Gas Gas' Prototype Race eMTB - Sea Otter 2023

Gas Gas have a new eMTB on the way, a full-powered machine with 170mm of travel and 29” or mixed wheels. According to Gas Gas, the goal was to create a bike that can compete at the highest level, and to that end it'll be making its debut between the tape at the first EDR-E race in Finale Ligure in June.

The full details aren't being released at this time, but it's not hard to make some educated guesses about some of the unmarked parts on the bike. The red accents on the suspension suggests it could be from WP – the Austrian company's products are a common sight on Gas Gas' enduro and motocross offerings. If that's the case, it'll be interesting to see what features and technology the company brings to the mountain bike world, and how it compares to the established players.

The other unbranded portion of the bike is the motor. Considering that it's the Gas Gas / SRAM race team, I'd be willing to bet that SRAM is the motor manufacturer – we saw a prototype of the motor emerge last year.

A strip of electrical tape is covering what's undoubtedly a display of some sort on the top tube, but there was no secondary remote to be seen. It's possible that the un-used button on the dropper post lever can be assigned to switch modes on the motor – that solution would make a lot of sense, and it wouldn't clog up the cockpit.

SRAM's Transmission derailleur is wired to the bike's battery.

The SRAM Transmission derailleur runs off the bike's battery, reducing the number of things to remember to charge during a race weekend (there's still the battery in the AXS dropper post, at least on this bike).

An official launch date hasn't been set for the bike, but when it does become available it will be sold through both moto dealers and independent bike dealers, with no plans for online sales at the moment.

I was hoping to see an evolution of the Magura Boltron fork built by WP.
That thing looked nice, but was marketed at e-bikes and had very basic onternals.
Come on WP / MAGURA please keep working on the Boltron!
  • 1 1
All Magura forks have relatively simple internals, which is the appeal to me (easy to service). Obviously like any fork (or most bike components for that matter) marketed at e-bikes it could be ridden unassisted. But they were just fed up by the changing standards. The Boltron had the regular (or old school) 20x110 axle and the OEM customers actually liked the fork, but wanted boost. It just wasn't worth investing in these constant shifts and demand for their brakes because of the e-bikes was on the rise.

The relation between Magura and WP is a funny one actually. WP came with the Rond suspension forks. Most notable may have been the one used for winning a gold medal at the '96 Olympics. Magura had already been cooperating a lot with WP/Rond (like with their FIRM-tech hydraulic rim brake interface) but in 2003 they acquired the brand. Most of the 2004 set of suspension products were an evolution of Rond suspension. So with the Boltron I thought it had come full circle but I later learned that WP now is not the WP of yore.

@vinay: was dat niet Gerard Rond die die vork heeft ontwikkelt?
  • 1 0
@vhdh666: (As the website is English) yeah Gerard Rond developed the fork, but as part of WP suspension. If you look up pictures of Bart Brentjens racing the Atlanta Olympics, you see both Rond as well as WP mentioned on the fork.

When I hold my thumb over the downtube and bb it's actually a really nice looking frame

As noted over on Vital, those suspension parts are DVO just with a different compression dial on the shock. I'm curious as to the origin of that frame...

flag Balgaroth (Apr 22, 2023 at 22:38) (Below Threshold)
Which are Suntour suspension parts so WP , like DVO is yet anither rebanded spin off of Suntour.
  • 9 0
@Balgaroth: Umm no. DVO is manufactured at Suntour (like Ohlins is now manufactured by XFusion) but they are not rebranded parts. DVO has their own engineers and product. I heard Suntour actually uses the DVO tech to their benefit.
  • 8 0
@Balgaroth: DVO is definitely not rebranded Suntour
  • 1 2
@nastynate711: the chassis and some internal parts are. They are very much similar
  • 4 0
@freeridejerk888: a select few parts are. We work on both and about 90% of the parts don’t cross over including the uppers and lowers. It’s really only some seal kits that are that same
  • 2 5
@Lololmalol: maybe forks are actually (mostly) DVO products but shocks are 95% identical.
  • 3 3
@Lololmalol: really? The shocks are very similar. Both are basicly a rockshox monarch too
  • 3 0
@freeridejerk888: I guess you haven’t seen any of these 3 shocks in a while

That cable to the derailleur looks perfectly placed to get ripped out by a branch or first crash, think I’d stick to the battery pack and remember to charge it !

WP made a fork with magura a while back. I wonder if this will be another one off thing, or if they're actually gonna produce aftermarket suspension products for mountain bikes.
  • 4 2
Really disappointed that the fork is not inverted; this company is well known for inverted forks.
  • 3 0
so a real gas gas or a licensed gas gas like the ktm bikes?
  • 15 0
The parent company is Pierer Mobility, which owns KTM, Husqvarna Motorcycles, and Gas Gas. Pierer also has a bike division that does Husqvarna e-bikes, Gas Gas bicycles, and Felt bicycles.
  • 3 0
@mikekazimer: Does that mean that there is a white and red version of the e-bike, like there is an orange, white and red version of basically the same moto?

The husq is cool as its 1 of very few dual crown emtb---which makes mucho sense for emtb.

@jrocksdh: They are adjacent at the Sea Otter expo with Yamaha across the way. The moto companies have smelled the money in the coal-burner - I mean battery-bike space....
  • 1 0
HasHas and Huksy eMtb are indeed from the KTM group. KTM licenced their name for Mtb a long time ago to a third party and can't use it today which is an inconvenience for them no doubt. Raymond is KTM eMtb from KTM, meanwhile a completely unconnected company reaps the benefits of the massive brand image that KTM managed to build in the motoworld for the last 20 years, the irony ...
