4 Events, 1 Bike - Jared Rando

Mar 18, 2011
by Peter Karas
At the recent Australian National Championships Jared Rando was looking for a challenge, so he decided to race 4 different events without changing a single part on the bike. Read on... Jared tell us what your plan for the National Championships was?

Coming into the event I was a bit bored with DH racing, so I thought I might try and do something different, I was thinking of what I could do, I did the Downieville race (this race has essentially become the all mountain World Championships) for the first time last year and had an awesome time. So I thought why don't I try that at the Nationals? The same concept except for all events. The idea was to do 4X, XC and DH, I ended up doing pump track as well, all on the same bike, with the same set up for the whole weekend.

What bike have you chosen for this event?

Basically I didn't think too much about it, I had a Trance X and a Reign X on the wall, so it was going to be one of those two! I ended up going for the Reign X because I thought it would be more fun on the downhill. Plus, the Reign is not that much heavier than the Trance, it is basically the same bike I raced Sea Otter on last year.

Suspension technology is making it easier to have a 'do it all bike'.

Obviously, being the National Championships the XC field was of an extremely high standard, what was the 'plan of attack' coming into the race?

I just wanted to do it and didn't expect to do well by any means, I just didn't want to finish last on the first lap, which I managed to do, just! I think next year I might do some more dedicated training and see if I can at least hang for a little bit.

Jared officially finished 24th, which was last, but even racing and finishing in the Elite Men's category, at the National Championships, on the technical XC course at Eagle, is an achievement by itself. Jared, no stranger to both 4X and pump track racing fared better in these disciplines. Jared finished 6th in the 4X and top 8 in the pump track. Jared tell us about your 4X and pump track races?

Yeah I was happy, I was actually pretty surprised with the pump track, the bike got around really well. Obviously a hardtail is best for pump track, but I ended up not even touching the suspension or tyre pressure for it because it was in between the 4X qualifying. So I rolled up and lapped around, the 4X was pretty good to, the course was a bit skatier than most so I managed to make a few moves!

Jared flatted on the first corner of the track during his seeding run for the DH was so looking for a better result in his final, unfortunately after a week of hard use, on a rocky track with a tyre orientated more towards XC and trail riding not all went to plan. Jared made it down the top part of the track before flatting in the rock garden, even running 38psi in the rear and 35psi in the front could didn't stop him flatting. In the end he finished 48th out of 67 finishers. Jared explains his final run:

I ended up flatting near the bottom in the rock garden, I had a good run up until then, I was having fun, but coming out of the rock garden it started feeling a little squishy on the back and by the time I got into the open it was dead flat. I did what I could, but I was still pretty happy with the time considering (Jared posted a 2.18.76 which was 16.4 seconds behind the winner).

The DH didn't go to plan, three flats over the whole week, but unfortunately one of those was during his final run.

"The people's champion" is how I heard you being described, happy to live with that tag?

Ha ha, I don't know about that, it's a bit much! I am just trying to show people you can get out and race on whatever bike you have, you don't need to have the ideal bike for the situation. So many people ride a bike like the Reign X or Trance X and in the end you can race on them, these days people get put off from doing an event by not having the 'right' bike. You just have to go out and do it, I would like to thank long time sponsor Giant Bicycles for letting me do that!

Words to live by, the last part

 Vid? That's awesome

Yeah furshure. This season I'm racing XC on my SC Bullit. its good fun, even if all the carbon skulled, spandex brained weight weenies look like I'm some sort of alien for having a bike that is over 35 lbs. Good Times!

I rode some XC on a BMX in high school, we had a high school XC chapionship and there is still a BMX division now because of me and a couple other guys that rode those first couple of years

oh and now mountain bike action had an article in there last issue stating that long-travel bikes should be Illegal, yes, ILLEGAL, on trails that aren't specifically built for them. In otherwords, Mountainbike action wants make it possible for a park ranger to give u a ticket for riding uphill on a downhill bike! why do they feel the need to make it impossible for badasses like Jared Rando to do awesome stuff like this?!?! Honestly, If anyone can tell me why its bad to work ur legs a little harder than necessary, please reply.

MBA has to be the worse MTB mag ever. got a years subscription as a gift - how much 29'er, lycra and american bike only gospel can you fit in a mag??
  • 3 0
That just made me dislike MBA even more
  • 2 0
@captaingillooley, if the mag that i read it in was mine, it would have been in pieces and the trash before I finished reading the article. But the copy belonged to a library, so I had to actively restrain my self. I shouldn't have. Shit like that doesn't deserve to be on a library's self.
  • 1 0
Ah too bad you restrained yourself! Now the library is going to contaminate the minds of the rest of the population... Haha, seriously, though, that's impressive you didn't tear it up. Props to you!

thanks bro. my moral compas was spinning wildly!!

rad!! fair play and a lesson for most that say they need a dh rig or whatever to compete - you dont - you may need dh tyres though hahahahaaaaa. seriously though - 16 secs off with a flat, not sure how far the fl;at was from the finish but still, not a bad effort on what is basically a heavy duty XC/AM rig.

I LOVE my Reign X. I as well Race DH on and even some XC. I do how ever change out the fork and shock for DH and XC. It really is a "DO ALL BIKE"

This is a huge move in the right direction! Guy's like me can't afford to have more than one bike to take to the trails and the mountain. I've been taking my trail bike more towards freeride for the last 6months part by part, trying to get a feel for what I like. I think I might get into Super D once I find the balance. Awesome article!

Not to sound like a geezer (or to diminish the accomplishment - right on Jared!), but when I started riding, back in the eighties, a lot of events were like that - you competed in xc, then dh the next day, then some crit type thing or an uphill race, and got scored cumulatively. There were stage winners and overall winners, and it was pretty cool. We thought that was impossible in this day of specialization, but I guess we got proved wrong.

solid riding and a sick bike. awesome results man

this is how mountainbiking should be! This is a marketing mans nightmare, you can ride everything on one bike i for one champion this by riding Red Route XC Loops on a 40lb Stinky Deluxe! Keep it up!

i rode the beast @ coed y brenin, the marin @ betws y coed and every one of the 7 STANES on a 224 with super tacky's while my mates pottered round on Orange 5's and the like, f*ckin hard work but doable none the less....these AM rigs now are just amazing though aren't they, my shitty little XC rig meta 5 loves DH duties - shame its like spaghetti on the fast corners :-)
  • 1 0
yup: on a 5" trailbike you can get effectively to any place in any terrain and have great fun riding down. You can even race XC with it. Then on 6" AM/FR bike you can really DO IT ALL and do it very well in every terrain.

Weight isn't the problem when most people don't even know how to pedal right (eventualy heard the rubbish from a roadie firend about circles) and how to listen to their bodies when they say that the wall is coming. A the same time XCing with 2plies is an overkill Wink 1ply UST iz the sh*t!

im on single ply with Stans NoTube kit Smile

We have similar events over here where the idea is to use 1 bike. You can only change the pedals between races. The Hamsterly 1-2-1 was the first event of this type that I entered and it was great fun. XC course on the Saturday followed bu a DH course on the Sunday. I done it on my Specialized Enduro. SPDs and a bit more air in the shocks and tyres for the xc then softened everything up and ran flats for the DH.

I do like the concept of one bike for everything events. Most people can only afford one bike and most of the time that will be a bike designed for the trails we ride most days. But those bikes are not competitive in specialist races like DH and XC. I think that's why Downiville Classic is just so popular - the perfect bike for it is the bike most poeple have in their garage.
  • 1 0
Keysville classic has an "All Mountain" category where you compete in all of the events on the same bike. Check it out:

I'm a proud and extremely satisfied owner of an 09 Reign X1. I can take it fast DH or on a casual XC ride and feel completely comfortable and confident on it. Best MF'n bike I've ever owned.
  • 2 1
Fair play for trying, but not really any convincing results in any 1 discipline really.
Jack of all trades, master of none?
I'm afraid all thats been achieved is demonstrating that bike wasn't much cop in any of the events
  • 1 0
I think that is a fair enough comment. He'd spent the previous eleven years riding for a living and at the end of it basically went fishing for six months. His fitness wasn't anywhere close to his usual high standard. He just wanted to go and race for fun.

THAT is true all-mountain! run what ya brung

1 man show!!! humm 1 bike show,, thats like it ....

 AWESOME.
that's exactly why i really love that bike it just seems to be able to do anything.
props to the rider though Wink

Great article! Totaly pumped up to have some good PRO evidence of the theory:

ONE BIKE! for years!
  • 1 2
iunno what the big deal is with this, they build bikes for this purpose. Look at the new norco range, that thing can do anything. So iunno, seems like a stupid article for the simple theory of using a bike for biking....

 Rando... A true Champion!

At least his lower link didn't break!

 Reign X FTW!

Who would have thought, flats and nobby nics haha.
  • 1 0
If your run Snakeskin or even better double defence as UST with sane pressures, then they are great - at least for me. Trouble starts when U run just the pure evo version with tubes... then they are even worse than Conti SSonics. He uses normal tubes here as he has EX721 rims.
  • 1 0
lol.....so inthe end it was a bad idea
