Give Big – Two New Trail Opportunities in Washington State

Give Big Two New Trail Opportunities in Washington State

Agreements are in place. Crews are on the ground.
We just need you.

No exaggeration. We have a rare opportunity to self-fund two projects in the Town of Skykomish—but only with your support now (seriously).

You can make this happen. We have until the snow returns to complete a 10-mile subalpine loop at Alpine Baldy, and to design and flag new trails at Maloney Rock—which has potential to offer the largest shuttle-able vertical DH trail in Washington State.

Permits expire and weather windows close—if we don’t (beat the Fall snow and) fund these two new trails now, we may lose them, or be forced to wait years before we have this unique opportunity again. Give Big now to help make Skykomish an epic trail town.

GiveBig Today

Skykomish, WA: Three Projects in a Growing Trail Town

Alpine Baldy: Epic Views At 5,000'

In 2016, you helped raise funds to build Phase 1—a challenging 7-mile trail opening this summer. But why stop at an out-and-back when permits are in place to build a 10-mile loop?

This rare opportunity is unique, and you can make this sub-alpine loop happen today. Crews are already on the mountain. Help them start Phase 2 this summer. With luck, we’ll complete the loop before the snow returns and you’ll be riding this breathtaking loop next spring.

Maloney Rock: Potential for the Largest Vertical in Washington with Shuttle Access!

Maloney Rock: a grand viewpoint of the entire Skykomish River Valley, towers right above the town of Skykomish.

Evergreen is donating crew time to design and flag a trail network that promises to be one of the best trail systems in the region.

Combined with an extension to Sobieski Peak behind it, Maloney could offer shuttle-able downhill trails starting at 4,400’ and descending 3,400’—that’s Whistler-level riding right in Skykomish.

But we need you to make this happen and there is no other design funding without your donation today. We’re taking a risk by flagging trail corridors now (as you read this), in the hopes that Give Big donations will help cover our expenses. We’re not holding back and we hope you don’t either!

Skykomish Pump Track

A few blocks from the Maloney Rock trailhead sits the Skykomish Pump track. Fun and family-friendly, this track will be the highlight of this growing trail town.

You helped fund this track last year, and it’s opening this summer! Your direct support leads to new places to ride and jobs for our crew. Let’s keep it going.

Why Give Big Now?

We have a short window of opportunity to make the Alpine Baldy loop happen this year, and we need Maloney flagged ASAP to enable environmental reviews this summer.

We need to move fast. Permits expire, the weather turns, and we want to deliver these projects to you now so we don’t miss out on this unique opportunity and help turn Skykomish into the riding destination it can be!

Schedule your GiveBig donation today, talk to your employer about donation matching, and share this post with friends. With your help, we can self-fund these projects and deliver an incredible trail network to Washington’s newest trail town.

So rad, high country xc on one side of the highway, big shuttle descents on the other, lift assist bike park up the road, and the awesomeness that are the Leavenworth-to-Wenatchee trails just over the pass. Not to mention Mad River, Entiat, Chelanigans. Lots of BIG riding in this zone with killer scenery and about 10 different micro climates. World class! Donated!

I don't live in Washington State but I do visit family there. I have ridden in a bunch of locations while visiting family there and can honestly say that WA has got their shit together when it comes to advocacy and being proactive for the mountain bike community. I think this can be a great platform for our community to give back and help to create a thriving environment for the future of mountain biking. Even if you do not live in WA and or think you are not directly benefiting or affected by the success of this project, think again. Little successes like this can help move our entire industry no matter what state it is in, especially when we can come together and help the greater good cause. I live in Hawaii and know first hand at how hard it is to get the green light to develop, try and find the funding, and then the workforce to actually do the job. This organization has everything in place they just need our help. No matter the amount, it will add up to help... Count me in...

@chillaxin: I don't know what I would do w/o Evergreen. All of the trails I ride are pretty much bike-only one-way trails. I can't believe that is any issue elsewhere....

@chillaxin: I agree, I used to live in Seattle and in the last 8 years since I left, it seems like the trails have grown exponentially back in the evergreen state with an extremely well run enduro racing series, the Cascadia Dirt Cup series, working with local venues to give back to the trails. I love going back to visit and seeing the mtbk scene exploding...I will also donate to this project, they're making it so easy...and I agree small successes like this Skykomish trail network can be looked at as models for other areas of the country and reverberations will be felt. I don't know the history, but Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance seems to have become an extremely effective advocacy group in Washington state. And they are not part of IMBA from what I understand...maybe this is a sign that a smaller, more local advocacy group can be more effective without the larger international organization of IMBA, without being hampered by policy imposed from thousands of miles away. I can also see major benefits like economies of scale by being part of IMBA as well...pros and cons for sure.

@Hammerschmidt: Indeed. It's about five people in the office, a pile out building trails and teaching people how to ride. And ultimately, all of them ride the trails they are advocating for. There are also chapters within Evergreen for each region outside of the Puget Sound area. ie: Leavenworth / Central, Spokane / Eastern, etc.

I wish Oregon could be more like Washington in this way... Good thing we are close! Donated!

Well, Washington is still nothing like BC. However, Evergreen is very effective at working through the BS. Talk to the team at Evergreen about how to improve Oregon, cool folks!

@boxxerace: I would love to see an Oregon chapter opened... I love what Evergreen has done and the trails they produce!

@Holstermx26: @EvergreenBryan Wadda think Bryan? Too much of a jump, or future plans?

More can always be done but things are pretty gangbusters right now here in Oregon. I'm a part of the trail crew at Dirt Mechanics based out of Bend OR. The USFS as well as several local bike clubs has had us busy on several projects. These include work on O Leary in Mckenzie Bridge which is a epic 5 hr ride, an extension on Lawler in Oakridge which is one of the best trails in the PNW, a public bike park in Prineville, several miles of trails as part of a multi year 50 mile network near Klamath Falls including a black diamond trail we are currently building with Big jumps and tech for everyone, a new trail at Silver Falls State park that will include much more in the future, as well as various other projects statewide. Later this year breaking ground in eastern Oregon on a ski resort trail system and have some projects in the works statewide that are going to really open up options in a state already blessed with several hundred miles of awesome traiils. It's happening!!

@mocean365: So rad! I am talking specifically Portland area, should have mentioned that! You are doing rad work my friend!!!! Thanks for continuing to push and build some rad stuff here Smile
  • 2 0
@boxxerace: No future plans as of Right now. We are sitting pretty comfortably inside the Washington Boundaries. We are more focused on making what we already have the best it can be. @mocean365 is on point though, groups like his and BRMBA have been crushing it in Oregon!

If you want more insight on our chapter system take a listen to this interview our Executive Director, Yvonne Kraus, had with Front Lines Podcast - www.bikeski.ca/uploads/2/4/5/0/24502583/ep_13_-_2017-04-18_07.54_.mp3

It is great to see this kind of effort. But. Something needs to be done about the traffic going west on HWY 2 in the afternoons. During the summer months there are back ups for miles. As always build it and they will come. Than the need for Hwy's that bypass towns are develop (not a lot of options in that area). I can understand Skykomish wants to attract business/dollars spent but if traffic becomes bad enough people will avoid Hwy 2. Perhaps there can be a choice of taking the train, say from Monroe with your bike.

I stopped Skiing at Stevens Pass for that reason alone. The lights in Goldbar / startup result in such bad traffic I'll simply not go. Totally agree with you! Even a round about would be better than those lights!
  • 3 0
I used to live in Monroe and I was so excited to get out because of how bad the traffic is. You can't even go to Stevens Pass on Sunday because the what would be an hour drive back into Monroe takes twice as long. There's so many other spots to build in the area why not set their sights on Granite Falls?
  • 1 0
@MarysvilleJack: That's an excellent recommendation. I drove out there yesterday for one of my kids track meets. Yes, the I5 / US 2 interchange is a mess, but the rest of the drive was easy and quick. And the mountains, oh the mountains are right there!

Donated! Stoked to see more shuttleable DH trails in WA!

And to think, work is offering WA as a place to relocate to. Hmmmm, could this be a sign?
  • 28 1
Don't do it man. It rains on average 197" a year, roughly about 3 days of sun. Unemployment is currently at 39%. There's something in the water that gives everyone dysentery, most people have herpes 1 AND 2 and just awful, awful gingivitis. Ever hear of scurvy? Well it's still around. And serious depression runs rampant amongst all age groups so if you don't ever hear from me again, well, you know...........................
  • 10 0
@johnnygolucky: It'd be east of the mountains. Less rain. So, yeah, I'm moving to clog up your trails...
  • 3 0
@macross87: Spokompton? Come ride bikes with me!
  • 3 0
@swan3609: likely Quincy/Wenatchee area. Data Centers are us
  • 7 0
@macross87: It's double the Scurvy, dysentery, herpes, and gingivitis and add syphilis when you go on that side of the mountains.
  • 2 0
 @johnnygolucky:
And if you think Washington is bad, you don't even want to hear about Oregon.
  • 9 0
@johnnygolucky: Don't forget ~10% sales tax, no sun, Sasquatch/Bigfoot, Ferry traffic, and passing the ball in the final seconds of the superbowl... :/ No reason to come to WA, just stay in Cali everyone

Man.. this would be so huge for Snohomish County. Really looking forward to seeing how this develops.

@somismtb Uncle Brian has a place here.

 Hell yeah!

Lookit Yvonne throwing dirt! Hardest working ED in show-biz... ;-)

Keep killing it, EMBA! Donated.
  • 1 0
What if we don't want it to be shuttle-able downhill? Rather pristine enduro... I would donate in a heartbeat for this. But not if it's shuttled. I like being able to escape the rush of the world when I ride.

 Looks sick. Good luck.
