Spotted: RockShox's New Enduro Fork

Apr 8, 2020
by Mike Levy

Fox isn't the only suspension brand taking the bigger-is-better approach to single-crown forks. There's been a lot of mumbles over the last few months about a new option from RockShox with huge stanchion tubes, something that might remind us of the Totem but using their latest tech, to compete with Fox's new 38.

RockShox used Mitch Ropelato's Instagram to give the public their first look at the new fork today, and Pinkbike member mitch160 grabbed the screenshots below of it on the front of Florian Nicolai's Trek Slash.

We don't know any official details yet, including the diameter of its upper tubes, but I'm going to guess that they're 38.99mm. One thing we do know, however, is that it won't be called a Totem.

"One thing we do know, however, is that it won't be called a Totem."

Either you're wrong or RS missed the mark. No offence, I hope you're wrong!
  • 43 1
When I seen the release I was like please be the totem ... I'm disappointed lol
  • 164 1
The stanchion graphics on the totem were so cool. They looked like a shitty tribal tattoo, but I love it.
  • 24 1
Yea I agree recently tried to find a tapered totem but most of them seem to be straight 1.5 which sucks the fork is legendary
  • 53 4
If its not a totem, I'm not interested. I don't understand why they wouldn't, they revived the pike name.
  • 12 1
I'm just glad they've put threads on the arch like the new SIDs so I don't need to zip tie a mud guard to them.
  • 218 1
Don't underestimate the power of the PB comment section. If we want it to be the new Totem, it'll be the new Totem.
  • 16 6
Pretty sure they are calling the the Zeb. Or that's the thought over on Vital.
  • 43 1
Marzo will soon release 66 in 38 chassis, so not calling this Totem will be a total fail.
Freeride is back baby! Now I am only waiting for some retro 90s inspired clothing.Wink

@topherdagopher: I could be wrong, but I thought they were meant to look like a totem pole.

I think that “one thing they know for sure” bit was intended to provoke us. They are spy shots. How could PB possibly know what the name of the fork is? Unless...

@inked-up-metalhead: AFAIK, they did not "revive" the Pike, since it has not left the catalog since its debuts.
  • 6 0
@cool3: You must not have been around for the original Pike. A contemporary of the Psylo.
  • 1 2
@knarrr: Oh, yes, sorry. I had the older Pike too, but there was no gap between the old one and the new(er) one, as far as I remember...
  • 3 0
@knarrr: BTW, the Psylo (I had one) was out in the early 2000s. I think that the Pike came quite a few years after that, around 2005...
  • 4 1
@knarrr: When I started mountain biking, there was no such thing as a suspension fork... so I was around, yes. Wink

@itssadbutdrew: No rebound control but lots o travel....

The totem was meant for freeride. This is something else. A new lyrik I bet and then reclass the pike label to take care of all the 35mm forks.
  • 1 0
@curendero: yeah thats more accurate than the totem
  • 7 0
@commental: My guess is this. Zebulon Pike is the man Pikes Peak is named after. Pikes Peak is a well know 14,000ft mountain right in RockShox’s backyard in Colorado Springs. I believe this is also how the Pike fork got its name

Totem would be a tone-deaf marketing move given indigenous rights and issues esp in Canada. They are pretty solid over there on the comms side so I'm assuming they are letting the old totem go.

Next best thing to Totem is the Beaver Enduro. Someone with his ears close to the action let the name slip.
  • 7 0
I will be called the trout, as it says in the instagram post. They have the pike already so it only makes sense to continue naming forks with fish names.
  • 2 2
@makripper: Something is already happening. Rock Shox site shows a new fork called.... 35. So it is possible the new bigger one will take over the Lyrik name and everything else will go under 35, Pike Yari, whatever nomenclature.
  • 12 5
@dsphotography: yeah mate, you can’t pay homage to a cool thing that everyone knows and loves (the totem pole) because you know, it’s racist. And stuff.

Have you heard that the term “Mountain biking” is going to be phased out because like, Sherpas have been walking in mountains since antiquity, therefore it’s racist to use the word “mountain”. It offends Sherpas. Or something.

There is nothing insensitive or racist in using the name “Totem” for a fork. It’s a compliment to totem poles if anything.

@jaame: Totem \TOH-tum\ noun. 1 a : an object (such as a bicycle suspension fork) serving as the emblem of a family or clan (mountain bikers) and often as a reminder of its ancestry (40mm single crown since 2006).

@takeiteasyridehard: the 2 that are together are beat to shit with scratched stantchions not really something ideal, the other one which I didn't see at first is alright but I'm not paying 600 bucks plus shipping and shit for a old fork I can get a new lyrik for the same price
  • 2 1
 @chriskneeland: hellz yeah!
  • 1 0
@cyberoptixs: I believe they existed before tapered steerer tubes were invented. Yea Im old LOL! 1.5 sounds about right for the era for big single crown forks.
  • 1 0
@Diesel2007: Im pretty sure they did have a tapered head tube version. they also had the straight 1.5 version as well as 1 1/8th.

@makripper: I had a 2011 Tapered Dual Position Air, 150/180. 203mm disc mount, Mission Control DH damper. 20mm Maxle Lite. Absolute beast of a fork. Bottomed it about twice in the whole time I had it. That DPA was shite. I wish I got coil.

  • 1 0
@cyberoptixs: the white and red one with the Avy cartridge has seen better days, yeah. The grey one is clear coated bare magnesium with not a scratch anywhere. The white and green one is in even better shape than the grey one, so I’m confused as to what you’re looking at lol.

  • 1 0
@takeiteasyridehard: that one is already spoken for, and I didn’t want to sell it at that! Lol. But I’ll hit you up if the guy decides to back out.
  • 1 0
I kept mine for many years after I sold the rest of the bike it was on. I was planning to put it on a 275 but the steerer was too short for the new frame because I slammed it on the first bike it was on (what a tit).

"its ok to have a 35 pound bike again"

Pretty crazy how that is now true again. I used to ride a 38lb Santa Cruz Bullet around town all the time and think nothing of it's weight on "urban rides" where we would jump our mtbs off stairs or anything we found in town. That was the 2000's. The last 10+ years has been a huge shift to light weight being everything.

Time to over correct I think.
  • 3 0
 @warmerdamj:

I don’t know man, I think how / where you ride and how you outfit your bike is going to determine its weight. My Carbon sight weighed as much as 35lbs last year with DD tires, oneup edc pump and tool kit, and a spare tube. There’s only 2 places I ride that requires that kit, the other 5+ places an xc setup would be fine. That 35lbs bike is currently weighing 28.75lbs without pedals and no bottle cage or edc kit.. it’s on Rekon’s and I have it stripped down and setup for our local beer league marathon xc races that are now cancelled.
  • 3 0
@hamncheez: I've been part of the build crews organizing groups to fix Levitate in Corner Canyon and I can't tell you how many people I get talking down my throat about how to build takeoffs and landings. Usually it's the people who are afraid of anything wider than a 2 foot trail.
  • 2 0
@warmerdamj: True, but the last 10 years were nothing like the early days of MTB with Ritchey p-21's, Ringlè lightweight skewers, 1.75" tires and Answer Hyperlite flat bars. I do not miss those bikes of yesteryear.

But with Covid around they wanted something that would send good vibes across the mtb world nad let people know that the forks will not be a vector for the virus. They've been decontaminated at various points of the production process. Alchohol, bleach & a final UV ray treatment

People with small forks always say size does not matter, but, the trails know the truth. During isolation both Fox and SRAM engineers has been popping counterfeit Viagra pills. The result is a 35 mm SID, Fox 38 and the Rock Shox TROUSER TROUT (that is the actual name -I have it from a good source). SRAM got caught with their trousers down and now are trying to get this thing to market. At least it was not Shimano that beat them to the punch!

Is it just me or can they release a new shock with High speed compression and rebound first?? Like in terms of rear shock game they're pretty behind compared to their competition.
  • 8 1
The thing about lots of shock adjustment is that unless you know exactly what you are doing and spend alot of time setting up the shock your just more likely to have more settings in the wrong place, making the shock feel bad. The average mountain biker does not need HSC/HSR.

Since Pinkbike stated the classic "we don't know any official details yet" it will most likely be released with a full few months of testing tomorrow.
  • 3 0
Not sure about the Ultimate, but I was looking for a new fork before all of this COVID mess, and the distributor I was working with told me that the Lyrik Select and Select+ were discontinued. I haven't confirmed his statement, but I wouldn't be surprised if things are being phased out right now.

I'm curious if the current Lyrik will exist after this comes out (like the 36 exists beside the 3Cool , or if it will be entirely removed.

  • 2 0
!!!DANG IT!!!!! Not good enough! "The People" need a fork with stanchions at least twice the the girth of the downtube. That would allow us into finally utilize that boost axle sizing appropriately and maybe throw in some 105mm inner diameter 29++ (yes two pluses) inch treads.
  • 2 0
Totem For Life! There would be nothing wrong with RS resurrecting the Totem name for its own lineup! We could have Totems for all, and the all would become "believers" in the product behind the name! Totems for Enduro, FR, 27.5, 29 and whatever else!
  • 2 0
2200g 38mm singlecrown forks are so dumb. 35mm dual crown gives you more longitudinal rigidity and less stiction with not a massive weight penalty.

just put dual crowns on enduro bikes already. crown count is a meaningless differentiator b/w Enduro & DH.

On the 38 article someone posted a link to sram site TOTEM page, which showed 0 products, but it was called the TOTEM!
  • 5 0
@CascadeComponents: Good spotting Big Grin I think in light of the current situation, the entire industry should just consolidate into one massive company. On the positive side, back catalog now fully available - www.sram.com/en/rockshox/products/forks?filters=series|Marzocchi%204X%20RC3%20Air%20Fork%202011&sort=Relevancy&page=1

@pauluswebster: Not the best name for a new fork, IDK what Rockshox is thinking! Wink

The rockshox super awesome deluxe plus fantastic awesome wonderful fork The rockshox wow fab deluxe great superb great shock Someone needs to be fired
  • 4 0
I'll switch back to RS if the Totem is reborn. I still have the decals that came with the fork.
  • 1 0
I want to buy the fork in 29er and throw the old Totem stickers on it. Knowing me I'll just go buy a Lyrik Ultimate at half the price.
  • 1 0
 @Ajorda: that would be awesome!
  • 5 0
Much better looking than fox’s new offerings
  • 3 0
Totem or not, we are now waiting for Fox - Marzocchi 66. 2007 is back, we have 1 by drivetrains, big single crown forks - maybe we will see NWD ressurection Big Grin
  • 3 0
 Lyrik BTF (Better than Fox)

I was hoping for the Totem till i read this last sentence and now i hope their Marketing department knows what they do. Big Grin
  • 5 0
Just call it a Totem so they can be fitted to a Pole. #totempole
  • 2 0
As a subliminal note, please know that the phonetics for "Toulouse" is utterly similar to... "To Loose".

So well, I guess "To Loose is Better" as the saying goes at Trek.

Sometimes the push for fork stiffness goes in directions that I question the strength to weight value equation.
For less than pure DH use the concept of a double crown 35/36 with 20mm double clamp axle would provide a lightweight stiff assembly with flex in the right places and better air spring performance. I think that MOJO's idea will remain an ideal alternative to this new effort to up the diameter and crown beefiness of single crown forks. Maybe this all wouldn't be necessary had we stayed with the 20mm/clamp on axle?
  • 1 0
It wouldn´t completely but it would be a good start. The bigger issue with fox for past x years was the other side of the fork though, cannot expect much stiffness with bad crown design assembled using wrong technique no matter what axle you use.
  • 2 0
@Mondbiker: I just think if steering precision and safety at long travels and slack HTA, you cannot duplicate the advantages of a DC design in a larger stanchion SC design. The decision is more marketing than performance based.
  • 1 0
@chasejj: Absolutely, market just isn´t ready yet and everybody seems to think that 20mm axle would save the day. It wouldn´t, there is a good way to make 15mm axle and bad way of making 20mm one and trust me, they would find a way of making bad 20mm axle. Look at difference between boxxer and 40. Do DH riders need to remove front wheel all that often? If not why in world you don´t put at least single bloody pinch bolt on each side?
  • 1 0
@Mondbiker: Im hanging into my 2017 Factory 36 with 20mm - 4 bolt clamp until something better comes along that speaks to my needs. Bartlett is looking better to me.

@jaydawg69: all the pb staff are sick of it
  • 4 3
 @jaydawg69: The truth hurts.
  • 3 0
Psylo? Maybe they're going to revive that name and save Totem for when the 1.8" steerer standard arrives ; )
  • 4 1
And bring back U-turn (tool-free adjustable travel) - 120mm on climbs and 160mm on descends Big Grin
  • 1 0
@Citrons: Aside from the fact that the short setting was always super easy to bottom out, I thought U turn was great.
  • 2 0
@Citrons: U-turn coil was great, It would be nice for getting a longer fork when you need it rather than shortening the fork on modern low bb bikes. I miss that feature from my old old lyrik.
  • 5 1
Has anyone at RS noticed Boxxer has 35 mm stanchions?
  • 1 0
 True True!
  • 3 1
Double crown design gives lots of stiffness, many more factors than just the diamater of the tube. Lots of fork flex comes from the crown. Plus lowers can be stiffer with less material removed as weight is less of a concern.
  • 5 1
whatever the name , it had better have a 20mm axle
  • 1 0
I was going to say Psylo as well ( just saw above somebody already remembered that one) ...that fork had a lot of promise and looked so cool when it first came out...didn't really hold up that well however.
  • 3 0
At least RockShox stuck to the more square arch. I'm not a fan of the Round arch Fox 38 Circa Pike 2012.
  • 1 0
A GMBN video on YouTube took a look at Iago Garay Santacruz Megatower, it was pointed out that there was no travel marking on the stanchions. Could it be this new fork painted up to look like a Lyrik?
  • 4 1
bikes will weight 40pound in a year or too again
  • 3 0
Make a fork in the old Judy SL yellow damnit
  • 2 0
Please actually call it the Trout, considering the other fork is named of a fish as well.
  • 3 4
Rockshox PR: Fox released the new 38. What do we have?
Rockshox Engineering: We just released the xc stuff. We have nothing enduro!
Rockchox head brain: De-sticker, then spray paint a Lyrik black and pretend it's a prototype until we get something.
  • 1 0
Oh great, just thought about switching team and replacing my 36 with a Lyrik, because RS is objectively the better option. I can't wait for the Lyriks to get down in price!
  • 1 0
Probably will cost a $1000 and still require a zip-tied mud guard. WTF. Why is it taking so long to have a real fender mount standard?
  • 1 1
Surprised it's not 37.94mm with some crazy explanation of how that is the optimal size. I actually have an old 1.5 Totem with blown bushings. I think I will go find it and hang it on the wall.
  • 2 0
Still looks like 35mm stanchions. I don’t think much has changed except the arch and maybe the addition of an adjustment
  • 1 0
In my exam of scale in this photos it would appear to be larger than the 38 Fox stanchions. My guess is 40mm.
  • 1 0
@chasejj: They already posted it´s 38mm just in inches...
  • 2 0
Got pinkbike shitposting on their own website. quality
  • 1 0
Hope it comes with a bolt on mudguard. I don't even care about the stiffness.
  • 3 0
 No Totem no sale .

Totem must be the name. Make it so.
  • 2 0
I see a head to head competition soon.
  • 10 0
 Me too.
  • 1 0
I wonder if this will still work for 98% of riders who don’t actually race enduro? Fingers crossed.
  • 1 0
Well, if we had the Totem in the past, perhaps a Svarog would be appropriate now?
  • 1 0
Hah .. expect this to be 500 euros cheaper than the 38.. If not the totem, it might be called the TITAN
  • 1 0
Hi rockshox Please make a 170mm titanium coiled boxxer for my enduro bike . That would be perfect . Cheers
  • 1 0
No matter what they call it we can just bulk order Totem stickers and thus resolve the issue
  • 1 0
There is such a thing as too much lateral stiffness on mt. bikes. Compliance and well-intended flex are undervalued.
  • 1 0
Well. I don't see a circle for an arch, or decals that a 5 y/o designed, so i'm already interested
  • 2 0
 Bring back the Totem!

  • 1 1
You fools! They're not going to call that beauty Totem, it will be Psylo Resurrection! Whoop Whoop
  • 1 0
Psylos were phased out for the pike, I cant imagine why they would go back to that name
