Is This Adjustable Stem Ingenious or Unnecessary?

Oct 29, 2015
by Pinkbike Staff

Have you ever been on a ride and thought, "I wish I could shorten or lengthen my stem on-the-fly?" We haven't either, but the 3fstech AIM stem is designed to do just that. A handlebar mounted remote releases the stem, allowing it to be set at either 55mm, 95mm, or 120mm in length. Total weight is claimed to be 400 grams, including the remote. For reference, "regular" stems usually come in somewhere between 100 and 150 grams depending on their length.

How much will it cost? Well, it certainly won't be cheap, with final pricing expected to be in the neighborhood of €275.

I need adjustable wheels that can go from 26 to 27.5 to 29.
  • 40 19
You know what, it is actually doable if you design a non-traditional wheel similar to a camera shutter.

@area17 Ha, I only need the 'high' option on that one, heck even the 'mid' option would do!

Genius ! Set to 27.5 while talking to your buddies at the trailhead, so you're 'relevant', 26 once you get going in the fun stuff and switch to 29, while no one is looking, for the climbs!

I'm totally getting one for my E-bike. It is...THE FUTURE Lol. of all the ridiculous things that have ever been done to a stem. This one is just...RiDICKulously stupid. Duuuude your Stem's got a boner! No it doesn't! Yeah, It Does! It's a bloody wanker! Quite pointing that thing at me! Buuut Its Adjustable! Sorry...I don't think we can be friends anymore.

Sure, people will make fun of this, but some will remember the same was said about dropper posts and front suspension. Most bike geometry scientists agree that the incredible technology in 3FStech AIM Stem© is only the tip of the iceberg of the possibility in On the Fly Under Control Kinetics, especially the ones that utilize Triggerable Handlebar Integration Solutions leading to what the industry will come to know as Infinite Scalability. Even more exciting is the emergence of Reactive Electric Trigger Adjusted Rotary Drive Effort Detection, which can tie in with Di2 to measure your bodies effort level and detect terrain to turn your bike from a rigid XC machine into a 62 degree HT DH monster with 240mm of travel. Of course there will always be luddite detractors scared of change but we have a bright future ahead in the MTB world.

As for some riding styles like XC it might work but I supose it's weight is more than 150g-200g range and that's not what XC riders like to mount on their light weight Ccarbon bikes. As for DH/Freeride I just don't see it.

Hmm... maybe someone involve wireless tyre pressure valve, with a CO2 cartridge, remote control, wireless electric servo mechanisms release air into the container, or release the high-pressed air cartridges into the tyre on the fly with a manometer on the bars to perfectly control tyre pressure depending on the terrain and the traction needed. Little wi-fi or bluetooth connector would do the job. Im a bit scared of the size of batteries needed to have enough energy to power all those systems. Just thinking Smile
15 shifters on the bars, need a pilot's license to ride that piece of alu/carbon. But You can set everything without going off of the bike. Just like a smartphone market. Control everything, unless you you're out of battery.

  • 68 5
I expect it'll be an unpopular opinion, but I won't bash it until I try it. The execution could obviously use some refinement, but the concept is an original one and deserves honest evaluation, or at least not automatic rejection. I'd be game to give it a try. At least it actually adds a new function - unlike, say, those Shimano dual-control levers from a few years back.
  • 17 2
I could actually see this as a good idea for XC and all around trail bikes. It needs to be lighter of course but it's a sound theory. More weight over the front tire for better traction climbing and shorter for better descending. They took it pretty close to the extremes with the lengths but it is a sound concept.
  • 8 1
The only reason I could think to try it is that I have only been biking a couple of years and am not quite sure how the different lengths feel, so it would make for a great back-to-back-to-back comparison test
  • 18 1
I'm holding out for the PDent version.
  • 4 1
Agreed but I must admit my first reaction was that it's about as useful as a $2 bill.
  • 7 0
Mana624, I like your thinking. For a rider who wasn't sure which length to go for, a shop could have this product for you to use and then you could buy a fixed-length (regular) stem best suited for your needs or style.
  • 23 0
How is a $2 not useful? Uncommon maybe, but works great! Like having two one dollar bills but with half the paper!
  • 3 2
2bucks...that's like half way to a can of RedBull...and we know they need the money. (I don't hate the principle of the stem btw...needs tweaking of course...but ya)
  • 3 0

I like how the long stem is both longer and down a long way but those who climb that aggressively won't take the weight and those that down hill that aggressively won't trust the strength and those who are in between won't pay that much.

I think this would be great for a shop to lend out to customers so they could experiment with bike setup and figure out what works for them and then purchase the actual stem that they want.
  • 3 0
A couple of hours riding around, get a feeling for a few options. Then return it.
  • 1 0
 @DirtyHal
But it only has few (3-4 or maybe 5) locking positions. Looks like they're spread to about +-1 inch (I mean locking positions). Do you think it would be good to determine the best riding position with such a wide spread?
  • 2 0
i was thinking the same thing. i could legit see this as a tool that a shop would own, especially if they're in the business of geometry analysis and pro-fittings for people. it would be an easy tool to have on a bike for fittings. other than that...
  • 5 1
There are several sizing stems available that are far better than this would be for that purpose:

dropper-seatposts make perfect sense.... this one? in theory yes, but on my bike? NEVER EVER!

Or does the future hold no more than the foretold E-pocolypse of which this is surely a sign of, and he is simply trying to steer the future away from death, destruction, and what can only be certain steerer tube impalement? Oh WakiOZ, please tell us. Is this our destiny!?!

Back in the nineties I used to used a similar device to help me get my weight forward for climbing. I think it was called bar ends?
  • 7 1
TALAS pretty much does the same thing with better effect since stem length and head angle tend to go hand in hand. i wouldnt want to stretch out and down 100mm when i am running a 66 degree head angle.
  • 1 0
Shocked I made it this far down before finding this. Less expensive too... Assuming you're willing to pay for the base-model fork in the first place of course
  • 5 0
It should integrate into the dropper post. Post up, stem down; post down, stem up; post up, stem down; post down, stem up.... Kinda like a seesaw, those were so much fun.... Or a pump track stimulator, errr, simulator.
  • 5 1
Funny how people are so negative about this.
OK, less necessary than a dropper post, but when bikes will have adjustable geo (strive style), dropper post + adjustable seat angle, stem and handle bar too, and why not tire pressure etc...
30 years ago who would have welcomed droppers and E.I. shocks?
  • 7 1
You are spot on Uuno. All innovation has it's place regardless if it is ready for the current times or too far ahead. Let's take a small step back and look at the concepts that are now the norm and has changed the face of biking as a whole. Let's have fun and remind people of their responses when new innovations were introduced:

1) Suspension Fork, why do we need this when we are doing just fine without the extra weight, wait my filings in my teeth do not fall out anymore

2) Rear Suspension, why do we need this when our suspension fork does the job already, wait my ass and back don't hurt as much now

3) Disc brakes, my V-brakes work just fine EXCEPT in the rain and mud, oh wait even when needing to stop

4) Adjustable seat-post, nah way to heavy and cumbersome, wait how did we every get along without this

5) Adjustable geometry, why do we need that? Wow, 1 bike that can do almost all types of riding, crazy

This could go on and on but at the end of the day human nature since the beginning of time is to always resist, deny, accept, then adapt. Ride on friends, Ride on....
  • 3 0
Hmmmmm, not exactly. Not for many people anyway. Yes there was resistance and doubt in the beginning, but I feel like those innovations/adaptations were very highly desired among many. The people that did not want them then, probably still do not want them now. I remember Dreaming of a day when you could raise and lower your seat on the fly, all the way back in the late nineties. I remember dreaming of when a Bike could have suspension, and disc brakes. I guess I have just never dreamed of the day when I could make my stem and handlebars feel like they were no longer very securely attached to the bike. I've always looked for the most robust interface and connection at this point as possible, on whatever type of bike. Same with cranks and pedals. There are some things I just don't want to fail. Period. Some things I don't want there to be any play or rattle. Its easy enough to notice when your headset is a TINY bit loose, or when your BB isn't snugged up properly. You can feel that play, and it does not inspire a lot of confidence. Its easy enough to notice the difference in stiffness going from a nice short stem to a slightly longer but cheaper one. Same thing with the handlebar, and same thing with a noodly suspension fork with skinny stanchions and terrible tolerances. Introducing something that is inherently going to have a bit of play at the bar and stem interface is not my idea of a good time.
  • 1 0
Yes, but your just refereing to the intricate formality of the innovation. Maybe the design has already considered that and or eventually they will or someone will figure out how to satisfy the needs of the consumer regarding those specifics. This just shows that there is another technology on the horizon waiting to be perfected to enhance the riding experience, just like adjusting a seatpost. I am a bit of a innovator and have some ideas that could make this better but I wouldn't have those thoughts if I never saw this. So regardless if this idea is for you or for me. It helped to open the box and provoke the imagination...
  • 1 0
I really think they just missed their market with this one. The dropper post does something drastically different than this altogether, and fits with mtb very well. I actually think this concept might not be terrible for some other cycling applications. Like touring, or maybe even road or tri. Basically where you are generally confined to a more static position, and being able to adjust that to comfort or to perform could be a positive enough attribute. In MTB though, sorry, not on my bike. Not a chance.
  • 1 0
Yes, probably a hard sell for the MTB crowd but I definitely see this technology being used for bike fitment, touring bikes, and even commuter bikes. All in all, a few adjustments to this could open up the target audience.
  • 3 0
I see where this is going. Too many controls, so a computer will be needed to adjust all geometry, drivetrain and cockpit settings on the fly based on G sensors, terrain sensors, tire pressure monitors, GPS, body sensors and power sensors. Then an iPhone app will be needed to upload your rides to the system server. The system will analyze the ride and use AI to maximize all settings for each part of your route. Each time you ride the system will learn how to adapt your bike to your body, abilities, blood sugar and favorite trails. Ta-da! The $20,000 MTB with a $29.99 monthly subscription. The top of the line system includes a drone that not only reads the terrain, your anticipated line, and current position, it also videos your adventure and posts it real time on Strava. That option adds another $8,999.99 plus a $5.99/ gigabyte data charge.
  • 7 0
I prefer to just poke my taint with my saddle on long steep climbs.
  • 3 0
 Why is it positioned downward?
I think the idea is fun to play with and there are maybe sometimes for some riders where this makes sense.
But, my biggest worry is if the stem actually moved on a jump or landing a jump. That would be scary.
Then, like most dropper post, they have a slight wobble in them, I wonder how this relates to the hands.
If there was any noticeable wobble, that would kind of suck.
Concept wise, its a good idea in a way.
Think about, having your AM bike set up for XC while climbing then move it to a more DH position on the way down.
That actually makes sense for an Enduro or XC race just as a dropper post would!
Ummmmmm!
  • 2 0
ever seen XC riders riding with no rise/flat and low bars?
  • 1 0
 Yes!
Have you been on this stem?
How does it feel?
I like the idea but have some concerns.
I usually ride DH and FR so my bikes have never been XC specific!
  • 3 0
As soon as I saw the title in muh head I said "this was invented by some weird euro" and I've literally NEVER been proven wrong when I make that guess. People hate Americans for some understandable reasons but we would never make something this stupid and produce a video of that quality for it.

  • 2 0
Surprised this 'rally' business hasn't made top comment.
  • 1 0
Yea kramster. I was laughing even more for that specification rather than the stem itself.
  • 2 0
It's a great idea. . I have a dual position setup on my jekyll. The steepening of the head angle allows me to put more weight over the front on climbs.

I also noticed a huge loss of climability when I went from a 70mm stem, to a 50mm. But the 50mm allowed me to get really stuck into the steeper, more technical tracks when descending.

So a 120mm on that negative angle would make a huge difference, all while keeping the descending where you want it (the stem will also me strongest in the descending position)
  • 2 0
Has no one considered that you can't turn your bars 360 degrees? In a crash this stem will whip around with your handle bars and will definetly leave a mark or could damage your frame. I think this would be different than a dual crown fork becuse it would move more and hit the frame in a weaker spot.
  • 3 2
yuck , i think these guys who designed this have to much time on there hands. Like how much crap do I need on my bars that Id want to ad this stem release module to my bars along with my KSlev dropper post, brake levers and ahifters. Give me a break.
  • 2 1
cant wait for hydro top and downtubes. Bike comapnies can make one size the stretches from child to ape with the flick of a switch, of course well need bendy straw like cables to lengthen automatically. Infact im sure foes might already be working on this inconjunction with Tony Ellsworth and the american dental association. Unrealted dentists rejoice in the new teeth they'll be putting on people when they case a jump and the handle bars accelerate off the front of the bike. Built in trebuchet's!

No, she caught her lip on the rim of someone's helmet
  • 1 0
If it gets people on bikes that otherwise wouldn't have, then it's perfect!

Not that I'm wanting one but, like all new technology, I'll wait a few years after it hits the market to let them work out all the kinks...if it's still a thing by then. (See: Hammerschmidt cranks)
  • 1 0
That is a pretty cool idea. Obviously, most people are going to hate it because it is a new idea. But we do seem to love adjustable parts in our bikes. From gearing to posts to shocks.. adjustability is appreciated. So why not? I'd definitely try it!
  • 2 0
no thanks...with all the shock lock out...shifters, dropper post...etc. too many switches. I think some of us like it simple.....Dropper post and 1x11 shifter...nothing fancy.

I only watched this because of the comments here. Didn't disappoint. Co workers couldn't understand why I was giggling. Maybe goes some way to explain why the Spanish economy is in the pan.
  • 3 1
How about a LEFT SIDE HANDLE BAR, REAR GEAR SELECTOR! I mean lets face it. MTB is soooooo narrow when it comes to reality. They still have yet to acknowledge there are LEFT handed people in the world.
  • 3 0
Aren't bikes rigged up like this in the UK?
  • 2 0
They are but only for breake levers I suppose. 'I've never seen left handed derailer shifter.
  • 1 0
Nor have I...And in a growing MTB world of 1x chain-rings. To NOT have the option seems as foolish (from a business standpoint) as not creating bead-lockers for tubeless.
  • 5 1
Yeah, in the UK it's just the brake levers that are reversed. I believe it is widely understood that just because people are left handed, they are not so retarded as to be unable to change gear with their right hand
  • 1 0
Yea its also widely understood among left handers' that we are the only ones in our right minds. Givin the right brain/left handed, left brain/right handed paradox.
But you must be right handed @villager, so I will not go into details as to why that is important, rather than "retarded"
The modern world of MTB is about customization.
No left sided rear gear select, makes almost as much money as no bead lockers, for those who ride tubeless. If you are going to re-leave people of their money. Do smart, rather than smrt.
  • 1 0
I wouldn't give a fk whether my rear shifter is operated by my left or right hand. That's not the customisation I need.
  • 1 0
Remember that when you loose your right hand...And still wish to ride. Try not to be so butt hurt about something you cannot envision either.
  • 1 0
What about radar assisted auto adjusting bar width for tight trees and while we're at it lets add a function for locating bears, cougars and hikers before we roll up on them at mach1. Adjustable crank length, and a 1X crank ring or cog that can adjust tooth count on the fly by changing it's diameter instead of changing rings/cogs. And Helium filled frames and tires. a drone that can carry my bike up the hill and then film me coming down. TPMS for bikes and auto adjust. and pom pom streamers for my dh ride.
  • 1 0
I guess I can see the usage in enduro where you could have one position for climbing and one for descending. But all in all... seems like a pointless product with a crap ton of R&D behind it.

The best part of ideas like this is the ideas that they help get kick started. Maybe something else will come from this that's more useful and not so heavy. That's a lot of weight to have hanging on the front of your bike.
  • 1 0
If this was a telescoping design like a rear air shock horizontally where you normally have you stem with 40/50mm of travel it would be interesting. The trick would to be to ensure a telescopic design had enough rigidity because a lot of the force would be at 90 degrees to telespoic designs (haudralic rams and the like) areusually designed to deal with. I'm cheap so still wouldn't buy it,
but it would be interesting and more subtle
  • 1 0
Don't be so surprised if you see extreme xc types rocking this though they'll be hanging out for a carbon titanium version. As for me I can somehow 'see' the logic behind it but it ain't for me or for the way I ride. So yeah nah as we say in NZ.
  • 1 0
Makes sense for competition xc use. Looks ugly as f*** though. The ideal price would be somewhere from 140-170$.
It would be a far better product with side rails (so it can be shorter) and 35-80 extension for the long tt trend.
  • 1 0
 How old are you?

For me; at 53; Im done breaking arms going of ledges! its more trail riding! I love the idea! I takes my reign sx and with an adjustable seat post and turns it into an xc bike! Then, drop the seat, bring up bars closer; back to free ride again! nice!

What does it cost? How much! I can buy a good junk of a single speed 27+ for that!
  • 1 0
This would be an awesome device to help you dial in your fit before you buy an expensive stem. Would be cool if shops have these to rent out so you can test a bunch of different lengths on the trail to find the right rise and length. Rental fee applies towards price of stem if you buy.
  • 1 1
I'm more offended by the mountain bikers in spandex than the adjustable stem. This will have a market. Anyone who has kitted out their CC bike with a suicide stem which lowers their hands beyond their skill level would be interested in the adjustability.
  • 2 0
Talk to me when you made adjustable hubs that stop new axle standards turning my zillion pound wheels into expensive earrings every 12 months. Now that would be useful.
  • 2 0
This could be good to help you figure out what stem rise and length you need. Once you find what's comfortable, go buy the stem you need and pass this thing on to your buddy.
  • 1 0
I need on the fly adjustable crankarm lengths with adjutable bottom braket width. If I want to construct a Dildobike sexmachine - thing This bar might be a good feature - for the rest forget it.
  • 4 1
I would consider it if I didn't have to trust my stem off drops and other hard hits
  • 4 0
Anyone else wonder what a rally bike is?
  • 6 6
First I thought it was a joke. Then I thought it was stupid. Then I thought.... well, maybe. Then I smartened up an decided I'm not really interested in trying it.

I like that in our current season of ever changing standards for the sake of refinement and marginal gains, someone is thinking outside the box. Better yet, it's widely compatible with people's existing rides.

What I don't like is that I don't think it solves a problem... At least not for me. My high stack height combined with a short stem is awesome going downhill, but it's also great going uphill. With the recent trend of long reach and steep seat angles, my experience is becoming more and more common, and there is simply not enough advantage to gain from a dropper stem.

Or... Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there would be a significant advantage. In the past, I've never had the urge to play around with stem length because I prioritize downhill and always bikes that fit. However, now that the door has been opened, maybe I'll do some back to back testing with a long negative angle stem and see what happens.

Regardless, I'm not interested in the product at this point in time. My handle bars are too cluttered. I have 2 brakes, rear shifter, dropper post, and remote lockout. There's simply no available space. The ergonomics are already a little difficult. I think that the industry would have to make some giant leaps in product integration before I'd consider adding more controls.

Ideally, I'd like Shimano and SRAM to make their electronic drivetrain systems open source so that other manufacturers can tie their systems into shifter controls. Not only that, but the systems could (in addition to independent control) be then set up to run through customizable modes where perhaps a single button would lower the seat, lock out the fork and shock, and move the handle bars forward. Pressing that same button again could cycle the bike back to descend mode.

The technology already exists to do all this, but it will take some time for the manufacturers to break down the walls that they've built around themselves. I foresee SRAM as being the first company to produce a fully integrated product line since, at this time, they are the only manufacturer capable of providing a complete set of components for a bicycle. If SRAM is successful in this arena, and if they do it soon enough, it could spell the end for their biggest competitors Shimano and Fox,at least in the high performance market.
  • 4 0
Im inventing one that adjusts length via increased blood flow.
  • 4 0
Does it come with the little blue pills?
  • 3 0
*accidentally presses button halfway down descent* *handlebars shift forward* "Sh*T!!!"
  • 2 0
Doesnt solve a real problem. Way too expensive. Potentially Dangerous. Weighs a ton. AND looks really bad... Maybe should just market it to bike shops for fit-up.
  • 1 0
Looks great tech, till you think about the bars spining round in a crash....
Bye bye top tube!
Should put an advisory on there "only guaranteed safety with triple clamp forks".
  • 1 0
I like the idea. Could replace the DPA in my Pike (no more additional friction). But the short version is still to long. A 30 to 90mm system would be great.
But yes its still ugly and overpriced. Sram its your turn.
  • 3 0
"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn't stop to think whether they should"
  • 1 0
Just seen they have a Kickstarter!

This is either the worst business idea ever or a cunning plan to extract cash from morons who want on the fly stem adjustment.

Bahahahahahahahahahahkjwbfcsldkbfnal\w
  • 1 1
Have you ever been on a ride and thought, "I wish my stem looked like a flacid or erect penis?" We haven't either, but the 3fstech AIM stem is designed to do just that.

How much will it cost? Well, it certainly won't be cheap......well it bloody should be cheap cause it's the most retarded thing I've ever seen!
  • 2 0
I've just adjusted my PB filter so I don't ever have to read shite like this again .... top marks for comedy factor though !!
  • 1 0
a 1 lb stem is a perfect match for someone sporting a 2.5 lb chainguide .....

and 26"+ is next not 31", because it has all the advantages if 27.5"+ while weighing less and being more nimble ...
  • 1 0
This is a good point, if +size is the way forward then where is 26+? Surely, according to those who "send it", this is the ultmate wheel size....Wonder why it's not here,eh?.....
  • 2 0
Idk about you guys but if the stem has all a little bit of play i might freak out and the whole bike off a cliff
  • 3 0
 @Wakileaks you've been beat!
  • 1 0
I think at some point people need to just ride the bike and stop trying to upgrade there bike with fancy parts to make themselves ride better
  • 2 0
Also would someone adjust the knobs head who even thought that that shit stem would be a good idea
  • 1 0
Oh wow thank you pinkbike...best thread of comments ive seen in a long time. My wife is wondering why im cracking up every 2 seconds lol.
  • 2 0
What's Benicio del Toro doing building bike parts. Wheres the one piece construction? I wouldn't trust that weld.
  • 1 0
Make the price roughly equivalent to the monthly rent on a North Shore apartment and they won't be able to keep them in stock.
  • 3 0
Now I need wide-adjustable handle bar
  • 1 0
it's been done...was it answer- someone help me out my memory sucks
  • 1 0
 ODI made it.
  • 5 6
Everyone hates, but literally the same comments were said about the dropper post. Look where thats at, probably on your trail bike. This clearly is the first one being heavy, bulky and straight up ugly... Just like the first dropper posts. Give it some time and who knows it might just end up on your bike.
  • 12 1
yeah but dropper posts are a good idea. This is not
  • 3 0
Yup. Just because 1 in a 1,000,000 ideas that most people thought were dumb turned out to be decent doesn't mean that your stupid idea isn't.... stupid.
  • 3 0
I'll go with genius AND unnecessary

Really the most important question is: Is it 3FS Tech? Or 3F Stech? And if so what is a stech?
  • 2 0
The inventor was surfing the Gravity Dropper website and afterwards had a nightmare ...
  • 1 0
It's costs so much because they have to pay for the super expensively shot ad video!
Also, what the hell is a "rally mountain bike"?
  • 1 0
Don't know other countries, but in spain "rally" is the same as XC
  • 3 0
Holy crap! Whats a rally mountain bike?! I need one of them!
  • 1 0
An additional weight gain of 250 - 300 grams over a normal stem does seems a tad high for not an immense gain in performance.
  • 1 0
I never want to run a bike with a -20 120mm stem. I don't find it difficult or uncomfortable to climb with a 65mm or even 50mm stem.
  • 1 1
Those have been around since... Like... The 20's?
I had few adjustable stems... They may sound like a good idea, but they are just a pain. And dont work well.. Creak and flex...
Nuff said
  • 1 0
Gimmick. Like I'd trust an adjustable stem coming into a rough section with speed or landing off a big jump? If anything this idea is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
  • 2 0
How do i find the kickstarter page ,,, i really want to invest ..... this time next year we'll be millionairs Rodney...
  • 2 0
During the bankruptcy meeting someone says: "who the hell forgot to send the focus group survey?"
  • 1 0
That's actually a really good idea .Great to see someone thinking outside the box for a change .Just don't go and make it out of carbon!!
  • 1 1
Oh man. There are a lot of comments here. Has anyone mentioned an adjustable bike?
I could use a road bike to ride to mountain than frame grows shocks and tires and turns into 160mm travel bike...
  • 1 0
I want one, but it has to be prettier looking first. I would pay dropper post pricing for one that looked nice and functioned reliably.
  • 1 0
I wouldn't want to accidentally hit this and have the bars move down and forward when you were not ready for it...can you say endo!!
  • 2 0
We have a new champion for worst media player!
  • 2 0
Shit just got real in here
  • 2 0
Already April fools' day... time is flying !
  • 1 0
Anyone remember bar ends the? Talk about reinventing the wheel.... No pun intended .
  • 1 0
just ask yourself: how often have you found yourself in the middle of a ride wishing for a shorter/longer stem?
  • 8 6
what happens when you ride rampage with that
  • 4 0
 you die.
  • 3 0
Uh, I don't think you need a funky stem to almost die riding Rampage. Reference: 2015 Rampage.
  • 2 0
oh no, no this just won't do.
  • 1 0
So what happens if the locking mechanism fails? Will you just have constantly adjusting bars for the rest of the ride?
  • 1 0
Given that even in the promo video it looks like the connection/locking mechanism is a bit sloppy, that seems like a rather valid concern.
  • 2 0
cialis. For when the moment is just right.
  • 2 1
enough already!! just ride your flipping bike and be happy with your set up you chose...
  • 2 2
This doesn't make any sense to me. Stem length is a way of adjusting your reach and is relative to the geometry and dimensions of the frame, not the terrain you're riding.
  • 1 0
I guess most reviews you see these days talk about the bike wandering during climbing as they couldn't get their weight over the front enough.... This would solve I guess but it still seems super sketchy
  • 1 0
well it does makes sense, just adjust saddle/pedaling position based on the longest position.
it doesn't matter for the other positions since you'll be standing on the pedals
  • 3 1
So i suppose dropper posts don't make sense to you either, right?
  • 1 0
Reach still matters when you're standing. More so if it's too close. There is a reason DH bikes have a longer top center than xc bikes. Reach is designed into the stem length that's likely to be used.
  • 1 0
Look at new xc bikes though for example the fsi.... long top tube and a long stem
  • 2 0
I'd be super scared of the stem sliding off the end after an impact
  • 2 0
Can i get a direct mount for my DH rig?
  • 3 0
 WTF!!! oh HELLS no!!
  • 2 0
Bar Ends for additional reach when climbing . Still works .
  • 1 0
I was wondering about that - it seems like between my first period of mountain biking (early/mid 90s) until I got back into the sport (2010), bar ends completely disappeared. I remember riding with them and that it was the only way to get up those damn hills back then. And then there were gone when I came back to the sport - and I didn't miss them a bit. This thing is supposed to add over four inches of reach (plus move the bar lower in the process, too) - that's massive, right up there with bar ends in terms of effect on your posture and weight balance. Frankly, on a modern trail bike, I'm not sure getting that far bent over forward will help you climb that much better. Being that stretched out and low, sure, for gravel roads that might be fine - but climbing on anything resembling a trail, I just don't see it.
  • 1 0
I never stopped using them , I have a 40mm stem I can reach out to any distance I need to increase power to the pedals on climbs . And have all the benefits of the 40mm stem on the way back down .
  • 1 0
huge benefits if it comes to air drag if you put on a numberplate!
and btw what about adjustable bottombrackets?
  • 1 0
take the lock mechanism out, jam some elastomers in it and put it on a swing bike.
  • 1 0
Adjustable travel that's it peeps best idea.... ohh someone already thought of it, damm
  • 2 2
yea but most people seem too proud to use it.
  • 1 0
if one likes miles of cables on ones bike fine, i prefer clean cockpit less is more , suit yourself
  • 2 0
Stem shouldn't move ever and forever!
  • 1 0
One more remote control and hose on the handle bar, soon more complicated than an Airbus cockpit.
  • 1 0
there is a market for all...take it easy, money can buy everything...also mostly stupid things!
  • 1 0
its a good thing for bike fitting and nothing else! Who would trust it????
  • 1 0
Anyone else got a dropper post that has develop ghe usual 2-3mm of play ??

Can't wait to have that on my bars too !!!
  • 2 0
 What about remote adjustable cranks?
  • 2 0
Rally? are you riding on a tandem? with a Copilot giving you instructions?
  • 2 0
Some comment gold on this one
  • 2 0
The Dubstep at the end convinced me
  • 2 0
I want one. But I'll be waiting for the SPD version. For no reason.
  • 1 0
we need wheels that you can take a little air our of while riding or add more while riding
  • 1 0
It looks like an accident waiting to happen. It also looks like it will flex a lot.
  • 1 0
Next they will invent one for the seat mount for full stretch mode...sorry I don't mean to give anyone ideas!! ha ha
  • 1 1
My idea is adjustable handle bars. Like a dropper post except the bars extend in or out. Wide for bombing downhill and narrow for tight tree sections.
  • 1 0
It looks like a sawed off shotgun pointing down on the trail - load it with shells and you can shoot rabbits as you ride.
  • 1 0
good or bad whatever it looks shit. besides when you crash you smash up your top tube.
  • 2 0
Interesting but the construction looks awful.
  • 2 0
If you race XC this might be a bigger deal than the seat post!
  • 2 0
Set backwards and you have a wheelie good stem!
  • 1 0
Oh,it's such a useful production that I can't find any sense in the adjustable stem.
  • 2 0
 no way in hell !!!
  • 1 0
Perhaps some Viagra is in order?
