Jared Graves Diagnosed with a Brain Tumor

Sep 4, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff
bigquotesSome news of the not so awesome variety. To cut a long story short, since getting back home from Whistler I suffered a couple of seizures, and woke up from one last Thursday morning to paramedics taking me off to hospital, where tests and scans were done to discover I have a tumor growing in my brain. So for now more scans and doctors appointments and scans over the next week leading to surgery within the next approximately 10 days. The plan at the moment is to then start chemotherapy. Not sure what else to say for now, it’s all hit so fast....needless to say I won’t be at the last 2 EWS rounds this year as this new battle begins.Jared Graves

Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Jared and his family and we all hope he has a speedy recovery.

I'm reading this sitting in hospital in Newcasle with my 2 year old son who is fighting neuroblastoma cancer, he's slowly recovering from high dose chemo after a very tough few weeks - the bravery of the kids on this ward is mind blowing. You can do it Jared, stay strong and I'm sure you will be back on the bike at full speed again. All the best from me and Frank.

Damn that sucks, I'm not a doctor but pretty close.... Would recomend getting a second opinion, maybe at the Cleveland Clinic or Moffitt. Unless it's inoperable I would stay far away from any type of chemo. Either way heal up and wish you the best.

I read another comment similar to what I’m about to say.

Seeing the news about Jared is a super downer but you’re a strong person and you will beat this Jared! Prayers and healing vibes going out for you from my family!

@crag79 prayers out to you and your 2 year old in the form of strength for you and momma and healing for your 2 year old. I’m a father of 3 ranging from 3-9 in age. I’ve been thouroughly blessed with not having to go through anything like what you’re going through. Your young rippers gonna pull through this man!

I feel for you. And Jared. Stay strong.

Craig-as a parent of twin boys (both of whom go to the Sea Otter with me every year), I can only imagine what you and your family are going through. Prayers for you, your family and most of all your son.
  • 3 1
Can't even imagine what you and your son must be going through. It grieves me to read stuff like this because life is so precious. I sincerely wish all the best to you, Frank, and the rest of your family. Tell him that he's done what no one else can... He's gotten the whole PB community united behind him. It's something we're all in agreement on! Peace, to you and yours.
  • 3 1
Hope the treatment goes well! It's so hard to even think about what you're going through. Stay strong!

Never post on PB, but just wanted to say, as a father of a one year old and a three year old, you really got me with this one. Praying for Frank and for your fam. You can beat this!

I saw this comment last night, way down towards the bottom of the thread, and was genuinely hoping it would be at the top. It was good to see it where it is this morning.

God bless your boy. I can’t imagine. I’ve got three myself (8 months, 3 and 4 years.) Thanks for sharing.

Best wishes go out to you and your son, cancer is a bitch of a thing and no one deserves to go through what you are going through, those kids are among the bravest and strongest out there, and should be an inspiration to us all to never give up fighting.

when i read this stuff im blown away with the reality of how delicate life is and how important what we have is with kids and our families. Im having a battle to even see my kids i wish everyone understood how important life is and how we need to live every moment, my thoughts and emotional pain is with you all, im sorry and understand the battles we have to do, being in it is terrible, no words to describe, we hope and pray we all pass through to a better future the other side . God bless the little children and all those suffering like this, we will make it through.

Four years ago I had one of my closest friends diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Today he's the single fittest, most driven, most annoyingly productive human being I know. In an increasing percentage of the population, treatment works. As corny as it sounds to type, positive thinking works wonders as well, and there's a reason why every indigenous nation on Earth believes in some kind of higher power. Shits very real, IMO. All the best to you and your's.
  • 237 1
Go home cancer... you're drunk. Honestly, who chooses to go toe-to-toe with this man!? He'd wreck anyone! Best of luck with the treatment Jared, we look forward to seeing you back out giving the mountains hell soon.

Oh man... I had that same exact bewildered look in your picture Jared a year ago. Super healthy, was running one day, the next I spent 60 days in hospital with tumor the size of a water bottle in my back. 500+ hours of chemo and a bone marrow + stem cell transplant and I came out the other side thankfully.

I don't talk much about it, but thought I would say a couple things that really hit home here... It is a scary scary deal when you are this age and get cancer like that. So confusing when someone says YOU have it. It really put things into perspective for me, personally, work, family, kids... Best thing you have going for you probably right now is your mental strength and your physical strength to beat this stupid thing and come out stronger on the other end... I couldn't thank those doctors and nurses enough who worked on me, try to trust them.

Keep up the good fight man!

One of the most immensely talented cyclists of his generation and one of the nicest pros I've had a chance to speak with on a gondola ride up the mountain. Pulling for you Jared as you have pulled for your mate #91 all these years.

Don't know what to say. It's so depressing when you see a daily fighter, cuz' every sportsman/woman are fighter on their own filed, and then disaster struck like this...
Really don't know what to say... just wish all the best for Jared, and hope he'll get back on the bike, maybe the will and the love of the bike and family keeps him strong.
We're with you man!

As a cancer survivor myself I’m sending you, and anyone dealing with cancer, all the strength and positive vibes I can muster.

Stay as positive as you can and attack this like you’ve attacked your mtb career and you’ll be good to go. Just think of the great story you’ll have when you beat this and all the new people you’ll reach and inspire as a result.

Hang in there and stay strong bro!

And we were wondering why he couldnt ride that well! It reminds me of Richard Burns in WRC in 2003 when he couldnt drive as fast as the rest. Heal up soon Champ. Best of wishes.

Unbelievable sad! Life is so fragile, a champion of champions is hit with something like this out of nowhere! I'm crossing fingers for Jared, he's an inspiration to myself and probably many mountain bikers, and I hope he succeeds in beating this and getting back to his normal life again.
  • 14 0
Stay positive and take each day at a time and you'll get through it and be back riding strong again. I had Hodgkin's lymphoma last year and while of course our experiences will be different, the attitude you approach it with is what will make all the difference. You'll beat this Jared!

Pump the brakes everyone. A tumor isn't necessarily malignant cancer.
I have two family members that had very large tumors in their brains which certainly caused some issues and required scary medical intervention but they were not "cancer".
Lets keep a positive mindset here and hope for great outcome once they test.

Hoping all the best for you Jared. You're literally a champion and no doubt have the mental strength to get through this.
  • 3 0
If chemotherapy is an option it's very unlikely that Jared has a benign tumor.
  • 9 0
I’m about a year and a half out from my fight with Intratesticular Rhabdomyosarcoma. 2 surgery’s and 24 weeks of chemo later and I’m still kicking round. You got this buddy! It may suck, but you’re strong and will back at it in no time! Much love~

Healing vibes sent out to you Jared , I was diagnosed with Esophagus cancer on December 5th last year , totally devastating news to try to come to terms with when you get told that you have Cancer, I thought that that was it , game over , but , with the help of the local hospital and Velindre cancer hospital in Cardiff they started me on 5weeks of chemotherapy every Monday and radiotherapy every day for 5 weeks , don’t get me wrong going through that treatment was absolutely fkn brutal and there were days I thought it would be easier on myself and my family to just end it ! But I finished my treatment on March 1st this year and thank god im still here , initially the surgeon and my oncologist said they were confident that they could remove the tumour/esophogus and part of my stomach and that would be it but unfortunately after my 6week scan the tumor had spread to a group of lymph nodes surrounding my kidneys and possibly into my liver, however another scan 6 weeks later and there has been no spread past the lymph nodes , to say I was over joyed is an understatement as the operation was then deemed ineffective as the cancer had spread, what I’m trying to say basically is what my oncologist told me , your young , fit , healthy and that plays massively on pulling through and also a positive mental attitude is the key to kicking cancers arse, I’m not going to give in to it I’ve got way too much to live for , same as you Jared you just got to fight this fkkr with everything you got stay fit , don’t give in (not that you will) and a good medical team on your side and you will come out of this and be back smashing the trails in no time , it’s not going to be easy ,but , it can be done, Fk Cancer????

Healing vibes, my identical twin brother had a Tumor removed the size of a baseball from his brain over 15 years ago, he was in a very bad way before they discovered the tumor, you are luck that this was discovered early. He made a full recovery. We have amazing doctors and nurses to care for the sick. Take care, life is a fragile thing to be cherished.

My wife went through the same thing (astrocytoma growing in her motor cortex) 6 years ago (when only 32). It's scary shit & once they know it's there it all happens REALLY fast. Best of luck Jared! If you fight this with even half the intensity you showed to get to the Olympics then you'll be in a good place after the surgery I'm sure...

Hey man, you conquered so much, you can do this too (even though I realize there is no fun in this one).

Look, you've represented so many companies in such a great way, been a role model for so many of us. If you need anything, ask. Allow us to do something back. I'm proud to think we as a cycling community helped Andrew Cho from GT when he needed it and I saw some true legends pitch in. If we can invest in the latest parts and components, we can definitely invest in our inspiration.

Stay strong man, you're a fighter!

Stay positive, they are a lot more common than people realise. A good friend of mine has recovered well after finding out the same way coming round in hospital after a fit, he had surgery and that went so well they decided chemo wasn’t necessary afterward.
  • 5 0
Shit news Jared, currently going through the chemo thing with my wife, hard to believe that such nasty chemicals can be good for you but it’s the best way to say F U Cancer, hang in there and I’m sure you’ll come through this.

  • 5 1
Ask them about Gamma knife as an alternative to the chemo. What they absolutely will not tell you about the chemotherapy is that it will eventually cause deterioration of the atlas and axis vertebrae at the base of the skull, it will cause damage to the nerve bundle there and that means, well, not great things.
  • 5 1
My thoughts and prayers are with you man, I grew up following you from the NORBA days and you have always been an inspiration. I lost my dad to brain cancer when I was 18 but cancer affects everyone differently and if anyone on this planet can overcome this shit, its you brother. Crush this like you have crushed racing the past 20 years! We want you back on the podium!
  • 4 0
So sad.. just shows you we could all get something like this. It's really just bad luck. It's so important to get checked regularly by your Doctor and NEVER be embarrassed about asking questions or getting something checked that you feel is not right. This is why we need to spend more money on research. It never seems that important until you or a family member gets sick. Lots of dedicated people out there are working hard to make these kind of things a thing of the past. But most research and University are grossly underfunded. Fight hard, trust your medical team and you can beat this, all the best.

Using this as a good time to talk about symptoms of brain tumors: what are the symptoms? Jared had seizures, which obviously a pretty clear identifier, but could he have suffered from headaches? Blurred vision? Slower responses?

I suffer with headaches pretty badly, especially when under heat stress. I can ride hard in the winter with no headaches, but in the summer get them even on leisurely rides.

I've always worried that headaches could be a signal of impending issues later on, if people with brain tumors might never feel "off" until they start getting seizures.

@PHeller: Depends where the tumour is but my friends was above ear behind temple. I remember sitting at a campfire at LeMans 24hrs drinking beers with him and he was complaining about how he felt like he’d had terrible wisdom tooth ache for the last few months and should get it checked, his jaw looked a bit swollen. He also looked run down but he’s hell of a hard worker so put it down to doing too many hours. He asked me if it could be anything else (I’m a medical scientist and do Stem cell transplants for a living) and I replied “nothing there but brain so hope not” & told him to go to the dentist and get an x Ray, he hadn’t got round to that before he had a fit in the night and just like Jared, woke up in hospital having scans to assess the tumour. It’s over two years later and he’s basically back to normal now. So from that if you are ever worried get checked out properly, no one ever wants to think the worse so you and friends and family can easily dismiss things and assume explainations for symptoms are from other things with zero worries I.e. wisdom tooth ache.

I may be missing something but having a tumor does not make it cancer. He may be lucky and it could just be a benign tumor. As far as I know he never said cancer. In either case still scary stuff. All the best.
  • 4 0
He said he's going through chemo. That most likely means it's malignant (cancerous). Benign tumors don't usually respond to chemo.
