It’s grim up north they say….you’re right, it might be grim up north – but we bloody love it!

What better way to test our nicely designed and manufactured Hope Cranks than to send two of the most stylish riders we know out to play in the “grim” northern countryside.

Hope riders Sam Flanagan and (new recruit) Craig Evans have played a vital part in the testing phase of development of the Hope Cranks. Having riders who are as tuned in with their bike, as Sam and Craig, has allowed us to monitor the performance of our Hope Cranks in, let's say some of the “grimest” of conditions….

We set Sam and Craig the task of testing the Hope Cranks over a few days. The only condition being – no matter how grim it got they had to keep pedalling….

First up was Helvellyn. Now some might think, Helvellyn…in January…? I think Sam and Craig thought the same once up there!

Day 1:
Helvellyn hike-a-bike + Swirral’s edge + snow + 100mph winds = failed attempt

Swirral Edge wasn’t necessarily the problem… it was the 100mph gusts in the “dip of doom” which caused the guys some issues, spoiling the prospects of a Stick’s Pass descent.

Day 2:
Helvellyn + Sticks Pass…

Whilst the winds had died down the snow certainly hadn’t disappeared. Opting for a “safer” ascent and descent up Stick’s Pass the boys found the riding conditions were probably just as testing as the previous day.

Hail, snow and ice made the descents a little tricky!

Day 3:
Wharncliffe Woods

Day three and the boys moved slightly south in search of fairer climates, woods and a little bit of dirt. If you’ve seen the edit 26aintdead, then you’ll know that Craig is no stranger to Wharncliffe woods, what better place for the boys to finish the testing.

It can be damn grim up north, but we reckon it's a pretty solid testing ground!

Call me fat or any sort of relation to that word again and I will successfully sue you for 8.23 million dollars in court. Try me, mother fucker. Merica.

This has very little to do with the vid but I thought I'd just put it out there, Hope please make all you components available to everyone in team green, I'm green with envy when I see all the team riders with their pimped out team green components! Such a rad color, and the fact that I can't have makes me want it more.
  • + 10
Dig that DVO Diamond fork too! Looks a good match to the Hope clad Yeti.
  • + 3
As if thats going to happen.
  • + 1
Ya probably not, but hey doesn't hurt to put it out there.
  • + 14
I have absolutely no idea what was going on for the first half of this movie.
  • + 20
Clearly it's some sort of English dialect .....Not the Colony English you're used to.
  • + 5
@justincs That had something to do with it, but it may have also had something to do with the GoPro audio, talking through a face mask, shot during a 100mph wind storm.

i understand what you're saying, but i have no idea what you're saying. yinz guys are rippin the shit outta that snow. let the liquor do the thinkin, bo-bandy.
  • + 8
Normally you get a video with sweet adventure or a video with filthy good shredding. This video you get both. Beautiful. Hope puts out great media content, definitely says something about the brand. If you put this much effort into product videos, you obviously put a lot of effort into the product as well.
  • + 13
Lets Give @SteelCityMedia the props they deserve too! Consistently brilliant videos.
  • + 12
Proper Northerners... Wicked banter...Great video... Smile
  • + 11
When I think of Shefield I think of Def Leppard.
  • + 12
 That was awesome!!
  • + 8
It's grim OOP north. Get it right!. Razz

P.s. to whom it may concern: Scotland isn't really oop north. It's another country.
  • + 6
I thought they voted No thx on that!
  • + 2
Agreed - it's 'reet grim oop nurth' Scotland isn't country.
  • + 3
Wildlings north of the wall... You know nuffin' Jon Snow!

  • + 6
Best video on pinkbike for some time.
  • + 4
Wow, no one could have predicted all the Scots chiming in with "That's not really the north is it?" comments could they?!

Just wait until the highlanders log on! Wink
  • + 6
Why is this not VOD... wait VOY?!
  • + 4
i also like to ride in most weather conditions but my buddies dont so i have to go solo most the time.. gotta love the trails when no ones there but you
  • + 3
Yes!! This makes me proud to be northern! The south can shove its posh pints and good weather where the sun don't shine, this is England!
  • + 1
Oh the irony of telling us to shove our good weather where the sun don't shine! Up north? Sounds like you want better weather! Wink
  • + 1
You make a good point! As they put it, it's character building up here Smile
  • + 3
Very cool video, but sorry Hope, your cranks is still ugly and overpriced for what is it.
  • + 0
This. And, is having "stylish" riders ride your cranks REALLY the best way to test them? Or anything, for that matter? I couldn't get over that.
  • + 2
Haha reminds me of our snow ride up high street ( highest roman road in uk) full sideways action . I wonder how many times they fell off coz I know we had a lot of offs..
  • + 1
The saying 'Its grim up north' has always been about North England. But to be fair to the jocks complaining, Scotland is the biggest council estate in England so i do get where the confusion is coming from.
  • + 3
What a bunch of Northern Monkeys. Loved it.... Pinned riding at the end too, need to head back over to Wharncliffe.
  • + 0
A 9.5 min. video where the the biking doesn't even begin until 6 min. Into it? We are all used to the MTB videos where the action doesn't start until 1/3 of the way in, but this has to be a first.
  • + 3
More Steel City Media videos on Pinkbike please Smile
  • + 1
More aluminum cranks with aluminum threads. Wrong material for the component. Technology is still lagging behind when it comes to cranks.
  • + 3
Mint video that, good banter good riding. Hurricance gina pa ha ha
  • + 3
Those two are beating the hell out of those beautiful bikes!
  • + 3
 Bloody Hell!!! Great fun, Eh!
  • + 1
As a promotional video for a new crankset, I'd have liked to have seen a bit more pedaling !

Would have loved to see more Wharncliffe shredding. Great video but it did suck that most of the video was them carrying their bikes uphill....
  • + 1
