In for the Kill: Finals - Leogang DH World Cup 2016

Jun 13, 2016
by Nathan Hughes

Just when you think you've seen the fastest it's possible to go through a section, the quickest run you could imagine down a track, there'll be someone to come along and blow it to smithereens. At the world cup it happens every time. The sea of talent is a deep one right now in downhill racing and it only gets deeper and more cut-throat every season that goes by.

Two riders are more capable of slicing clean through the field right now than any others, in a clearly defined and downright murderous league of their own... Of course, we speak of the one and only Rachel Atherton; today riding to her 10th back-to-back victory and a grand total of 30 career wins and in the men's it's, 3-time series winner, Aaron Gwin who ticked off the Leogang hat-trick. For the umpteenth time, the Californian unleashed the beast on the rest of the pack and somehow emerged multiple seconds out in front.

After days of rigorous mud prep and sleepless nights thanks to a faulty weather forecast, the course continued to dry fast over race day, but it never quite seemed to get there. The majority of top-flight riders, unable to adapt, were left scratching their heads in the mixed up conditions and with the kind of result they'd rather forget. The level continues to soar and those who can't learn to fly quick enough are simply snatched up and dashed against the rocks by the ferocious competition. Must be why it's all so damn good to watch.

Somehow the evil weather stayed away throughout finals for all categories, instead hovering across the valley above those famous Leogang peaks.

Thi is how the day started and with heavy rain having fallen overnight we were not feeling to optimistic.

Gaetan Vige is already showing, shall we say, 'flashes of Thirion'. With today's win, he's now jumped up to second in the junior class.

bigquotesThe race was very technical and too muddy for me, but I am very happy because I still managed to take the win.. I did two big mistakes, but I got away with it! The track was still very wet for the juniors, but in the end, I am happy because perhaps in the dry I would not have been so good. I am second in the overall right now, I was third before. Hopefully I can have some more wins and be in the fight this season - Gaetan Vige

Good sportsmanship between two rivals. It s good to see competition and camaraderie even at a young age on the WC tour.

Ten consecutive wins and now a grand career total of 30 victories, Rachel Atherton's prolific record grew one further this afternoon in the Leogang mud.

bigquotes I always said whichever 30 comes first; age or wins I'll retire! I didn't really start out to ever get so many wins, you kind of get on with it and it ticks away I guess. Suddenly, at 28, I was like 'sh*t no way... I think I can win 30 here' and then you do it and it's pretty mad. Maybe next I'll learn whips or no-handers or something ha! Tracey can do one-handers and Manon can do no-handers so there we go haha... I was really nervous this morning because I thought I might do something stupid like crash, you know, every race now I am bound to do something wrong! I had a bit of a wild run, a few moments here and there. It's been really hard all week, so wet in the morning practice for us. We were on the track at 8 am and it's so hard... I thinks the girls had it harder than anyone with the conditions for sure - Rachel Atherton

Congrats on a job well done.

Kinda wet, kinda dry... the theme of the race.

bigquotes It was so sick today, the track dried out so much and I was just thinking it's a timed run like in Friday's practice. In the back of my mind I was like 'it's gonna be dry so just go, go, go... just go for it and don't be scared'. I attacked the whole way down and went as fast as I could... no regrets! I was just having fun out there, doing all I could and hung it out, trying to get back to my old ways of last year. The season is getting on and on and I'm getting faster - Troy Brosnan

What a weekend for Loris Vergier. Fastest at the first two splits and of so close to taking his first WC win today. We re sure his teammate Loic Bruni wishes he was here to celebrate tonight.

bigquotes This morning was rainy and sketchy to ride, I didn't like it very much, but this afternoon was just insane, the track was looking good. I pushed a little bit and it was so great to ride, I enjoyed it. Finally I got second so I am just stoked and it's just a good day bro, insane! We rode on Friday in the dry so I put my mind into dry mode. I think I pushed as much as possible, it was almost perfect... Aaron Gwin is just crazy fast so I don't care, I am just so happy to be second and for the moment I keep it cool with my expectations. It was so funny to follow Ratboy in the quali, maybe one day I will do it again. It helped a little bit for sure! - Loris Vergier

bigquotesThere was more pedalling this time than last year, that's for sure! I really hammered the middle and the bottom because I rolled the top good, but it felt kind of steady. I was trying to be smooth, but slowed down a little too much and started making little mistakes. I hit the middle after getting through the roots still alive, so I thought I have to make it happen and put the hammer down. I didn't know any times, but I saw Loris in the first turn and he kinda ripped that thing to pieces so I thought I wish I wouldn't have seen that haha... I never really like to know how the others do because I want to try to have my best run and call it a day. So thankfully it was enough man! I was game-planning for wet conditions not for dry, but I am always stoked when it dries out because I guess it suits me a little bit better. We kind of guessed with the settings for suspension and the Fox guys did a great job and my bike felt really good. It was a bit difficult because the holes were really big and it was very windy at the top, so that dried the track out even more. I could have been a little more aggressive I think, but it's all good! - Aaron Gwin

The onza shorty does it again!
  • 30 3
"Hello Maxxis, this is Onza, we would like to order some more Shortys but blacked out please."
I don't know but Onzas sponsorship didn't pay off so far but that's not something Maxxis is unhappy about.
  • 38 0
@kazwei: They're all made by CST (Cheng Shin Tire) anyway, so its all good!
  • 11 0
weirdly Onza's instagram had a pic of Gwin's bike, all full of promise (and hashtags) for the race.. would love to know what's going on with that partnership.
  • 6 2
@KNSGTI: Onza is a different company, CST just produce the tires for them but don't own Onza. So I would say it's not all good. If you as a company sponsor a (freaking fast) rider and he's winning on tires of the company that produces your tires I would a) think about my tires b) be pissed off c) develop something similar and competitive
  • 25 0
 Gwin LOVES Onza.......on his Jeffsy.
  • 3 2
@kazwei: exactly. This is surely nothing but an ongoing embarrassment for Onza. I'm speculating here but If there's a clause in that contract that states the rider is able to choose a competitors product for race duties and only have a developmental role for the company paying for that riders name then... he's a clever business man! His winning only proves one thing, he's NOT winning on Onza. The adverts even proclaim "Gwin chooses Onza" Not the last time I checked! Oh dear. I'm sure a long game is being played here but it's a weird one so far, from what I understand Onza make some great rubber-here's hoping a Gwin model comes out... and, for that company's sake that he isn't seen winning on blacked out shortys after that point..
  • 4 1
@kazwei: meh.....I'm sure they have some deal worked out, besides I never said CST owns Onza, CST makes a majority of the rubber that everyone is riding on. I'm sure we'll see some tire in the near future branded Onza, that will look like a Maxxis/Butcher/Bontrager.
  • 6 0
cept this time it was the Onza DHR II
  • 2 0
 That wind tunnel sure works!
  • 19 0
Meh, this is all nothing new. I remember when the Athertons were sponsored by Continental and they were running blacked out Maxxis tires for ages. Product R&D is time consuming and I'm sure they're working with Gwin on making tires to his preference, but there's still races to be raced (and won) in the meantime.
  • 4 0
@ScandiumRider: oh yeah its not new right enough-Tomac and others on painted Intense's riding for Giant to name one other example. Its just a weird predicament amongst adverts claiming he uses one brand etc
  • 2 1
I ride the Onza XC tires on my XC race rig, and they're pretty damn good. Low rolling resistance, edge knobs you can trust, high-volume, reasonable weight, durable sidewalls (for an XC tire).
  • 9 0
They must have paid Gwin too much... they cant afford to pay for their website anymore www.onzatires.com
  • 2 1
Without looking at pictures in detail I assumed Gwin actually rode onza in this race as he mentioned tires in his winning interview in regards to how everything went great with his setup after lots of work and pondering.
  • 1 0
@feeblesmith: you'd think so eh. The YT mob video from Leogang that just appeared shows him in the rear of his race truck literally surrounded by dozens of box fresh labled Maxxis tyres.. not an Onza to be seen.
  • 1 0
 @nzobust: yikes, thats bad-real bad
  • 3 0
Not as bad as when the Kenda/Morewood team pit photo showed Rennies bike with DHFs
  • 1 0
Clearly they are doing a similar deal to the Athertons and continental a few years back. Athertons were allowed to run blacked out Maxxis whilst they developed a tyre range together.
  • 53 1
Watching Loris and Troy come down I was pretty sure I was watching the winning runs... But then Gwin came down and absolutely destroyed them - such a mental standard of racing and like Claudio said, a real demonstration to everyone else on Gwin's part!
  • 5 1
Love muddy black and white shots!
  • 9 1
So unspectacular, yet so effective! Gwin was really in a league of its own.
  • 7 0
Looking at the splits was unreal.... as Claudio said, Gwin made up nearly 5 seconds just on the 2nd half of the course (if I remember correctly). Just amazing how he finds so much time everywhere.
  • 5 0
I thought it was pretty spectacular actually... pretty rare to see someone down by over a second at the first split and then gain back that much time. He was attacking super hard in the middle.
  • 2 1
@scriz: Yeah he was attacking hard no doubt but he didn't look anywhere near as loose or exciting as some of the others (Fearon, cough cough) but just had pure, unadulterated speed and technique - not a bad thing, just an observation..
  • 43 0
"...trying to be smooth, but slowed down too much and started making little mistakes." I think Gwins' idea of slow is somewhere around transonic speed.
  • 28 2
It won't be long , perhaps next season, that Aaron will amass more wins (16 already) than Greg. And being that the top dogs are getting up in age, he will most likely go on to have perhaps as many as 30+ wins over the life of his career, baring any injury. We may not see anyone for a long, long time come close to Aaron's run of dominance.
  • 4 0
Anyone knows for how long he has contract with YT? I think it was 3 years, but I don't really remember

Great coverage as always PB! Was stoked to see Gwin take the win. He rode like a man possesed. I was certain Troy or Loris had it locked up before he came down.
  • 8 0
Poor Troy. I thought his run was banger.
  • 13 0
 That scrub though... 'mazing.
  • 11 2
Loris has an amazing style, he rides so beatifully, everything dialled, smooth yet powrful. Similar to Minnaar but more aggressive. Then Minnaar is just incredible with smoothness, the way he rolled through that rooty open section as if holes were half the size. And Gwin... Yea. Pure speed and railing everything so perfectly that it almost looks boring. Amazing. Thanks for coverage Pinkbike, that pic of Rachel coming from behind that tree -Wow!

Agreed. The only other shot I'm holding out for is Connor Fearon scrubbing the built-up drop at the end of Sector 2 - if that shot isn't already a large print poster in Kona HQ, it should be.

Never have I seen Minnaar have so many mistakes and still ha managed 5th. Not bad, but, had it been a typical Greg run, well, we'll never know. - Gwin is becoming the Rachel Atherton of the men! .
  • 7 1
I was thinking Rachel killed the comp and then Gwin showed us what total domination looks like. Beating these guys by 3 seconds is MURDERRRR!!!! I feel bad for these top tier guys that thought they had stellar runs just to get destroyed. It must be so discouraging.
  • 6 0
Danny is having a great year. Impressed with it. He's shown flashes but the consistency is good to see. Gwin is gonna be tough to catch if he keeps this up though. Dude is in full beast mode. Making YT look smart for spending that dough. Specialized is just crossing their fingers that Brosnan can hold on to second for now... but with Bruni right there Greg... danny... this is a good year. Definitely missing Chainsaw because I have a feeling he was gonna be pushing for podiums all year. Woulda been the best season in a long time.
  • 6 0
So stoked for Loris and Danny! Gwin is probably used to winning by now haha. A bit sad that Brendog wasn't able to pull it out for his race run. Cant wait for the day when Brendog pulls a podium or even a win!

bruni must just be "loving" his time off...
anyone else think he is just going crazy watching his team mates (vergier, iles) just crush it...
his rivals (brosnon, hart, minnaar) really stepping up...
and his nemisis (gwin) continues at another level...
not too much motvation, huh...?
  • 2 0
 even more motivation!
  • 4 1
They really need a new colour commentator to pair up with Rob. Someone can spit out a sentence in less than five seconds, don't whinge, and says something other than 'oh he made a mistake,' 'that was a mistake' and perhaps brings some excitement and context to the proceedings!

Realistically not everyone is here to be #1 - there are some fantastic results and great narratives and stories of riders that seem to get bypassed because all Claudio can talk about is who will be #1.

I find it interesting.. more often than not he's right. Hearing the pros and cons of each line choice is way better than some glossed over commentating. You can kind of apply the knowledge yo your own riding too.

@Joebro1995: He does have his moment, but they're becoming increasingly rare. Not to mention he was wrong several times on the weekend, and left eating humble pie, particularly where he kept bagging on riders taking the outside line, which ended up being the fastest.

There is a lot to like about Claudio but I think there are much better colour commentators out there.

@Pennyrisk: As long as theres a technical expert on the team I'm cool with that. Nothings worse than 2 white washed commentators who dont provide insight

Its not about being liked its about being a good racer... I guess you can like or not like someones stle of riding... but judging someone as a person when you have never met them... is just being a giant TART

Can someone explain why everyone from announcers to media to even sponsors go out of their way to call Minnar the G.O.A.T., but Rachel never seems to get the same treatment?

Minnar's accomplishment is insane and he deserves all the recognition he gets no doubt. But Rachel is just completely dominant. They participate in the same sport. Soooooo......?

Because Anne Caroline Chausson is the GOAT, not Rachel.

ACC is the most accomplished cyclist of all times. That means of all the cyclists ever. If she'll be back next year for EWS and win the title, then well, she'll get bigger than the sport.

Seeing Minaar standing next to everyone in that podium pic makes me realize just how tall he really is wow!

Pinkbike, once again your coverage is stellar! Almost every single pic is worthy of being printed as a poster, and the writing's good too! You're to other bike sites what rachel or aaron are to their competitors!

Gwin looked so stoked at the end of his run. Cannot not be happy for the guy !

Something like two weeks ago Matti Lehikonen told that a bike with an idler pulley would never win a DH race because, you know, so much drag. The same goes with gearboxes. Maybe someone have to eat his words now...

And I saw Brendog on an e-bike in the pits. Does it mean something?

maybe he is moving to LaPierre, or maybe he is sponsored by a brand that want their most stylish rider to ride their new bike.
  • 2 0
That if he can whip it, they can sell it... or at least that's what the thinking is.

Awesome WCDH coverage and pics, thank you

I like Gwin because he is the fastest downhiller, those making him the best. I admire the way he rides and by the interviews that I have seen he is pretty humble and hardworking.
