PRESS RELEASE: Holiday River & Bike Expeditions and Women in the Mountains

Holiday River & Bike Expeditions and Women in the Mountains team up to offer two Women's Mountain Biking Skills Clinics on the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park.

For immediate release - Holiday River & Bike Expeditions, a leader in the backcountry outfitting business for more than 55 years, is teaming up with Park City based Women in the Mountains to offer two skills based clinics in southeast Utah. The clinics aim to create opportunities for women to increase their confidence and riding skills supported by PMBIA coaches and Holiday guides. The classic White Rim Trail offers an ideal location for skill clinics - Holiday guides provide camp gear and support in a 4x4 gear van while Women in the Mountains coaches provide guidance and coaching on the trail.

Trips start and end at Holiday River & Bike Expeditions’ Green River, Utah headquarters, just northwest of Moab, Utah.

September 9-10: 3-day White Rim Trail - Intermediate level riders.
September 25-29: 4.5 day White Rim Trail - Beginner level riders.

Holiday River & Bike Expeditions has been guiding trips since 1966, and specifically guiding Canyonlands mountain biking trips since 1991. With Women in the Mountains now in their 8th season of coaching, this is an ideal time to offer these clinics. Mountain biking continues to grow in popularity, and oftentimes, confidence can be a huge barrier to entry. Holiday guides are industry leaders in running fully supported backcountry trips. The guides handle everything: leading on the trail, providing water and snacks, reserving designated campsites, and hauling all the gear. Women in the Mountains coaches are top-notch certified coaches, with trained eyes and well versed in the most precise language needed to help participants boost their confidence and ride skills.

“We decided to collaborate on two separate clinics in order to offer a wider range of programming so women can select the clinic they will get the most out of,” says Karen Johnson, Holiday’s office manager and lead trip reservationist. The 3-day White Rim Trail Clinic was created for the intermediate mountain biker who is already comfortable with safely braking, and various body positions while riding. This trip “allows women to get out and ride with other women of a similar skill set in a supported environment,” Johnson explains. “We also wanted to create an option for the beginner rider though - the person who has always thought that they wanted to get into mountain biking but weren’t sure where to begin.” Holiday River & Bike Expeditions even offers full suspension Specialized Alloy Stumpjumper bikes for rent for their trips. On the 4.5 day trip, Women in the Mountains coaches will more actively evaluate riders’ opportunities and then build in drills and training time to help develop these foundational skills.

There’s a certain camaraderie that comes from doing hard things together. These trips bring all the aspects of life-long bonds into one place: travel in the backcountry with a group of like-minded women, challenge yourself mentally and physically, and bond over a campfire each night after a full day of riding. “We’ve offered bike trips for over 20 years now, but specifically highlighting the collaborative effort of a women’s bike trip is long overdue, and we’re so excited about this new partnership!” commented Johnson when Erica Tingey, owner and founder of Women in the Mountains, first reached out.

About Women in the Mountains
Founded in 2016 by professional mountain bike racer, Erica Tingey, Women in the Mountains started as a one-off three-day mountain biking clinic. The clinic was so successful that there was immediate demand for repeat clinics! Now in their 8th season of coaching, Erica has a team of 11 women working as coaches and support staff, and they have coached over 2,000 women. All coaches are PMBIA certified, and they aim to help women riders transition from fearing the hills to mastering their riding skills, regardless of their starting level. Skill development is approached from a safe and logical skillpoint, presented in an accessible manner.
