Is This Adjustable Stem Ingenious or Unnecessary?

 I need adjustable wheels that can go from 26 to 27.5 to 29.

 Sure, people will make fun of this, but some will remember the same was said about dropper posts and front suspension.  I expect it'll be an unpopular opinion, but I won't bash it until I try it. The execution could obviously use some refinement, but the concept is an original one and deserves honest evaluation, or at least not automatic rejection. I'd be game to give it a try. At least it actually adds a new function - unlike, say, those Shimano dual-control levers from a few years back.

 I like how the long stem is both longer and down a long way but those who climb that aggressively won't take the weight and those that down hill that aggressively won't trust the strength and those who are in between won't pay that much.

 I think this would be great for a shop to lend out to customers so they could experiment with bike setup and figure out what works for them and then purchase the actual stem that they want.

 I could never trust this, a stem that slides and locks into place with a pin will wear out and eventually have play or break.

 How about adjustable handlebars that go from 600mm to 800mm made from 2 dropper posts, no one will mind the weight factor for the awesomeness it brings to the trail

 Back in the nineties I used to used a similar device to help me get my weight forward for climbing. I think it was called bar ends?

 TALAS pretty much does the same thing with better effect since stem length and head angle tend to go hand in hand. i wouldnt want to stretch out and down 100mm when i am running a 66 degree head angle.

 It should integrate into the dropper post. Post up, stem down; post down, stem up; post up, stem down; post down, stem up.... Kinda like a seesaw, those were so much fun.... Or a pump track stimulator, errr, simulator.

 I prefer to just poke my taint with my saddle on long steep climbs.

 Why is it positioned downward?
I think the idea is fun to play with and there are maybe sometimes for some riders where this makes sense.
But, my biggest worry is if the stem actually moved on a jump or landing a jump. That would be scary.
Then, like most dropper post, they have a slight wobble in them, I wonder how this relates to the hands.
If there was any noticeable wobble, that would kind of suck.
Concept wise, its a good idea in a way.
Think about, having your AM bike set up for XC while climbing then move it to a more DH position on the way down.
That actually makes sense for an Enduro or XC race just as a dropper post would!

 As soon as I saw the title in muh head I said "this was invented by some weird euro" and I've literally NEVER been proven wrong when I make that guess. People hate Americans for some understandable reasons but we would never make something this stupid and produce a video of that quality for it.

 It's a great idea. . I have a dual position setup on my jekyll. The steepening of the head angle allows me to put more weight over the front on climbs.

I also noticed a huge loss of climability when I went from a 70mm stem, to a 50mm. But the 50mm allowed me to get really stuck into the steeper, more technical tracks when descending.

So a 120mm on that negative angle would make a huge difference, all while keeping the descending where you want it (the stem will also me strongest in the descending position)

 Has no one considered that you can't turn your bars 360 degrees? In a crash this stem will whip around with your handle bars and will definetly leave a mark or could damage your frame. I think this would be different than a dual crown fork becuse it would move more and hit the frame in a weaker spot.

 yuck , i think these guys who designed this have to much time on there hands. Like how much crap do I need on my bars that Id want to ad this stem release module to my bars along with my KSlev dropper post, brake levers and ahifters. Give me a break.

Bike comapnies can make one size the stretches from child to ape with the flick of a switch, of course well need bendy straw like cables to lengthen automatically. Infact im sure foes might already be working on this inconjunction with Tony Ellsworth and the american dental association.  That is a pretty cool idea. Obviously, most people are going to hate it because it is a new idea. But we do seem to love adjustable parts in our bikes. From gearing to posts to shocks.. adjustability is appreciated. So why not? I'd definitely try it!

 no thanks...with all the shock lock out...shifters, dropper post...etc. too many switches. I think some of us like it simple.....Dropper post and 1x11 shifter...nothing fancy.

 It'd be like riding a new bike ever time you adjust. We all know tha feeling, takes a few mins to feel at home. No, wait a minute, I'll catch up you guys, Stems dropped into recumbent mode.

 I only watched this because of the comments here. Didn't disappoint. Co workers couldn't understand why I was giggling. Maybe goes some way to explain why the Spanish economy is in the pan.

 How about a LEFT SIDE HANDLE BAR, REAR GEAR SELECTOR! I mean lets face it. MTB is soooooo narrow when it comes to reality. They still have yet to acknowledge there are LEFT handed people in the world.

 What about radar assisted auto adjusting bar width for tight trees and while we're at it lets add a function for locating bears, cougars and hikers before we roll up on them at mach1. Adjustable crank length, and a 1X crank ring or cog that can adjust tooth count on the fly by changing it's diameter instead of changing rings/cogs. And Helium filled frames and tires. a drone that can carry my bike up the hill and then film me coming down. TPMS for bikes and auto adjust. and pom pom streamers for my dh ride.

 I guess I can see the usage in enduro where you could have one position for climbing and one for descending. But all in all... seems like a pointless product with a crap ton of R&D behind it.

The best part of ideas like this is the ideas that they help get kick started. Maybe something else will come from this that's more useful and not so heavy. That's a lot of weight to have hanging on the front of your bike.

 If this was a telescoping design like a rear air shock horizontally where you normally have you stem with 40/50mm of travel it would be interesting. The trick would to be to ensure a telescopic design had enough rigidity because a lot of the force would be at 90 degrees to telespoic designs (haudralic rams and the like) areusually designed to deal with. I'm cheap so still wouldn't buy it,
but it would be interesting and more subtle

 Don't be so surprised if you see extreme xc types rocking this though they'll be hanging out for a carbon titanium version. As for me I can somehow 'see' the logic behind it but it ain't for me or for the way I ride. So yeah nah as we say in NZ.

 Makes sense for competition xc use. Looks ugly as f*** though. The ideal price would be somewhere from 140-170$.
It would be a far better product with side rails (so it can be shorter) and 35-80 extension for the long tt trend.

For me; at 53; Im done breaking arms going of ledges! its more trail riding! I love the idea! I takes my reign sx and with an adjustable seat post and turns it into an xc bike! Then, drop the seat, bring up bars closer; back to free ride again! nice!

What does it cost? How much! I can buy a good junk of a single speed 27+ for that!

 This would be an awesome device to help you dial in your fit before you buy an expensive stem. Would be cool if shops have these to rent out so you can test a bunch of different lengths on the trail to find the right rise and length. Rental fee applies towards price of stem if you buy.

 I'm more offended by the mountain bikers in spandex than the adjustable stem. This will have a market. Anyone who has kitted out their CC bike with a suicide stem which lowers their hands beyond their skill level would be interested in the adjustability.

 Talk to me when you made adjustable hubs that stop new axle standards turning my zillion pound wheels into expensive earrings every 12 months. Now that would be useful.

 This could be good to help you figure out what stem rise and length you need. Once you find what's comfortable, go buy the stem you need and pass this thing on to your buddy.

 I need on the fly adjustable crankarm lengths with adjutable bottom braket width. If I want to construct a Dildobike sexmachine - thing This bar might be a good feature - for the rest forget it.

 First I thought it was a joke. Then I thought it was stupid. Then I thought.... well,maybe. Then I smartened up an decided I'm not really interested in trying it.

I like that in our current season of ever changing standards for the sake of refinement and marginal gains, someone is thinking outside the box. Better yet, it's widely compatible with people's existing rides.

What I don't like is that I don't think it solves a problem... At least not for me. My high stack height combined with a short stem is awesome going downhill, but it's also great going uphill. With the recent trend of long reach and steep seat angles, my experience is becoming more and more common, and there is simply not enough advantage to gain from a dropper stem.

Or... Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there would be a significant advantage. In the past, I've never had the urge to play around with stem length because I prioritize downhill and always bikes that fit. However, now that the door has been opened, maybe I'll do some back to back testing with a long negative angle stem and see what happens.

Regardless, I'm not interested in the product at this point in time. My handle bars are too cluttered. I have 2 brakes, rear shifter, dropper post, and remote lockout. There's simply no available space. The ergonomics are already a little difficult. I think that the industry would have to make some giant leaps in product integration before I'd consider adding more controls.

Ideally, I'd like Shimano and SRAM to make their electronic drivetrain systems open source so that other manufacturers can tie their systems into shifter controls. Not only that,but the systems could (in addition to independent control) be then set up to run through customizable modes where perhaps a single button would lower the seat, lock out the fork and shock, and move the handle bars forward. Pressing that same button again could cycle the bike back to descend mode.

The technology already exists to do all this,but it will take some time for the manufacturers to break down the walls that they've built around themselves. I foresee SRAM as being the first company to produce a fully integrated product line since, at this time, they are the only manufacturer capable of providing a complete set of components for a bicycle. If SRAM is successful in this arena, and if they do it soon enough, it could spell the end for their biggest competitors Shimano and Fox,at least in the high performance market.

 I like the idea. Could replace the DPA in my Pike (no more additional friction). But the short version is still to long. A 30 to 90mm system would be great.

 An additional weight gain of 250 - 300 grams over a normal stem does seems a tad high for not an immense gain in performance.

 I never want to run a bike with a -20 120mm stem. I don't find it difficult or uncomfortable to climb with a 65mm or even 50mm stem.

 This doesn't make any sense to me. Stem length is a way of adjusting your reach and is relative to the geometry and dimensions of the frame, not the terrain you're riding.
