Fully outfitted and supported so you can get the most of your biking and hiking time.

Holiday River & Bike Expeditions started guiding White Rim Trail mountain biking trips in 1991. As demand grew and repeat customers were looking for new places to explore, Holiday Director of Operations, Tim Gaylord, partnered with Founder, Dee Holladay, to design four and five-day trips through the Maze District of Canyonlands. “The Maze District is incredibly remote, requires extensive research, a permit, and a 4x4 vehicle to access, making it difficult to outfit a multiday do-it-yourself trip,” Gaylord explains, “the reality is, you’re going into the most isolated section of an already intensely secluded region of southeastern Utah. Reliable water sources are limited, navigation can be tricky, and rescue can be difficult.” Backpacker Magazine designated The Maze as one of the “10 Most Dangerous Hikes in America.” Add these challenges to the fact that permits are scarce, and going with a commercial outfitter providing gear and support just makes sense.

Trips start and end at Holiday River & Bike Expeditions’ Green River, Utah headquarters, just northwest of Moab, Utah.

Aptly named, The Maze District of Canyonlands offers a seemingly unending labyrinth of buttes, meanders, and slot canyons. “It beckons the most adventurous at heart, and if you answer its call, it does not disappoint,” Karen Johnson, Holiday’s Office Manager, and Reservationist, explains, “There are so many highlights of the five-day Maze trip, but what guests can’t stop raving about is the layover day at the Maze Overlook camp.” There’s nothing quite like the thunderous silence of a night in the desert backcountry. The layover day allows guests to hike to one of the world's most famous rock art panels - The Harvest Scene. Along with the fact that a smaller group size allows for a more intimate experience, the National Park Service limits each permit to 7 guests to protect the resource. With two guides, this trip is Holiday’s smallest guest-to-guide ratio. The guides who lead Maze trips are serious mountain bikers. For a company that got its name for running big whitewater while educating guests on the sensitive desert ecosystem, the bike guides are top-notch. “It’s hard to find someone with more stoke than Jack,” Johnson says. She’s referring to Jack MacClarence, Holiday’s Bike Manager. Jack knows The Maze District like the back of his own hand, and in addition to getting guests excited about their ride, he brings infectious laughter, gourmet cooking skills, and in-depth regional knowledge to all of his trips.

Holiday River & Bike Expeditions prides itself on running first-class excursions. Guides are trained in advanced wilderness medicine, vehicle repair, trailside mountain bike repair, and the environment. The guides learn geology, biology, anthropology, and even local history to share with and educate guests. In addition to viewing the pictograph panels left by the Ancestral Puebloans, The Maze leads riders through sinuous terrain storied with lore from Butch Cassidy, Edward Abbey, and even more recent wayward adventurers. A bike trip through The Maze leaves guests laying down at night remembering days full of flowy double track, technical sandy washes, new memories, scenic vistas, and of course, desert outlaw lore to dream about. Holiday is one of only five Canyonlands National Park authorized concessioners guiding mountain biking trips through The Maze.

This looks a lot like what Western Spirit cycling adventures has been doing for years. Glad to see pinkbike is now doing paid articles by businesses.

It's free for all to announce, and talk about events/trips, etc.

We are good friends with the folks at Western Spirit. All of the commercial outfitters have a great working relationship as we all got our permits at the same time and we support one another.

In the spirit of putting positivity out into the world.

I've done a private trip like this. The Maze is an incredible area. Riding is jeep roads, so not exciting, but incredibly scenic and remote. Our trip was early July, brutally hot, and we were the only group in that district of the park.

The maze district is an incredible place. There's no legal singletrack you're allowed to ride on a bike (cuz it's a national park), but still a great place to explore.
