Formula Announces New CURA X Brake

CURA X has everything you want to achieve in performance and lightweight at the same time. While the Cura X comes with the same high level of performance as the Cura it has been enhanced with new technologies. With all the tests carried out, together with all the new technologies that could be acquired to meet the needs of all types of riders, from the weekend rider to the world champion rider.

In this new half-collar design, the most prevalent feature visible to the naked eye of this version, is a carbon lever where you can make toolless adjustments without leaving behind the magnificent titanium screws and braided Kevlar hoses that bring the powerful performance of the oil that runs from the lever to the caliper, to achieve maximum grip from the aluminum plate pads. Like the original Cura, the Cura X uses mineral oil, and can either be mounted to the bar alone or with a Shimano or SRAM shifter.

A special manufacturing process made it possible to create titanium hardware on M/C and caliper as well as a lightweight M/C clamp. All these new technologies offer an unmatched global quality.

 My read on that was not Engrish but Deutschlish. Try reading this monster of a run-on sentence with an over the top German accent that replaces "this/the/that" with "zis/ze/zat" and you'll see what I mean.

 They've been selling the Cura X for more than a year, but they have carbon levers/titanium hardware and are pretty pricy compared to the normal ones, This seems to be a new Cura with aluminium lever and tool free reach, but it has the same name, just to keep you guessing.

 Yes and no. That was a pre-release Cura-X that didn't have all the same upgrades as the final Cura-X becoming available now with the official release of the Cura-X. This is the first Cura brake that ACTUALLY has a tool free adjust. The other models look like they have a tool free reach adjust but they don't.

 Formula Cura brakes are the best I’ve ridden in over twenty years of riding. Loads of power, modulation, lever feel and price are all outstanding AND they run on mineral oil.

 @TheOriginalTwoTone: Also Sram brakes. I don't understand the trend of tool free reach adjust : you set it once, if the brake works well no need to be changing it every two minutes. Same for bite point. That's why I love the Cura : set it and forget it. Shimano XT are ok, but the constant need for a bleed get annoying.

Cura aren't perfect, my main complaint would be : no banjo fitting at the caliper (because of the quick connect) which make some awkward brake line routing on some frames.

 The 2's are incredibly powerful and hard to tell they are not a 4 piston brake. The only thing I've noticed is on steep prolonged descents (like over 10 minutes) without rest-points, they do start to fade and chirp versus the 4's. As soon as you give them a brief off-the-brakes section, they rebound quickly. I think this could easily be resolved by bumping up rotor size to 203. Honestly, the power versus the Cura 4 is pretty similar, but with the 4 you gain consistent lever feel and more modulation due to the added power.

 @Tambo: no, the diameter of the brake line is no bigger than a normal brake line so will fit through any standard brake line hole. Only thing that was missed is that the Speedlock is an optional ugrade.

 Is this press release not new? I thought these were on the Formula site when I was looking a week or 2 ago. That said, I'd love a set of these with the 4 piston calipers for maximum bling. (Or 4 and 2, like Magura Trails)

 Yeah, these were just officially released... Just buy the Cura 4's they are great brakes. You can ugrade the CURA 4's with any of the CURA-X specific features like the kevlar lines for a slightly firmer bite point.

 I am confused. I'm pretty sure these were all the time available and are nothing new. I remember reading somewhere that they were working on a new/improved version of the 4-piston Cura calipers as well as levers, that were due to be announced earlier this year. Or maybe it was only my wishful thinking. Anyway, I have two sets of 2-piston Cura's and another two sets of 4-piston ones. By far the most reliable brakes I ever had. Fantastic power and modulation too. The only thing that annoys me is the lack of free-stroke adjustment on the Cura4. Their free stroke seem to be higher than on Cura2 and the bite point is a tad softer.  Yeah, this is just the offical release. The only thing new on these brakes is that they are the first CURA brakes that actually have a tool free reach adjustment. The mechanism looks the same, but the tool-free bit is inside. The tool-free reach adjustment can be upgraded on any cura that doesn't have this by upgrading the lever to the carbon one and the pushrod mechanism. There is a new lever in the pipeline for the CURA4's with more adjustment, but you can upgrade it to any existing CURAA brake. Other than that there was only a small update in the caliper just after the CURA4 was released that provided better andmore consistent roll back. If you want a slightly firmer bite point in the CURA4, you can always upgrade them to the kevlar brake lines from the cura-X.

 Really loved my 2 Pot Cura’s. best lever feel and power. But I always had trouble with noise. Dry, wet didn’t matter. Also tried 3 different pads and 2 types of formula rotors (newer and older style)
Anyone got any ideas?

 I also had noise issues with Formula monolith rotors and various pads. Last year I moved to Galfer rotors and pads and I had zero problems since then. Even in wet conditions they stay noise-free when you get them warm. The pads are not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for - silence and great performance.

 Same thing, had the first gen rotors (with round holes) and the new ones : both were really noisy with all brake pads. That's a minor inconvenience though for a brake that works well.

 The bleed thing makes sense, I have always wondered why manufacturers never use them for brakes. I wonder if you could buy the threaded fittings like them at the hardware store and replace your caliper bleed bolts with them?

 been using Formula Selva S fork for a year, and Cura 4 Cura 2 brake setup for over a year. I am pretty confident with them like the prformance of all Formula stuff. Also a big point is serviceability. I bought the cura 4 heavily used, piston rings started to fail, and let oil mist out, fucking up a brake pad, easy fix and cheap parts, I ordered the 4 rings, swapped them out and happy days! Still flawless since then. Sometimes tricky to equally set all 4 pistons to center, but after the initial setup they work as they should. The rear I tried not to bleed for nearly 7 months, and it worked perfectly. Hardly any bubbles were in the system. Defintitely need to be considered if you are after some reliable and powerful brakes. They forks are also top notch..

 Love my curas! Such a solid performing brake! I've ridden most brakes on the market, and the curas are perhaps the most balanced. Greay power for such a lightweight brake, super reliable, good modulation, quick bite. Great product!

 its not that easy you need a pick, to release the springs, and they are in a channel so they don't come lose on their own

 I've used it and it works well ... but they are an optional upgrade so they won't automatically come with these brakes.

 @amirh1: read up the 2018 Enduro-mtb.com brake review, 20 brakes compared .. the Cura2's pull up better than many of the 4-pot brakes... amongst the best 5 power wise in a field of predominantly 4 pots... worth a read.

 @Santacruz817: force-to-friction curve aka feel is hard to quantify. brakes that go 0-100 suck. as do brakes with limited surface area and pad mass to act as heatsinks. no thx.
