Introducing Pond Beaver 2020, Pinkbike's Virtual Trade Show Coverage

Apr 7, 2020

Pinkbike Pond Beaver 2020

This spring almost all bike industry trade shows were cancelled or postponed due to the serious health risks posed by Coronavirus—from Taipei Cycle to Sea Otter, and more. But despite these strange times, companies have been busy over the last year and there is a lot of new tech on the horizon. So while we're disappointed to not be drinking bubble tea in Taiwan or heading for sunny California right about now, we're not going to let it stop us checking out all the new stuff that's being released this year.

In the before times, when we were free to high five, eat at "restaurants," and pass each other bubbly water.
The PB tents are going to have to sit in storage a little while longer...

Instead, through the magic of the internet and the postal service, we're putting on a virtual trade show: Pond Beaver 2020. We'll be taking a look at all the new stuff and doing our usual show coverage—first looks, randoms, videos, etc., but we'll be doing it from the comfort and safety of home.

Yep, it won't be a substitute for the real thing, but there are some positives: not having to share a room with Levy, no awkwardly trying to remember people's names, no Reno (sorry Zink), no headaches after the Crown and Anchor... Also instead of a "Cows of Crankworx" we'll do a "Pets of Pond Beaver" instead. You can meet my pet rock, Roch Voisine.

Over the past few weeks Kaz has spent an inhuman amount of time on Zoom, Slack, FaceTime, Hangouts, Messenger, Skype, Teams, and GoToMeeting getting ready for this.

Over the next few weeks you'll see a ton of new bikes, suspension, and gear from Pond Beaver, starting tomorrow. We've got fresh goods from a ton of brands, including Continental, ENVE, Fox Factory, FSA, Guerrilla Gravity, Kona, Maxxis, Microshift, PNW Components, Race Face, Ride Concepts, RockShox, Roval, SQ Lab, Troy Lee Designs, and many more!

This is an experiment, here's to keeping the wheels turning. Pond Beaver 2020!

I need it. Alloy frame prices after our currency tanked has made me rethink. 3K for an alloy frame is getting up there..

@sethius: the only thing they wont have is a sh1tty downhill

I'm sure there are ladies who like bike porn too (or maybe there aren't and I'll never find a soul mate).

@lucianrodriguez: Have you ever won it?
  • 2 0
Agreed. As a NorCalian I always go and race the lame DH, amble about in the dust or the mud, and do some day drinking. Then complain about how it used to be better . . .Now? Totally miss it . . .
  • 2 0
@NorcalJones: Don't forget all the waiting in line for your age group or an injury delay! Crossing any finish line makes it all worth it. And the day drinking. I still have that Thursday and Friday off work next week and will be trail riding there anyway. Day drinking. Safely.

Weird that my brain read "POUND beaver".
  • 2 0
 @IamZOSO: and now I can't unsee that
  • 4 3
It`s so weird: despite the good mood and the light humor that this Thing is bringing, several strange people keep on downvoting some funny harmless comments. Is it frustration? A lack of serotonine? Brain dysfunctions?...
Come on... Relax! Take it easy... Smile

@speed10, Levy will lose when he reaches for his required sugar-free Monster Energy and tips over, but I'm game to give it a go.

 Mike vs Mike
-who can get most up/down voted comment.
-Farthest Grim Donut manual.
-Fastest energy drink chug and also farthest standing piss stream measured in ft/in
-a game of B.I.K.E.

"Mike vs Mike: Battle for the last square of toilet paper."

Levy doesn't stand a chance with all that Tim Hortens but Kaz strictly eats artisanal local Bham loam soaked in kombucha and has bowl movements that look like little wooden sasquatch carvings. It's going to be a riveting finish....to the last square.

DH race. Bikes have no pressure in tyres, shock or fork. Riders are given a mini pump and a shock pump. On 'go', you can start riding at any time. Do you spend more time attaining higher pressure or do you get a head start and ride with caution?
  • 2 0
@iamamodel: mini pump on the suspension ftw.
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: Levy might win anyway concerning humor, self-irony and common sense. That`s not a least detail.
  • 2 0
 @iamamodel: I like this

 @sspiff: too cruel - I love it!

new from GG: LT 29er or pedalhead redesign?
  • 2 0
In super curious about that one too.
  • 2 0
I'm thinking Pedalhead, given the weird website snafu where it disappeared.
  • 2 0
GG if you're listening a redesign/reissue of the GG DH would be amazing!
  • 2 0
 They will launch an ebike.

 Awesome! From experience we just finished Digital Show to our merchants and partners (instead of physical) that was good, happy to see that more and more companies adopting those practices;

The 38 is definitely in existence. I have a reservation on one through my bike shop, said to be ready sometime in may. I also know that the 2021 X2 is releasing the same time. unknown if it changes much, to the prototype one on last weeks Commencal, or different.

Waiting for their next indoor trainer specific super stiff fork. Stiffness is everything, tire clearance is irrelevant.

For those that don’t know, the River Beaver Classic is the Kamloops version of Sea Otter Classic. It’s a multi-day bike festival put on by the hard working folks at the Bicycle Cafe Kamloops - to raise money for famous Kamloops Bike Ranch.

I’m stoked to see some content, but maybe Pink Bike could change the name to the Creek Muskrat or something more original
  • 1 0
if the website was named chartreuse motorcycle, that could be an option Smile

You can never have too much beaver.
  • 7 1
 we love you, PB.

 Brilliant!
  • 4 0
Can i virtually get drunk and jump fire pits?
  • 1 1
To be honest, this could prove to be the best thing. Very few of us can make it to Sea Otter or Eurobike, but we could all attend this. If done well, I think this could have great staying power and have more virtual attendance than any show. Who knows, maybe even Evil can get some decent Pinkbike coverage. I am all in!!
  • 6 2
Will Pinkbike finally release the grim donut?
  • 4 0
Roch Voisine? Really? We all finally forgot about that guy...
  • 1 0
I thought it was a post-april fool joke but no... unfortunately not. Canada`s got such good lads like Devin Townsend or Neil Young... but here is R*** V******.

Shit
  • 1 0
@softsteel: Devin Townsend, Roch Voisine, and Gordon Lightfoot supergroup.

God bless the pond beaver for keeping me away from social media.
  • 3 0
Stole the name from the bicycle cafe. They do the river beaver every year. Great minds think alike I guess.
  • 2 0
Some random prizing perhaps? Everyone knows that most trade shows suck if not for SWAG.
  • 4 1
Anything to keep us from the Grim Donut Video!!
  • 2 0
You guys gonna run a corresponding DH, Enduro, DS and XC on Zwift with this too?
  • 1 0
I keep hoping that we don't have everyone release the new goodies at once... need a steady flow of new stuff to keep me sane...
