Large Bear Chasing Rider Caught on GoPro – Video

May 8, 2017
by Pinkbike Staff

Thanks to every man and their dog having a GoPro (or similar device), we're likely going to continue seeing more of this sort of thing in the future, but that doesn't make it any less wild. Your heart would be between your ears if you saw a big, healthy looking bear chasing your friend who was only moments before, a second or two ahead of you on the trail. Is it real or fake? It sure looks legit. Would you stop or try and out run the bear?

There was no chase. It looked as if the bear was running away from the clatter of the bikes on the trail and chose an unfortunate panic direction. He only shared the trail just long enough to pick a better direction to get away.
  • + 30
The same clip has this BS clickbait title on a site called theinertia.com :

"Watch this Massive Bear Literally Try and Eat a Downhill Mountain Biker in Slovakia"

f'n joke.

I dunno, looked to me like the bear was going for the first rider then changed his mind when the guy on his flank started yelling. I guess someone will have to ask the bear.

  • + 2
I had this same kind of experience 2 years ago. A bear went out and ran by my side for a good 20 seconds. I knew it wasn't running for me but since it looked a bit small I was searching the mother and was panicked since I didn't want to be in between them because she would have been running to get me for sure.
  • + 1
 Yep, its fake news bruh
  • + 4
@dylandoe Yeah man. It´s all just bullshit. If a cat or dog did there would be no crap like this, but ouh yeah it´s a mean f*cking huge bear, let´s kill them all!!!!! I totally agree with you, was thinking the same thing. Poor bear. It´s amazing to see them though, I get stoked whenever I come across a wild boar! In whistler Ive ridden past bears, and they are cool with it

European Brown Bear: Ursus arctos arctos
Grizzly Bear: Ursus arctos horribilis

The North American is bigger and mor agressive than his european brother.

sorry but I had to...
  • + 2
@squarewheel: It was my understanding that there was no effective genetic difference in all Ursus arctos versions.
The differences were due to geography, diet etc

If you meet a bear in the woods and don't know what kind it is, climb a tree. A black bear will climb the tree after you, and then eat you. A grizzly bear will knock the tree down, and then eat you.
  • + 7
The guy should have kept going. It's the best way to improve your strava time.
  • + 9
 I'd shit myself.
  • + 5
What do you even do as the last rider in that situation? Just stop and look at the bear? Try and pass it? None of those seem like good options.
  • + 5
He picked the best option - shouting.
  • + 3
It looks legit to me. Look at the first rider's reaction. I don't think it's fake. I've been carrying bear spray in this: www.amazon.com/UDAP-Mens-GM-Spray-Mount/dp/B009204YI8

I'm not at the top of the food chain in Montana, and my Han Solo Enduro Edition blaster is too heavy to pack, so bear spray it is.

@cmc4130 the Whistler bears don't give a $&!+ (even in the woods) about riders. They've been not 10 feet below us going up the chair. There was one on Heckler's rock when we went off of it years ago, and last year there was one about 5 feet off the trail at the container drop and a bunch of riders went right by without seeing it, or the bear even moving. We thought it had moved off, and went over the drop, he was still there.
  • + 2
Mama bear charged me up there last year just to make a point that I passed too close to her cub. Came up right to my bike.
  • + 6
@kathwill: had a run-in last summer too, came off a drop to see mama and 2 cubs. I crashed to avoid rolling up right on them because she was right on the side of the trail. Luckily she accepted my apologies and let me climb back up the hill and a bit away from them. I'm glad she didn't charge, because then I definitely would have shit myself.
  • + 4
@Crooks: Then my wife had to top my story by going out and getting pursued by a cougar on her bike.
  • + 3
@kathwill: oh damn, now that is a situation I wouldn't even know what to do in
  • + 9
@kathwill: you seriously submitted a post with "wife" and "cougar" on pb??

You're braver than the second rider.
  • + 2
I ran into a bear last weekend in Squamish. Came right up on it on Mashiter heading back down towards Rollercoaster to end my ride. It was 5 feet away. It shy'd off into the bush and I didn't stick around to find out if there was a bigger one around looking after it. I've encountered 3 bears at very close range in the last 5 years of riding. I carry bear spray if I'm going to be a fair distance from the parking lot where I may encounter a bear that doesn't run into humans that much. But otherwise, if there are bears in the area they don't give a shit that humans are around. They're more interested in those sweet sweet berries. Can't blame them.
  • + 1
We saw a cub yesterday while climbing up to Half Nelson, just a bit below the turnoff for Skookum.
  • + 10
I impacted a black bear in the gatineau park 27 years ago. Night time. Dicky little cateye bike light. I got like eight feet notice he was standing in the trail eating a berry bush. He got no notice at all until he took 200 pounds of impact to his ribs. I launched over bars and bear and bear launched into the forest.
  • + 5
Flick says he saw some grizzly bears near Pulaski's candy store.
  • + 3
@dstroud70: you'll shoot your eye out
  • + 1
@deeeight: Glad you survive that tell us the story, man, I'll probably shit and pee right there.
  • + 3
 @Lashidalgo:

I almost didn't survive my friends coming down the trail behind me who nearly ran me over. I had gone first because my 2-C battery halogen light was the brightest one of the three of us. A whopping 1.25 watts of bulb output... good for all of maybe 10 lumens. Anyone old enough to remember the lights know the ones I mean, and that a $3 LED blinker from a dollar store today is brighter and more useful.

Black bear encounters are actually a reasonably regular occurence around here while trail riding, I have one at least yearly. The XC sunset series races at Camp Fortune in Chelsea,QC in the 90s routinely had bears on-course and riders just waited for them to move off-course before they went around them. I ride with a bear banger launcher on the front straps of my hydro-pack to this day as a result. Two years ago I rode past the resident bear in the south march highlands trail system trying to get away from the cloud of mosquitoes and blackflies which were driving me insane. It was about 2 meters to the side of me when I went past. Growled a hello and that was it. Hasn't attacked a single rider/hiker in the ten years its been living in that forest.
  • + 2
Reminds me of a few summers back when a group of us spooked a mountain lion up while riding in Pemberton. Ended up inadvertently chasing it down the trail for about 20 meters before she darted off into the woods. We were glad that she was more afraid of us than we were of her. Certainly got the heart rate going.
  • + 2
I'm pretty sure bears can run up to like 40mph unless your last name is Atherton you probably aren't gonna outrun the bear on a downhill section. I was thinking being the guy behind filming would be scarier just waiting for that bear to turn around.
  • - 2
40k bro... Still pretty fast! Bears also have shorter front legs which makes them less stable on steep downhills.
  • + 3
@mollow: This is totally untrue. They can run just as fast downhill.
  • + 4
Saw this on NSMB. I am disappointed. The bear gave up wayyy too easy. If that bear wanted to eat him it would have.
  • + 2
Naah the bear just knew the trail and went to the right to cut them of. They were smart to stop as soon after there was a right turn and a flatter, slower part of the track. The bear would be waiting for them. I ride that tack pretty regularly, hell I've spent 40+ days 4 or 5 years ago there and I've never seen a bear there. A ton of other wildlife sure but a bear is a surprise.
  • + 1
Come on, something like this is obvious, if that bear had wanted the rider, it would have had the rider. I think these two were lucky that they didn't collide with a scared animal that was just trying to get away. If the bear was stalking, their decision to freeze up would not have gone well. Lucky folks. Beautiful animals.
  • + 5
I doubt it's fake. We saw at least 5 bears in Whistler over 4 days.
  • + 12
are you sure it wasn't the same bear?
  • + 1
 @imho4ep:

He's not lying mate it's pretty common to see bears every day in whistler
  • + 1
The rider in the front wasn't even aware of the bear. He stopped because he kept hearing his friend scream and yell and wondered what was up so he stopped. I believe the bear was more in defense mode than attack mode. It was a smaller bear too so I doubt it was defending any cubs. Still, it makes for an exciting video but to everyone who thinks the front rider is an idiot for stopping I doubt he was even aware there was a bear on his right hand side.
  • + 3
Had a bear run beside me once in Nanaimo, was trying to get out of the way but he ran beside me for a bit, scary as hell, he just wanted to get the f outta there.
  • + 5
Phhh this is nothing Try riding a bike through Croydon at night....
  • + 2
If you go to various car parks at night, in most of the UK woodlands, just sit in your car and flash your lights, you'll get plenty of attention , some I'm sure will be from "bears" .
  • + 1
I see bears on many rides here. I've had a couple close encounters but all have been fine. I crashed my bike to avoid hitting a bear, I lay on the ground looking up at him and he stood looking down at me. He didn't do anything so I got up and hiked back up the trail , another time I peed on a bear, I didn't notice he was feeding in the bush untill he snorted at me, I peed on his face! Also had one come into my house at night. Wife woke me up saying something was in the house.had to chase it out. So far all have been just fine and make really great stories. Never been charged or chased though. That would be scary. Great video.
  • + 3
When your buddy says he's taking you to the bike park to ride with Berrecloth...make sure he's talking about Darren.
  • + 3
I love nature..it's why I ride. Good job capturing a bear on video. Absolutely wonderful.
  • + 3
You don't have to be faster than the Bear! Just be faster than your friend!
  • + 1
So bruin put his tail down and waited and waited but no fish came.
So he tried to eat a mountain biker but the 29" wheels were too fast.
Bruin would have had dinner if it were only a 26er.

^^^^^ Pawsatively Grizzly attempt
  • + 1
Whoa that's super scary... anyone know what the best thing to do is in this situation? If the bear had stayed on the trail, do you think it would get out of your way or attack?
  • + 2
I've had this happen. Scared a black bear and rode next to it for a bit as it tried to run away. It was probably more scared than me!
  • + 1
The truth is that if you are attacked by a bear you have to smear with shit ... where do you find them you are probably asking .... Well in your pants you will find plenty of them ....

haha i'll take rattlers and the occasional coyote all day down here in SD. bears are the sharks of the woods, you're pretty effed if they're curious how you taste.
  • + 2
Ditto, sortable. I'll take poisonous jellyfish, octopus, fish, and cone shells, hungry sharks and crocodiles over anything that will be on the trails. Possibly a snake is all that you need to worry about here.
  • + 6
@iamamodel: What? 99.9% of all of your creatures want to kill you down south. Here, we have border respecting bears that love the North West fitness craze and enjoy the odd trail run.

Looked like a clumsy juvenile having a bit of sport. Always carry something, anything. Yesterday I had nothing and an off-leash pitbull mix had a violent reaction to my noisy hub and wanted to punish my ankle. I usually have a fixed blade poker on my belt. Don't leave home without it. There are lions all around us, and although I love them, I'm not going down without a fight.
  • + 5
Don't try and bitchslap a bear with your bike pump though, that's not going to do anything but guarantee that the bear removes your face. Play dead for a grizzly, run from a black bear and either way, wish you had brought pepper spray. Point taken on the doggo though.
  • + 8
@Vaclav: Play dead for griz, fight back for a black bear. Bear spray is always your best bet.
  • + 9
@Vaclav: True - luckily I don't see a lot of bears. Except down on Folsom Street and they just want to cuddle.
  • + 6
@endlessblockades: those bears want to do much more than cuddle.

@TerrapinBen: Actually, you should lay down and pretend that you are a "Subway" tuna fish sandwich. Not even a bear would eat that.

When I watched it (popped into my feed from NSMB), the next video that played may have been the same guy or the same bike park, but it's a 7 minute POV of the dude riding this park so ragged that he eats the uphill side of the berms, including trees, 3 separate times.

It is a FANTASTIC video and I can't find it again. But you're on the edge of your seat watching and waiting for him to eat it. I won't ruin the surprise, but you can guess...stick through it to the VERY END if you find it!!! Big Grin

I laughed hysterically. My wife thinks I'm an idiot.

 @bizutch: how was that funny?
  • + 0
@treymotleyDH: sketchiest rider I've seen. It wasn't advertised or hyped. I just stumbled onto it. I knew he'd wreck multiple times and was on the edge of my seat waiting for the next hit.

When he goes screaming like a ninny into the lift line, I thought...this is it...he's gonna blow up, but nooooo.
Then...in the end of the video, he fully delivers on the "crash and moan" in epic fashion. What's not to love?
  • + 0
 @treymotleyDH: Also...soon as I saw those zip ties, I knew we'd get a show
  • + 2
@bizutch: I guess I don't find laughing at a new rider to be funny.
  • + 1
@bizutch: I mean you were actively sitting there waiting for the guy to crash again.
  • - 2
@treymotleyDH: Duh. You think he posted the video because he thought it wasn't funny. Hey edited himself and book ended it with two face plants. Pretty sure he saw the humor.

If this is a grizzly, it's fake (see the hump?). This video was supposedly shot in Slovenia. Grizzlies don't live in Europe.

I've run into black bears here in British Columbia three times now, either they look at you like they are not scared, or they bolt into the woods.

I think this was a shot for someone's Visual FX reel. Well done, will probably get them some work.
  • + 0
Are you saying it's not a brown bear because of the color? It's pretty common for brown bears can be copper or blonde like this I believe.
  • + 1
eurasian brown bear. apparently they're not as grumpy as their grizzly cousin

So are you suggesting it is a camel in bears clothing?

You're right it was probably a hologram..........
