Giant Factory Off-Road Team Partners with DVO Suspension for 2018 Race Season

PRESS RELEASE: Giant Factory Off-Road Team

Josh Carlson and Mckay Vezina will contend the complete Enduro World Series on their DVO-equipped Reign Advanced race bikes.

The Giant Factory Off-Road Team are proud to announce that we are partnering with DVO Suspension this year in a joint effort to optimize the performance of the team’s full-suspension downhill, enduro and XC race bikes. All of the team’s Maestro Suspension equipped bikes will feature shock technology created by the California based suspension company.

bigquotesThis marks a new phase for the team. DVO is bringing an entire suspension brand to support our team. That means we get unlimited access to their full scope of engineering, product development and attention to tuning, as well as race support.Joe Staub, Giant Factory Off-Road Team Manager

DVO and Giant engineers are working closely to develop rear shocks that are optimized for the Maestro platform.

With the start of the 2018 race season approaching, team riders have begun testing their new bikes and gear, including new suspension setups. After achieving initial suspension setups early in the year, a team camp scheduled for March will give the DH, enduro and XC riders an opportunity to work closely with DVO engineers to fine-tune their suspension systems ahead of key events.

bigquotesThe relationship we have this year with the Giant Factory Off-Road Team is special because we are really focused 100 percent with Giant and their off-road program. From XC to enduro to downhill, all we do is focus on the team—making the best suspension for the team guys and specifically for each bike model and segmentBryson Martin, DVO founder

Martin said DVO will be creating and tuning shock technologies for specific usages, and the unique demands of pro racing. “For enduro, we’ll have a rear shock and matching front fork. In downhill, where you’re pushing things to the extreme, we have some really cool, outside-the-box product planned for those guys.”

Returning to lead the downhill unit this year is seven-time Colombian downhill National Champion Marcelo Gutierrez. Competing at the top level in the World Cup and other elite DH events where bike performance is critical, and where results come down to fractions of a second, Gutierrez said he is looking forward to working with DVO.

Marcelo Gutierrez is a seven-time DH national champion in his home nation of Colombia. For 2018 he will again focus on major downhill races around the world including the UCI World Cup series.

bigquotesIt’s great knowing they are going to be really focused on us. They have the engineering experience, and we have the riding and racing experience. Together, we should be able to create some amazing bikes.Marcelo Gutierrez

The downhill unit of the squad consists of Gutierrez, Irish national champion Jacob Dickson and American Eliot Jackson. Those three will focus on World Cups and other major DH events on their Glory Advanced race bikes. The downhill squad is coming off a strong season that saw Gutierrez land two World Cup podiums and win the Garbanzo DH event at Crankworx Whistler for the fifth year in a row.

The enduro squad also sees the return of some familiar faces. Australian Josh Carlson and Canadian Mckay Vezina will again focus on the Enduro World Series events, competing on their Reign Advanced race bikes.

bigquotesThe product they’re providing us already, straight out of the box, is phenomenal. The amount of adjustment, the feeling, it’s something that I’ve always been searching for since I’d come to mountain bikes from motocross a few years ago. I’m really excited to see the final outcome and it gives me more confidence heading into 2018.Josh Carlson

Canadian Mckay Vezina currently resides in Southern California near DVO headquarters and says he looks forward to working closely with the company s suspension engineers.

Joining Giant’s two global enduro athletes is Rae Morrison of New Zealand, who will once again represent the Liv women’s brand, racing her Liv Hail Advanced bike at EWS and other major enduro events.

In addition to the global riders, the 2018 Giant Factory Off-Road Team also includes a group of North American regional athletes led by veteran XC racer Carl Decker. Those racers will focus on a variety of major enduro, XC and gravel racing events in North America aboard their Anthem, XtC and TCX race bikes.

Joining Decker on the regional squad are XC racers Stephan Davoust and Cole Paton, plus enduro racer and BMX Olympic medalist Mike Day. “Each racer is different,” Martin said. “What they want from the suspension and how it relates to the bikes varies. There’s a lot of stuff going on with the bike design. You’ve got the kinematics and wheelbase and then the individual aspect of the rider, how they ride, their position on the bike. So we’re going to be able to specifically dial in exactly the feel of the bike with regards to the suspension and make them go faster.”

Woah, that's pretty big news for DVO. I wonder if this means Giant might start spec'ing DVO on their higher end builds... One can hope they will.
  • + 185
One could say ... giant news
  • + 50
A Giant Reign with DVO suspension that'd be awesome
  • + 54
@leopaul: you sir are a meastro.
  • + 18
Bryson Martin needs to just buy the Marzocchi brand back from Fox and change DVO's name to Marzocchi; then maybe we can get some of this awesome suspension in reasonable color schemes.
  • + 22
Seems that Giant will be expanding their reign to some of the smaller kingdoms
  • + 18
Who knows? They may have found a diamond in the rough
  • + 19
@hamncheez: no and no. Marzocchi is failing on its own. Thats a sinking ship no one wants to touch. Every DVO product has several color options. I'm loving my Diamond in Root Beer color
  • + 6
@hamncheez: I think DVOs corporate identity and their graphics have improved. Not quite the prettiest designs yet, but a major step forward...
  • + 17
@hamncheez: marzocchi name is too tainted. Was very wise of the DVO guys to do their own thing.
  • + 40
 Yup, that’s happening!
  • + 2
Seems like DVO in first mount for Giant might be possible since it says they are developping a shock optimized for maestro
  • + 9
@leopaul: @mattrix2 ok guys let's reign in these puns before they get out of hand
  • + 4
@hamncheez: haha this is funny statement on so many levels.
  • + 64
Ill always have a soft spot in my heart for Marzocchi, built that company from my garage but DVO is where we are at now!
  • + 9
@DVOSuspension: Still miss my '05 888. The smoothest fork ever built.
  • + 2
@DVOSuspension: Hope to see your stuff OEM now.

Have had a ton of Marz stuff over the years! MonsterT, SuperT, 888(x2), DJ1, Z1, Z2, etc. On a 350CR now but I know that's not the same.
  • + 3
@hamncheez: hahahhaa. and these guys will have to trash all their old white/blue kits
  • + 5
@DVOSuspension: So if Bomber girls are finished... what about Jade and Diamond?
  • + 3
 @hamncheez: Green is good.
  • + 2
@hamncheez: Why? All that is left of Marzocchi is old stuff and a bad taste from last years before they went under. DVO has none of that baggage.
  • + 5
@ryane: Those guys literally are what Marzocchi was.

I agree that this looks like a strategy for DVO to capture some of the OEM market. However, I wonder if they should have partnered with a team that has riders who have at least been on the top step at WC or EWS, and are consistent podium threats. For me as an amateur racer, products that are proven winners factor into my buying decisions.
  • + 2
@brassinne: oh I know. I rode for them at the end of the Marzocchi days, and rode/worked for them the first couple years they started DVO. DVO is legit!
  • + 5
Just put a DVO Topaz on my Enduro... honestly feels like a coil. Bladder is better than IFP.
  • + 3
@ryane: I secretly call the emerald the DVO shiver. Which, it is.
  • + 1
Im guessing by year 2..they figure out how to knock a pound off the emerald
  • + 1
@leopaul: gonna be makin some jack son.
  • + 6
@DVOSuspension: no wonder the diamond felt so good, always compared it to the 66 ti rc3 I had years ago. DVO for the win. Best customer service in the business!

@jzPV: you’re being very kind... I would have just said their designs continue to be amateurish and cheap.
  • + 4
@blackthorne: you spelled LOUD and BADF*CKINGASS wrong..
  • + 9
Thanks for supporting us in the past with all those iconic Marzocchi forks! Hope to have you as DVO customer too!
  • + 3
@bishopsmike: different time and place but those were some good memories!
  • - 3
@DVOSuspension: Well I'm definitely looking for a fork for my new chromag rootdown. Has to 27.5+ compatable, boost,157mm travel and a 28.99mm steertube. Y'all have that?
  • + 3
The Reign is the first bike I've ever thought looked good with DVO's lime green haha.
  • + 3
@DVOSuspension: I used Mazz for like 15 yrs.. bought a 2nd hand Diamond 4 months ago... in the UK.. your team personally helped me set it up via email / PMs within a DAY!! and yes... it's the best fork I've ever had... the small bump compliance, progressivity and tracking... beats everything I've owned.. and I've owned near everything! Stoked for this year for you DVO!!
  • + 2
@leopaul: Regin it In brah, Regin it in!
  • + 79
Man rockshox is having it rough this week
  • + 18
A lot of riders are going to be happy....
  • + 46
Maybe they're actually preparing some hot press release about new stickers, or so...
  • + 66
Wait! They are preparing 33.99mm diameter legs.
  • + 33
 @IluvRIDING: Inverted tapered steerer.
  • + 22
@IluvRIDING: I'm holding out for the 36.99 Totems.
  • + 5
@VlajiciStrapec: or a new 'solution' to the torque caps issue
  • + 4
or the new 28.99 spoked Roam Wheels.
  • + 4
Rumour of note is that RS/SRAM were the culprits of the supply chain fiasco that caused the YT delays this season.
  • + 6
@map-guy: they tried to take them down. Trek paid them to threw the monkey wrench into the gears. Specialized will sue both companies. The process will weaken the global mtb economy. Canyon will merge with Cube and Haibike, creating the biggest brand in the world: “Fokker Fahrad”. Lapierre will give up their assets 2 weeks after.
  • + 0
 Needs more boost
  • + 38
there seems to be quite the shakeup across the bike industry for the two big S's (sram/shimano) lots of teams not running them this year. more options are good for consumers
  • + 5
unlike Giant Factory Off Road, who IS running shimano.
  • + 6
@POWsLAYER: i am talking more than just giant.
  • + 7
Shimano lost some points with me over the reliability of my Zee brakes. Sure they never completely fail but the inconsistent lever pull is maddening when you are trying to focus on the trail, not hoping your brake doesn't decide to change bite points between pulls ha ha.
  • + 1
@POWsLAYER: true. not sure why downvoted
  • + 2
@MrFogg: Ive got older xtr on one bike and newer xt on another and never had an issue with either, they bite hard and consistent all the time. I know some don't like how grabby they are but I prefer it, similar to the brembos on my motorcycle. Perhaps its because the zee are the budget options? When it comes to brakes and suspension I think its always something to spend the extra cash on as adjustability is key.
  • + 1
@VPS13: after extensive reading through forums the best explanation I found about the inconsistent bite points was that zees have little nooks and crannies that like to trap air in the calipers. I tried the recommended solution (extreme bleed, take the whole brake system off the bike and do a complete fluid swap, hold that brake line vertical and knock the caliper and house around to make sure every possible bubble is out of the line. I did that and zees have been working perfect ever since.

I also prefer the grab of Shimano. Being a heavier rider that extra bite is nice to have, don't need much pressure on lever.
  • + 20
Amazing news for DVO, very cool!
  • + 22
 Thank you! Super excited!
  • + 4
@DVOSuspension: Yeah, great to see DVO battling Fox, RockShox, Ohlins, et al. You guys & gals rock.

Question: A Diamond with a lower offset still on the way?
  • + 2
@kwapik: Agreed. If I was to do a frame up build, it would be DVO...
  • + 3
@spinko: Thanks and look forward to having you as a customer!
  • + 7
Reduced offset Diamond and Onyx SC will be coming soon!
  • + 0
@DVOSuspension: will DVO be OEM spec on 2019 GIANT range?
  • + 1
 @DVOSuspension: Thank you
  • + 1
@DVOSuspension: will the 27.5 versions have reduced offset too?
  • + 1
Love my topaz. Best change I made on my stumpy. Would love to drop some coin on the Diamond but just don’t have coin.
  • + 16
is this a new dvo topaz damper?
  • - 10
flag dhnewbie (Jan 19, 2018 at 10:09) (Below Threshold)
This is still the DVO Topaz T3 damper!
  • + 5
@dhnewbie: you sure about that? It clearly says Topaz2 if you zoom in.
  • + 3
Looks like a Topaz 2...wonder if they’ve changed the damper to a twin tube style like the Fox DPX2
  • + 31
It’s a brand new Topaz we’re currently working on. It still has the T3 compression but we’re working on some new mods. @krisrayner:
  • + 2
Is there any new Topaz? I guess the Giant team would have some bespoke hardware, but haven't heard of changes in the standard consumer product? @DVOSuspension

Edit: sorry, just saw this has been answered while I was typing. Curious to see the new Topaz!
  • + 3
@dvosuspension are the mods on the new shock going to be retrofittable?! I love my Topaz, but more betterer is always betterer!
  • + 1
 @OGTallPaul: Yeah would be cool!
  • + 3
@DVOSuspension: any particular reason the emerald isn't on the DH bikes?
  • + 1
 @DVOSuspension:
What about the opal? And when would a topaz 2 be available. I am about to get a topaz tuned for my Recluse and don't want to drop 500$ just to have the new cut comenoitnin a couple months.
  • + 3
@MortifiedPenguin: The team will be using the new Onyx DH Fork!
  • + 2
@DVOSuspension: Reason? I will admit I am a bit of a inverted fanboy, so I was hoping to see it on the world cup circuit.
  • + 3
@MortifiedPenguin: It's very hard to manufacture an inverted bike fork that offers the same stiffness as traditional, while also keeping the weight down.
  • + 2
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: I have the Emerald and its great. I don't notice any issues with stiffness. With that said I'm not a WC DH rider and am not pushing my fork anywhere near as hard as those guys.
  • + 3
I am also disappointed not to see the emerald on Marcelo's bike. I don't buy that about the stiffness. I think it's a fallacy. The emerald is an unreal fork.

My guess is, too many people believe the bollocks about stiffness being the be all and end all of forks and just never consider one. DVO wanting to sell product (obviously) have decided to make what people are buying. Plus, you know what Giant is like for demanding absolute bottom prices for OEM spec parts. That is not really compatible with a fork like the Emerald, when they can spec a boxxer for literally half the cost.
  • + 1
@DVOSuspension: Topaz2 gonna have the shock mount for Stumpy/Enduros?! Been waiting in the wings to grab a new shock for my Stumpy, close to pulling the trigger on Topaz, but would be more than happy to wait if T2 will have an option for me ????
  • + 1
@DVOSuspension: So if you are working with Giant's team from XC up, does this mean there is a shorter stroke shock and smaller eye to eye?
  • + 1
@reverend27: The new Opal won’t be out till mid year and it’s a in-line air shock meant for bikes that cant fit a larger shock or for shorter travel bikes. I’d go for the Topaz on the Recluse, we have a few of them in our test fleet and it makes that bike come alive!
  • + 1
@stolenface88: We have the current Topaz model available for those bikes and not sure we will offer the new Topaz 2 for those models yet.
  • + 1
@DVOSuspension: please could you briefly describe Topaz 2 features or refer me to some materials? Unless it's too early of course. And thanks for your fast and helpful replies each time I was asking you some questions via email Smile Top notch customer support! Love you guys!
  • + 1
@DVOSuspension: Thanks the opal is for my 120mm spark. Glad to see you guys getting in with Giant.
As I see you guys are gonna kill the midprice fork market with the beryl.
Same damper as your top of the line Diamond no other suspension company does that.
In a market filled with greed and poor customer service you guys shine.
Thanks
  • + 1
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: Inverts tend to be stiffer under front to rear stress than a traditional design, but lack torsional stiffness. Some people like the torsional flex as it allows the fork to track the ground, while others find the flex concerning and detrimental to their riding.
  • + 10
I love DVO and since you can rebuild their shocks without special vacuum tools they defo have to better than some for race rebuilds.I love their diamond forks good luck to them i say!! GO DVO!
  • + 8
 Thx buddy!
  • + 1
Absolutely. Saves a lot in maintenance and they are hepful if you have questions or want to retune.
  • + 2
@DVOSuspension: Wait a bikeshop that doesnt have a lot of specialty rear shock rebuilding tools, can rebuild your shocks?
  • + 1
@chillrider199: Yup. i rebuilt mine in the shed, dead simple, on the jade coil you can even shim it. Whoo wait a minute does that mean it will cost me £20-30 to service my shock not £120 plus shipping. So i love the feel of my DVO fork and shock and they are saving me cash. Job done. For a privateer or a pro they have gotta be you best hope for a track side tune or rebuild. Go DVO
  • + 1
@biglev: Woah... I didnt know you could do that. Thats actually insanely cool. A lot of money saved there. Good job DVO!
  • + 6
DVO gaining traction! right on. Had the chance to try a DVO diamond and was certainly impressed. Its like what the RS pike is trying to be. Super plush initial stroke, nice sensitivity to small bumps, but still a heavy hitter that feels bottomless.
  • + 1
What travel did you ride? Thinking of moving to dvo but not sure how noodly it'll be at 170mm
  • + 1
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: I ride the 170mm hard here in Colorado. Few days even at Trestle bike park, jump trails, 4 trips down Whole Enchilada in Moab, zero issues.
  • + 2
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: 170 boost wasnt the stiffest thing in the world but it was definitely enough
  • + 2
 Thanks!
  • + 2
I’ll never buy RS again. Total convert. The Diamond delivers everything the Charger claims too and more. I now believe volume reducers are asinine.
  • + 2
@inter71: I agree, 3 volume spacers in a Lyrik but I never had to change the volume on my diamond, it’s plenty supportive
  • + 3
As an old Marzocchi fan, it's great to see their predecessor succeed in such a big way. Over the years, I've replaced several stock RS forks with Marzocchi's and always got great results. I really dig my Topaz, which replaced a RS shock.
  • + 3
Great news for DVO! Those guys know their suspension. I'm loving the DVO Diamond and Topaz on my Canfield Balance, along with the DVO Garnet dropper post. Visiting them at the race pits or stopping by the Valencia headquarters, it's always fun talking shop with the crew running the operation. Ronnie is a living legend. Above and beyond customer service, too.

Say hi to the cheeseburger next time you're there for me!!! OOHHOOOHHH!!! @ronnie-dvo is the cheeseburger going on the race circuit???? It can travel the globe and meet all the other cheeseburgers out there!!! #cheeseburgerraceteam!!!!!
  • + 1
@whattheheel: I think you'd secretly like to take a big 'ol bite out of that infamous cheeseburger!
  • + 1
Hell no!! I try and avoid McDonald's like the plague!!
  • + 2
@DVOSuspension . Thankyou for making amazing performance suspension. With help from @NSDynamics, I upgraded to a topaz rear shock and a Beryl front fork on a 2011 Stumpy 29. The benefits of the fork are huge increases in stiffness and control throughout the whole stroke. The rear went from a Brain to a topaz and the differences are obvious. No more wooden feeling platform as there are 3 easy ride settings. Also it is so user serviceable and easy to tune. Cant wait to play with the ott settings also on the fork..

Thanks..

My Norco Range is coming with DVO, I can’t wait to be riding DVO.
  • + 7
Hell yeah! Enjoy that ride buddy, let us know if you need any help!
  • + 7
Waiting on mine too. The DVO sold me on it. Best bargain on the market right now. The C7.3 is far superior to the C7.2, yet it is way less expensive!!!! Smile
  • + 1
same here, hope to get my new Range C3 in couple of weeks.
  • + 2
Mine is on order too. I couldn't begin to justify the price jump for the C7.2, way better bang for buck. I'm going to replace the brakes and cockpit almost immediately I think.
  • + 3
The Norco/DVO Range is a bad ass machine!
  • + 1
@roasterthetoaster: Already have some Saints ready, as well as a sixc bar, OneUp traction ring and a sick set of Tairin carbon wheels.
I heard the delay is to to too long a stroke on the rear shock. They are just adjusting them now and will ship as soon as they are all fixed

@mtnrush666 I personally know Joe Staub, and last autumn I went for a ride with some of the team riders. He explained to me that his job / and Giants job is to offer the racers the best possible platform to ride and perform their best. That means the programme that they have is their for the riders to grow, gain experience and maybe move up in the ranks. Whatever the riders do with it is up to them, I personally thought that was pretty cool because at the end of the day its all about riding your bike and having fun. It was a blast riding with Marcello and Eliot.
I team of the caliber giving DVO a chance is a big thing...and yes we will be expecting my OEM from DVO.
Thanks guys for the great ride @ Lenzerheide

I hope that DVO will be selling shock sizes that are compatible with the new Rein. I would love to put a topaz on my 2018, but the new trunion mount makes it not possible. Hope to see this happen. Looks like they already have it figured out on the Giant team bikes. @DVOSuspension

@DVOSuspension How much stiffer than the Diamond will the Onyx SC be?
I'm on a non-boost Diamond now, but I would love some more tire clearance and chassis stiffness, performance is spot on otherwise and it's super easy to set up right.

I happily ditched a RS shock for a DVO Topaz. I'm not a huge fan of the green, but it's not so bad in person and I just enjoy the performance so much more.
  • + 1
Seems like an accurate statement. Also, agreed on the green. I run DVO front and rear but I wish they'd offer some all black models for those of us looking for a bit more subtlety.

Better buy a boost version anyway so it has a better value if you decide to sell it one day.... Just buy an adaptor so your 100mm hub fit on the 110mm fork!
