Highlights & Results: Cape Epic 2023 - Stage 4

Mar 24, 2023
by Ed Spratt

bigquotesHeaven…for mountain bikers. That is the Oak Valley Estate. The fun factor was high for the time trial stage of the Absa Cape Epic with some of the best singletrack in the country on offer to the more than 1000 riders.
Even though the day was slightly less demanding, it remained important for riders to keep their focus and not lose control in the corners and reach the top of the short, sharp climbs.

It was not the first time a time trial had been hosted at the Oak Valley Estate (the last time was in 2019) and the locals made the most of their local knowledge of sections like Rietvlei Magic, Witklippies and Vissie’s Magic.

Our very own Matt beer takes another stage! Stupendous!

I'm a big Nino Schurter fan, but I also wouldn't be mad if Blevins could pull this off.

It’s rad to see a US male do well because “we’ve” been down for decades in XC racing.

Is it just me or is it crazy that there are no bonuses for winning stages? Beers and Blevins have won every stage but one and are in third place. I was trying to follow late in the race and I am guessing they had a mechanical in that one stage.

The fastest riders with the fastest overall time should win imo. Bonusses could change that.

They lost a heap of time on stage 1 due to Blevins having some illness. They're still in the process of bringing back all the time lost. But yes, most professional stage races do offer time bonuses for first, second and third on each individual stage. That said, it likely still wouldn't be enough as they did lose quite a lot of time.

@Lasse2000: idk, the road grand tours have bonuses and it works out okay IMO. It just becomes part of the strategy. Plus it forces the leaders to ride for stage/sector wins instead of just being defensive and wheel-sucking (not that I'm accusing Nino & Andri of doing that).

(obviously there are reasonable counterarguments too)

The Full Highlights format is great. Hoping for something similar on youtube for this years XCO season.

i dont understand these types of xc races. they might as well be riding gravel bikes given the large amount of fireroads and super smooth single track.

I thought Nino was with Lars Foster? What changed.

Forster isn't on the Scott team anymore.
