It's YT Industries - Exclusive Gwin Interview

Fans speculated wildly for over a month about where the hottest property in mountain bike racing would end up after Aaron Gwin broke the news in a Pinkbike interview last December, that he and Specialized could not come to a financial agreement for the 2016 racing season - and that he had signed another deal. Now, it's official. In the following exclusive video interview, Aaron announces that YT Industries is his title sponsor and that he will be racing for a new team, owned and managed by Martin Whiteley, the same man who Gwin raced for during his record-breaking winning streak with Trek World Racing. Aaron will be joined by Angel Suarez Alonso, a young Phenom from Spain who raced his first full World Cup series last year under the Intense flag.

Why YT?

Many insiders were hinting that YT would be Gwin's new team, but logic, dollars, and the fact that Aaron has raced for the sport's most legendary names, strongly suggested that Aaron would headline a mega-brand in 2016. You wouldn't be alone with your presumption if the YT deal caught you by surprise. Those familiar with YT, however, know that the letters are an acronym for "Young Talent" and that the brand was founded upon gravity and freestyle riding, and devoted to providing up-and-coming riders with race-worthy bikes at attainable prices. According to Gwin, he and Angel will be riding the same carbon Tues (say: Too' - ez) that YT sells to the public - which is quite a performer according to both Gwin and PB's Mike Kazimer.

bigquotesLiterally, every change that I wanted to make to my last bike, geometry wise, was where their bike was now. I kind of had a laugh at that.

Supporting Sponsors

Gwin's choice to join forces with a maverick, direct-sales bike brand from Germany with little World Cup DH experience raises as many questions as its announcement puts to rest. And, if the YT deal failed to pique your curiosity, a quick read of the team's melting pot of supporting sponsors will.

One of the luxuries of being at the top of your game, is being able to pick and choose your sponsors. That said, most of the usual suspects, like Shimano, SRAM, RockShox, DT Swiss, Schwalbe, Maxxis, Easton and Enve do not appear on the roster. YT will be supplying their Carbon Tues chassis, suspension will be Fox Factory, with e*Thirteen wheels and drivetrain parts, Onza tires, TRP brakes, Renthal cockpit items, SDG saddles, Motorex chemical products, and ODI grips. Gwin's personal sponsors are Alpinestars clothing, Red Bull, Troy Lee Design helmets, Giro shoes, HT pedals, Smith Goggles and KTM motorcycles. It is an eclectic mix of seasoned World Cup competitors and up-and-coming brands that will probably need some hand-holding to get up to speed.

Team Owner Martin Whiteley

Gwin's ace in the hole is Martin Whiteley. When Whitely assembled the G Cross Honda team, the automotive giant's prototype RN01 was the only mountain bike it had ever built, its roller-chain gearbox was untested, and its one-off suspension was made by Showa Japan. Riders Greg Minnaar, Matti Lehikoinen and Brendan Fairclough were fresh-faced kids who must have been culture-shocked by the military secrecy of Japanese style racing. But, G Cross Honda podiumed regularly, and earned the constructors' championship twice in a row. By contrast, the corporate sterility that surrounded Whiteley's Trek World Racing team must have seemed like an easy gig, but Gwin's back-to-back World Cup series titles proved that whatever may come, Whiteley can keep a pro-level racing program on point.

Racing for Intense, Angel Suarez Alonso put in a respectable 16th place at Leogang last year - his first season as a World Cup competitor. The stylish Spanish rider was selected by Whiteley and will be Gwin's teammate and understudy.

bigquotesI have always had a passion for helping the younger kids. I'm trying to give somebody a shot that I feel deserves one and could really take it far. I was just one of those kids a few years ago. Somebody gave me a shot - and here I am.

Final Thoughts:

Gwin and Team YT are scheduled to debut their full kits and race bikes early this week, which we were not allowed to show you, and we are sure to discover more details of the program then. For now, we can only speculate how Aaron and Angel will fare as the first World Cup approaches this spring. I have huge respect for YT founder and CEO Markus Flossmann's grasp of the gravity side of the sport - YT lives it. The diversity of the team's sponsors could become an issue, but far less of one than may have been so in Gwin's earlier years. Aaron seems to have matured considerably in the past two seasons. He has won victories in spite of bad luck and shaky team dynamics, and done so aboard a variety of bikes. He comes to Team YT squarely in the driver's seat, and carrying a lot of momentum. If Aaron comes out swinging for the fence again (and there is little doubt that he will), even if he doesn't win right away, 2016 is going to be incredibly entertaining. - RC

Too right, that marketing practically sells itself. I can picture the t-shirt now, with Aaron's face on with just the word 'Schwinning' on it.

"YT DOESN'T HAVE THE MONEY! THEY'RE NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR GWIN!" - 90% of PB commentators. Oh this is fantastic, haha. Let's hope this goes better than what Coreupt tried to pull off because YT is preeeetty sick.

take anybrand.. ANY brand out there, how many of them have the riders and bikes that yt has?

YT is the new kid on the block, and i will buy myself a tues later on this year, if its good for Andreu, Cam, KellY.. its a beast

Didn't see that one coming!
  • + 39
 especially the Onza tires! o.O
  • + 14
Aye those were definitely not brands to be expected!
Onza tyres though will be interesting me.... I have their Citius on my DH bike and they grip like a bitch but are not in the least bit durable (which I suppose doesn't matter to a pro). Hopefully Gwin running them won't make the cost fly up as they have been half price on Evans Cycles for like ever!
  • + 5
Best Bang-for-Buck tyres out there IMO!
  • + 18
Does anyone on the WC use TRP brakes? I remember they didn't get the best review.
  • + 39
He'll probably ride blacked out maxxis tires at the races anyways...
  • + 19
Did I miss something? Who's supplying the derailleur and shifter? Or is he going chainless?
  • + 6
In the pics they're both running Sram X01DH but perhaps e*thirteen is bringing out a shifter and derailleur to match their cassettes?
  • + 3
Just seems odd - I guess they couldn't reach a financial agreement with either SRAM or shimano for those parts, but both companies probably wanted to supply more if they were going to be involved.
  • + 5
Magura brakes would've been cool as they're another small german company. But fuck them, they don't even deserve him for their crappy customer service. The MT7 rules however.
  • + 18
Funny if he shows up with Onza Porcupine tires.
  • + 29
They just paid the most. He'll ride any shit for the $$$
  • + 8
E thirteen wheels hey? I wonder how those will hold up when he rides them without a tire. Judging by my friend's experience and comments on this site, after the tire free and chain free run, we might get a hub free run. That said, when they work, they seam to work a charm.
  • + 3
It will be interesting with Onza tyres. You can win on a trolley as long as you have quality rubber and brakes.
  • + 20
Last year I contacted Onza (Swiss based) and asked on tire advice for a local race. They were familiar with the track and answered multi times super friendly and informative. Great customer support For The (G)Win!

YT, Fox, Renthal...makes a lot of sense.

Onza, E13, TRP w/ a smattering of SRAM drive train components....seems like the end of the year sale special I put together every year with whatever I can find on blowout clearance.
  • + 7
The biggest make or break change seems to be going from DT Swiss EX 471s to E-Thirteen rims and hubs. At least he'll be very loud and you can hear him coming from around a corner because of his loud freehub.
  • + 2
 Thanks @hamncheez , didn't know that Smile
  • + 17
Hamncheez, Gwin said that they were buying SRAM drivetrain components retail for the team.
  • + 29
@RichardCunningham would you mind giving @YTIndustries a shout for me and letting them know that if they're buying their sram parts at retail I'll happy cut them a deal on the gear I buy off CRC....?
  • + 35
After reading these replies, I think Gwin should have got a Sharpie deal too.
  • + 20
Ive been quietly testing onza ibex dh tyres for 2 years now,and for slow, wimpy cornering and low air jumping at embarrassingly low speed they are great.ill leave the rest to Gwin to sort out.
  • + 4
TRP brake - My guess it would be the Slate... 4 piston?

Interesting to see one of the big guns use the non-standard S* company (Sram Shim) stuff. Have a feeling everyone will be paying close attention to any mechanical issues.

The Onza reviews I have found this morning seem to all say the compounds are great in the dry and wet, and the tread pattern looks very Minion-esque.

Yea robaussie, and each order will be messed up. CRC screwed almost every single order I made, one of them had 3 items in it! They still fkd it. Bike-components.de is the sht

" Just seems odd - I guess they couldn't reach a financial agreement with either SRAM or shimano for those parts, but both companies probably wanted to supply more if they were going to be involved."

Clearly neither Shimano or SRAM thought he was worth whatever he was demanding and said no.

There is a pattern here.

Big bike brand don't think he is worth what he wanted
SRAM don't think he is worth what he wanted, and actually are getting his team to pay for kit
Shimano don't think he is worth what he wanted.
Big tyre manufactures don't think he is worth signing
  • + 1
@scoot34 well you've sold them, turns out we have very similar riding styles!
  • + 4
Shimano and SRAM are unlikely to sponsor a team to use a rear mech and shifter, they want a better brand representation, E.13 providing cranks probably prevented a deal from happening.
  • + 1
@Aar0nW, i dare say that the bad press of making a big player like Gwin buy his own derailleurs is far more damaging than just sponsoring him for the same kit.
  • + 4
@robaussie99 i guess you can look at it a numer of ways, but if he was sponsored by SRAM people might assume that E.13 cranks are better as even though he is sponsored by SRAM he chooses the E.13 crank and not the X0 DH crank.
  • + 5
Weird WAKI, I orderded over 20 times at CRC and never had a single issue.
  • + 10
@robaussie99 , quite the contrary in fact. This is a quite a boost for SRAM.

The best rider in the world, given no sponsorship affiliation, chose SRAM mechanicals over Shimano...AND HE IS GOING TO PAY FOR THEM!!!!!

You can't buy good press like that.
  • + 3
Clearly E-THIRTEEN will be making shifters and derailleurs very soon. I bet we'll see these before WC starts.
  • + 2
I often think that some athletes, like gwin, are so talented that what they ride doesn't mean much. They could and just may, ride shitty gear, and compensate for it with pure talent and skill.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns I'm with you there. CRC screwed up an order in which it would have been cheaper to just send me the correct item and forfeit the worthless one they sent by mistake. But no they went down the long and difficult path and never took responsibility for the screw up. Other friends have asked specifically for consignments to be attached on the outside so customs don't sting them unnecessarily. Still can't f*cking manage to do it.

bike-discount.de is your well oiled German version of CRC
  • + 1
After the 3 item order being messed up aa tube and 2 rims, (they forgot the second frickin rim) being like 3rd in a row they gave me a 10£ voucher... Valid for 7 days... Hahah. I ordered nearly a complete bike at bike-components, including spokes of various lengths - No problem
  • + 1
@warehouse at the highest level where fractions of a second make a difference between making the podium or coming tenth you need the best kit.
  • + 1
 Good point
  • + 2
Yea thenotourismic - only the best of the best or you don't win. Right! Like having the air-sprung suspension in gravity fed discipline, with additional friction and less consistent spring rate and damping. Or carbon rims, which are simply too stiff, or Remy Thirion winning in Andorra on Formula brakes. Or riding chainless...
  • + 1
That's not really true is it though. The new dh air shocks are close to matching the best coils and if you don't have to worry about the maintainability and you happen to be the kind of rider who likes a firm set up then there wouldn't be a reason to pick coil over air. Have you seen dirts piece on chainless bikes? It's on the website now.
  • - 1
They are close but they are not as good. Because they can't be. I've been indoctrinated by two different suspension people, with one answer: it's physics, there is more unwanted resistance and no possibility to bring negative effects of heat build up down to the level of coil. It will always be there. Also for an average rider, even sag setup is problematic issue on air shocks since it is not only about putting the o-ring at desired place on the shaft. Different air springs require different SAG. Everything is just simplier with coil. Everything. That is the actual difference the average Joe feels if he can look beyond the hype. XC - air shocks no doubt, Enduro - maybe, DH - just stop drinking the kitchen scale cool aid for a moment...

Cool article BTW!
  • + 3
If what you are saying was true, it would be the other way round, being that DH runs are rather short and heat buildup isn't a real problem. Enduro runs however are sometimes over 20min runs and nearly as rough, which makes heat build up much more of a problem. My experience with the Vivid Air shock in DH was just great and not hard to dial in at all. I tested it against my stock RC4 and preferred the feel of the air shock. I also liked the weight benefit and adjustability over the coil shocks. And one more seriously annoying thing I hated about coil shocks was the constant noise of the inside of the coil rubbing against the outside of the shock body, which every coilshock I ever used developed over time. So I guess it comes down to personal preference after all. I'm Air shock all the way!
  • + 0
I don't give a tiniest fk... I just want people to give me sht for free. Otherwise I chose something that is easy to setup, cheap and easy to maintain. I don't have time to fk with it. Latest breed of super air shocks doesn't fit such picture. Give me Float X2 or Ohlins STX and I'll be more than happy about it but I ain't paying for that.
  • + 1
Most downhill racers are still running coils anyway so it's not really an issue. When there's fractions of a second deciding results its pretty obvious that top performing components are going to make a big difference and where the rider finishes.
  • + 1
The issue is that we don't know which components are the best performing and riders rarely have access to what they would like themselves. It is unlikely that riders would go for carbon rims. Sponsorship dictates the choice. Look at how personal the brake choice is, but top racers just don't have that choice. If Minnaar feels better on Guides, he can't use them. Currently riders and mechanics are not relying on data acquisition during the races (at least most top guys don't) so it's also blurry. Most riders ride stock frames. This is not F1, where each factor has 2 engineers on it, year round. Where world champion has driving coaches analyzing each thing he does. It is is cycling for chickens sake, It will never be like that, it doesn't need to.
  • + 1

  • + 6
will gwin sponsorship will affect the price of the bike ?
  • + 6
If anything a reverse effect. As Gwin is a major sign it could bring up popularity of YT and the prices creep downward. Hopefully. YT doesnt seem like one of those companies to do that *Cough* Specialized *Cough!*
  • + 3
You have to wonder how much per bike you pay for a top level team.
  • + 4
Check the lead time in getting any of the YT bikes... months out if not more than half a year. I think even the rumors leading up to today have made a difference.
  • + 1
To me YT's recent developments have been fascinating. And now they've got an even more stacked roster of riders and a World Cup presence. They're coming on strongly but their products are still catered to a minority of mountain bikers.

I think this continues to build brand awareness and legitimacy en route to a trail bike release that will compete in the most sought after part of the market, against the Stumpys, Remedys, Bronsons, etc. The sh*t is going to fly once their trail bike comes out. Better make that first order from Taiwan a massive one or there'll be a 12-month backlog for the customer. Stoked for Gwin and the whole YT family, as well as their future projects in the pipeline. Ride in peace McGazza, 2016 is for you!

Love hearing this.
  • + 14
Why YT? I think Gwin has made that abundantly clear already in what he has said over the past few months. He had a value in mind for his services and YT (and the rest of his supporting sponsors) were the companies apparently willing to meet those terms.

All this other stuff about the bike, and the team, the brand whatever else is just fluff. Its meaningless. If Specialized or any other company had offered more money he'd be riding that bike. This is a business after all and that's how this stuff works and no one should get on him for doing whats best for him. By most accounts the YT is a really good bike, but to think that Gwin's #1 preference is to be on Onza tires and TRP brakes seems a little ridiculous. I have no idea how good these products are as I've never ridden then, but given tho choice no top rider is going to pick those as part of their kit.
  • + 14
While I share the cynicism with Gwin simply going with the highest bidder I saw something else in that video. He wants to influence product development and large companies aren't as willing and able to make changes to their products without a lot of red-tape. If I was one of the top riders in the business that is exactly what I would look for (besides da money). I saw more power to him...that would be really fun!!!

Also, it's not like he's riding Paul V-Brakes and 45North tires.
  • + 1
Have to agree with sino428. It was all about the money requirement as Gwin stated months back as to why he was leaving Specialized.
  • + 1
I agree about the money but you have to remember that he is only as good as his last result, so the product choice has to be something he thinks he can win on. What do you think it would do for YT if he had a season of top 30's or DNF's.
  • + 1
Of course, but given the slew of bikes out there. My experience is that if the geometry is pretty much the same between bikes, they feel the same except maybe how the shock is damped or maybe slight stiffness variations. Other than that really, they just look different. Now go ride a high pivot bike, and now you will have a different feeling bike. 1000 times better in our opinion.
  • + 16
 who the hell is TRP?
  • + 8

  • + 7
seriously? whatever, he wont need them anyway..
  • + 11
ah a sly rebranding to avoid the negative association we all have with their shitty V-brakes
  • + 4
Brake and chain is irrelevant for Gwin Smile
  • + 2
and their even more crappy cantilever brakes bitd
  • + 10
This is awesome, I'm surprised but not blown away. With Cam Zink being the big man for YT in the US it makes a lot of sense to me for both of them. I've heard their bikes are great and hopefully Gwin can show it to more people. Gwin also got the chance to basically build his own team which is probably awesome for him. What I am really surprised about is Martin Whiteley, I'm excited to see what they can do together over the next few years! well that and the drivetrain/brakes are really surprising
  • + 1
Yeah same here, its exciting seeing some fresh gear out there with the fastest guy on it. Other than Honda which they referred to I cant think of it ever happening before? Good on him
  • + 3
@mtbtacolover I'm surprised to see Gwin back with Whitley considering how their breakup went down back at the end of the Trek days.
  • + 2
 Time heals all.
  • + 3
He's probably only signed a letter of intent with yt/whiteley. The big scoop will be in two weeks when Gwin announces his canyon/o'neal/yamaha deal.
  • + 13
Aaron Gwin is the consummate professional. Angel hit the jackpot with his new mentor.
  • - 4
flag likeittacky (Feb 8, 2016 at 17:40) (Below Threshold)
The way you use the word consummate, sounds like your suggesting something perverted. BAD CHOICE OF WORDS!!!
  • + 9
That 25 minute video doesn't actually exist- they knew nobody would give a sh*t by the time they finally announced it so it's just a link to Friday's episode of Eastenders on Iplayer.
  • + 1
Fuck..that's some speed right there roll on the Wc and all the non believers getting sickened
  • + 9
I think it's great. Hopefully YT will shift a LOAD of units and bikeworld will have to take a harder look at its pricing/route to market.
  • + 8
Well well well, Hope he doesn't crack the frame early in the season or he'll be waiting for a replacement for weeks!! oh wait, they may answer his calls?
  • + 9
Bigbest winner from this deal must be Onza tyres getting into the WC podium?
  • + 6
As long as he does get on the podium (which is a pretty safe bet really). If there is even the slightest implication that the tyres aren't up to the job though, Onza is screwed. People will be quick to blame everything on the rubber (or any of the other non mainstream parts). Its make or break for those guys I reckon.
  • + 1
if he doesn't podium this year the reason will be tha tyres, the wheels or the brakes. there are a lot of key parts of that bike that are not dhwc proven
  • + 3
Can you really blame wheels for not making the podium? I know that some brands of wheels are considered better than others but that mostly comes down to the quality and durability of the wheels, not the actual performance. Any high end wheelset is going to perform pretty much the same so long as it doesn't break in the middle of the race.
  • + 2
The frame isn't world cup proven either.
  • + 10
combination with Martin Whitley can only be a good thing
  • + 5
Whitely and Gwin reunited. I think this is bigger than Gwin and YT. This shit just got real. I don't care about the deals and whatever. Can't wait for the results!! I wonder how they'd paint the rainbow stripes on that bike at the end of the season.
  • + 6
"There was literally every change I was going to make to my last bike" I think YT is going to sell some serious number of bikes after that words...
  • + 5
So happy Jon is staying as his mechanic.

On a separate note does Aaron have any sorth of engineering degree? Or is his experience only empirical? Nothing wrong with that, just curious
  • + 6
cant say, it was unexpected, but congrats to both sides ! I hope Aaron will kill it on a new rig,I also cant wait to see some crazy World cup races !
  • + 8
Annnnnnnd, you can all get back to work now!
  • + 4
I watched the video it was interesting to hear the background of the team build up, equipment choices etc. I didn't know him well but I like his attitude he looks like a really genuine guy.
  • + 7
More athletes should conduct themselves professionally like him.
  • + 3
 It's called "Dignity".
  • + 6
Do I read between the lines that Specialized didn't want to make the changes he wanted to the Demo?
  • + 5
I didn't see a wind tunnel in the background but I think YT is about to expload. Congratulations Gwin and YT. This is going to be one he'll of a year.
  • + 6
So now they'll be able to afford producing an XL frame?
  • + 4
So the fastest guy on the circuit does not have a full-on drivetrain sponsor, or are E*Thirteen gonna spit out derailleurs and shifters soon?
  • + 3
So he wanted different geometry....but there's bugger all difference between the Tues and Demo....I was considering both before I got my Tues Same HA CS within 5mm Stack very close Reach similar BB height similar
  • + 1
 Price?
  • + 5
Are you talking the old demo or the new one?
I didn't compare them to the YT so I honestly wouldn't know, but it would certainly be no surprise if the new demo, which kinda has his input implemented already, ended up being the same... Cause that's what he was actually saying.
  • + 1
Talking the carbon 650B 2015/2016 bikes...
  • + 2
YT haters be like "NO WAY YT CAN AFFORD GWIN! YT IS TOO SMALL OF A COMPANY!"
if you want your company to get big you have to take the risk to hire the BEST. now to all of the YT haters out there, can you shut up now on that YT is a small company bandwagon? =)
  • + 4
We will be entertained....... It would be awesome to see Gwinn and this kid take podiums like Gwinn was with troynon the past 2 seasons
  • + 2
So Gwin does to Specialised what he did to Martin Whitely after he left TWR! (no loss there, big S ) And now hes back again with Martin Whitely!

"Literally, every change so I can get as much money as possible! I kind of had a laugh at that"

Well I have even more respect for Martin Whitely, for the crap he took 3 years ago and has been able to overcome that and rework with Gwin, shows money is bigger than God in this example!
  • + 2
if he can get the coin good on him go for it downhill aint that big of apaying sport
  • + 3
Just want to say this isn't the largest deal in downhill racing history. Palmer was paid 700K for one year in the 90s by Specialized. Adjusted for inflation I'm confident that was the biggest deal.
  • + 2
It was a little under that, But yes, With inflation and what he was getting from Fox, Mountian Dew, Manitou, Magura etc. He did very well for a year..But then the bottom dropped out for him and almost all others. I just remember with complete disbelief that within 2 years the top guys went from semi-trucks as team vehicles to Brian Lopes and others driving themselves in with a van.
  • + 1
It was crazy how fast it dropped off. I used to go to Big Bear a lot back then and the races were crazy, a lot of money there. Then it was just gone for the most part.
  • + 2
"Literally, every change that I wanted to make to my last bike, geometry wise, was where their bike was now. I kind of had a laugh at that."

This quote makes me happy! Big Grin

You know you built up some bad karma when your ex-athletes say this in public interviews (Specialized Bikes)
  • + 4
What a massive breakthrough for Alonso. A young prodigy chosen for a brand-new team with the exiled champion? It's practically a movie. He must be ecstatic.
  • + 5
Love the music choice from the video, guys. Subtle tribute to Mirra - nice work.
  • + 2
Truthfully never thought this would happen. As I didn't think he could get the money etc buy it's pretty epic love seeing big names take a risk and hopefully we will get some sick yt videos combining the best of dh and freeride edits mixed up for our eyeballs to enjoy
  • + 1
We'll never know if he did get the money he wanted. But, the mans gotta ride a bike right.
He'll be too busy riding hisktm to make any sick bike videos Wink
  • + 4
Good luck to the YT WC Team! Think it's great that these dudes are stepping up and taking on the big boys!
YT Tues = YT Do It!
  • + 4
Wow...that shop in the first pic is so pristine and white that at first I thought it was a kitchen with some motos and a vise!
  • + 2
I was checking out the garage too. Looks good!
  • + 1
My garage looks like that. Well it does have slatwall, is white and has that crappy orange Harbor Freight bench grinder.
  • + 6
YT is making some of the best lookin bike on the market.
  • + 6
Dang. Though he was riding for muddy fox. Never saw this coming. Smile
  • + 4
I was betting on Carrera Razz
  • + 4
Na, a rider like Gwin would get the full Bikehut factory ride. The best Voodoo money can buy!
  • + 6
Im going to guess 1,000+ comments on here all saying the same thing.
  • + 6
 Looks like a trek
  • + 2
i was expecting meh from the top to the bottom of the comment section. I m actually very happy to see Gwin ride for a brand new team, it will be interesting to watch
  • - 1
actually think they stole the chain/seatstays from an old demo???
  • + 5
I never thought I'd say this, but GO ON GWIN SON!
  • + 1
Also fair play to Gwins drive for more cash.at the end of the day these guys lay it on the line every ride and the lifespan of being on the top isn't really that long so why complain about his want to fill his account so he can enjoy life after his career? Also who gives a shit what his wage is it's sad people need this type of shit to gossip about
  • + 2
it would really suck if some of the new not well known but super pationate brand parts malfunctioned in some way during a race causing gwin bad result or some unlucky crash.
  • + 1
I'm a YT fan, and am already looking to get the jersey! I love that giant YT logo and would love to have a new kit to ride in. It's not too flashy for a non-pro like me, and I won't feel too lame hucking to flat off .5 meter drops at Mammoth in a kit like that! Smile
  • + 4
eh eh! let´s see a small bike brand crushing the others big brands in the world cup!!!
  • + 3
Nice to see that he rides the bike set up with many of the components regular customers get when buying one instead of swapping all of them out like some teams do!
  • + 5
Hey TRP can I rebuild your website? Could use some modern design/UI
  • + 1
 Please build one for Hadley
  • + 1
That background music in between interviews...it's stuck in my head and driving me insane like Trump. That, and the fact that he's going to use Tektro brakes on a downhill track. Then again, no brakes = no slowing down. Yay!
  • + 3
So it's official now: we have start commenting on something else Big Grin

BTW: the background shadows from light guy are awesome Smile
  • + 8
HA! ^^^ The overcast broke up and the sun reflected off the windscreen of Gwin's truck and blasted into his garage. We didn't catch it right off
  • + 4
Subliminal message @ 0.43sec. - 'Failure:Transition too short for a good result". There's a hidden meaning somewhere here.
  • + 2
Just paused to check it out too! I don't get it, but I d like an ice-cream anyhow! Wink
  • + 1
Pretty sure this is a legit failure message from the video editing software. I guess we can't blame the producer for the delayed press release as this was clearly rushed out the door. Wink
  • + 1
And here I thought maybe it was sabotage message claiming Transition bikes have too short of a wheelbase to win or something!
  • + 1
yes leader Gwin, I will buy your entire line of YT bikes
  • + 1
Just woke up from a nap, where I was having this dream: Around the keg at the party at YT Headquarters: yannick, bryan, angel and andreu are at the keg laughing & carrying on. Gwin walks in the room... andreu speaks up: “hey man we are all going to go hit some sick jumps tomorrow afternoon, wanna come?” dead silence... luckily just then, cam zink returns from the restroom and then all is well, everyone gets along. later that night angel is naked, back flipping off the deck into the pool, and gwin thinks to himself “young talent” wth have I got myself into?
  • + 4
TRP brakes, lets see how they do in Leogang this time
  • + 3
What...so we are just confirming what a bunch of random people have been saying for 6 months?
  • + 2
Gonna be fun season gonna be weird rooting for Gwin. The kid kinda won me over a bit I must admit even though I'm more of a Ratboy fan. Neg me now.
  • + 1
Good look YT, this guy has a habit of slagging off his former employers when he leaves. I was always taught never to burn your bridges no matter how disgruntled you are. Looks like this guy hasnt been taught the same thing.
  • + 1
It's about time he announces his sponsorships! The biking community has waiting long enough!!! I can't wait to see how Gwin performs this season. YT's sales are about to go through the roof tup
  • + 1
I'm far less likely to buy one.
  • + 4
 Props for the jingle *Gangstarr*!!!!
  • + 1
boulevard connection-copenhagen claimin respect 2 used the same sample...one of the sickest masta ace verses
  • + 2
BFD. The man is fast on a beach cruiser. The name on the frame doesn't matter. This has already been proven. It's not about the bike, but the rider behind the bars.
  • + 3
 3 year contract...
Ok,people, bets are open. What will Gwin be riding in 2019??
  • + 1
YT is gunna be so sick long term. these two guys are incredibly talented not saying everyone else isn't but especially Gwin i think we will finally see the true Aaron Gwin on this team.
  • + 5
 meh...
  • + 1
The only crappy thing about this whole deal is that when Gwinn starts winning races, we'll have to listen to that pompous ass Martin Whiley giving interviews. Ugh. Thought we got rid of him.
  • + 1
Great interview and spot on with his choices of equipment, we got to remember gwins no fool and knows when gear is good. It will be great see him rip trails apart soon it's gonna be a great season.
  • + 2
Specialized's reputation is blowing in the wind tunnel.
Gwin schooling everyone on how to be a human being. #futureofthesport
  • + 4
I really love the yt. I really hope he does it justice this season.
  • + 1
during the interview I had quite a lot of time inspecting Gwins' "shed".. Interesting to see him having these nice RC cars and the PORSCHE PARKING ONLY sign in the back...
  • - 1
Made it through 3 minutes of that interview and got bored, wish it was a 30 min ratboy interview. BTW YT should have spent their money on production, i mean why hire a top athelete to sell your product when you are always out of stock? When the public get tired of yt and the next big thing comes along they will wish they had kept their shelves full when they had the chance. At least Gwin isn't a sell out hes a SOLD OUT?
  • + 1
i am a Gwinn fan but i do hope that Loic crushes him this year. consumer direct is only possible cuz dealers and legit brands built this industry
  • + 3
Wake up world , YT is a Mega Brand .
  • + 1
good move, all the best downhill and freeriders are with YT, Andreu, Cam Zink, the late and legend McGazza, so its time for Gwin to join them.
  • + 2
 Nobody else said it?
I thought it was the standard PB response.
Looks like a ......
  • + 3
was that sound guy standing there just ignoring the peaking audio?
  • + 2
Why is there no specific mention of Fox suspension in any of the press releases or interviews?
  • + 1
Now that was a great interview! Good questions. Quite honest answers from Gwin i believe. Next season will be entertaining. That is for sure.
  • + 2
Kind of bummed we finally got an American at the top of DH again and he goes to a foreign team. Good for him though!
  • + 1
Does anyone have a Ballpark figure on what Gwinn is getting paid? I can't believe Specialized couldn't cough up the money that YT did.
  • + 3
It's possible Gwin got less than he wanted or might have some profit sharing deal worked out. Also, specialized probably could have paid Gwin what he wanted, but felt it wasn't the best value for them. No harm in any of it. Each party has to do what's in it's own best interest.
  • + 2
I'd say at least a full Ballpark, maybe a Ballpark and a tennis court too..
  • + 1
I'm assuming the reason he went to YT is because they would let him make any deal he wanted with his sponsors and that all of them combined with what YT pays him gets him more money that what he got from
  • + 3
 FIRE UP baby, lets roll!!!
  • + 3
Kinda disappointed it isn't Brazzers, though.
  • + 2
Always a fan Aaron, very excited to see whats in store for you over the next season. Give'r buddy.
  • + 4
 ... nice T Shirt Aaron
  • + 3
Gwin went to YT so I did too.
  • + 2
Bit of a shame that part of building up a new team and supporting up and coming riders doesn't include any female riders...
  • - 2
Too be honest, not much are worthy of sponsors. Only the top 10 really. A lot of females are sponsored but ride about as good as some 10 year olds. Lina paulac or whatever to name one.
  • + 2
 wow. Just....wow. #cantgetlaid
  • + 2
I know right?! Where is your token female star YT? Better yet, where is your roster of female stars?
  • + 0
It's honestly just the truth, don't get me wrong, girls like Atherton and tahnee and ragot are amazing and deserve it but a lot of other girls who are sponsored ride about the same level as most 15 year olds. It's just the Truth.
  • + 6
The only people who up voted you are 15yr BOYS. So don't think for one second your narrow sexist views are shared amongst the majority. There is some truth to what you are sayin, your delivery is just awful. There are a few talented young guns out there that ride about as well as some of the top women in DH. I'd like to see them out ride T-MO over 7 stages though.
Here is the thing, your sexist ignorance would have sponsors pull support from female riders to what? Support more 15yr boys? Ha.
Women are part of this sport whether you like it or not. We spend money, and some of us no names out here will blow you off the trail. We already had our tiny piece of RedBull coverage cut in half. We are lucky to get two lines of apparel from a major brand, prizes are less at races that the boys, and we have to put up with you and all you other sexist cry babies pecking on keyboards.
Why even try and make this point? What effect does the support of women in mountain biking take away from you riding experience that you would make such a feeble attempt to deface the level of women's riding today?
  • + 0
By no way am I undermining women, sorry if it came out that way! All I'm saying is that at this point in the sport there isn't a very large amount of females participating, in particular in downhill, so the talent pool jsnt as big creating less talented riders than for males. So truth be told, to be a diverse team many teams will just get any girl they can find to ride sponsored for them! Yes there are some insane female shredders like Casey brown, but in all honesty, at least from all the races I've been to, some girls have sponsors and support only because they have a vagina. Plain and simple.
  • + 2
@dannygoesmtb, you are absolutely undermining women with your comments! The attitude displayed here is a primary reason why more women AREN'T part of the gravity side of mountain biking. I have no doubt in my mind that Aaron Gwin would be able to find a rippin' fast young woman to bring onto his new team to mentor and develop into a challenge for Rachel Atherton, Manon Carpenter, etc. I think everybody can agree that female participation in the sport is much lower vs male participation, but avoiding women altogether, like Gwin is doing, will just continue to alienate 50% of the population and keep those participation numbers artificially low.
  • - 1
I'm not saying women can't do what men are doing or etc etc, but if you look at what girls are being sponsored by companies, half of them arent good, but rather just model the company , and have thousands of followers on Instagram because they model the shirts and take a few photos with their bikes and some two foot jumps. I want more girls involved in the sport and for them to be in the same level as guys, we just need to sponsor actual talents, not girls who can model the company and barely can ride!
  • + 3
Anyone know what brand will handle the shifting duties?
  • + 2
Really like YT as a company.
  • + 2
 Supported by.........and Red Bull, no?
  • + 2
Watch bike sales now go crazy!
  • + 2
Finally the saga ends. Just about as bad as "who shot JR".........
  • + 2
None of the 14yr old on this thread have a clue what you are talking about. Our age is showing.
  • + 2
Haha I was wondering how long it would take for someone to mention age.
  • + 1
.........and this is why YT's prices jumped considerably for the 2016 models.
  • + 3
 Meh
  • + 2
 Lacondeguy + Zink + Gwinn
  • + 2
Would it be part of the deal for gwin to have an angel on the team? :-p
  • + 2
Oh my god.. We're all so surprised :O lol
  • + 2
YT bikes to cost a fortune soon!
  • + 2
Honda was the RN01, not NR01 (nerd alert!) @RichardCunningham
  • + 1
Will he have to black out the label on his old road and xc bikes for training?
  • + 2
Guess my new Demo won't be fast now Gwin doesn't ride one...????
  • + 1
Right on! Haven't heard many good things about e.thirteen wheels though. Anyone have them?
  • + 2
And I thought he was going to Ellsworth.
  • + 2
Damn thats gonna push sales for them.
  • + 2
Nobody spot the "transition too short for good result" flash?
  • + 2
Yep, that made me chuckle - Even the editor couldn't be arsed to watch this boring-ass interview all the way through after rendering the final edit.
  • + 2
 I feel like a december 26
  • + 1
The song between dialogue is really bugging me....is it off Dave Mirra freestyle BMX game? Great choice if so.
  • + 6
Gangstarr - Moment of Truth. Off the Album Moment of Truth. R.I.P Guru.
  • + 1
 And now Mirra too.
  • + 4
Evert since FOX "expendable youth" video (yes video) I always associate Moment of truth with Mirra.

Lyrics of the song turned out to be tragically fitting.
  • + 1
Its official.... Gwins a gangster wit a YT pistol....yall better lookout.......its gonna be a shootout!!!!!! BOOM
  • + 2
my favorite part was when A-aron Gwin defeated the evil robot king in 2385
  • + 2
 TRP Brakes and Onza tyres!?
  • + 3
Smart move by Onza, and Gwin would essentially be riding Maxxis
  • + 2
Couldn't be any worse than SRAM..
  • + 1
I'm guessing we'll see sharpied tires and brakes some time this season...
  • + 1
Dude TRP cyclocross disc brakes are sick. Not saying that means their DH brake is good, but they do know how to make quality stuff.
  • + 1
Yep, TRP disc brakes on my crosser and road bike are OK. I have never seen them on a DH bike before, maybe Gwinn will help develop a competitor to the usual suspects and help drive pricing down.
  • + 1
it's pronounced 'too ez'?? really? doesn't exactly roll of the tongue . . .
  • + 1
It's German. Nothing rolls of the tongue Wink
  • + 1
Also, it stands for "do it", as in DOIT=TUES.
  • + 1
hope they wont get sued from nike...just do it
  • + 1
I have to say, one of the must interesting athletes interviews I ever see.
  • + 1
Should've been on suntour or rst though..
  • + 1
Gonna be some year of racing, yeh@
  • - 2
Many people went after the money only to realise that they made the wrong decision. I would be really surprised to see Gwin win any races this year but I would be glad to be wrong.
  • + 16
lol so many of those comments after trek too. "He will never win on Spesh" ..... whoops. Sorry man but only an idiot would be surprised to see Gwin win, its all the man does!
  • + 2
That _______ has way too short chainstays, Gwin isn't going to win.
  • - 1
It is not just Gwin who is obviously really fast and capable. It is the whole team that supports him so it would be a miracle to win against the other well established teams. Anyway this is the year of changes so I am really looking forward for the 2016 to begin.
  • + 3
You didn't watch the interview but comment anyways haha. He kept the people from his previous "team" that he got on good with. He praised YT management for listening to his feedback and being willing to implement the changes, which is where Specialized failed him, by taking ages to make minor geo changes and not really working with him to get the bike dialled.
  • + 1
I am pretty sure that he would say positive things about his new sponsor. Anyway please don't be strangers once the new season starts.
  • + 5
@StanMarsh It sounds a bit weird to hear him say that given that during his first year on Specialized they made him an all new rear end that was longer, then they made an all new aluminum Demo, then they made the all new carbon Demo, then they made a custom rocker link for his new Demo. In terms of tooling costs & mold costs, they certain did more than a few things for him. Whether or not that was up to his standard is a different question (and it seems it wasn't) but in my experience with athletes (in a different sport) they expect "minor" changes to be made to a mold when that requires a new mold in order to implement. Not as easy we might think. Minor geo changes are quite often major/expensive modifications to make.
  • + 3
I took Gwin's comments to mean that their was a lot of levels or bureaucracy to go through at Specialized. Maybe even some pushback. Apparently he thinks it will be easier to make changes with YT.
  • + 1
 Well said Wink
  • + 1
 Silly feckers Smile
  • + 2
Seems more like Gwin went for control than money. I doubt that Spesh was going to pay him too much less than YT is able to. Sounds like he chose YT and structured all of his own and some of their sponsorships to make sure he could A) ride what he wants, and B) have legitimate input on product development, which he repeatedly said he was passionate about. He kept his own wrench, hooked up with an old manager, and feels comfortable with the YT guys and bike. Winning isnt guaranteed for any rider, and he's had down seasons on teams that he also won with. Your summation of the situation is wrong and your prediction is useless.
  • + 1
It's silly think he is not money driven at the same time, short lifespan in dh for a lot of riders so it makes sense to have an urge to get the best pay possible.Points A and B you made are true but he is definitely a business man at the end of the day so wages do come into the picture.Roll on Wc season then all questions will be answered Smile
  • + 2
For sure, the man deserves to be paid, and I think he probably got his. But it's not like S couldn't have matched whatever YT is giving him, even with Graves on board. The perks of running what he wants and having input makes it a better situation for him. YT, e13, Onza, TRP.... Gwin represents a coup for these comapnies and you'd be damn sure he's going to have some clout there.
  • + 2
Ain't it great to be in that position Smile
  • + 2
 It was always yt...
  • + 2
 great video interview
  • + 0
I love watching him ride. But a few of those brands make me think Cannondale Fulcrum days.
  • + 1
So I guess this will be a season of chainless runs...
  • + 1
 Breakless*
  • + 1
So well spoken. Best of luck!
  • + 1
But who the f*ck is his top-cap sponsor?
  • + 1
Next up, Gwin moves back into the Deuce, lolllllll
  • + 1
But does YT have access to a Win Tunnel?
  • + 2
They don't need to, they have a tail wind.
  • + 2
 Don't you mean Gwin Tunnel?
  • + 1
you can see the sun in the background moving
  • + 2
 Meh
  • + 2
 Eh.
  • + 1
 Pinkbike is about to explode
  • + 2
 exclusive gwinterview
  • + 1
TRP on the hot seat, no pressure, no pressure
  • + 1
Nah it's ok. Gwinn needs brakes like he needs a chain.
  • + 2
 @richeytea called it
  • + 2
 Haha! Wink
  • + 1
Moment of Truth - awesome choice of music right there Pinkbike!
  • + 0
I don't have time to read all these comments to check if someone else has already come up with this: Gwinterview.
  • + 1
 holy crap, 450mm reach and he's 5'10"
  • + 1
afterall.....gwin still on KTM MOTORCYCLE :v Lol
  • + 2
 e*thirteen wheels?
  • + 1
Good luck this year Gwin! Merica!
  • + 1
 Ahhhhhhhhh
  • + 1
 FUCK
  • + 0
wonder how much he is being overpaid
  • - 1
I think it's a hoax! It's not YT! The real company he's riding for will come out soon!
  • - 2
"He comes from a really good family".... he says it like its a requirement to be a team member.... if he keeps talking like that he will be shunned....
  • + 1
 YT making big moves
  • + 1
 Exclusive Gwin-terview
  • + 1
 Who said so. Muhaha.
