Starting May 10th, Mitch Chubey, Luana Oliveira and the Inca Avalanche Trail Fest will take over the Sacred Valley of the Inca and Ollantaytambo, Peru. The newly formed trail fest features 5 days of riding on the best descents in the area, evening cocktail parties, Inca sites and cultural experienced you just don't get anywhere else. The week is capped off by the Inca Avalanche race itself. Now in its 5th year, the Inca Avalanche is 2 days of mass start racing from 16,000ft. alt. at the base of the Veronica glacier to the valley floor, nearly 6,000ft below. If that wasn't enough to blow your mind, the race ends in a party that spills over into the awards ceremony and jump jam, that then spills into an after party..this is the kind of full throttle vacation you need a week to recover from. But you'll never regret going so hard, as the week offers almost 70,000 feet of descending!

That trail is amazing. I rode it once when I was a noob. It was my first time riding a DH bike and wearing a FF helmet. Need to go back so I can mash on it now. You go through like 4 different climate zones, cold snowy grasslands, forests, farmlands, and desert.

This is a "someday" event for me - a trip of a lifetime. I've spent two weeks in Peru and loved every minute of it. During the scenic-as-hell two-hour train ride to Aguas Calientes (the town at the base of Machu Picchu) the entire time I scouted for single track and wondered how epic it would be to ride in those hills.

Thanks for the article Ali - make sure to post a ton of good stuff to your IG account.

KG - If you make it back there check out the Chaska Wasi Hostel in Ollantaytambo. I stayed there on an MTB trip to Peru this December and Katty, the owner, was the best hostess I could imagine. She let us cook in the kitchen, stored our bikes securely for no charge while we went to Machu Picchu, told us where all the trails were, helped us negotiate shuttles to them and even hung around as a translator when I had to go to the hospital. Not to mention that she is incredibly kind and a blast to be around.

That's awesome. I'll make note of the info. When I was there before, my girlfriend-at-the-time was Peruvian, so I had a built-in guide which make it pretty easy. But that won't be the case next time I go. I just looked up that hotel on Street View. Looks legit - love it. I want to go hit that little restaurant next door right now. Peru kicks a lot of ass.

Dang, it was just last year when I did this and a week after the event. Cold, windy, cloudy and wet at the top but warm and sunny at the bottom. This trail was full of fun.

I went there few years ago, amazing trails and like pwe312 said, in 30 minutes, you can pass through different climate zones

locals aren't integrated in the Action .. only the tourists
  • 4 0
Nothing could be further from the truth, vhdh - the race is 90% locals, all paid help are locals, all materials produced locals, locals always win the race, etc etc.
  • 2 0
in your previous experience at the Inca Avalanche you were dissatisfied with how the local community was integrated?
