We all know that the pro riders are way faster than us mere mortals, but this new telemetry overlay feature from GoPro could give us all some really interesting insights to what speeds pro athletes do on trails that we ride, or would like to. Gwin hits top speeds of ~34mph in this video—how close do you think you can get to that?

Markus Stockl hit 167 km/hr. Just sayin...
  • + 33
Stockl hit 167 kph. Gwin punched 34 mph square in the face.
  • - 1
Stockl only went in a straight line in the dry. Just sayin'...

Is 34mph fast all of a sudden?

Id give him the 35.... it blipped it....

Um, not very close.

smooth and relatively straight . not exactly world cup worthy terrain
  • + 12
The fastest i've gone is 38mph on a fire road on a hard tail! talk about fun!
  • + 94
@MountianBikerJoe: Gwin made a big mistake showing me his lines. Now I know what to do.

@russthedog: remember he didn't have a chain on. so there's that..
  • + 4
I am not capable of riding that trail without falling
  • + 8
@driftmonster: Come back and comment after you've ridden that trail. It's not flat or smooth, as any number of UCI DH racers that have ridden it would attest I'm sure.
  • + 2
@MountianBikerJoe: right on! broke 40 once near the bottom of a resort (grand targhee) on the cat track. it straightens out near the bottom but still hard pack and gravel. the most scared i've ever been in my life. in that moment (summer 2000) i understood why disc brakes, body armor, and big rubber were a good idea. never again.

sweet vid! nice gap at the bottom!

www.strava.com/activities/52169444 I hit 64.8 km/hr on one of my old trails in Penticton BC. yes, its' an actual trail with jumps and everything!

lame you have to log in to strava though haha. i'll try screen shot and upload to pinkbike.
  • + 1
 @driftmonster: where do you ride?
  • + 7
@driftmonster: I'm sure you can beat him on strava. I have faith in you, go up to that trail and give it a try! It's located on off Ortega highway 74 in lake elsinore. Can't miss it.

Attn moron gwin fan boys . Never said I was faster only that the track didn't look to bad . #2017yearOfThebaculum
  • + 9
@driftmonster: Name calling, what are you twelve? Lol Gwin's a pretty cool dude if you know him. And guilty as charged, I am a fan I've met him on my local trails. I doubt you've even been to that trail in the vid. Know the terrain before you make a comment about a place you've never been. Gopros tend to flatten out trails making steep and tech look like a cake walk.
  • + 1
I'd get pretty close. Coast down the hill with no brakes. Yeah, I'd get pretty close. Maybe even more since I run high tire pressures.
  • + 1
@driftmonster: Ever ride Whiteface? It is bigger and faster (with gnar) than most places I have been to, on the east.
  • + 0
Confident I could get one of those numbers
  • + 1
If gwins using it to train / dial bikes then it's definitely a legitimate track regardless of what the go pro says.
  • + 3
@monstertiki: hey how's it compare tech wise to fontucky? I've ridden everything highland has to offer and will say if this trail has the tech and steepness Fontana has on some of their courses @driftmonster needs to shut his dirty whore mouth. East coast ain't the only place with steep and technical gnar.
  • + 2
@scotttherider: Fontana really isn't a true downhill, it has gnarly tech lines yes and some pretty good ones, especially the shoot at the end that they normally do for nationals. But it doesn't have the sustained steepness and speed of a true dh course. This place, known as the "sam hill trail" (it has several names), has most of the tech is up top. It's one of the steeper trails socal has to offer, lots of people ride it just not anywhere near gwins speed on it.

 @driftmonster:

"douche pickle" now added to my inventory of insults.

gracias!
  • + 3
@driftmonster: you do know world cup tracks look easy from a go-pro right? Anyone who has ridden this trail knows it's anything but smooth and straight -- including a bunch of WC pros.
  • + 0
@driftmonster: why in the hell do you care about what anyone thinks anyway. Do you know these people that are down voting you? Fuhcking whiny babies. I really don't know what the purpose of the up/down vote is. Damn I have woken up on the wrong side of the bed!
  • + 1
I'm not quite sure if these down votes really work? I'm getting downvoted for what I'm saying. Doesn't make sense.
  • + 1
@WasatchEnduro: ^^ this. Been looking for something to replace "tea bag"
  • - 2
@leftCoastBurn: I've ridden WC tracks . That def isn't one

that trail be like.... Sand, sand, some dirt... BAM FUCKING ROCK GARDEN.. sand, sand... dirt... repeat.
  • + 4
Yeah it's impressive how fast he is going for how rough and eroded that trail looks...
  • + 1
It's weird seeing him ride in sand when in the east all I ever rode was pure dirt, roots, and rocks
  • + 24
I counted no less than 179 places where I would have crashed and he makes it look smooth as butter, while pulling more than 1g in the corners. That was impressive and depressing all at the same time.
  • + 14
I mean I could probably almost go that fast but I would eat shit on the first turn
  • + 23
I could go that fast, but I would be cartwheeling down the mountain unconscious.
  • + 13
34mph on the easiest part of the trail is not the impressive part its his cornering speed
  • + 15
 With or without chain? )
  • + 14
 What is MPH?
  • + 24
 1.609 x faster than km/h.

  • + 10
@ricechrispy: Maybe you'd have been there more quickly with metric? Wink
  • + 23
Yeah yeah yeah. Metric is clearly superior. The good news is that the US is moving to metric soon. At least that's what I remember my kindergarten teacher telling me.
  • + 2
@R-trailking-S: I grew up near JPL, and for career day in High School one of the engineers who worked on that project was speaking to us. Someone asked him about that, and he got all flustered and blamed it on "a lack of funding"

I thought that was called the Sam Hill trail since according to rumors ive heard he built that trail with his coach a long time ago.
  • + 9
I'm so much faster and ahead of Gwin I don't even show up in the vid, true story bro
  • + 3
 Sounds legit.
  • + 3
Thats 55km/h. Doesn't sound like much but friends with motorbikes don't really get it. In may cases a moto would be slower than an MTB - especially where the track is tight and twisty. I love the vid of GA beating a KTM Enduro bike down Fort William.

41.4mph at Trestle downhill (On a YT Tues as a matter of fact). www.strava.com/activities/659082510

But, there is no way in hell I could keep up with him in those turns. Wow!

I hit 86 km/h near the top of Whistler from the lodge, going down the open ski hill, to get to the trails.. skipping around over the fist-sized loose rocks was sketchy!
  • + 5
that's only 53mph... you Canadians and your fancy metric units are no match for the might of the imperial mile!!!
  • + 22
back in '82 i used to be able to throw a pigskin a quarter mile

I hit 70mph down peak 7 at Breckenridge one gaper day, riding some 210's I found at the recycling center in Dillon.
  • + 1
@kjjohnson: I think i saw you when I beelined Birds of Prey in Beaver Creek, pulled a hard right and used Golden Peak in Vail as a kicker. Peak 7 was my landing!

i hit a peak of 38mph on my last strava xc ride but my mtb terrain was nothing like this...my dh go pro footage looks way way slower than this.

Well... I'm very fast on a trail in my backyard, also with my hardtail... But in some unknown trails with 3 o 4 practice runs i'm veeeery slow.

Only in socal! We have plenty of trees up here in northern area

California is also home to the world's largest and tallest trees. See Sequoia and Redwoods.
  • - 2
@Circe: Sequoia Giganteum, and Sequoia Sempervirens actually they are both Sequoias... just a heads up..
  • + 15
@oneplanka: Yes, they're related. Same genus but different species.

Isn't Pinkbike fun?
  • + 9
@oneplanka: guess you know your wood with that username.

@Circe: I didn't bring it to your attention to be a wanker.. just a friendly factoid. I come from a wildlife/fish biology background.

@nickkk: ha ha I can dig it. My user name refers to the wood cored plank I schralp around on during the winter snowy times..
  • + 2
@Jack-McLovin:if it aint got trees im not interested
  • + 0
uh maybe SoCal but here in Norcal we have a shit ton of trees
  • + 5
@oneplanka @Circe Giant Sequoias, known for including the General Sherman, the world's most massive tree, is Sequoiadendron Gigantem. Coastal Redwoods, known for including the world's tallest tree, is Sequoia Sempervirens. Not only are they a different species, but they are also a different genus. Gigantem is the only living species of the Sequoiadendron genus. Giant Sequoias and Coast Redwoods are related at the subfamily level, Sequoioideae.
  • + 3
@SoCal-AM: you really need to get out more
  • + 1
@oneplanka: The latin binomial for Giant Sequoia is Sequoiadendron giganteum.

  • + 2
@endlessblockades: Haha copy/paste not needed! And I love to get out, hence my love for the trees!
