The 2017 edition of Red Bull Hardline is set to go off this weekend. The event is one that has the best riders in the world honestly nervous, with massive man-made features, technical natural terrain, and speeds that only a World Cup racer can sustain as riders pin it against the clock.

Ahead of this weekend's event, Red Bull caught up with Gee Atherton, who has spent a good amount of time on the terrain here, last year's winner, Bernard Kerr, and podium finisher, Adam Brayton, to gather their thoughts on the event and how they feel coming into what will be the most challenging race weekend of their year.

My local bar they like what they like. I would watch either. When you're drunk everything is amazing, stare at the wall for 3 hours.

Gonna blast it on the TV at the VFW I am am a member at haha. Mountain biking is good for the soul. Unfortunately, I haven't ridden in over a year ????

@nug12182 you're a national hero need people like you in my town

I don't know if you've been paying attention, but people aren't very stoked with the NFL right now. I would be very down to watch DH at a restaurant.

"makes you feel like you are quite a good bike rider" --Bernard Kerr. Mr. Kerr, I am surprised it took this event to make you feel that way about yourself.

And something we would all have in common...Riding this course would also make me feel like quite a good bike rider.

Riding any part of that course would make me feel pretty stoked

@zede: i know, what does it mean?

That's the understatement of the year.

@Katakalism: Riding that course would make me feel like "Am I EVER going to get out of this body cast?"

When Rachel makes places like Val di Sole look easy then says she couldn't ride Hardline it gives you an idea just how mental this track is.
  • 23 0
I think it's because of the enormous jumps
  • 4 0
@ORTOGONAL555: I think so. I've seen her say in past vids that she rides the course but skips the jumps.
  • 42 1
Where's Claudio with the course preview? -1
  • 35 1
I would love to see Gwin take a stab at this.
  • 56 3
Just make it a YT Mob party with Gwin, Zink, and Lacondeguy Smile
  • 20 0
 @lobohusky:
A million up votes for this! Lacon was one person I was thinking of that this seems so well suited for, given his love of big jumps and his history racing DH.
  • 5 0
@lobohusky: that Lacondeguy looked freaking fast on a video somewhere... may be he could smoke that track
  • 5 1
@lobohusky: and a course preview from Tippee
  • 5 0
@lobohusky: Lacondeguy would probly superman the first jump and land on the finish line. Smile
  • 3 5
Probably too gnarly for the FEST boys.
  • 3 0
 @chyu: How wrong you were!
  • 28 0
Absolute Madness. I think the intersection of skill and ballz required for this is unmatched by any other DH contest.
  • 12 6
 #FestSeries
  • 8 1
@pepper8: fest isn't the same. Fest events are big jump lines but they don't have the technical stuff in between. Gnarly for sure but not really comparable.
  • 12 2
To me, red bull hardline is more like "Bigger and harsher World Cup DH track meets Fest series"
  • 25 6
I bet Gee hates his brother for building this track. He has no choice but to ride it. Poor Gee.
  • 26 0
Nah, i think Gee loves it. The guys has Freeride in his blood from his old Rampage days.
  • 23 1
basically the ultimate sibling prank when you are both pro mountain bikers
  • 40 1
Gee's got a bit of calculated madness about him. The guy raced a renault clio down the hills of Lisbon in 2005 on the model of bike I still use and which refuses to die. It was for Top Gear and therefore fake, but still... And he made jagged bits of Utah look like a flow line some years back. He's just got resting bitch face, it's not his fault. My wife has it.
  • 13 0
Gee basically a well decorated racer+freerider, his Rampage days, his Urban DH days, and his stripes in world champs showed it all. When you get older you get wiser and calculate everything (risk Vs reward). He's getting matured, maybe lost some speed, but he's still on of the best the freeracer for me.
  • 15 0
@lobohusky: So many people criticise Gee, but he's one of the toughest riders out there. His Rampage runs were awesome, and his crash was massive. He's a seriously gnarly guy.
  • 2 0
@malv173: yeah I think there's a bit of hate towards him, but for me it's just about his recent lack of really good results ( he is working his way back up top though ). I think people misjudge his ultra focused attitude. When you are at the top nobody cares of your attitude, but when you get worse results than normal, it may look you are a bit opinionated.
  • 16 0
Basically if Yoan will survive this event he's the winner for me ...
  • 2 0
Unfortunately he just announced on his Instagram that his out of the race tomorrow
  • 17 3
None of the top top boys are willing to risk it IMHO. Not that the field isnt elite as FK anyways - Would love to see Gwin in there, Murica - Danny Hart- Greg Minar too.
  • 13 1
Yeah but if those guys got hurt- there goes their world cup season which matters more than hardline
  • 7 0
@Chingus-Dude: just shows you what the guys are putting on the line that do participate.
  • 24 0
Danny Hart won it in 2014 ....
  • 21 1
Gee is always a top rider. The fact the still rides after battling injuries all season show how much he loves riding more than competing.

@EKrum: Fact is, he's not. He was great a few years ago, but now everybody else has caught up to his standard of riding. If it weren't for Rachel, he'd probably be on a much lower budget team....
  • 16 0
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: ooo sister burn, those are gnar
  • 11 3
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: have you seen the list of injuries he has had over the last two years? If you think he has raced a single world cup since the middle of last year in full health then you are sorely misinformed.

@humoroususername: The excuses don't matter. He isn't getting results, and that's the truth. Loic broke his collarbone mid season last year, but hes world champ this year.
  • 1 0
 @logic007: Same as Rampage
  • 3 0
I ran into Danny Hart at Whistler in 2015 around the same time of hardline and asked him about it. He said it wasn't worth getting hurt and rather ride for fun at Whistler.
  • 5 1
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: a collarbone break is not a serious injury at all. A dislocated hip is...personally I think Gee crashes too much but the injuries are completely valid excuses.
  • 2 0
@humoroususername: very true. I just dislocated and broke my shoulder. Rehab progress aside, minimum time until I'm back on mtb is 6 months. Insane to believe he can be riding top notch when he's habitually in a stage of recovery.
  • 3 0
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: minnaar also had a bad period, many injuries (his knee was a big pb for 2 years at least), average results, and then he stayed healthy and came back at the top level. The same could happen with gee
  • 3 0
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: 2016 fort bill Gee(fastest qualifier) was up on Minaar at split 1 before he crashed, 2017 BDS Gee was was trading fastest times with Danny Hart and seeded first before his crash. The guy is still bloody quick on a bike when he stays on it

 @mchacker: quali =/= race run
  • 6 0
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: it's just amazing how people like you just cannot admit when you are wrong. Qualifying first and leading at the first split at Fort William shows he clearly still has the pace. Just admit it, you are talking illogical shit about him because you don't like him.
  • 1 0
@slayerdegnar: he's been in Whistler the last few years in September... there right now.
  • 10 1
Stoked to see Reynolds in the field!
  • 13 4
Did we just see Gee Atherton smile!?
  • 8 2
Sorry, no. But it was a valiant attempt. Semenuk is up for the year at one to nil.
  • 4 0
Can't wait for hardline! Don't care who wins really as you can't ride this one without laying it on the line. This is truly a; "Go big or go home!" event. That being said I'm rooting for Gee as I honestly think Dan built this course to bust his brother's balls. So Gee... pin it will ya?!
  • 5 0
Stoked to see the Claw there! Can't think of the last time he raced the clock... Maybe the Fall Brawl?
  • 2 0
The Claw isn't riding sadly. He's injured himself (as per his Insta account).
  • 2 0
 Claws out, crashed first day
  • 1 0
@mountainyj: that's a bummer, will he be able to ride Rampage?
  • 2 0
@JoseBravo: Hope so. Sounds like he's just banged up and super sore, made a couple comments on IG.
  • 5 0
Why is it that they can't do a livestream of this event? And why do they keep insisting that it is live nevertheless?
  • 10 5
So pumped for Sunday! This is gonna be even better than Worlds

Wont take much to be better than the Worlds. That said, Hardline is going to be SWEET!

At least they wont be able to ride it on enduro bikes
  • 9 1
@logic007: As a racer type of guy, I prefer Hardline. However, that doesn't take anything away from Rampage. that is a whole different level of insanity
  • 8 2
 @logic007: I like hardline more
  • 7 0
It's also going to be better than Worlds because we will actually get to watch it without faking where we live to the interwebs.

@liamg-alex: took me 1 hour to find a good VPN
  • 5 1
Bruce Kline for the upset !!!
  • 2 1
Sorry not to see Ruaridh Cunningham at hardline this year, with a win and second last year. He had the most style by miles last year.
  • 2 0
Surely it's not being shown live, it must be as live if it's at 6pm local time...?
  • 2 3
 Although Gee is fast and talented, I think his winning days are over. Saying that anything can happen at Hardline, so maybe he can pull one out of the bag. Think it's due to rain most of the weekend too, so it'll be interesting for sure;
  • 1 1
It's going to be a living hell if it does.
  • 1 0
 Go Adam...i hope you win!
