails. There are also some public trail networks that also prohibit their use. I wish it was across the board for all trails, but as it stands it's up to each governing body. as it stands, most do NOT allow it as per TCMP: "Most municipalities in the GTHA permit ebikes within on-road cycling facilities, but not typically on off-road multi-use trails."

as an aside and just an etiquette question for all: When you're climbing and a faster rider comes up behind you, we know we are all supposed to move over. Fair is fair. But what if an E-Bike is coming up behind you on a climb? Do you get out of the way, losing more of your 'human' energy, or do you just block it and keep going, because you're the one putting in the effort. Serious question, hasn't happened yet but I think I'd be inclined to just keep going and not ruin my effort when that person can easily restart.

@singletrackslayer: Correction: riding illegal Marin trails. But that's the point. As we're trying to make trails legal, e-bikes just muddy the argument. I don't think anybody really cares how someone else gets to the top of the hill. However, if e-bikes get the NIMBYs even more frothy, then yeah, there's gonna be some ire.

@bat-fastard: Rob..in NI e-bikes are "classified as motor vehicles in the eyes of the law and those behind the handlebars must have the proper credentials before hitting the road.

They also need to wear a motorbike helmet, protective clothing like leathers and pass both a theory and practical test".

@belfastbiker: thats legacy from original older e-bikes, they just grouped the new pedal assist bikes into their existing policies, they are currently in talks to change this and be sensible and bring it inline with UK laws regarding EPAC bikes .i.e not classed as motorbikes, just new and needs updating thats all but they will get there soon
  • 3 1
Or did he disqualify them because otherwise it would be a list of five e-bikes?
  • 13 5
@bat-fastard: Honestly, mate, it's not worth it. The amount of hypocrisy, ignorance and prejudice on here blows my mind. You could apply the same argument to hikers vs mtbers, everyone in the skatepark vs scooters (or bladers back in the day). Either way it's a prejudice because it challenges change. History repeats itself in all forms. It just exposes first world problems when something as pathetic as this causes so much outrage - so at least we're in a good situation that this is the 'worst thing ever'. Large parts of the world are waking up to destruction, man-made or natural, and they have to carry on their lives... but an ebike!

Just ride your bike, whatever bike, and let the internet meltdown.
  • 5 1
E bikes will never look like a Session

so E = Epic Fail..
  • 3 0
@dubod22: so based on that theory. Should we have e- surfboards too!

Yeah the only first world problem is apethhic dickheads trying to reinvent the wheel and calling it something else when it's BS and only about a dollar, yeah rape the Trails and down the track you will be the first one screaming when u have no access!
  • 2 0
@Maverickdh00: You haven't seen the eSession then? It looks like a pregnant Session!I like the idea of an eSurfboard - That would save peoples arms a ton of ache. Have you patented that idea yet?

Where I live I haven't seen any ebikes as the law doesnt allow them anywhere. Also a lot of the good trails are restricted to walking only, so I won't be screaming if I don't have access because... I don't have access anyway!

People get along. It's the only way.

@choppertank3e: Haha, I don't care about ebikes so I don't know the good websites. That was just the first result on ye olde google.
  • 3 1
@dubod22: All of your attempts at comparisons are inapplicable because none of them have a motor, except for an ebike. Ebikes are great for commuting and riding motorized vehicle trails. Not bicycle trails. Where is live, it is allowed to ride hiking trails unless otherwise posted. It has been this way for years. This won't last long when unskilled and unfit riders are aboard heavier machines with more speed than skills. Think skidding and immediate trail damage with hikers taking pictures of said damage. Use you brain. It will happen everywhere not just here.

If ever something was posted just to get a post up on the site then this is it.

No words from the people about how popular they were? No words from anyone riding the bikes to see what people thought of them? Not even any cursory info about the bikes.

Just a few photos.
  • 184 0
Do you really need to have "words from anyone riding" them?

I can help you there:

"the *insert demo bike here* climbs like a goat and descends like a demon. The fact that it's longer, lower and slacker than last years model allows it to steamroll obstacles while still being playful and flickable in the turns. It's suspension is plusher at the top of the stroke vs last years model while still having great mid-stroke support and virtually no bob while pedaling. It's new axle standards accommodate it's new wheel size which is a major improvement over last year's wheel size."

It would be nice if the industry could come up with better terminology. It's all the same and makes it impossible to get an honest feel for what one bike can do vs another. And with really not much for demo days considering all the brands...
  • 1 0
@TheRaven: so you think the gearbox bike is identical to all the others? I'm really dying to try one, and if I were at a demo featuring one, but didn't get to try one, I'd ask around to get a sense of what people liked or hated about it.
  • 1 0
@Poulsbojohnny: most of the time, the bike can do more than the rider
  • 21 0
Not suprised about the marin or zerode. If I had the chance I would love to try a gearbox bike and an entirely new suspension design.
  • 8 0
Not surprised about them either. Keep in mind a popular demo bike might be a failure in the market. Which bikes would I like to demo most? Well ones that I would never consider buying and are unique.
  • 1 0
I really hope we'll be seeing the reviews too then. Otherwise these testers aren't doing their job properly Wink . I'm on the fence about whether or not I want Pinion on my next frame. I'm hearing mixed stories. Some love them (typically Zerode owners), others claim to experience excessive drag or at least a less direct transmission. Low maintenance and durability are high on my list (and I'd never want a derailleur cage as long as we see on modern bikes) but of course it has to work too.
  • 2 0
@vinay: I am in Zerode country (NZ) so we should be patriotic about these bikes, but I have heard riders selling bikes after a couple of weeks because they can't stand the drag.
  • 1 0
@StackingItSince1991: Thanks, food for thought. I really thought Pinion with a belt drive is the way to go if I want to invest in doing minimal maintenance maximum riding. Unfortunately Effigear is currently only sold on their own Cavalerie bikes (though they do sell to frame builders). I recall reviewer Paul Aston was excited but did mention the slightly lower efficiency too. That said, I wonder how efficient my own derailleur drivetrain is. I always use thick wet lube for the chain and prefer to rather use too much grease in the (Shimano) hubs than too little. Noticed the octalink bottom bracket felt pretty coarse when I took the cranks off (worn too) so I'll see if it I actually notice it when I install a fresh new bb (Truvativ Howitzer this time). So in that respect maybe Pinion drag is comparable to what I'm used to Wink . That said, I wasn't expecting it but I'm considering Rohloff again too. They claim their efficiency is on par with (clean, lubed) derailleur drivetrains and from what I've heard, it really is good. It may be an odd placement of weight but maybe it doesn't matter too much on a hardtail.

Those riders bothered with the drag of the Zerode bike, do you know whether they were running belt drive or a regular chain? I heard belt drive was slightly less efficient, the bike in the article here seems to run a regular chain.
  • 1 0
@vinay: Pretty sure they were the chain version. But to be fair a lot of the Taniwha's here were bought by the Rotorua crowd (where the Zerode was designed) - but most of those riders are freaks. They ride so often and are so fast their friendly rides are faster than most peoples race pace!! So they notice even the smallest inefficiency that the average rider wouldn't.
  • 2 0
I suspect much of the "drag" is imagined or weight/suspension induced. I have trouble keep up with cross-country guys on the flat and windy because I don't accelerate out of the corners as fast. Keeping up on the uphill is no problem because of the wide gear range and the active suspension helps the rear float over the technical stuff. Downhill is way faster on the Zerode. It does take a wee while for the gearbox to settle in, mine is super smooth now.
  • 1 0
@I haven't had any experience with this bike but I can tell you that any belt drive I have ridden has a weird feel engagement wise. I can imagine people mistaking that feeling for extra drag. I can't believe a rubber belt could be anywhere near as stiff as a steel chain.
  • 1 0
Thanks all for the feedback! So can I summarize that the belt is probably less direct than a chain and the efficiency of the gearbox is marginally lower than for a regular drivetrain but not by much?

@StackingItSince1991: I can imagine. I love the area around Rotorua, Taupo etc and I can imagine those who ride there regularly are going to build some skills and speed Smile .

@andydd: As a Marin dealer myself, I think what really holds back the look of the Wolf Ridge is the two-tone fading paint scheme they chose. In Pinkbike's first review of the Wolf Ridge, the test mule was all blacked out and looked pretty badass. When I get one for myself I'm going to do some type of vinyl over the fading colored parts.

@onemind123: I dont think you understood my post..the bike world is full of thousands to choose from, Ive just chosen a new bike (TR500) coz it fitted what I wanted (ability to switch between 180/200mm), but IF at first look the bike looked a mess, I dont mean just ugly, but the Wolf Ridge doesnt LOOK like it rides well, as I pointed out in my first post..Id simply write it off (perhaps wrongly perhaps not) and simply move onto the next.

I spend plenty of time riding thanks, in fact even though Im a Brit Ive spent plenty of time at Boulder City and the various trails there and even went as far as a ride to Hoover Dam.

It just looks like the Homer car, maybe great but looks so wrong.
