Gravity East Series Under New Management, 2015 Downhill and Dual Slalom Schedule Announced

Feb 25, 2015
by Mike Karfakis
New management announcement for the Gravity East Series in 2015.

In its 9th season, and as the longest running gravity race series in the U.S., the Gravity East Series is officially under new management for 2015. Mike Hartlove, of The Racer’s Edge, and Steve Coleman of Gravity Soul, have formally taken the reigns. The two have plans to grow the series by adding a dual slalom format, increasing purses and prizes, and focusing more specifically on the East Coast’s mid-Atlantic region.

Mike Hartlove, who was part of the original collective body of promoters who founded the GES in 2006, has witnessed Steve Coleman’s desire to put on great events in the dual slalom category through Gravity Soul. When presented with the opportunity to partner with Steve on the GES, Mike jumped at the chance. The two share a passion for the sport, and its lifestyle. Their roles will be carved out as follows:

Steve – Planning, permitting, sponsorship solicitation, pre/post event publicity, social media ambassador, event executions, post event reports.
Mike – Venue negotiations, agreements, planning, sponsorship solicitation, event executions, announcing, post event reports.

Gravity East Series New Management Announcement for 2015

New for 2015 is the support and integration of the Mid-Atlantic Cup (MAC) Dual Slalom races. One of the races in this series will combine with GES finals to give riders an opportunity to race dual disciplines on the same weekend. The dual slalom format is something Coleman and Hartlove have heard racers ask for in high demand. They are answering accordingly and are dedicated to growing the dual slalom genre along with the downhill race series.

Mike has also brought his long-standing relationship with Wisp Resort to the table for GES in 2015. Through Wisp, the Gravity East will leverage Monster Energy as a major GES sponsor. Monster will be providing product, clothing, and other give-a-away / prizes for podiums and raffle winners. When asked for specifics, Hartlove replied that Monster was able to provide a complete bike, boom box, hoodies, and “cases and cases” of product to an event he threw in 2014. With this as the precedent, he expects Monster / Wisp to step up big for 2015 considering the number of race participants GES will be bringing.

“The relationship with Wisp has huge potential for the GES. We have a contract with Wisp to grow their MTB park. The possibities are infinite,” says Hartlove. “We are on the ground floor for developing this mountain to become an MTB destination. Wisp has made their heavy equipment available at our disposal and also given us the most latitude in terms of what we want to build, link up, create, you name it. And they are big supporters of the dual slalom format.”

With Racer’s Edge being a long-time sponsored GT team, Mike is also bringing GT Bikes to the table. “The goal is to solidify a deal to give away a complete bike at GES finals this year,” says Hartlove. “We’ve also set a goal to have the cash and prize pool double in 2016. Fox Racing Shox has stepped up and given us multiple dual and single crown forks to give away this year too. We’re growing this series and making it the best we can possibly make it for the riders, the fans, the sponsors and the families. It’s all about putting on the best possible event, growing the sport, and providing as much value as we can for our sponsors, and especially our racers”

Also back for 2015 is the branding, PR, web and social media firm Vitamin, who has helped raise brand awarness for the GES since originally redesigning the series web site in 2013. For 2015, Vitamin will again be a presenting sponsor providing media relations, an updated look/feel for the web site and web updates throughout the season. “We couldn’t be happier to see two proven guys like Mike and Steve at the helm of the GES,” said Vitamin COO Michael Karfakis. “These guys have the track record and the passion to make thier vision for the GES come to life. We’re looking forward to being a part of it all.”

About Mike Hartlove
In 2000, Mike formed The Racer’s Edge, a mid-Atlantic BMX race team. Over the years, the team would flourish and grow to be one of the top Pro teams in the country with sponsored riders Lars Tribus, Todd Bosch, Holly Kuhn, Derrick Nobman and Kevin Liebig. In 2002, Mike founded the Mid-Atlantic Cup Downhill Series and started building tracks at local venues in the mid-Atlantic. By 2005, Mike was recognized a top promoter and builder.

About Steve Coleman
Steve formed Gravity Soul, LLC. in 2010 to promote and facilitate riding of all types with an emphasis on gravity disciplines. The name “Gravity Soul” represents the feeling or momentary perfection achieved when riding passionately, almost effortlessly, over an entire run or section of trail. In 2011, Gravity Soul built its initial dual slalom track. Steve purchased and operated timing equipment, and started holding events in 2012.

 No mountain creek bike park?
  • 1 2
I agree Jon. From what I am told, the GES wouldn't mind being at the May 31st race but they need an OK from those involved.....can you work any magic here?

oh where oh where is my little snowshoe..oh where oh where could it beeeeee?
  • 7 1
Nice! Glad to see Massanutten and Wisp back in the GES! Might even be possible for me to do the whole series this year...
  • 2 0
Yeah. There is a nice long break in there for park weekends, enduros, other races.....kinds nice.
  • 5 1
Long break? You mean the entire summer? I literally won't be able to do any of the races because they're all happening while I'm away at college...
  • 3 0
@gingcal - Yeah, that does stink. It's nice for us guys with full-time jobs and families but that doesn't help guys like you at all.
  • 3 1
I'm not really sure how it would help those with full time jobs and families either... Wouldn't it be easier to travel to races during the summer for everyone, families included? All races are on weekends. Not sure I understand what you're getting at, but I'll see everyone at the slalom race in June, haha.
  • 2 0
@gingcal - The more space between these things is sometimes better for guys with no time and many people to manage. More time to rest and plan. We're old, yo. Heh. I'm not saying I prefer a two month gap by any means though.
  • 2 0
I think he's talking about spreading the cost over more paychecks, & not having to get kitchen passes every weekend in the summer. Razz

The GES is under "new management" (again) as in the series was sold? Or are just two new race directors under the same ole owner of the GES? From what I understand, thought the GES was Downhill only type of race event series? Looks like the series is trying to branch out a little bit more. This was one of the first gravity racing series I did a few years ago; the series had a lot more races then and than now. Maybe with this new management style, this series might become a full East Coast series. You two have a lot of work to do, wish you both the best of luck. See you at the races.
  • 3 1
From what I have taken from the situation, it is the same ownership just new directors. It is a shame that there is a lot less, but the ESC has a lot on lockdown. I would consider that slalom is also gravity racing, wouldnt you? The new directors definitely saved the series, so I am thankful.
  • 3 0
Good, two people taking charge of the series, see what may come about it then, those two have a lot of work a head of them to restore the image of the GES. Hope that can make it work for them, best of luck to them too. Yes, slalom, enduro, super-d and dh are all part of the gravity racing events with each discipline so more people can be part of the gravity seen.

No northeast? Where's NY, VT and NH on that schedule? Looks pretty skinny without some of our hills on there. And only 5 events? I hate to be a hater but how can I afford to race any of these? More like gravity midatlantic series. Disappointed.
  • 4 1
@l-catterton - Geographic focus is plainly stated in the release. Read it.
  • 4 3
We can all read.....it is still kind of shitty that our "east coast series" is only in two states. A lot of racers wont want to travel that much. Cant see how this will grow the sport. Also disappointed.
  • 2 0
This should be addressed to the "owner" of the GES.
  • 4 2
If you want to race the Northeast, ESC has you covered, Gravity East series is stepping up to help the people of the "South". Great job Gravity East, I look forward to supporting you fully this upcoming season.
  • 4 0
DS, huh? I'm super jelly east coasters... hopefully the desire in my local community for some DS will bear fruit in the future, but right now, we got nuffin.
  • 2 0
Awesome! except that the 2 races closest to me "conflict"with my wedding on Sept 19th. Wisp is unfortunately out....now i just have to convince the fiance that i'm not going to break my body during the springs race.....................
  • 6 0
I went to Highland the day before my wedding last year. Just tell her its wedding stress relief!
  • 2 0
HAHA...that sounds like a pretty solid plan....however I already had to do a lot of convincing to get her to let me race the Chomo Challenge so close to the wedding date....hopefully I can go 2 for 2!
  • 2 0
Look at it this way, you can change a wedding date but you cannot change the date of a race.
  • 6 0
 No Snowshoe?
  • 4 1
I wonder what the deal is. Snowshoe is the biggest downhill spot in the region.
  • 3 0
More and likely the deal might be is, that Snowshoe ad the other resorts, know that they can do everything "in house" to make money for the resort.
  • 3 1
@spokeapparel I like it! Gives us a lot of races closer to home! All the ESC races are 10+ hours from Detroit Area, the GES races are on average 6-8 hours. We'll be at a few for sure.
  • 2 0
@kickstand1 Detroit! You guys are ride-or-die! Can't wait to see you at the races.... : )
  • 1 0
@spokeapparel Mike, we should be at Massanutten.
  • 1 1
Hopefully this is a rebuilding year for the GES. If the GES and Eastern States Cup had partnered in some fashion it probably would have helped. I am guessing that the gap in the Summer is due to scheduling conflicts and not intentional.
  • 2 0
I would love to see Timberline, WV become a destination in a DH race series... hopefully it will happen in the not-too-distant future.
  • 2 0
Sucks that one of the dual slalom series falls on the same weekend as the east coast bmx nationals..also in md. Hmmm.. decisions
  • 3 0
Finally some DS making its way back in the racing scene. Problem now is I am old , fat and slow.
  • 2 4
I can read quite well @spokeapparel. Its what I'm reading that sucks. Should rename that series to represent what's really going down. How big are these hills anyway? Shit looked pretty flat last time I was down that way.
  • 2 3
In other words this is not representing the east coast. Just your local pinch of it.
  • 4 0
Correct, Neither the GES or ESC represent the East Coast completely. Just pick the races you want to do, don't worry about following a series, and enjoy the races and events that you sign up for. See you at the races and events.
  • 4 0
@russell 's got it. these race series are a major time and energy suck to produce. no one makes money, literally. if you're lucky, you walk away with a tiny something, but it doesn't justify the time or headache. Mike and Steve rescued the GES. Literally. It was going to fade into nothing. They are doing what they can and they toyed with re-branding it to Mid Atlantic Cup to better represent the area. They stuck with the GES brand for two reasons: 1. Mike helped start it and wanted to save it 2. The brand's tenure makes courting sponsors a bit easier. It is what it is. If you can make races, awesome. If you can't, bummer, but it's better than the series dying. In terms of the number of races and the long gap in the middle of summer....again, they did what they could. A lot of it was last minute. They have plans to improve and grow. This is year one, and it's very much a rebuilding year.
  • 1 0
Good reply back, I understand what you are saying, and hope it works out for the best for those two.
  • 2 0
Either way its rad to see some DS in this country.
  • 2 0
Yea.. Along with Jon I would like to be able to shred on my home turf
  • 2 0
Where is the love for southeast??
  • 1 0
Hopefully all the resorts and other dh places in the area; Snowshoe, Beech, Bryce, Wisp, Windrock, TTC, Bikefarm and maybe the PNF, will work together to produce a South Series. Most of those places have realized that bringing a "series" takes money away from them and if the series comes to those places, entry fees might have to go up so both businesses make money.
  • 2 1
Great job GES, I will be at each one of these and look forward to a shorter drive from NC than most of the ESC races...
  • 2 0
 Goatlove
  • 1 0
@tractionmag what's up buddy!? thanks for the comment : )
  • 1 2
Nice races that are actually some what close to me. Would be cool to have in the future a "legal" dh race in frederick!
  • 1 0
