Video: Hills of Home - Pirmin Kuß

Dec 19, 2013
by Benedikt Ruf

"hills of home" is a Black Forest production by the film crew of workID and german XCO racer Pirmin Kuß. Pirmin rides bikes since day one and straight from the beginning his heart belongs to olympic XCO racing. He rides for the german WHEELER-iXS Team and loves the good time he has with his team buddies during the race season. What he really doesn't like, is the prejudice that cross country fellas are technically unskilled! He tries his best to prove the opposite and puts his heart in his riding. For him it is pure fun to pull his 29" hard tail through the lovely Black Forest and to have a new challenge everyday out there, without the need of full suspension. Nevertheless the 20 years old boy loves all sports which are based on rolling on two wheels, doesn't matter how big they are. He puts a lot of time into digging last year and build his own little pumptrack around the house of his family. He truly believes in the progression and fun that brings the BMX pumptrack riding into his training, besides the tough exercises a racer has to do.

Riding for a video project is a little dream came true for him, because in Pirmins opinion racing isn't only about big races and results. He puts all in and we snapped some awesome shots. After all we had an amazing weekend filming and riding out there and became good friends.

Watch Pirmin blasting some original Black Forest home trails and after it having some fun with his 20" bike on his pumptrack - for him a perfect day. Enjoy!

"Earn your decent" - is the motto of each XCO guy. To shoot uphill action is for sure the more relaxed one compared to riding it.

Awesome views are not a rarity in the black forest, awesome trails inclusive.

Brraaaappp..

Ben behind the big lense. Pirmin followed by the drone passing through the background.

For Pirmin getting sideways and styling it up is as fun as putting horse power on the pedals.

Riding through the black forest jungle.

Some switch backs on the way to the top in "Tour de France - Alpe d'Huez" style. You could be sure that an Cross Country racer knows how to suffer.

Serious business - checkin' out the lines before riding. Pirmin really made sure that everything went the right way over these days.

A bit different spectators wondering who killed their silence.

The whole crew getting the stuff done and checking out if there's another try necessary.

photo
Pirmin getting some air, while Ben nearly crashing with the steady cam, luckily all went good. Not sure if the whips are as good as Nino Schurters, the champ himself?!

"Followed by a ufo." You better go faster than your flying partner.

Another rad panorama, in typical Black Forest style.

Poppin' some manuals - not too easy with such a geometry and a seat post that high. But Pirmin has big fun in playing with his 29er.

photo
Doing some evening laps around the house, even if it is pretty tight it's still not too bad, that backyard.

photo
Another different spectator, "Fridolin" taking a look around what's going on in his territory.

photo
Pirmin got probably the best backyard in his little home town Vöhrenbach. Lucky for the riding scene up there, everybody is invited to come around and having some fun.

We were lucky enough, to had our helicopter friends with us to get some good footage by the drone. They did an awesome job flying and filming.

Tough days of riding behind him! Even a XCO guy get tired sometime.

Zis is all verboten in Germany. It is Illegal to ride single track, und not to ride in Lycra is for crazy men as is to smile and have fun on illegal path. Ve are serious riders for forest roads as everything else is illegal here to ride.

Well I've discovered over the last 20 years that I've lived here that actually everything is illegal but so long as nobody catches you it's ok ;-)

I understand your reaction and the situation, especially at the black forest, isn't easy. But we believe in cooperations between people who love the nature. I also want to mention, that we were in contact with all the landlords and had only positive feedback.

Getting back on track :-) here ... super video ! The bit with the Rabbit made me smile and the zoom out showing the valley below was typical Black Forest ... amazing place to ride.

On the IBC Forum people are complaining that this Video is counter-productive to the DIMB campaign against the 2-meter law .... Typisch Deutsch !!!! The Schwarzwald Touristmusverband should take this video and use it to advertise the Black Forest Area !!! The Greens have already told us to F#ck-off and have made it clear that they are going to ignore the DIMB Petition. So the only way to change the situation is too bring Mountainbiking into the Money-making area ... i.e. Tourism ! More super quality Videos of this sort might just be the key.

Note for all the non-German Pink-bikers :- Cycling on Trails narrower than 2 Meters is illegal in the German South-West State of Baden-Württemberg.

The guy has some serious bike handling skills (reminds me of Schurter). And the video is technically brilliant, no doubt. But to me it is no fun to watch at all. This constant repetition of slow motion and close up kills all flow in the video (reminds me of "NotBad" and "Arrival"). Too sad. The flow of his riding style would have deserved a more fluent videography.
