Greg Minnaar Sustains Suspected AC Separation in Snowshoe World Cup Qualification Run [Updated with Video]

There's a bit of discussion of Minnaar's injury right at the end.

Could the rainbow stripes really be cursed?

In his qualifying run today, Greg Minnaar hit a root, he said, that sent him into a losing battle with a tree.


Minnaar shared a video on Instagram of his team physio Laura Robson examining his injured shoulder and declaring it a separated AC joint, likely grade II or III, recognizable by the injury's signature step-down shape at the end of the collarbone.

Robson described the incident as Minnaar having 'concertinaed into a tree' but said he doesn't appear to have a head injury. The incident happened near the top of the course and he did not finish the run.

Gutted is an understatement, but stoked for @luca_shaw laying down a solid run.

 @james182: Glad for you, my frame, fork and rims were damaged during the accident. Went to a shop for inspection the repair quote was $8000, the proposition from ICBC is ridiculous and they cover basically nothing for the medical part just $83. So now I have a destroyed bike and my hand is in pain.

 @skiandmtbdirtbag: If it is a 2nd or 3rd degree AC separation no surgery likely. I actually separated mine in Whistler and the clinic doc told me he would not recommend unless it is 4th or 5th. Too much risk of lung infection with surgery in that area. Rehab and strength training.

 @CustardCountry: iirc, really low income people have coverage through Medicaid. I think it can be hard to access and I can’t speak to its quality. The people who are really screwed are working people without employer provided insurance. Buddy of mine pays $1400 a month for family of four in WA state. There’s really no other choice.

 @Vlad-Putin: this is true and what I pay. And it’s not even that simple. You have to go to specific hospitals and a bunch of other conditions thrown in to make your life a living hell. And while you recover you will spend the next 2 years keeping track of bills from disparate sources none of which communicate with each other. The patient becomes the middleman between all these companies. It’s a fking soul sucking nightmare the us healthcare system

 @CustardCountry: Geez us, there is healthcare for poor people. It called MediCal in California. There are plenty of affordable healthcare options under CoveredCalifornia plans. Or just get a job, most employers offer healthcare these days unless you're moving lawns, or a deadbeat loser drug addict. Every hospital emergency room in the country has to see you by law. If you're poor they're not going to bill you because they know you have no money. It does get complicated if you're hospitalized for serious illness of course, but no country is perfect. In 48 years, I have received excellent healthcare, even when I had not much money or no healthcare. Stop shitting on America for sport, especially being from your less than perfect country!

 @dirktanzarian: Yeah mainly ICBC but I have been waiting for more than a month to see a specialist for my hand, i understand with covid etc. I still don't know what is going on. The doctors don't care. I cant properly ride my bike and it is painful to change gears on my car, so now i do first to fourth gear. Plus even if I am a victim I will have to pay tons of extra. I am gonna contact doctors in France to see if it is faster.

For mountain biking the best country to crash in is France, they call the helicopter and you don't have to pay ( our taxes pay lol ). You see helicopters almost every day in the PDS. I nicely opened my knee in Les Gets and 30 min after the crash went to a walking clinic and right away they sew my knee. 2 weeks after i was riding again. The nurses + doctor were covered by the government and had another insurance for France/Switzerland (10 euros per month). Canada is not bad but even before Covid good luck to have an appointment with a specialist, i will not even speak about the mental health problems in Vancouver.

I had a 3rd - and after all the rehab and strength training I had no limitations on the movement and the reach, but did not have enough strength - so had to go ahead with the surgery and through rehab and strength training again in order to restore strength.
It is very personal - hope for Greg he can do without.

 @Ba1rog: Seems like your issue is with ICBC, that’s the auto insurance of BC, unfortunately very different than the medical system, icbc goes through lawyers, litigation, and tribunals, before payouts are made. How was your experience at the hospital, that’s the medical system

 @p0rtal00: if you’re self employed, yes that’s what it costs to buy private family insurance. If you work for a good company health insurance is usually included, but you still could end up paying a lot when you get into an accident, depending on the plan.

 The normal Snowshoe trails are incredibly/deceptively fast. Can only imagine what they did with the cup trail. Saw some of the trail building a month ago. Once I found out the nearest hospital is an hour away, I tried not to go full send.

 Just watching the video, I would imagine he would be in substantial pain if it was a stage 3. I had a stage 3 separation end of 2019, and the gap in my AC was about an inch, as well as some substantial swelling and bruising. I don't bruise easily either. I'm not saying it's not, but judging from what I'm seeing I highly doubt it. From.the sounds of things, he seems like he's contemplating if he's going to race tomorrow. If that was a stage 3, there would be no question that he's out for the season indeed. Here's to hoping it's really not, and the Goat can have a crack at the overall!!! What a story that would be.

 @jomacba: @jomacba: Even if it's a grade 2 he is not racing tomorrow. Grade two means atleast one of the ligaments has torn completely. If there is a visual deformity it is atleast a grade two. Which is very painful.

 @jomacba: Yup grade 3 sucks balls. Grade one means ligaments are strained. grade 2 means one of the 3 ligaments in the AC joint is completely torn, 3 is all three ligaments. Greg probably was just sucking wind with some good IM anti inflammatories onboard.

 Just watched practice and he did a couple of slow passes through the section he crashed on. I talked to Lyle and he's not 100% sure he'll race, but he's trying.

Also watched Cathro have a good one entering the same section. He tried a different entry into the woods than most riders were taking and the dirt didn't hold, sending him OTB into the woods. Fortunately, he was able to get up and continue.

 Kinda? I was in middle school playing tackle football with the older neighborhood kids. I was bigger than all of them though, so it was 3 of them vs me and one little kid. I was running with the ball, one of the kids grabbed my arm to try and tackle me, spun me all the way around and I ran through/over a small tree. He let go because he thought I was probably hurt, but I just kept running for the TD!

Tree was maybe 6' tall, 1.5" diameter lol, bent easy. But still a win in my 6th grade book!

 My head fell off a couple of years ago. That smarted

 3 AC separations. All stage 3. right shoulder twice (2000 and 2007), had surgery the 2nd time. Left shoulder most recently 2 years ago; and wish I had surgery; but snowmobile season was coming so I went for the quicker recovery of 3 months without surgery vs 6 months with surgery. Doc told me if I came back years later and wanted the surgery; it would be the same procedure and same recovery time: 6 months. Would strongly recommend immediate surgery for stage 3. Figure I'll crash hard again eventually and get my shoulder fixed during my next surgery.

 I had a paper cut once. Really hut. 4 shoulder separations, only grade 1,2. Broke scapula into 3, top rib and 3 other ribs last year, now that one really hurt.

 I had a grade 4 separation and the surgeon wanted to leave it be and not operate. Couldn't work or ride for 3 months but after a year it was pretty good. Wishing Minnaar a quick recovery and hope this injury isn't a career finisher.

 @skiandmtbdirtbag: Hook plate? Oh my god I feel sorry for you. Very old-fashioned method. Rockwood V for me and I´m 8 weeks after tight ropes and wait for the AC wire to be removed tomorrow. Hopefully back on the bike in 6 weeks!

Not the frequency of injury, I only did one shoulder - but couldn't find a doctor, so after 8 weeks decided it didn't make a difference I can opt to do it later. Fresh injuries heal better, with Grade 3. Looking forward to the crash that lets me go under the knife - hopefully it's in the fall.

 I had a terrible ac separation s year and a half ago. Never been the same. Good luck Greg.

 If you're gonna ride MTB's pretty much say goodbye to your AC joints. However Greg's injury isn't something that an Ortho surgeon would fix, it will heal fine on it's own.
