PRESS RELEASE: Ibis Cycles

The Ibis Ripmo and Ripley now feature a UDH rear derailleur. To help differentiate them from current models, we’re using the names Ripley V4S and Ripmo V2S. The S stands for swingarm.

The Ripmo is available in Bruce Banner (pictured above) or Endurocell.

Both models receive a new UDH swingarm for maximum future compatibility, and move to a 55mm chainline. They also receive enhanced frame stay protection and upgraded clevis bushings.

The Ripley is available in Drywall or Bad Apple.

The 55mm chainline, which is 3mm wider than the previous standard, allows for a wider and stiffer chainstay. The clevis pivot bushings have more consistent sealing to keep out the grime in even the wettest conditions. Because of these changes the new parts are not backwards compatible.

You can visually identify the new swingarms by the new hanger, as well as the derailleur cable exit port, which has been moved to the top of the stay. The new routing boosts heel clearance and offers improved shifting feel, as it provides a smoother passage to the derailleur.

Our new chainstay protector features thick raised sections to help dampen chain slap noise. It also extends downwards, wrapping under the chainstay. This protects from heel rub and eliminates the metal chainsuck plate.

We’re also replacing our bolt on polycarbonate downtube protector with a new thick rubber guard. It covers a larger area and the increased thickness and softer material better absorbs impacts.

The updated Ripmo and Ripley are available now.

The old logo was one of the best in the business, the new one looks like it belongs on a Costco only brand.

100% Accurate this was such a miss

The charm of their water color manuals, the iconic classic metal head badge, sort of this we don't take ourselves too serious or aren't trying to be edgy (Evil) or Bro-ey (Transition). Their new brand identity/strategy is perfectly generic, it's actually quite remarkable, was it AI generated?
  • 61 3
Nah man. Kirkland Signature logo would look better.
  • 30 2
@cogsci: Yeah, I got the email from Ibis about their rebranding this morning....it's like a marketing robot wrote it...lol. I miss the soul that Ibis used to have...their website and branding were some of my favourite, loved the water colours and I want them to bring back the handjob....haha...

I love the old logo and headbadge too. That's one of the main reasons I was attracted to the brand, but these days we are dealing with legibility on the web, mostly mobile and need to be more obvious. Most people don't realize the logo is a bird and they don't know that an Ibis is a bird, so we're bringing it all together more clearly. The new logo works great with the word side by side so we can use them more easily that way now. We love the old branding and also proudly embrace the confident, modern and stable feel of the new.

@pedalhound: "We also implemented an uppercase IBIS to remind people visually that our company is no longer the soft "i" of interesting, but a proud and strong "I" that embodies the spirit of us as humans. These visuals are better adapted to the complex surfacing of our frames. They look stable and modern, like our bikes."

What the hell...

@hans-heim: Makes sense, but any comment on why the badge is painted now?

I strongly but respectfully disagree. Also TIL that it was a bird and not just a scribble.

Much better than old branding which gave me the impression of a tourist gift shop. Looks like it is from this century and is something that is actually recognizable and comprehensible. The design of the frames is still a mess, but at least they are inching forwards with this design.

Well, I'll stick my neck out and say I'm digging the new logo.

 @tadpoledancer:
I absolutely wanted a badge in the beginning because I associate them with quality, but after over 100 trials of different material's (aluminum, titanium, bronze and nickel plated, we even had the guys that make Aston Martin badges work on a cloisonne version) we ended up feeling that the raised badge felt like it was from the past and the sleek 2 dimensional decal was more modern and integrated.
  • 31 4
@cogsci: curious to hear more on Transition being “bro-ey” and the negative connotation I’m assuming is behind it. I was just up at Galbraith and one of the owners was doing trail work by himself. Fairly certain you’re not going to find many more core bike brands out there.
  • 45 1
@hans-heim: I'm not an Ibis guy, but the one thing I always liked about them was the quality headtube badge. A "sleek 2 dimensional decal" = cheaper to make and it looks it. With bikes all being so good these days, it's details like a quality headtube badge that can sometimes be the thing that brings that extra bit of specialness to a bike that makes someone choose it over another. If I see a quality headtube badge, it makes me think that the brand will put more attention and care into other parts of the frames too (even if they don't).
  • 38 1
I like the colours, and the fonts used on the toptube/downtube, they look bold and fresh indeed. But...

They should have kept the head badge. You don't mess with iconic branding like this. The fact that it got replaced by a decal just cheapens the bike, or dare I say, the brand.

That said, I find the new logo very well designed. But I'd stick with the old one as it carries a lot of history and it is very recognizable among enthusiasts. In fact, if I was about to buy an Ibis right now I'd hold back and see if they change they mind and bring back the old badge.

Dear Ibis, please think again
  • 21 0
I like their old stuff better!

Seriously though- as the owner of a Ripmo 2 and a fan of mechanical [shimano] drivetrains- I'm planning to hold onto my current bike for a while.

I love the headbadge and the old logo, and I hope Ibis realizes their folly.
How long do they have to stick with this new branding before it's cool to 'bring the retro back' ??

I applaud ibis for:
1) not fixing something that isn't broken, just making small tweaks that help with durability and future compatibility.
2) some of the best paint color names in the business. Ibis and Surly really have that locked down.
  • 6 2
@oceanforsurf: I could see people thinking transition is a bro type of bike. I don't see any negative connotation though. I've always liked them because they seem very down to earth. Something a "bro" would ride vs like a $10k eSpecialized a rich dad would be riding.
  • 10 1
Every bike over $3,000 should have a proper head badge. End of. Also, isn't the Ripmo due for a proper refresh? (I like the new colours, though.)
  • 11 8
@DylanH93: Bro-ey has a negative connotation in the context of @cogsci comment. In fact, Transition has to be the most approachable and down-to-earth brand in the industry, hands down. I see the big S as an unapproachable brofest.

Raised head tube badges rip bikepacking bar bags. Flush badges are better.
  • 8 0
@hans-heim: That's what makes the Ibis logo iconic - - - - If you know you know. . . . . . . Besides, One of the most attractive parts of Ibis bikes is the headbadge and it is a shame you don't put them on the new bikes. I have a Moots, V1 Ripmo, and two Scwinns and I love and embrace the head badge on each bike. After seeing all these comments, I'm confident you will bring it back and realize you made a huge mistake.

If they sold 500k Ibis bicycles with a head badge that cost maybe $2/each (material, install, etc), that would cost them $1MM total. Where as they can paint on the head badge for $0. If it were me, I'd paint on a flamingo head badge as well.
  • 5 0
@davidle03: yeah, but following your logic, they can sell them for $10 more with the nicer headtube badge, and actually profit $4M more.

And Ibis ain't selling 500,000 bikes.

Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa and Ibis. All good bird logos. I have a Ripmo AF so I’m partial to the old head tube badge. It’s a badge, not a logo. Either way, still waiting for an updated Mojo that can be the long travel option, akin to SB150 or Megatower or Spire. After all RipMo, is supposed to be a mix of RIPley and MOjo. We need more Mojo.

@hans-heim: as a current owner of a ripmo and many ibis in the past…. I can’t tell you how much this puts me off. I don’t see anyone new buying a ripmo now that wasn’t going to before because of this change. It’s just a mistake and you really should rethink it. Between myself and my riding buddies we have purchased 14 new bikes from your company and we all hate the new logo. As one person said “Looks like the logo for a discount airline out of Singapore”.

Hey Ibis, check the comments on the Knolly prototype article, where they're getting rid of the swoopy top tubes. Ibis bikes would look so much better with a straight top tube. Also, go back to the old logo.
  • 51 11
That top tube is legitimately the only thing keeping me from trying either one of these bikes for years now. Refuse to own a bike that I don't want to look at.

I like the swoopy top tube. Most other brands' bikes all look the same. Glad Ibis is keeping things different. It allows the bikes to fit more people too.
  • 6 0
@carbking: I completely agree!!! Everyone commenting that they want ibis to make their bikes look EXACTLY like every other manufacturer... The swoop took a minute to grow on me when I first got my Ripmo V1 in 2018 but still loving today. On another note, everyone wants them to look the same as other brands with top tube but then holy shit are they harping IBIS for taking logo/ branding into 21st century to match other brands lol.
  • 1 0
@SherlockOoms: not to mention my medium ripmo af has the shortest seat tube on any bike that size cuz of that swoopy seat tube.
  • 53 3
I can't not believe they got rid of the heritage in the brand with this new bizarre bargain bin aesthetic. This is easily the oddest design 180 I've seen in the industry.
  • 49 1
As a professional graphic designer for over 30 years, these types of things always interest me. Logos that last and last are valuable. But then someone gets the bright idea to update it. I often fight hard to keep elements or the vibe of the old logo in the new one. I actually like the headtube badges not being just a sticker, or under the clear water decal. The "cool" bikes always had metal head tube badges. Santa Cruz while simple, looks nice. I wonder why they didn't just do a new metal badge of this new design? I think that's what looks cheap to me now, not so much that they changed it, but that it's just stuck on as a decal.
  • 11 0
 Spot on.
  • 38 3
Considering Ibis gets a lot of hate for their bikes not looking that good, you'd think they would try to make their bikes look better instead of worse. Aside from some nice color schemes on these... This is not a great look... The logo is way off.

Classic black is always "in". Trendy pastels look horrible. Almost bought a Ripmo last year but couldn't stand the colors. When all my bikes are black or raw aluminum my wife can't keep track.

Agreed on the logo, the prior one was iconic. I think they nailed the colors though.
  • 26 1
It looks like a cheapening of the brand. Ibis is a boutique brand, they should embrace it.

IF it takes 3 paragraphs in the newsletter to explain the logo, then they missed the mark. It's a reach, and the outcome of someone who doesn't understand brand value and is more interested in flexing everything they just learned last semester before they graduated with an art/marketing degree.

Grats Ibis, welcome to the commodified race to the bottom of branding.

AF bikes are on sale now too, so they are probably getting a refresh too. Unfortunately the AF bikes aren't the same amazing value as when they released. No I don't want a Marzocchi coil fork over DVO.

Boring new colors and logo? Check. Marketing spiel? Check.

On the bright side, looks like there is no reason to "upgrade" from my V4 Ripley.
  • 17 0
Honesty from a current Ibis owner:
I don't like the logo change, it's flat and sterile. (No problem with the frame colors) I'm willing to let it marinate for awhile and circle back, but my initial response is no thank you. The raised head badge on my Ripley looks better every time I wipe the mud off it. Its classic and befitting of a well made bike. The verbiage in the email sent by Ibis this morning made me feel like I was sitting in on a marketing pitch deck for a startup company.

"Uppercase IBIS to remind people visually that our company is no longer the soft "i" of interesting, but a proud and strong "I" that embodies the spirit of us as humans."

Really? Come on, I didn't know Ibis was suffering from an inferiority complex.
Your company logo is "WORK LESS, RIDE MORE" This is suppose to be FUN! You don't have to spell out a new identity, we know your heritage, and what Ibis stands for. Guess what? Most people dig it, I know I do.
  • 19 2
I hate the new logo. I agree, it looks like something seen on a bike sold at Costco. Hey Ibis, your focus group got it wrong on the new logo. I will now always look at the old logo on my DV9 and think of what once was.
  • 17 1
From the design standpoint, the new logo is not *bad*, imo. I think the main issue is that it's painted, rather than an actual head badge.
  • 9 0
Exactly! Paint decals don’t belong on premium bikes. Then you might as well remove it like Arrival.
  • 11 0
I have been waiting for Ripley update, possibly my next bike, but am also disappointed by the “update”…
Nobody mentioned the new chainline - in my opinion a bad decision… Unfortunately new bikes are going this direction, I tested the new Scott Spark which also has this 55mm chainline and when climbing in the easiest gears the chain angle is brutal Frown
  • 3 2
Agreed - i've also owned a 55mm chainline bike and actually got rid of it because of it. It make an audible grind when climbing and feels substantially less efficient.
  • 2 0
I can't imagine climbing with a 55mm chain line! On the Kavenz you can switch between a 49mm, 50.5mm and 52mm chain line . Through experimentation I found my preference with the 50.5mm - great for climbing and descending.
  • 1 0
Agreed. This is a considerable downgrade.
  • 15 0
My V2 wants those updated protection pieces real bad.
  • 3 0
That is the truth. I have the Ripley V3 and those little rubber strips don't do jack. I am sad to say that based on this refresh my next bike will most likely not be an Ibis.
  • 3 1
The new chainstay protection looks a lot like the bodge I made out of mastic tape on mine because the stock protection was nonexistent. Ibis said in an email that the new downtube protection will be backwards compatible - at least for the Ripmo - but it'll be a while before it's available in the store.
  • 1 0
@rcrocha: I wish that they had those protection pieces available to buy for older ibis bikes too.
  • 3 0
I figured every Ripmo AF owner has their drive side chainstay wrapped in foam and tape. Just me?
  • 1 0
@VtVolk: I got their free protection package for my RAF that they offer by request, but I didn't bother installing the chain stay protector. My mastic creation on the chain stay is 10x better. I do like the DT protector that came in the kit though!
  • 2 0
@mammal: could you explain how this works, I have a RAF too, and this sounds like it would be helpful.

Think a quality head badge on a bike gives it, at least a look, that it’s something special even if it’s not, a bit like the spirit f ecstasy on the front of a rolls Royce.

My old intense has the metal head badge and when you look at it, it’s classy.

Yikes! 2 for 59 with positive comments from Pinkers. Ibis marketing department might be a somber place today...
  • 17 1
This is PIinkbike. I'd say that is a B+ grading on the curve.
  • 9 1
EWS Team: "Hey can we get a proper Enduro bike so that we can compete on the world stage next year?"

Ibis: "Ok, we are updating somethings on your current rig which you will not notice and you'll a have a new bird on your jersey that will make you fly even faster."

EWS Team: "Hmmmm....wtf"
  • 3 0
I can imagine the team being disappointed, but it doesn't really make sense to turn the Ripmo into a full on enduro sled. It's been so hugely successful because it's pretty capable while being fun to pedal in more mellow terrain. Moving the geo closer to what's the current enduro trend would make it a really different bike and less appealing to a lot of folks. What they really need to do if they want to race at the sharp end is bring back the Mojo HD as a true EWS bike and leave the Ripmo in its successful middle ground segment.
  • 2 0
Though also to be fair, they did have riders taking 7th in the Women's and 13th in the Men's EWS and had similar (but slightly higher) results the year before. It's not as if the bike can't be ridden competitively at that level, though I know the EWS riders are tweaking it to make it approximate more of a long travel bike.
  • 1 0
They have been very competitive on the Ripmo. Wasn’t a Ripmo ridden to a top 5 finish at EWS Whistler this year?
  • 2 0
@dualsuspensiondave: Lucas Cole was 6th, but the point is the same. Whistler is one of the most DH like tracks and it didn't seem to hold him back much.
  • 11 1
New logo lacks soul. I'm not usually looking at the logo while riding though. And my Ripley rides like nothing else.
  • 13 2
I like the Bruce Banner color scheme.
  • 11 0
Let my Ibis do the job
  • 11 3
I was hoping for a storage compartment in the new Ripmo and Ripley version. I'm a little disappointed ..And the logo no comment..
  • 2 0
Yes, was really hoping in-frame storage and more utility out of the frame in general. Only room for one small (maybe full-size) water bottle and no top-tube tool bag bosses is disappointing for the Ripmo.
  • 1 0
It’sa cheap update just changing the rear triangle rather than the whole frame.
  • 2 0
@sierrasurf: You can get the porkchop bag for the Ripmo which should serve the same purpose as the top tube bag.
  • 1 0
That would have been an improvement that people would have noticed. I'm not sure a change in the chainline is anything that you'd be aware of whilst riding...
  • 3 0
@sierrasurf: the pork chop looks dumb, but it works amazingly well. I now ride pack free. I fit an extra Gatorade or beer in there plus some snacks, money and a tool. Frame storage is a nifty idea but a pain in the ass to access multiple times a ride. Especially compared to something thats accessible while climbing.
  • 13 6
Wow, I'm clearly in the minority here, but I actually like the new logo and wordmark. And that black and bronze color scheme is gorgeous. Still don't like the top tube, though.
  • 13 4
Jeezus that new logo is the worst thing ive seen in a while...
  • 9 0
new logo head tube badge is unfortunate
  • 4 0
Was hoping for suspension kinematics updates and a steeper seat tube angle. DW Link needs a lot more progression. I had to run max volume spacers before getting the Cascade Link and I'm not heavy at 175lbs on a size Large. It pedals like a dream but I'll probably be going back to Horst Link for my next bike.

Also the new logo sucks. Why get rid of the gold badge? Oh right to save 8 grams.
  • 5 0
Ah, the Ibis, a bird so elegant that Australian’s refer to it as a “bin chicken”.

They even have a song dedicated to this wonderful creature.

youtu.be/9sBXcZ0G_ls (NSFW)
  • 7 0
The death of head badges makes me sad, just such a nice touch to a bike.
  • 3 0
I recently sold my V2 to go mullet (glad I did as a shorter rider) but had concerns that right afterwards Ibis may come out with a more versatile set of bikes e.g., mullet/longer travel or say a flip chip and I'd be missing out. Nope! Concerns mitigated.
  • 3 2
Well there is no Mojo HD in their lineup right now...

I'm still on the lookout for a proper mullet / enduro bike from Ibis within the next year.
I don't plan to buy it- but I think it's coming.

Still, you can't plan your riding season around a bike that doesn't exist. Enjoy your new setup and don't look back!
  • 2 0
Still no new Ripmo AF... maybe that will be the new hotness again?
  • 2 0
@basic-ti-hardtail: i own a HD3 - its pretty much a ripmo 27.5 - little steeper head tube- little shorter chain stays. Incredibly fun bike here on the shore - a hd4 is the same head tube angle I believe.
  • 7 0
At least they made the chainstay protection better. Was much needed
  • 3 0
I bought one of the old V2s on discount. I expected a bit of new bike envy, that I was happy to assuage with the discount I got as they cleared stock.

Well...there isn't much envy going on. I'd be happy to have the UDH and the new chainstay protector, but nothing appears to have changed to make the bike more exciting and I probably like the color scheme/logo on the old one better.
  • 5 0
I've made an official decision: Most mountain bikers have terrible taste aesthetically, which is why we see such horrible aesthetic decisions by mtb companies.
  • 1 0
Gold star. 100% correct. And Ibis isn’t even close to the worst offender.
  • 4 1
Why does Ibis care if we know their logo is a bird or not? I have a v1 Ripmo, I know an Ibis is a bird but I never made the connection that the head badge was a bird. I still don’t see it.
I am in the market for a new bike and this just doesn’t hit right. Looks like Revel will be getting my money this time.
  • 5 0
Revel is probably about to update the rascal and ranger chief just fyi
  • 1 0
@norcalbike: That's the update I'm waiting for. My current Rascal is glorious, but I wouldn't mind a new color and some other minor tweaks.
  • 6 0
Top tube says Ripmo Ibis, chainstay says Ibis Ripmo. My OCD says WTF.
  • 6 1
Hey have ya'll ever heard this song? Never ridden the bikes but...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO-OpFjHRbE
  • 3 0
I think it looks fine, the bike is what matters not the logo and it looks like some nice improvements. I spend more time riding my bike than looking at it. Like the black and green Ripmo colors.
  • 2 0
Hans, Call back the Aston guys. They have got to be able to make a head badge out of the new logo. Dig the new colors. That drywall color is sick. While we are on the topic of colors… any chance we can get an AF in actual raw? I was a bit bummed to discover its actually silver when I went to pick mine up. Proves your point about missing details when looking at pics on your phone.

$3699 msrp same. V2 "on sale" now for 20% less which is msrp pre-pandemic.
  • 1 0
Was $3499 pre pandemic with the Float X2, but I feel ya.
  • 3 0
They should have taken the opportunity to tweak the geo on the Ripmo. I would consider buying one if the HT was a touch slacker and the ST a touch steeper. Oh and size-specific chainstays would have been nice too.
  • 2 0
They have to have something to sell you next year!
  • 2 0
@haen: lol - true! A successful career in marketing awaits you.
  • 2 0
Getting ready for the new sram integrated derailleur hanger thing I guess. I wonder if sram will offer normaI derailleurs alongside the new ones, seeing as most brands seem to be updating to udh. Also miss metal headbadges. Yes, they’re a bit heavier, but they look so good.
  • 6 0
RIP headbadge. It's a sad day.
  • 2 0
Don't mind the new logo but paint on is super lame compared to the bolt on badge. I have wanted to like Ibis for years but their industrial design has never done it for me. Simple in a boring way rather than a good way. If I'm spending lots of money on a bike I'd like it to look exciting.
  • 2 0
Another step forward for Ibis would be a lifetime warranty. I think the ripley/ripmo look better in person. But look uglier in the XL size for some reason/the seat tube/top tube area looks funky in the xl sizes. I agree that a longer travel 29er is in order. I do dig all of the updates/UDH/burlier chainstay protection and down tube protection. I do think frame storage would be cool. I understand the logo change, with everyone on their phones these days, that logo will be distinguishable even in the smallest of spaces and will work well in many applications.
  • 2 0
As long as they were updating the swing arm, it would have been nice to make the chainstay lengths size specific. I'd love to buy a Ripmo if only it had longer chainstays in size XL, but as it is, it is way too short for my preference.
  • 4 2
Why do these bikes look 15 years old... looking exactly like a 2009 specialized big hit. The swoopy top tup and shock placement is just not doing it. Also the stats printed on the down tube... yikes
  • 1 0
Always amazes me how much branding and visual identify brings out peoples passions. If you don’t like it turn away, or maybe focus on the performance.

I did notice replacement head badges are sold out. Hoping us ibis owners will always be able to cop a old awkwardly swoopy metal badge.
  • 1 0
I owned and loved a Mojo SL. Now that was a great looking bike and head badge. Ever since the frames of every brand changed to allow a steeper seat tube, they just don't look as nice. I know the new geo's are here to stay and I should just get used to it, but style wise, things were better in the olden days.
  • 4 0
What about longer slacker and lower? Everyone wants a dh bike for trail duty rite?
  • 5 1
So the chainring now sits where compared to the casette? How much is the chain twisting when in lowest gear?
  • 5 0
I Remember When Ibis Had Cool Head Badges®.
  • 9 7
A lot of people have a lot of random microgrievances with a company whose bike they dont plan on owning?!? I am more surprised the bike geo stayed identical after so long than anything else
  • 12 1
Not really true for many of us I would think. I was really looking forward to updates to these two bikes and WAS absolutely in the market for an updated Ibis if the updates were what I was looking for.

I own a Ripley V4. I was looking for at least the AF's HTA, longer chainstays on the larger sizes, in-frame storage and really would have loved it to come stock with a 140mm fork (ability to run up to 150mm) and ideally a bump to 130mm-ish rear travel with a move to the Float X. The DPS really holds this bike back.

I know of at least 3 people that were holding out for what Ibis was going to release this year, all 3 of them just crossed a new Ibis bike off their lists thanks to the info in this article.
  • 4 1
@FrankS29: yup, lotta folks around here going stumpy instead of ripley for that reason. Shame. Loved my Ripley, but wanted a bit more DH capability.
  • 2 1
@dmondave: My Ripley V4 was recently replaced with a Stumpjumper Evo. I absolutely love the SJ Evo and the SWAT system is awesome.

The Ripley is a fantastic bike, but in this form, it's simply getting left behind by other bikes.
  • 2 0
@FrankS29: Why not run a 140mm 36 with a dpx2 on the Ripley? I really liked mine setup that way. Popped even better and handled rough terrain much better.
  • 3 0
@dualsuspensiondave: I had mine set up with a DVO Diamond and Topaz T3. It did make it a lot more capable, but at the end of the day it still was running a 120mm chassis and it was still too easy to find the limits of the bike.

My new SJ Evo really opened up my eyes as to how good modern, bigger trail bikes are now. They can rip tamer trails without issue and handle faster and rowdy descents much better than the Ripley dream of.
  • 2 0
@FrankS29: why increase the rear travel?

It's perfectly fine the way it is.

HTA: agree. (but don't care much at the same time, after having elongated the fork to 140mm)
  • 9 0
@FrankS29: stumpy evo is in the same category as the Ripmo. Not sure why you’re comparing it to the Ripley.
  • 3 3
@norcalbike: Because it's the bike I purchased that ended up replacing my Ripley...

Not being in the "same category", the SJ Evo actually performs extremely well in a lot of the situations that the Ripley is supposed to be better in. Some of them the Evo is actually better, especially technical climbing.

I actually purchased my SJ Evo with the intent of running both bikes. But after riding them back-to-back for a bit, I realized the SJ Evo did too many things just as well as the Ripley to even bother having both.

This is why I say bikes like the Ripley are getting left behind. Bikes that on the surface look like they are just big bruisers, are actually eating the lunch of many shorter travel bikes in their own categories, all while being able to descend far better.
  • 5 3
@FrankS29: race XC on your stumpy evo vs Ripley and get back to me about comparing them.

Obviously it’s going to descend better. You’d be singing the same praises of the Ripmo. Doesn’t make it a good comparison.
  • 5 2
@norcalbike: Racing XC isn’t the Ripley’s category, that’s the Exie.

Why would you compare those 2 things?

See how this works?

You asked me why I compared the two bikes, I told you my personal reason. For my riding and my experience, it’s a perfectly acceptable comparison as they are the two bikes I own and have ridden them both on the same trails.
  • 2 0
 @FrankS29: this 1000%
  • 2 0
@FrankS29: I understand completely. Ended up replacing my v4 Ripley with a v2 Ripmo. Almost pulled the trigger on that SJ Evo, but I love how well the Ripmo climbs.
  • 2 0
@FrankS29: I also replaced my Ripley for a Ripmo. Just saying that it’s way more towards the XC side of the trail spectrum, while Ripmo is aggressive trail bleeding into enduro/all mountain.
  • 1 0
@norcalbike: agree, current Ripley has nearly same geo/travel as the latest Scott Spark, just a bit heavier. 1 deg slacker + more rear progression (and maybe +10mm, too) and it'd be sweet. Loved the feel but wanted a bit more stability, so i got a flex-stay stumpy.
  • 2 0
Back in the 60's we argued about the hood ornament on my Triumph TR3. Was a stupid argument. I wash my DV9 and admire the lines, the carbon layup, the weight. Hardly even look at the logo in the front.
  • 2 1
Busy patting themselves on the back like an episode of "The Real Lives of New York City Marketing Firms"

"So many incredible people to thank for helping us pull this off! Tom Morgan with the beautiful paint and graphic implementation, Scott Bellicitti spent months in the photo studio and helping with soft goods, Paul Shand who helped a million different ways! From doing photoshop work to building out the beautiful new website. Tuan Diep for reimagining all out our promotional materials, technical documentation, manuals, etc. And Lear Miller Weddings for all the incredible outdoor imagery. I can’t forget NATE TRUMBLE who helped build and rebuild and build every single bicycle we photographed. "

So many wonderful people contributed to make this possible! Everyone from sales, to production, engineering, purchasing, etc. It takes a team and we’re lucky to have one of the best. Thank you Hans Heim, Tom Morgan, and Scot Nicol for helping to bring us all together.

I dig it, especially since it spells IBIS with the S being the neck and head. Love little Easter eggs like that, I just wish it was metal.
  • 3 0
Metal head badge changed cuz all the people on the Ripmo Owners FB page complaining about cutting weight on their Ripmos

Maybe SRAM will force more manufacturers over to the UDH with the threat of a unique rear derailleur. Learning from Shimano. How many "standards" do we have because Shimano says so?
  • 5 1
Any word on fixing the design so it doesn't destroy shocks?
  • 2 1
if you're running the latest X2, it's not the design the problem but the shock
  • 2 0
Dont mind the new logo but wth has wrong with the old logo? Looked cool IMO. And not a fan of "IBIS" plastered throughout the bike frame.
  • 1 1
Just been notified that Ibis will not warranty my second frame that has cracked under the downtube guard. 43 months, over £4K spent on the two frames.
I know some others have had their frames crack in the same place. The press release yesterday mentions increased protection in this area.

“We’re also replacing our bolt on polycarbonate downtube protector with a new thick rubber guard. It covers a larger area and the increased thickness and softer material better absorbs impacts”

It’s crap to find out the day after they announce increased protection they are washing their hands of mine.
  • 2 0
If they are almost the price of a car, why do you get rid of the metal badged?! Sad.
  • 2 0
Missed opportunity for longer travel and superboost on the ripmo just like all the other DW link bikes.
  • 1 0
Yeah but if you put a superboost chainline on a boost bike you get to sell more chains, cassettes, and chainrings! Sram MTB wide innovations! Plus you don't get all the people angry about having to buy a new hub. They just have to buy new drive-trains twice as often instead. So much money saved on the wheelset!
  • 2 0
Let my Ibis do the job! I can't think of anything else - 0:35 www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DkUMyi3Mxg
  • 3 0
Exie still has the badge, I love mine.
  • 3 2
They ditched the scalloped graphics on the side which is a nice improvement. The DW link logo is still derpy looking though. Otherwise, looks nice.
  • 3 1
The only Ibis update news we came here for was an announcement of a new top tube. Sadly disappointed.
  • 3 0
Increased Downtube protection far too late. guess how I know.
  • 4 1
The top tube is just so ugly though.
  • 3 0
I know they're great bikes but I just can't get myself to like the looks.
  • 3 0
Just like that, we now all have a vintage Ibis head badge!
  • 1 1
I still don't understand why they spec 175mm cranks on L and XL, I am on a L Transition with 165mm that I love, less pedal strikes and can spin faster circles which helps with acceleration on the downs.
  • 1 0
I have a new (well now old) V2 that just arrived today. The biggest component change I'd have liked to have made was to shorter cranks. But as 165s and smaller are fairly hard to find at the moment, I'll likely just ride the 175s and forget about them.
  • 2 1
No frame storage and they want money for this bike? Like I'm gonna stuff my pockets with tater tots lol. This is why we pay the Santa Cruz tax.
  • 2 1
Looking good Ibis! Change is always met with resistance. Weight weenies are excited to save .0001 gram with head badge being a sticker now.
  • 3 0
No headtube badge to save an extra 30 cents per frame?
  • 1 0
Why are chain lines getting wider? This makes the easier gears where most spend their time the most stressful on the drivetrain.
  • 2 0
Brands love killing their character for the sake of being modern. Fitting in does not differentiate your brand.
  • 3 0
 Go home Ibis you're drunk.
  • 1 1
Was thinking about ordering a new Ripley until i saw that revised headtube decal.

Nope. Looks cheap as hell, makes me question the quality of the new frame and ask myself what else did they "streamline."
  • 1 0
Ibis logo head badge WAS awesome. They would have been better off leaving head tube black, and giving you free crayons to make your own.
  • 3 1
Looks like the Ripley AF got the update as well.
  • 2 1
This is a total fail on my part. I own a ripmo and I had no idea what the logo was until they changed it. SMH
  • 5 0
Exactly the reason the brand logo got updated.

When I think Ibis (and now sadly remember), what comes to mind was cool bikes like Hakkalugi (with a Handjob hanger!) MoJo, SilkTi, BowTi, Ripley, Tranny… I owned and loved a few of these bikes with names only a mountain bike company could get away with. But now, no more… go woke, go broke.

Quietly dropping a new logo? I like it, hope new bikes will get less swoopy as well
  • 6 8
New logo is a miss, but it did need to be updated (don't listen to the people who's style consists of attire that resembles a 90's motocross kit). The new black and copper is really nice, along with the white/chalk. The real problem here is the overall form of the front triangle. I have a Ripmo, but I'm selling it because when I turn around after a right to look at it I feel nothing. The industrial design needs a complete overhaul. Other bikes are climbing just as well and descending better. Ibis, you have the opportunity for the V4 to really take on the competition. You have the love of the community, you just need a better editing eye.
  • 5 0
Also, high end brands should spec badges. If your logo is important then make it a badge. Great design and brand experiences are all about little moments of theatricality.
  • 2 1
They still look like the excellent but ugly bikes they have been for a while
  • 6 8
What the Ripmo needed was 25mm more Reach, 1.5° slacker HTA, 2° steeper STA and 20mm more travel front and rear.

What it got instead is some new frame colors and a new logo.

Bravo, Ibis. Outstanding. And while you're at it, don't you want to rise those prices some more? Perhaps another $500 increase?
  • 8 0
I think what you describe is a different bike, a full-on enduro sled, not the very versatile trail bike that the Ripmo is trying to be. You could argue that Ibis needs such a bike, but the Ripmo is fine as it is.

  • 1 0
@mammal: I purely mean logo design- a metal badge would definitely be better.
  • 1 1
@ianblenden: I still disagree, so two reasons why I don't like the change.
  • 1 0
@ianblenden: They could have made it out of aluminum and laser cut out the logo. I think that would have looked good.
  • 2 3
Yeah I like the logo a lot actually, the old one was horrible. Not sold on the downtube text but aesthetically I think it's a step up. Was really hoping they'd straighten out that top tube and slack it a touch but oh well... performance-wise it's probably a great bike for me, but every time I see the silhouette it really turns me off.

 Whoa, rebrand alert!!! Nice logo.
