I Crashed Hard - A Post-Injury Update from Alicia

I don't remember this at all, but my dad (also pictured) tells me those elementary-looking puzzles were pretty hard for me.

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I've written on here, so I'm just dropping in to say hi and give an update. You haven't heard from me much lately and probably won't hear from me much for a while, because my main priority right now is brain injury recovery.

I crashed a mountain bike September 30, 2022, and have been working through a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) since then.

To start, the fact that I’ve recovered as much as I have makes me feel very thankful. A doctor a few days ago called my recovery "miraculous." I feel simultaneously both very unlucky to be in this situation in the first place and very lucky that my recovery has gone about as well as it could have, mainly because I've had excellent care, I'm 27 years old so my brain is still malleable, and my family has been able to help take care of and advocate for me. I spent the first several days after my crash in a coma, then the next time period in something pretty similar to a coma from which I could be woken forcibly but not easily. It was exciting for those around me when I began sleeping only 22 hours each day, rather than my previous 24. A priest was brought in the first night to perform the last rites because I wasn’t expected to live, but then I did. (I'm not remotely religious so it's hard to know what my last rites would have included, but the hospital was working on solving some bigger problems at that time.)

What actually happened, I don't exactly know. I know that I was riding the biggest jumps of my life – Bellingham’s Blue Steel line – and I heard I'd successfully sessioned the set-up jumps but crashed on one of the first big ones (which is a little disappointing to hear, to be honest, since I wish I could ride those without wrecking myself). A nurse who happened to be on-scene helped evacuate me, and I was fortunate to have an ambulance at the ready as part of the jumps event I was doing. Then, I was moved to my local hospital, where I spent about three weeks in the ICU. After that, I was moved to a hospital in the Denver area that specializes in treating brain injuries. My memory restarts roughly mid-November during my stay there. Finally, I was moved to an outpatient therapy clinic in Portland, Oregon, where I continued the intensive all-day every-day therapy before finally being released to go home.

I've been really appreciative of the people in my life during this time period. You all are the highlights of an otherwise pretty grim phase. I shared an update on Instagram that received a surprising amount of kindness and well-wishes. My friend Chelsea Kimball (check out her riding if you haven't - she's an incredible ripper) started a GoFundMe campaign where she shared updates on my progress and collected funds to put toward my recovery. I'm very glad that everyone around me has stepped up in the ways that they have.

I'm also absurdly thankful for my job and coworkers, who have shown more than ever before that they have my back. Everyone I work with, both near and far, has checked in consistently, been willing to work with me on my now-necessary time off, is helping to preserve my job for when I can come back to it, and so much more. None of that was necessary, all of it has been because they're kind, caring people, and when I think about all the jobs I've had in years past, there's no job situation that could possibly have been as helpful as this one throughout this injury. Pinkbike and Outside, you all are amazing and I am so, so thankful to have you in my life.

photo
I hope you finish all your rides looking, uh, not like this.

While of course this injury has made me reassess my risk-taking, I glad that my injury is a sort of predictable outcome of hitting big jumps. While in the hospital, I met many fellow patients who had been victimized by entirely unpredictable circumstances – things like being hit by a car while walking on a sidewalk. I think I’d be having a much harder time right now making sense of my current condition if my injury were something random and unexpected, but the fact that I intentionally made choices that I’ve always known could lead here makes it somewhat bearable.

Now, I’m mostly back. I’m missing hearing in one ear, which isn't expected to come back, missing some peripheral vision, which may or may not come back, and my balance, memory, and processing speed are worse than they used to be. I'm not working right now, largely to prioritize my (now very frequent) doctor's appointments and because stress is definitively bad for my brain, but I’m hoping to come back before too long. I miss my job, my coworkers, the feeling of familiarity... all of it, more than I ever would have expected.

It's funny how our perspectives can change so quickly. Before my crash, I remember feeling exhausted because I habitually sign myself up for too much. I'd just spent a month in Utah paragliding and competing in a weeklong paragliding race, then began the most recent Field Test in Whistler. Despite paragliding and Field Tests being two of my favorite ways to spend time, I just wanted to rest. Now that I've spent almost four months forced to rest, being tired from doing my sports sounds pretty nice. I'm now back living in Bellingham, which feels like a great move toward recovery.

My next steps are a little hazy. Depending on the frequency of my doctor's appointments and how antsy I feel (very, as of right now), I'm hoping to start moving back into my job before too long. I'm not riding bikes right now, but I do expect to get back on a bike in the next few months. (I'm not right now mainly because my balance is worse than it used to be and I really, really need to avoid hitting my head again, since I'm now at risk of a more serious re-injury.)

photo
Tired. I'm still tired, but not like this.

All of this is a long-winded way of saying I'm kind of not okay and kind of okay at the same time, and that I'll be back. One of my first projects once I start working again will be to write a review of the helmet I was wearing when I crashed, which, honestly, I'm excited to write. That helmet did its part to save my life.

Until then, please take care, everyone. Stay safe and have as much fun as possible.

Alicia

Alicia, don't let them ever tell you what you cant do. The human body is amazing at healing, set your goals high and forget the naysayers. My wife was told she would never walk or use her hands again, not only does she walk but she RIDES. One thing that really seemed to help with the brain part of my wife's injuries was daily time in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Healing Vibes

Hello everyone. First of all, great to hear Alicia is on the road to recovery. Secondly, reading this article made me go shop for a downhill rated full face helmet. I don’t crash a lot, but when I do, it tends to be catastrophic. I came across a deal that was too good to be true for a troy Lee designs D4. I was about to buy it and figured I wanted to look into it more and ****IT IS A SCAM!**** The website is called designscycling.com, don’t buy anything from that website. I called the business at the address they listed, and the business told me that they are running a scam and have been for about six months. Hope this helps. Thank you.

Brain injuries are big league scary! Great to see you're recovering Alicia!

 Heal up well Alicia! Smile

@fabwizard: I would only piggyback off this to say that reaching whatever goals you set needs to be a marathon and not a sprint! While it sounds like you know the risk of reinjury, it's worth stating a hundred times that rushing back to anything just isnt worth it. I think we'd all agree taking a couple more months than you might want to (or a year) to get back on the bike is better than coming back too soon and risking motor skills (and bike time) for the rest of your life! It will all be here when you get back -- just focus on healing up! All the good vibes.

Thanks for your update. Great writing as usual. You are so loved! Take care and aim high

This is the first PB post in a long time where I read every single word. Best wishes from all of us Alicia. As a side note that Blue Steel jump line is insane.
  • 46 2
@PHX77: I see nothing wrong with this post; just a good hearted individual looking out for the interest of fellow mtbers and sending the good vibe to this suffering girl. The people here with fake virtue that down vote you will comment for this girl's recovery then disapprove what is being brought to our attention with helpfulness, as to avoid the fraudsters, which is for the very thing that she points out herself was the protection that cushioned her fragile brain during that devastating accident. PBer's need some reflection examination of themselves and their construed virtuous ideals!

Thanks for the heads up and looking out for us brother and hope you find a solid bucket for that noggin!

I’m so glad to be able to read that you’re making such great progress and how awesome the Pinkbike team are in supporting you. Sending all the good chilled out healing vibes your way and can’t wait to read and see your awesome work when you’re back feeling healthy once more.

@LuvAZ: Same here, first one in a while where I read every word. And much like @sspiff above, this is the post I was hoping to read one day.

I'm so incredibly stoked to see that you are doing so much better, Alicia! And maybe even more excited to hear that you'll be writing again for PB as your condition improves and time permits. The wellest of wishes for you my friend!

This is the update we have all been waiting for! Thank goodness you're on a path to recovery. The grey thing in your head is no joke and it's the only one we get. So very happy to hear you're doing considerably better then you where. Shout out to all the medical staff and support networks you have to be with you on this path.

Overcoming all the odds and pushing through the hardest and darkest times. Can't even explain how freaking happy and thankful I am to have you with us. Can't wait to see you and we're gonna do that MELLOW bike ride together for sure ❤️❤️❤️ thanks for your honesty and opening the dialogue for others who are experiencing similar tragedies
  • 3 0
When you're laid up for a while, all you wish for is a MELLOW ride in the sunshine, you don't need to race out and hit the jump line again. A chill cruise with friends is the total dream. A good perspective CC.

I can hardly wait to be back at it and to see you @christinachappetta!! Let's ride again before too long!

I find it very brave to share such a no-holds-barred update. Including those gnarly pictures, it must be so difficult seeing those without remembering anything. Respect, and keep on healing up. Also, respect to Pinkbike and Outside for offering support.

Good to see you posting here again, Alicia! I'd been keeping an eye on the GoFundMe page to see updates, and wasn't expecting to see anything from you here any time soon. I hope your recovery continues to go well and you can get back out there having fun ASAP.

Thanks to Chelsea for keeping us up to date last fall. Heal up Alicia, looking forward to you back at pb.

Looks like I picked the perfect time to chop onions.

I reckon this is the update that 99% of visitors to this site were waiting for. It’s so so good to hear of the progress being made and better still that you’re changing at the bit to get back to work. I think the majority of us would say that it can’t happen too soon - you’ve most definitely been missed!
  • 3 0
Yup. I'm definitely one of that 99%.

Damn, I've been waiting to see your first words back on here. I remember when the news of your crash broke, hearing the details was scary. I'm thankful that the community has stepped up for you, and thankful that you're doing, "Okay, but sort of not okay," enough to put some words down.

Rest up, and I look forward to hearing you on the podcasts again in the future!

This is a really positive story, amazing attitude and spirit from you. The second-to-last photo, the one with you sleeping and still displaying remnants of your accident, made me weep a little. It made me wonder how I'd feel as a parent, if I ever had to see my own daughter in such a fragile position. My own daughter is young - under 10; she has an adventurous spirit, which I hope does not dilute as she gets older. Get well soon.
  • 12 0
As a parent of of 2 kids who race DH you have to support their desire for adventure and try not to think about the potential negatives. It can be horrifying and scarey to watch sometimes but you have to trust their abilities.
  • 5 0
I had the same response to that photo

I’m only 38 but am overwhelmed with a weird emotional rush whenever someone young enough to be my kin is hurt or injured.

Alecia, it's a huge relief to read this and see you're on the road to recovery. I also suffered a traumatic brain injury from a fall while skateboarding at age 19. I took a big risk (which I'd taken several times before) and that time it did not work out. I spent the next five days in the ICU in a coma. I lost my sense of smell permanently and suffered amnesia and did not remember the accident or the week leading up to it. I felt like a different person from that day forward, though friends and family saw the same person they had always known. Recovery was a process occurring over a period of years. Much of it was learning that the emotions I was feeling and challenges I was having were due to my brain healing, even though I was eager to get on with life. Like you said, I did it to myself. I felt a lot of shame around that. I wrestled for years often wishing I could take that day back. I'm 41 now. Would I take that day back now if I could? I don't know. Not likely, but I certainly wouldn't wish it on someone else. The experience shaped many of the discissions I made in subsequent years. It was part of what made me who I am today. I've lived a truly fulfilling life that I'm very grateful for. The experience taught me patience. It taught me that adversity can be a gift. Be patient with the process you've undertaken and give yourself grace. Accidents happen and you deserve the best. Good luck and best wishes to you.

Wow, inspiring to hear you talk about your choices to take risk and not feeling like a victim! With your attitude and strength you will come back stronger than ever. Keep up the hard work!

I feel forever thankful that I was able to help ❤️ happy to read this xx

PROTECT YOUR MELLONS FOLKS. Even a couple hundred dollars is cheaper than even stepping foot into a hospital let alone the bill to get there. Have always preached that to weary helmet buyers in my time at various bike shops. Amazing way to end the week by hearing this news. I'm definitely gonna call my bike and helmet to tell them how much I love them. Truly inspiring stuff that makes me appreciate being in good health. Warm wishes, Alicia! Vicariously excited for you to get back on a bike!!!

I’m sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you fully heal and can return to full activities. Don’t rush things.

In 2018 I landed on my face, got life flighted. I fractured my face, broke my elbow, and don’t remember a few days or anything from that ride. Couldn’t drive or work for 6 weeks, then spent the next 6 months taking daily naps and avoiding groups. Fortunately my wife, kids, extended family, and my work supported me during my recovery. Today I’m fully recovered. Am able to ride hard without hesitation. But I do wear a full face helmet for the most basic rides.

This is a hard piece to read, but such an important one. Thank you for writing it, and we're rooting for you as you work through your recovery. Brain injuries are for real, folks.

The lady inspires some real self-evaluation here. From judging my charity for others, through my skill level and the risk-taking I'm familiar with. As for her return to the workforce, she could model those products in that shot in front of the mountains. Somehow even makes the bandages look right.

So happy to hear that you're recovering well Alicia! My sister had a similar injury and she had to learn everything from scratch again. Eventually she was driving, working again, got married and had 2 kids. Your recovery seems to be going super fast.
  • 9 0
Great news! This beats PB announcing the winners of the advent calendar and would make me smile even if I had to change the headset bearings on my headset cable routed bike! Don't rush back to early, we will be here when you are ready! Can't wait to hear that you have been out on your first ride.

Jeez, it's good to finally hear from you. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say you were very missed. So good to hear you are recovering from such a trauma. That is some scary stuff I think a lot of us can relate with, although maybe not at that level.
  • 8 0
So happy to hear you are on the road to recovery. You are a ray of positivity in a media world that can sometimes be pretty negative. Smile

I can totally relate to the "I did it to myself" and that makes it a little easier to deal with. I feel the same way. I've got all sorts of metal and donated tissues in me from several bad wrecks...but I feel lucky, very lucky...because everything bad (physically) that happed to me was my own fault and I did it having fun. So many people thru no fault of their own get crushed or mangled at random and probably spend a long time asking "why me?". I don't, I just look in the mirror. Get well (as you can) soon. I can't shred like I used to, but I can still go fast enough to have a good time. You will too, Alicia.
  • 5 0
 Hey Alicia,
like all the others here i'm stoked to read from you. I had a traumatic brain injury myself while beeing one of those "other guys" who simply slipped on the stairs from their bedroom. I was 16 and like all kids at the time dreaming of becoming the next Matt Hunter. It was incredibly frustrating to be set back by such a stupid incident with only myself to blame. I went through the usual and recovered fully after a couple of months, except for the loss of my sense of smell. That was was a small price to pay and the according insurance rate bought me a three weeks trip to Whistler the year after. In the long run, the whole thing changed my life for the better. I became a way more relaxed and attentive person, acknowledging that I had been really lucky after all. I hope everyone reading your article will take proper protection, insurance, safety and life itself more seriously.

Your contributions to this website have been an absolute enrichment. It seems like you're in great hands all around I wish you all the best to a great recovery. Take it easy and all the time you need.

you got this, Alicia! it's really nice to hear from you, and also super curious about the helmet review.

I've been more and more cautious and considering a full-face helmet, even for trail/enduro riding.

take care, sending you all the positive energies for a full recovery Smile
  • 4 0
You're living my worst fears...I'm so sorry for you, but so happy that you're recovering. Keep up the good attitude as best you can. Accept that sometimes you will be frustrated and sometimes you will be afraid and keep being you.
  • 4 0
Glad to see you back on the site, even if only for a quick update! Very glad to hear you're recovering. You probably don't need anyone telling you about recovery but for anyone reading the comments, "The Night the Lights Went Out" by Drew Magary is a great account of his TBI and the long recovery process. It gave me a bit more insight into how these injuries work and also made me look ridiculous laughing very hard in an airport terminal.
  • 3 0
I hope you read this. Take care of yourself first, because that's what you'll have as you grow older. As a rodeo cowboy in my younger days, I've seen many an accident similar to your results. Enjoy what you can as you recover, and don't put on that expectation to do something because you once could. It makes for a great story when we recover and defy the odds, but no one tells of all the others who re-injure as a result of the their attempts. There so much you can do and stay involved with something you love, just do in way that makes sense. Take care, and get better.

So thankful for your update Alicia and thank you for sharing! This might get the cake as the most supportive comment thread on any PB article. Thank you to Chelsea for the updates. Looking forward to seeing you back around bikes when the time is right.

Missed your witty and thoughtful writing, that seems to be intact! Heal soon!!
  • 3 0
This article really makes me really happy (considering what it nearly was).

Whatever you do in biking Alicia is not as important as YOU, being back. The world's a better place with AL in it.

The entire community is sending good vibes your way!

Wishing Alicia the absolute best and looking forward to her first article back about the helmet she was wearing during the crash. I'm very interested to read that.

I also want to add that I thought this update was beautifully written and conveyed a complex situation with perfect clarity (and a little humor thrown in, too) - just really awesome to see as a fellow writer and happy for Alicia that she seems as sharp as ever with her words.
  • 2 0
Sending healing vibes to you Alicia. Head injuries are no joke. Happy to see you are improving and are well cared for. I crashed at the end of September as well. I will probably never mountain bike again due to my injuries but I feel very fortunate that I'm still alive and get to watch my little girl grow up. If anyone is reading this and doesn't have accident insurance I highly advise it if you are forced out of work.
  • 3 1
Alicia, make sure you don't expect linear, weekly improvement. Be patient. This type of recovery will have varied rates of rehabilitation gains that are not predictable (compared to traditional sports rehab). Glad you have a great rehab team around you and wishing you a fast recovery! Nick Nosek Physical Therapist

My wife and I were devastated when we'd heard about your crash Alicia. But it's really really great to see you are on the road to recovery. I suffered a TBI when I was in my late teens, and reading your account brought back a lot of memories about those tough times. Having experienced many of the successes and set backs you are inevitably facing daily, I can say, it gets better! Don't stop pushing. When I got injured I was told I'd never ride again and that I'd be lucky to even have a semi normal life. Here I am 20 years later still riding bikes as passionately as ever and with a great life. You're story is inspiring as hell and know you've got lots of people cheering you on!

Thanks for sharing Alicia heal fast ride fast be free again!!
Mountain biking is risky Business we are all playing with every time we ride. We know this, we still do it, and bad things happen sometimes. This type of news is the worst. When we beat that risk (and we know it could have gotten us) there is the reward a lot of us are after.
Not a single gnarly descent that I don't think about this sometimes wondering why I do it. I've been fortunate enough to come back from multiple injuries and still ride. I also think about that a lot. Not really sure the point of this we (all) understand it fully just letting my feelings speak
  • 2 0
Wow, that must have been quite the slam. I’ve walked around that jump line with buddies and just couldn’t wrap my head around it. To me, that’s a full helmet/pads line, since it’s so exposed and mega.

Everyone has a courage limit and skill limit, but sometimes shit happens to the best of us.

Wishing you a fast and peaceful recovery.
  • 2 0
Thank you for your post, you almost made my cry with happiness at your recovery. The first picture of you and your Dad and then rhw pictures of you in the hospital made me think of how much your family must have been in agony. I am so glad they can now rejoice in your recovery. Best wishes and may your recovery continue at an even more miraculous pace!

Good to se you writing again on PB. I followed the updates on the go fund me page and they were kind of scary at the beginning. Glad to see that you're on the road to recovery. Take time, health is the more important thing in life.
  • 2 0
Hopefully you get back to being on the bike soon. Injuries like that are brutal and can often ruin your confidence and prevent you from going back to doing what you love. Take it easy and focus on healing both your body and mind.

You know it’s serious when you’re sent to Craig. I’ve got two buddies both spent time at Craig for TBI and spinal injuries. One ~15 years ago flight for life off Keystone and kept in a coma for over a week to let swelling subside and another just a year ago, flight for life and basically got his spine spliced back together. Both are doing well today all things considered. The staff at Craig are miracle workers, they know what they’re doing for sure.
  • 2 0
As my buddy that just got out less than a year ago and is still learning to walk and pour drinks at his bar again, let alone get his kids to school says.
“It’s a marathon not a sprint.”
Take the time to rest and fully recover. Godspeed
  • 1 1
…as for the buddy that was in there 15 years ago or so, he’s been back to the same old shit that landed him there to begin with for a while now. He took maybe 3-4 years to slowly come back, doing all the occupational therapy, etc. but around 5 years post accident he was hucking his meat and flipping shit again. He’s been the most likely to land himself back in a Craig bed for a while. Some people don’t learn, but then again the body and mind, especially a young one, is amazing.
Patience, perseverance, and rest seems to be the key.
Hope you never have to spend a night in Denver at Craig hospital. …but if you do you have the best looking after you

I really don’t have anything to add to the comments above, but I wish to express both my sympathies for the situation you are in, and my happiness at your recovery so far. I admire your passion for this sport, where most of us are just weekend warriors. Please keep in touch with the PB fam when you can/will.
God bedring!

Wow. So good to hear from you. The road to recovery is a marathon. I am glad you have the support and mindset to make it all the way. Given the reflective nature of this update you have come a long way already, so keep going. Hope to hear more about your recovery soon.

So SO stoked on your recovery and your optimism. While I'm sure the journey has been more difficult than you can ever articulate into words and not something most people can truly empathize with, you are incredibly inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing. Hope you are being kind to yourself in these moments and wishing you all the best x

Hi Alicia, hope you feel the love and positive vibes we are sending you. Fantastic, right?
You got this, you will come out of it stronger, wiser and more appreciative of your surroundings. You will enjoy life in a diferent way and value every bit of it.
You are loved, strong and worthy. Keep fighting, you will be riding your favourite trial soon, just be patient.

Alicia: I had a crash that broke my mandible in half, and completely split open my face from my lower lip through my nostril. It took almost two years of surgeries to get back to "normal" (lots of metal, fake teeth, etc.). I got pretty emotional reading this piece. The beginning of the process is so, so scary because you don't know exactly where you'll get back to. You seem like an incredibly strong person, and I know you'll persevere. Good luck!

I’m sad to hear about this. I’ve had many stints in the hospital (nothing as bad as this though). I’m glad you are on the road to recovery. I’m looking forward to you being back on the pinkbike youtube. Best wishes from Alberta Canada.

great to get an update on this very very scary accident Alicia, very best of luck to you and a speedy recovery. looking forward to reading your articles and seeing photos/videos of you riding in the future.

Good to know that you're doing better! You've been in our thoughts and prayers.

first, thank you for writing this and really glad you are making progress. I can't wait to see you back on a bike (and read that helmet review !)
  • 2 0
Glad to see you're on what looks to be the path to a speedy recovery. Your contributions to pinkbike have been missed the past few months, I'm looking forward to reading them once again.
  • 4 0
We missed you very much and are looking forward to your return in the MTB community. Take care and heal well.

Glad to hear you pulled through the worst of it Alicia and you're the road back to health. As long as that road may be, keep on keeping on, we're all rooting for you!
  • 2 0
Wow! So glad to hear from you, Alicia, speaking for myself, I was sure worried when we heard about your crash! Glad you're, y'know, alive, and recovering! I'll be sending up prayers for you!

I'm curious about the helmet. Was it a full face?

 probably not.

 Hey, yep it was!

 @alicialeggett

Want to share the make and model and maybe save someone else before they need to wait for your review?

@alicialeggett: Must have been an insane crash. Glad you survived and are on the road to recovery.
  • 1 0
@NBainas: Bluegrass Eagle Legit Carbon. I'm not sure whether knowing that will help anyone since I have no comparison to other helmets but I do like this one.
  • 1 0
Happy to hear your recovery is going well!
I remember my first ride after a wicked crash jumping that put me in the ICU for 8 days and months of recovery... it's such an amazing feeling to feel free again on your bike!
Cheers to when you get to pedal again : )
  • 1 0
Thank you Alicia for your heartfelt update. Your writing is the same as pre-injury and so happy for that. I’ve always enjoyed your articles and hope that when the time is right, you’ll be back keeping us entertained with this helmet review, or perhaps any other ideas and stories you have up your sleeve.
  • 5 0
 I’m not crying, you’re crying.
  • 1 0
Speedy recovery Alicia! Hopefully you are on the bike sooner than later. I have been following the recovery of Anneke Beerten, and I am sure you will be back at it like she is. Kudos to PB and Outside for standing by one of their own.
  • 1 0
So happy to read this and see that you're moving in a good direction, Alicia! Despite this being, as you described it yourself "kind of not okay and kind of okay at the same time", this is the most uplifting article on PB that I can recall.
All the best in your recovery and we're all awaiting more good news and articles from you, whenever that happens!
  • 4 1
Thank you for the update; for taking the time to do that. Best to you and hope that things work out as well as they can for you
  • 1 0
Great to hear that you are mostly back and optimistic. Great perspective about the people who suffer from tbi in accidents which are not their fault. I was hit by a truck and had a bad concussion a couple years ago, it made me feel resentful but therapy helped me get over it. Best wishes and take care.
  • 1 0
Stepping back and taking time to reset and heal is important. But don't let fear govern your choices, which becomes all too easy once you let it take over. Living in Bellingham will be awesome for your recovery. Heal up and get back to living life!!!
  • 1 0
It's so great to hear from you on PB. I checked in on the go fund me updates and was happy to see more insight on your IG page. I was very surprised to now get much update here on PB, but it's understandable. We've all be waiting to hear from you, and I'm super stoked that you're making progress.
  • 1 0
Alicia, I don't know you, but in the short time I've read and watched your work I've really appreciated your fresh and honest opinion on bikes and this sport that we try to make sense of, I really look forward to seeing you return to pinkbike and wish you all the very best.

 Alicia Legend!
  • 1 0
Great to see you posting again! I've been following your recovery and seeing you getting better has helped me deal with some stuff I've been dealing with ever since my younger brother crashed his ATV in November, leading to a small brain bleed and everything that comes with that. Wishing you the best on this road to recovery.
  • 1 0
Props to you for even attempting those jumps, they're mad. Stoked to see you doing well, hope you can get back to doing what you love sooner rather than later, but definitely take your time and take care of yourself. Good luck!
  • 3 0
I remember meeting you a Transcascadia and my impression was "what a humble badass" now I know I was right. thinking of you

Lots of commenters have already said it, but it bears repeating: I'm very glad to be reading this update.

It's strange how you sometimes feel like you relate to people online you've never met, but I was definitely upset to hear Alecia had been badly injured. After spending lots of my time listening to the podcast, reading the articles, and watching videos; I feel strangely protective of the PB staff.

Super happy to hear you're healing up. Without wanting to sound like your mum, don't start working again until you're ready. Everybody else at PB, please be as a careful as you can whilst still having fun riding bikes!
  • 1 0
My niece had a similar experience, touch and go if she would pull through, months in ICU and then brain specialist same as you. It’s a 4 years later now she’s just finishing her medical degree. You women are just incredible sometimes, where I’m just a lazy old oaf.
  • 1 0
Keep the good work Alicia. This is a reminder that MTB can get ugly even when well prepared. That's why is called accident. Myself had a huge slam back in November and injured badly my whole left arm. Couple months already passed and I am very far from just normal use of it......... let alone riding back again.
  • 2 0
I dont read a lot of articles here on PB. Maybe a few lines then go straight to the comments. This one, I read every bit and I'm very glad you're doing better. Looking forward to see you back at full swing here at PB.
  • 3 0
Probably the best article I've ever read. Stunned that you're expecting to get back to normality (or something pretty damn close to it). Take it steady, and all the best!
  • 1 0
Please add my stranger-on-the-internet best wishes for your recovery! I'm looking forward to your review on the helmet, any insights that you've come up with regarding how it worked and any feedback you can include from the manufacturer's perspective! Good luck.
  • 1 0
So very glad you were able to write all of this let alone be here to do so. Keep resting, healing, striving and pushing, you will be where you want to be again. And you do not have to be “religious” at all… we are all in the flock.
  • 1 0
Man, reading this reminds me of the stuff I read, and also heard, from a girl I dated for a few months. She had a massive fall while rock climbing and her brain recovery sounded earily similar.

But, on the plus side, she was recovering remarkably from what I could tell (I didn't know her before the accident). So hopefully Alicia can do the same.
  • 1 0
Alicia, it sounds like you are on your way. Hopefully, you are able to come riding soon. You may find the riding changes as it does for all of us throughout our lives, and I'd venture to say your most rewarding rides are yet to come. All the best to you.
  • 2 0
So happy to see this update from you Alicia! You've been missed and we all look forward to your PB return. I wish you all the best in your continued road to recovery.

This is so good to read! Wishing you nothing but the best in your recovery. I also had a TBI and although the road to recovery is long, you can get back to what you loved to do. Good luck with everything.
  • 1 0
Wishing all the best in your recovery. Don't rush back too quickly.....give that lovely brain time to heal properly. The Pink Bike world loves you, as evidenced by the number of people chiming in.....they'll wait for you.

Reading this after just starting recovery from an injury on a dirt bike is truly inspirational, keep positive and soon I hope you’ll be doing the things you love once again.
Best wishes

This situation will help with becoming more religious after going thru this. I myself spend a good amount of time in hospital from a bicycle wreck & it did for me after seeing complete strangers caring for me.

This brings a very human image to the risks we take as mountain bikers. I do not know Alicia but I wish her the best in her recovery.

That's a really well-written article. It's a good sign in terms of your rate of recovery. Also, your outlook on your accident and your inclination to consider others is just a good sign of character. Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Wow, I am so glad to hear from you again, Alicia! I will be totally honest and admit that I had given up hope when I heard about your condition just after the crash. I am sooo happy I was wrong!! The spirit and and strength that you display in this first piece are amazing and inspiring. I knew you were badass but showing yourself to the world at your most vulnerable moments takes a whole different kind of courage. Thank you. Get well, get better, stay you.
