Video: Beyond the Bike with Jill Kintner

Exteriors are sometimes quite deceiving. What we see of someone in those fleeting moments of passing by, or perhaps on the Internet, is seldom their true self. Yet, as fans, we rarely get to glimpse beyond what we see in photos, web videos, and in lift lines at bike parks. When I first met Jill Kintner it was a series of these quick interactions that left me somewhat puzzled about her. She was always pleasant and friendly, but she came off as so intense that it was somewhat intimidating. I’d never quite met anyone like Jill – focused to the point of being almost standoffish. But like most people, what you see is rarely what you get.

MENTIONS: @jk33 / @redbullbike / @norcobicycles / @SombrioCartel

Jill Kintner made her presence known even if just for one round. 5th place and a spot on the podium for the American rider.

This might be a good place to share a tiny story I have about Jill. Years ago I bought a full suspension bike from her (used). We met up in a parking lot, she pulled up in her Tacoma. I checked out the frame, and asked about the pivots and bushings, and if she had any spares for things like the rear derailleur hanger. She's like "oh yeah I have those", goes to her back seat, and pulls out one of those plastic bins with dozens of little compartments for small parts, bolts, fittings, etc. The thing is f***king immaculate, I mean ORGANIZED. Like a bank teller's drawer. She finds the gadgets I need, I hand her cash money, and we're done. I had some good times on that bike. Thanks Jill and congrats on the recent WC.

Yeah she's a down to earth person. Once I cramped, she helped to stretch my legs.

Why isn't she on a factory team? Cmon bike companies - sponsor more female racers!

She IS sponsored by Norco and has been for years. She was actually both racing WC for them last season AND managing their team. This season she and Bryn decided to cut back on their WC racing and spend more time in North America (still racing, but also doing more development, promotion, etc.).

Seems like a really strong rider with a lotta bike control. I liked the way she explained mountain biking, how there are so many variables when riding like conditions and trail variety. Pump tracks are fun for a while, but there is nothing that compares to riding trails. What I like about riding is that every trail is differant from the last one, the hunt for new zones will never get old.

It has been so good to see pinkbike dedicating so much more space to female riders this last could of years.

To Jill - as a father now thanks for reminding me how responsible I am for supporting and fostering my kid's dreams. I will, however, be adopting that approach you mentioned of saying straight 'A's means no hassles... That sounds like a solid deal Smile
