Known as MIPS Spherical, the new Aether MIPS helmet integrates MIPS between two layers of EPS foam in the helmet's liner, allowing the exterior liner/helmet shell to rotate independently around the rider's head and redirect energy away from the brain in the event of an impact.

Viewers with a keen eye may have noticed riders from the BMC Mountainbike Racing Team and the Clif Pro Team wearing our new Giro Aether MIPS helmet at the most recent World Cup XC in Vallnord, Andorra. Debuting this helmet at the highest level, with some of the world’s top riders, was a moment we’d been anticipating for nearly two years as the Aether slowly came to life between our design studio, test lab and the factory.
Although it poured rain leading up to the race, and the forecast had predicted more rain leading up to the race, once race day arrived riders faced a blazing hot sun, high temperatures and exposed trails. Combined with Andorra’s elevation at 2,000m, this high-altitude World Cup was destined to be a challenge.
As one of the most technical cross-country mountain bike courses on the circuit and with warm temperatures on race day, Andorra was a perfect course for riders to benefit from the revolutionary design and performance of the new Aether MIPS. Designed to help keep riders cool, with deep internal channeling to complement massive vents, the Aether ensures that air moves through the helmet and exhausts heat out with maximum efficiency.
In addition to comfort and incredible cooling power, a pro-level XC helmet needs to provide the best possible protective capability for racing. The new Aether MIPS features an innovative new version of MIPS technology, developed in the Dome laboratory, that eliminates the plastic slip plane inside the helmet to optimize comfort, ventilation and performance.
After a tough day of racing, riders shared their thoughts about the new helmet:
“The reality in the sport of Mountain biking is that we will crash. It's just part of the game. But having a helmet that we can trust gives us huge confidence to do our thing and give our best knowing we are well protected. That's why were so excited about the new Giro Aether and this amazing technology that make it so safe.” — Maghalie Rochette of the Clif Pro Team
“The new Aether is fresh and comfortable. And its sliding layer is quite impressive -- impossible to feel when riding but giving some extra confidence." — Lars Forster of the BMC Mountainbike Racing Team
“The Giro Aether is light and comfortable. It also looks nice, and of course, I love the custom design that matches my Swiss Champion jersey.” — Filippo Colombo of the BMC Mountainbike Racing Team
We were stoked to watch Joshua Dubu take first place, and Filippo Colombo take third, in the Men’s U23 category and we couldn’t be happier for them on their podium finishes. It’s an incredible high to get such positive results and feedback when you’ve dedicated years trying to advance the start of the art with a product like Aether, while giving riders the best equipment possible for racing.
