 I’ve been still trying to pair my GoPro to my iPhone since this comp started...Any day now it’ll connect.

 @JacobSpera: I am only 15 i might be better than other people my age, but I suck, really bad, compared to aaron gwin. I just haven’t had as much expearience as he has. They might should base it off of age, put age groups.

 do you guys really expect, someone pumps that much money (ACTUAL CASH NOT PRODUCTS!!!) in an amateur contest?

 Its 20k up for grabs..... As long as its not a GoPro sponsored athlete I see no issue with "pros" entering.

 It's difficult to be exited to use your camera for something there is extremely little or no chance of winning. I think it would be nice to include a few randomly picked spot prizes, or a few booby prizes- worst (but serious) submissions, best commentary or something?

 @foxxyman: I was about to say that there was a nice GoPro for $40 in the PB Buy/Sell, but I just checked and it's sold. There's still a few under $100. Otherwise, sites like Craigslist, EBay, and maybe Amazon are good.

 @mtbikeaddict: Could be cool to 3d print a phone case of sorts that put on a helmet and (with phone) used as a gopro, kind of. guess that wouldn’t count for this contest though

 @foxxyman: Yeah... There's plenty of cheap action cameras, or attachments for the phone. The issue is that this is only for GoPros... And those suckers are expensive. I'm in the same boat as you... Don't have a GoPro, but not gonna buy new, so combing the classifieds. I've seen several (albeit older model) GoPros for around 30 bucks.. I think there's a couple on PB, and a couple newer for cheap on EBay. My local Craigslist has a couple, but you're probably in a different area. Best of luck.

 @Asmodai: don't want a mic attached to the gopro. you need a digital to analogue converter cable then plug the mic into that. can't do that and use a gimbal. I use a secondary recording device and rode smart lav

"Videos must be in MP4 format in HD or Higher Resolution (720p, 1080p, 1440, 2.5k, 4k) with no watermarks"

 Yeah, but we need to see really big air to compensate for the reduced gravity. And obviously if you crash in a puddle, congratulations!

 They often recommend 4:3 as it allows to crop to 16:9 in post to the optimal part of the frame.

 @CraigBrownie: That is correct! Sensor size is 4:3 and with this setting you get maximum view angle that can be cropped to 16:9 and eliminate slight errors in camera position. In the process of cropping to 16:9 you can also stabilize the video without too much digital "zoom" / reducing angle.

 the same year in which you record video in 8/4k even if your final render is 1080p it allows you to do so much more in post production

 @endlessblockades: The video featuring Aaron Gwin above shows him select it in settings. I've always used the same 16:9 settings as I've got my angle perfected so a little unsure of where to find it. I recalled watching a video saying the best idea is always to shoot 4:3. The reason is, 16:9 is actually a crop of 4:3, not the other way around. So you're getting more frame on the top and bottom of 16:9, giving you the ability to ensure you got what you want + stabilise in post.

I saw a video that said "Oh, just film your bike videos in 4:3 & then crop out the top or bottom you don't need. It didn't mention that GoPro did away with their Studio software and gutted it to this Quik crap, which will ONLY make 60 second videos, has NO editing options at all on my Windows 10 computer or ability to crop anything. So all I get is the 2.7K 4:3 video.

So if you shoot in 4:3, you'll have to find an editing software to chop off the top or bottom to have 16:9. I just downloaded one of the higher rated "freebie" softwares, but I've not tried to jump in and learn it because life calls. I need a "How to immediately look cooler with GoPro" crash course.

 @bizutch: well that's not a biased user base at all! Watch any of The Loam Ranger videos on YouTube and you'll see how well it works. He's posted 2 tutorials too, one for GoPro settings while filming and the second is for editing.

 If it is any thing like the GoPro of the world then no you wouldn’t be able to splice clips together. But maybe it is different this year, since it has a different name and all.

 Yep, no splicing—just a single line. You'll have to wait for pt. 2 and 3 of the contest to dust off your editing chops.

 @manchvegas: I was wondering the same thing. I have to assume the videos in the article weren't entries (at least, this year's) or similarly related to the contest... there was major editing/special effects going on, especially in the first video.

 Except there's a big difference between revenue and profit.
The retailer make $600, not GoPro.
GoPro then need to cover costs to make, pack and distribute the camera.
Profit then pays for R&D, customer service, branding etc. before you have some left to give in competition prizes.

 Happened to mine as well. Upload seems to go well, video ends up on the "gopro submission" category and on my user profile, but not on entry page. Figured it might go trough a review process before it would go up, but it has been several days now. Also, it seems there a quite a few videos in that category with a similar fate as mine.

 @cbro7092: Not being a financial expert that summary you linked to would have baffled me with bullshit into thinking things are going well for Gopro, yet the stock price has dropped from $11.69 to $4.53 since mid-October.

 @smithcreek: Point taken, but you cant argue that everything is bad when they pretty much have a monopoly on the market, as well as the biggest social media presence out of all action camera brands. For example GoPro have almost 3 times as many followers on IG as Sony - a company that sells many other products aside from cameras. Downvote me once again, but I love GoPro, their products and their marketing, and would support them through thick and thin.

 @cbro7092: They don't have the monopoly they once did- there are several competitors that give 90% of the performance of GoPro at about 20% of the price. I'm not exaggerating- check out the Yi 4K. The GP6 is absolutely terrible- over contrasted and saturated footage and absolutely horrific audio. All for £500. What a bargain. The fusion is the best 360 camera about ATM but I don't think there's a sufficiently large audience interested in paying £700 for 360 footage to keep GoPro in profit.

 @cbro7092: I have absolutely nothing against gopro, don't wish to see them fail or care if they own the market, so it's nothing personal to me. It's just interesting watching a company try to figure out how to survive, in this case when their one product can easily be not only copied but improved.

 @cbro7092: They have 80% share in the US. Less than 50% in Europe. (By volume). While there sales grew 28% over two years in China, no mention of market share. Also no mention of whether that 80% is losing or rising market share. And it appears they have lost $896,000,000 in the last two years. They reduced their GAAP losses this year, but did so by pulling out of the drone market (and firing a few hundred people). They do have a large social media presence, but I'm not sure that translates into as much as you would think. Sony's profits are up 10 fold, and were about $4,500,000,000.00 last year. They also segment their followers. Playstation has 10 million (plus probably a couple million more in the per country categories). If you add up all the different Sony Product followers, I think they would probably be quite a few more than GoPro, but hard to count unique followers.

You should always be sceptical of figures given mostly as percentage or "growth".
Percentage figures mean anything and usually nothing.
For example you can show "growth" simply my changing margins

 20k is chump change for a company like go pro. Its easily worth that money for them to get a collection of the coolest clips from all over the world for them to use for advertising and videos vs paying people to search through random youtube videos or highering riders and paying them to travel and fly all over the place to get the footage. Adverstising costs are a part of any companies budget and I am pretty certain that this contest has a lot more to do with advertising behind the scenes then it has to do with throwing a random contest for fun.

 This little 'giveaway' will yield more than 20k in profits I bet. It's all a matter of perspective.
