Video: Ibis Dives into MTB & Trials History with POC Collaboration Apparel

by Ibis Cycles

In the early 1980s, a hippie from Northern California started building pretty blue and purple steel mountain bikes and young trials rider named Andy Grayson helped make them famous.

After winning two consecutive National Observed Trials Championships, Grayson was asked to appear on both the Johnny Carson show and David Letterman show. The latter appearance may or may not have cost him a summer job at a bike shop.

During the appearances, producers asked Grayson to wear a plain T-shirt, but he insisted on wearing his race jersey. The video segment was broadcast to millions of homes across the world and helped launch the brand into the national spotlight.

To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we’ve partnered with Swedish apparel and protection brand POC to create a retro-inspired version of Andy’s iconic jersey and socks. A key sponsor of the Ibis Cycles Enduro World Series team for seven years, POC was an ideal choice for this project

“When we decided to develop performance apparel that paid homage to our racing and brand heritage, POC was our first call” said Tom Morgan, Ibis President. “Our customers have been asking to purchase the team issue POC jerseys for years and we’re happy to make them available for the first time ever.”

Oscar Huss, head of product at POC, added “Ibis have unquestionably led the way in mountain biking. To compare the bikes from forty years ago with what we now ride is incredible. Despite the change in bikes and the industry, Ibis’ focus on innovation and pioneering new ideas has remained constant. It has underpinned our partnership over the years and makes the launch of the anniversary kit even more meaningful and enjoyable.”

Naturally, we asked eleven-time US National MotoTrials Champion Pat Smage to reprise the role of Andy Grayson in this retrospective video. Special thanks to Grayson for lending us his trials bike for the video!

This limited edition jersey is available for purchase though your local Ibis dealer or online at Ibiscycles.com

This is so awesome! Andy was one of my idols growing up and Pat is hands down one of my favorite current riders nowadays. Great job IBIS!

I am disappointed that they skipped over the Bow Ti in the video.

as my 4 year old son would say...."that's not how you climb a tree!"
Seriously though, nice jersey and love the Ibis throwback history. Worked at a shop in the late 90's early 00's, we had a gold Mojo rental that was a favorite for customers.

So rad! I actually know Andy and he’s one of the most mellow people you’ll ever meet plus he’s a ripper.

It would be great is Schwinn was still around as a performance bike company. Lenosky is another one who could ride in his own retrospective video! Those glittery Homegrown frames were mint.

@melanthius: the bass boat paint jobs on the Homegrowns are still my favorite, even today. Schwinn, as a performance company, went out on a high note with those.

@melanthius: found this after commenting and had to repost. Alliance remade the paint job for one of its bikes and now I need it. alliancebicycles.com/1998-schwinn-homegrown-factory-tribute

What a beast! So much talent.
Man, with those proportions, the hardtail segment looks like a circus monkey riding a toy bike. Crazy how things have evolvedSmile

The Ibis carbon bars have aluminum inserts in the ends so you can trim the aluminum down to your desired bar length. The aluminum pieces are now called the Morons

Huh, I was looking at this thinking that guy looked a lot like Pat (and the barn even looked like his too) and then I read it was him.
