'Goggles for Docs’ Program Launched to Donate Goggles to Health Care Workers

Apr 20, 2020
by Ed Spratt

With the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing, medical staff around the world are continuing their invaluable work helping those who have become seriously ill with the virus. But in many countries, there is simply not enough protective equipment for them to be properly equipped to stop themselves from becoming ill. This is where Goggles for Docs is hoping to help.

Goggles for Docs is a newly formed organization that has the sole purpose of supplying medical staff goggles who currently are working without proper eye protection equipment when treating patients with COVID-19. The group was formed by members of the ski and snowboard industry after they found that goggles had become a valuable piece of personal protective equipment for health care workers. So far over 32,000 goggles have been donated.

You can find out more and donate here.

So far Fox, Bell & Giro, Smith Optics and 100% have all supported Goggles for Docs with large donations of goggles for medical staff.

bigquotesFor the month of April, we will be matching your goggle purchases with a one-for-one donation to Goggles For Docs. Each pair of goggles you purchase means a new pair for a healthcare professional on the frontlines. Thank you so much for your support. Together we can go great things.Fox

bigquotesOur Bell and Giro products are designed first and foremost to keep people safe, whether they are commuting to work or recreating in the outdoors. In light of the ongoing pandemic, our products are now proving to be an essential element for health care workers responding to the unprecedented public health crisis the world faces as we tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. This personal protective equipment, or PPE can help doctors, nurses, and other first responders focus on what they do best, and where they are needed most. Bell + Giro, and the entire Vista Outdoor family is indebted to our country’s medical professionals, and it is our duty to do everything we can to support them.Chris Sword, President of Bell & Giro

bigquotesThe Goggles for Docs program materialized in just a few days to support hospital need, and is based solely on volunteer support and product donation. Smith is currently sending new and used goggles to fulfill hospital requests, and will continue to promote the program, encouraging our community to volunteer and donate on an individual level.⁣Smith Optics

bigquotesStronger together. 100% Together.

With so many caregivers being encouraged to purchase their own Personal Protection Equipment, we thought we would help them out. We are pleased to have donated over 1,000 pairs of sports performance eyewear, all outfitted with clear, UltraHD lenses to those fighting on the front lines, our heroes. We will get through this, together.

What kind of goggles?
"Please only donate ski-style goggles (the same style used for motocycles, snowmobiles, etc.) or lab goggles. Please DO NOT donate any type of swim goggle."

What guidelines should I follow to donate safely?
"Be sure to follow these guidelines if you drop off or mail goggles or watch this short video for a tuturial from Chris Kratt."

Tinted or clear lenses?
"Either. They have nothing. Dark lenses are better than a COVID cough to the face."

Used or new goggles?
"Most of these goggles will be used. Again, used lenses are better than a COVID cough to the face."

Only mentioning because I know BC is a big demographic on here, if anyone in the lower mainland is thinking about doing this we actually have a ton of visors/face shields/goggles right now (all of the hospitals). We're concerned about running out of N95 masks but the rest of the stuff is not looking like a shortage at the moment. Please instead donate to local food banks if you can.

Same in the Interior, lots of safety Glasses and shields, so far.... Had a shipment of our PPE diverted just b4 the border about a month ago, contained masks, and shields. Currently we are cleaning our shields and "recycling" our masks. CAN"T wait to get that first return shipment of recyled masks....

Can you contract Coronavirus through your eyes?
  • 7 2
No one can say for certain right now, but your eyes are a mucous membrane and it is suspected that it is indeed possible. Better safe than sorry, especially if you're a healthcare worker treating a new and not yet fully understood disease.
  • 6 2
Is this a real question? Eyes, nose, mouth (especially eyes) are moisture, mucous, blood-vessel, and plasma-rich which makes them the most immediate passages for viruses to enter the body.
  • 9 0
@DirtbagMatt: yes it was a legit question? I had not heard of that since the outbreak. I thought it was a respiratory virus that manifested in the lungs. Good to know
  • 5 0
The virus attacks the lungs but it can enter the body through the eyes, nose, mouth etc.
  • 1 0
The VAST majority of viruses and a a good chunk of bacteria can enter throught the eyes. A US CDC showed that the #1 POE (point of entry, not points of engagement) was the eyes. People touch stuff and then at some point touch their face by their eyes (long haired people way more often).

This is awesome! I see lots of donation centers across my state (Colorado) yet when I search for hospitals in Colorado I only see a single hospital that is requesting one pair of goggles? I guess that means although there are plenty of places to donate, at this time, no hospitals near me need goggles? Guess it would still make sense to ship a pair to the closest state that has a significant demand?
  • 20 17
I wonder if I send in my $100 goggles if the hospital will credit them towards my $1330 bill for the two IV bags that cost them maybe $2.

Maybe it's time to message your senator in regards to universal healthcare instead of being a downer about a good thing on a bike forum?

@ashlemon Nice work with those, people need to start waking up and realising whats is really going on here.

Do they get to keep them so they can wear them around their necks while having a beer at the GLC?
  • 1 0
Does anybody know if there is an organization in Canada doing the same thing?
  • 1 0
Yep. There’s a ski simulation store in north van accepting donations.
  • 2 0
In BC, they are currently not seeking donations of unapproved or unconventional forms of PPE. I believe thats similar for most other jurisdictions in Canada, as our supply chain is relatively intact.

this website lists BC's current PPE requirements, and links to health Canadas PPE standards for COVID

 Are they taking tear-offs, too?
  • 15 0
Pulls a tear-off between patients; boss move!
  • 3 0
That's my job at the hospital: picking up all the PPE on the ground and disinfecting everything from the bed to the instruments. More work for me to do, but I'll gladly do it! Maybe I can convince em to use roll-offs.

@Ron-C: thanks for doing what you do. Doctors and nurses get all the publicity, which they deserve, they work hard, but without people like you and the hundreds of other less-visible jobs, none of that direct patient care is possible. Here's to you!

Goggle Docs? Is phrasing not a thing anymore?
  • 1 0
I wanna donate my goggle but I live in Vancouver and there is nothing for Canadian Hospitals on the web site!!!! Frown
  • 1 0
Hospitals in BC dont currently have the same supply chain issues as other areas of the world. As such, they are not actively collecting unapproved or unconventional forms of PPE at this time.

How many googles could he afford just with one hundredth or even a thousandth of what he owns?
  • 9 12

@savagelake: He donates his salary but takes several unnecessary trips a month to his own resorts where he has the government pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars every time to house his security staff.

Follow your ``leader``, don`t respect the shut down, go outside, get your guns against the plot, and contaminate more inbreds like you please.

@Beez177: Obama 322 times in 8 years, often at Andrews Air Force base or other military institutions where there was little additional cost for security and no personal profit for himself vs Trump's 249 times in less than 4 years mostly at his own private resorts where he personally profited from taxpayer's money.

Golfing when you should be presidenting is pretty shitty either way. I am not from the US, I have no loyalty to either party but if you think Trump and his family aren't making millions of dollars from the presidency because he gives away 400k a year or that what he does is normal you are either easily misled or deliberately ignoring easily searchable records.

@Beez177: @Beez177: I do worry about my country. It is being run by a Trump wannabe who is only barely more competent.

@toastbrot51: You follow Trump's golf outings? Somebody has too much time on their hands....
  • 2 2
@Beez177: I do worry about myself, which means I also take interest in other country's politics, specifically the ones with pathological liars as leaders. Oh and I'm sick of people just stating what they believe are facts without even having a faint idea of what they are talking about.
Oh and no, I don not specifically follow Trump's golfing outings. But I did do my research before posting stuff on the internet. Something you apparently didn't do.
