We are heartbroken to report that Canadian mountain bike legend Jordie Lunn has passed away at 36.

The racer-turned-freerider passed away after a crash while trail riding in Mexico on October 9th, 2019. He was riding in Cabo San Lucas with his friends Darren Berrecloth, Brayden Barrett-Hay, and Greg Watts. Jordie's friendliness, gentle nature, and exuberance for life will be remembered by the entire mountain bike community.

Originally from Parksville, B.C, Jordie got into mountain biking through XC, but his career began in earnest as a DH racer. He was the fastest Canadian at Mont-Sainte-Anne in 2003, as well as the highest ranked North American DH racer in the World Cup standings that year. Shifting his focus to freeriding in films like Ride to the Hills, The Collective, ROAM, and more, he was the first mountain biker to land a corked 720 in 2007. He competed at Crankworx, Red Bull Rampage, and on nearly every stage in freeride mountain biking.

Living in Victoria, BC and splitting his time between riding, coaching, and trail work, Jordie told us back in 2016 that he rode for himself and "all the kids that scream 'do a backflip!'."

Since his big budget film days, Jordie had a resurgence in recent years, self-producing wildly popular video parts like Rough AF and making appearances at the freeride events like Rampage and the Fest Series. He's been a friend, coach, and mentor to many up-and-coming riders, and inspired countless more.

Jordie's appearance was intimidating; a big man, covered in tattoos, gold teeth, and always wearing the most ridiculous kit on the mountain. But that was in stark contrast to his gentle nature and pure friendliness. It didn't matter if you were a fellow pro, a guy in a suit, or a young fan, he had time for you.

His enthusiasm was always infectious, and his outlook always positive. There are few people in this world so universally loved and respected by their peers and fans. The kids he coached absolutely loved him.

Jordie Lunn is survived by his parents Bonnie and Brian Lunn, his brothers Craig and Jarrett Lunn, and his girlfriend Caitlin Larsen.

Our thoughts are with Jordie's friends, family, and loved ones. We count ourselves lucky to have known him. We'll remember Jordie as a relentlessly positive presence in mountain biking.

We will miss him.

JORDIE THOMAS LUNN

On Wednesday, October 9, 2019, Jordie was trail riding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with friends.

We are shattered to inform you, a simple but tragic accident occurred and Jordie sustained a fatal head injury.

Jordie lost his life doing exactly what he loved.

Jordie had an incredible 20+ year career as a mountain biker. He will always be cherished for his heart and love that he gave to his family, friends, and fans, as well as the incredible talent that he had on his bikes.

We will inform you at a later date regarding a celebration of his life.

With love: Brian, Bonnie, Craig, Jarrett Lunn, and our large, loving families.

bigquotesJordie to me was a part of my family as I was a part of his. He was a brother to me as we grew up in a small town with nothing other than our parents' love and our determination to ride bikes, have fun, and get rad. Whether it was lighting each other’s hair on fire or chasing each other around with a potato cannon, we islanders always have done things our own way. Jordie was one of a f*cking kind. The sibling of two brothers that, if you had the pleasure of knowing the trio of bandits at the household, you were always on your toes around as you never knew what kind of shenanigans were about to go down.

I’ve loved Jordie as a brother from the moment we became riding buddies, as biking will build that bond in friends. He was always an inspiration to me to be honest, his ability to see the positive in everything when I was down was uplifting. He had the heart of a lion and the hug of a grizzly bear.

This loss to his family, his fans, and everyone that had the beautiful opportunity to meet this amazing individual we call our brother, will be felt for years to come as “legends never die” and Jordie f*cking Lunn in my heart will never ever be forgotten!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

bigquotesGUTTED. We lost a human that you hope everyone could be like. If he doesn’t make it to heaven then heaven doesn’t f*cking exist. I had the pleasure of spending his last few hours alive with him along with @dberrecloth @braydenbarretthay and @lone_wolf_productions and he was truly enjoying what he loved. Perfect day of riding in a perfect location. Just didn’t seem real and I still can’t grasp it. My condolences go out to his family because I know he loved his brothers and I know he was their glue.

bigquotesThis still doesn’t feel real at all. Our Mexico trip went sideways and we lost such a legend and one of the sickest kindest dudes in MTB, someone I’ve idolized since the day I started riding!!! "ROAM" his back yard jumps was something that drove me down the path i’m on now! My condolences to his family, friends and the entire mtb community! RIP Jord!Brayden Barrett-Hay

RIP Jordie. The gnarliest and nicest combo of a dude you could possibly imagine. My favourite thing about him was how awesome he was with kids. Love you Jordie Lunn! RIP buddy.

Hopefully his memory will live on with the youth he inspired similar to how Stevie's legacy has been carried on

Truly a massive loss for our community. I had the pleasure of knowing Jordie for the past 20 years. As a young racer on the BC Cup circuit he was already wowing crowds and making fans. Jordie would be the guy who could show up to a race or two a year and blow everyone away, and then get 11th at a World Cup! The shenanigans were non-stop of course.
In later years I worked with Jordie on Jumpship and I got to know another side of him as we developed our vision for what that event could be. Jordie insisted that it be challenging, the jumps had to be hard, not just good for tricking - he would accept nothing less. And when arguably better riders sat around discussing the jumps; could it be done? Did it need more dirt here, or less lip there - Jordie just sent them and shut everyone up. That vision, and his determination are front and centre in his Rough AF edits.
Despite his many accomplishments his most inspiring acts will always be his kindness to others and his relentless pursuit of good times - which he approached with the same vision he took to riding.
RIP Jord, you will be missed.

Damn. Just damn. Guy had style for miles and never did anything by halves. Another legend gone far too soon. Think I'm going to attempt some sort of huck-to-flat jump in his honour today. RIP.

Must be the tenth time I've looked back at this. It simply can't be real?! He even looked indestructible.

Such a shame and I can't actually believe it. Shred hard AF up there dude XXX

@streetkvnt-kvlt: I sent a sketch 30 ft log to log double yesterday for Jordie, 3rd attempt got it dialed. Ive eyed it up several times for the last 15 years but never had the guts to try it... Til this. RIP Lunn, keep sending it up in heaven brother.

what a shit year !!!!! Ride In Peace Jordie. Still have right now in mind the edit I watched earlier this week shredding Cam"s backyard....

Jordie’s management of that zone was one of my favorite things about that event. That and the comments about the HOA asking “the kids” to stop building jumps in the common area.

RIP

No f*cking way...this sucks. Dude still fresh in my mind from that edit too. Was hoping he'd become a Rampage judge for life! Such a badass, he must've been taken out by a nuke or something. 'Roam' forever in that heavenly dirt up there bro. #longlivejordie

I never got to try his porridge... talk about a guy that made you happy every time he was on a bike. Thanks for the example, we should ride a little less seriously because of your example. #longlivejordie

Vancouver Island has lost another hero, and member of our biking community.

The forest will forever honour your memory Jordie.

I want to thank you for being an ambassador to the sport. For being a roll model to our groms, hosting bike camps etc on Bear MTN. For being the first to send it!!!

Thank you for your contribution s in helping open and promote Bear MTN bike park and trails.

I will forever remember rolling up to the bike park for the first time only to be greeted by you. You took two hours to talk, walk the lines, etc I felt nervous as hell riding there solo with you, the big dawg, but you cheered me on and provided tips to some features. I was so stoked!

I rode Bear MTN last night (w lights) for the first time and I finished with an overwhelming sense of gratitude to have trails of this calibre in my backyard. Next lap there, I'm dedicating to you.

Jordie's a stand up guy, amazing rider, trail blazer, and a kind soul. RIP Jordie, say hi to Stevie.

This is absolutely the worst news ever to wake up to! It's a dark day here on Vancouver island today. Jordie has been a favorite rider and influence on me and many others here on Vancouver island! The scene we have wouldn't exist if it wasn't for dudes like Jordie! The scene on the island is like family no matter where you put your rubber to earth. We breed them special here and it shows. I know Chainsaw was waiting with big open arms for him when he crossed over. My heart sends nothing but love and peace to his family, friends and fans. Totally f*cking gutted! Today I ride and raise a Lucky for Jordie!

This one hurts. I’m always skeptical when folks post the old “he was the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet” trope, like “Yeah? I remember when ——- was a complete dick to me when I tried to talk to him in Whistler...” Not the case with this dude. He’d literally drop whatever he was doing and give you his undivided attention. Truly one of the nicest people out there. RIP to one of the very best.

Wooah, can't quite come to grips with this, Jordie just seemed invincible and it'll be a real shame to not see him throwing it down at Rampage or putting out insane edits anymore. Can only imagine the grief of those who knew him closely. Really so sorry for your loss peeps Eek

Its probably highly inappropriate to ask. But what happened? That man took freeride to a new level. They say it was a simple accident. Helmet failure? Bike failure? JW. RIP man, shred hard up there.
  • 33 0
I searched and found this quote elsewhere: Darren Berrecloth was with Jordie when the accident happened ... and tells TMZ Sports "We were riding a mellow trail in Mexico and he came up short on a gap jump and hit his head."

So tragic Frown How many thousands of jumps and crazy tricks and pinned-at-the-limit races has he done before, to lose it now just riding with friends Frown
  • 19 1
Head injuries are weird. Sometimes it doesn’t take much. Just the right hit in the right spot and something that looks pretty innocent can be deadly.
  • 22 17
not to be insensitive, lunn had beaten the shit out of his brain over the years...i can think of several gnarly concussion inducing crashes alone and i didnt even follow him that closely. One time too many. What a bummer. RIP. I remember him from collevtive edits when i first started. A damn shame.
  • 10 0
@sino428: non of the pros were wearing full faced helmets. This was a “local” trail in Mexico. Also Mellow for pro free riders can mean a pro line for us mere mortals.
  • 13 4
I generally as a rule will ride blue trails in my half lid but black trails (here in canada, so double black for sanctioned trails in the US) are mandatory full face. Was doing a pinned run down a local blue trail yesterday thinking that the rocks on either side look pretty hard. Would be good to see safety gear and full face lids become more of the norm. I use a bell super DH for pedal up ride down and while it's not the same as a DH lid it's probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. Highly recommend.
  • 10 1
@friendlyfoe: I think MTB, and medicine in general is still catching up with head injuries right now. I agree, we need to be better about encouraging full face use, and modeling it for our young riders coming up.

I also have to say, it really frustrated me when I was coaching high schoolers how often I would have kids who were riding in a fairly basic, 5 year old helmet they'd crashed on because they couldn't afford a new one with MIPs or a full face; I know the manufacturer has to make a buck but helmets are outrageously expensive for a piece of mandatory safety gear. I know often times avalanche beacons are super cheap to rent because we don't want people to die; I feel that a similar practice should exist for helmet pricing.
  • 11 0
@friendlyfoe: To be fair you can have a worse off on a blue trail if it is fast & flowing. I have had some of my worse crashes pinning it on a blue trail not being 100% engaged, something sneaks up on you & thats it. Black trails are generally steeper/ more tech so the speed is lower and if riding quick are fully engaged so less likely to have a crash, just from my experience.
  • 11 0
Personally i dont feel its inappropriate, understanding what happened helps me come to terms with loss and is a part of the grieving process. As riders there are always things we can learn and apply to our own assessments of risk or heavy situations we might encounter out on the trail. RIP bigman, you will always be an inspiration.
  • 2 1
@friendlyfoe: if you do a pinned run, I recommend you always use as much protection as you think you could need, because your rolling the dice. If you ride within what you think is your limit, your fine with a half shell. Except when it goes wrong, and sometimes it does.
RIP Jordie
  • 4 1
@sino428: @sino428: It was probably not just a blow to the head or a concussion, so much as the cumulitive affect of a lifetime of concussions finally catching up. It happens. Football players, extreme sports etc where there's repetitive hard hits to the head.

Jordie said in his beyond the bike interview something like " i think my worst injury is the 15 or so concussions"

I think it is foolish and doing the community a disservice for the community to act surprised when time runs out for people who choose to live there life this way.

I would not be suprised, nor would those who knew me, if i succumbed to head injuries, after all the hits.
  • 2 0
@jwestenhoff: there are $60 mips helmets, not saying that its impresseve or advanced. im sure there is much more to be developed to make people safer in helmets; but the reality is that wheels+gravity+brain+hard object=damage its just a dangerous activity and that is something we need to come to grips with.

Society is not encouraging so much tackle football, boxing, street fighting, etc to little kids because smashing your head into things, with our without a helmet, even as an adult male, but especially as a child with an undeveloped brain who is the responsibility of adults, is just asking for traumatic brain injuries.
I dont want to live in a nanny state, but it seems ironic that people are so concerned about childrens wellfare, not locking them in hot cars, letting them wander alone at night etc, but pinkbike and society generally has no qualm with sending some child whos skulls growth plates havent even begin to fuse down steeps and drops.

my point here is really basically, dont act friggin surprised when the time comes that you or someone you know who engages in this behaviour dies. every high level shredder must know they are going to suffer serious injuries over and over again throughout their career,

I had the pleasure of working with Jordie as a sponsor for several years. "Sponsor" is a loose term. He never had his stuff together, never knew what wheels he was needing for whatever bike he could get together for that season and never knew where to ship stuff. But I always held some budget out to be sure we took care of him. Because he deserved it. He was a rad guy and always made me happy to take care of him.

Ride on, Jordie.

Oh my god, this is terrible. As a Van Isle Loc, he was a complete inspiration from the first few years I started mtb'ing, as he was a sponsored racer for Santa Cruz. Years later I did some practice laps with him before one the local Parksville DH races, and he was the most friendly, down to earth guys I could imagine. What an absolute legend. My heart goes out to his family, and especially with those Bros that were with him on that trip. Darren has been tight with Jordie for ages, and that's a hell of a thing for those guys to carry with you through life. RIP Jordie.

I was lucky enough to be coached by Jordie during the first several years of Summer Gravity Camps. Every description of his incredibly kind, fun loving, nature was 100% true. Since the earliest days of freeriding I have always looked at Jordie as the beacon of how to live, not only on bikes, but life. This is a tragedy and I am sending strength to his family and friends in this dark time.

Please let us know of any way to help the family or support Jordie's legacy.

I had a vision in my head of who Jordie was. After the movie parts, the antics, the tats, the grill. And then I was lucky enough to work with him. And he blew me away. Yes, he was all of those in your face things but he was also soft spoken, polite, humble, and one of the kindest athletes I’ve ever met. He followed his own path and inspired so many others, myself gratefully included, to do the same. You will be missed by so many. Condolences to his family and loved ones. RIP Jordie.

Only met him once, stopped at his house with mutual friends - Saw him working with kids at his house on the island. Just doing it for the love - no event, no sponsors. No one to impress or cameras to record - How do you judge someone? By how they are when no one's watching.

Just a couple days ago I was watching Jordie in the video of Cam McCaul's backyard race, thinking about the first time I saw him in Roam all those years ago. This is hard to believe. Rest in peace. My heart goes out to the guys who were riding with him, too. It's got to be an awful experience to lose a friend like that.

Back in 2009 when I was younger I attended a bike camp in Whistler and Jordie was one of the coaches. He was always super energetic, hooting and hollering on the trail, really friendly. On our way down Garbanzo I got two flat tires and for the second flat I didn't have a tube or patch kit and was SOL. Jordie went out of his way and gave me his own bike to ride down a ways until we met with patrol to give us another tube. I don't think any ordinary coach would do that, but Jordie did. I will never forget that experience and i'm sorry to hear about his passing. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

I usually always open up pinkbike to see rad stuff when it's too late to ride or I am too tired and I want to fill myself with the happiness of biking. this was more than unexpected and heartbreaking to see this as the first thing when opening pinkbike. I wish I could do more than just send my thoughts and prayers to the people Jordie left behind. you won't be forgotten, legends never die.

I sincerely hope someone links his brothers and family to these comments. When this many people have such a faultless report of your family member it does good things for your heart, in life or death. I hope they know how important he was to so many of us, and how important his legacy will continue to be. I fear for the generation growing up with RoughAF as their benchmark for what’s possible to do on a bicycle. Things are about to get bigger, sketchier, and more insane now that he’s passed on his mantle to a generation of young psychos. I know it’s not just his insanity on a bike that he’s passing on, it’s his compassion and absolute refusal to judge others that will endure too. It’s only his body that’s passed away, his spirit lives in the heart of every madman/girl he continues to inspire. RIP you sicko. Miss you already.

Oh no!! I am so sorry to Jordie’s friends and family! This man was larger than life and losing him is sure to leave a gaping hole of sadness.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Jordie a few times over the years. CGP, Fest events (I was a spectator he a competitor), and a few times he was a customer at the store. He was a warm and wonderful person which was such a funny juxtaposition from his physical appearance.

Love forever Jordie Lunn RIP and my thoughts are with his family and close friends at this difficult time.

I'm the same age as Jordie and have been watching his video parts since we were both 20. A month ago, I had a fluke crash on an easy trail that put me in the hospital for a week and has left me with a severe traumatic brain injury. My helmet saved my life, full stop. I'm doing well, all things considered, and am starting intensive rehab next week. This news, though, is really messing me up. Jordie was always one of those guys that went down, but got back up. RIP, Jordie, and thanks for all the motivation. Strength to all of your clan in the days to come, and we'll miss you.

Jordie was/is the epitome of mountain bike freedom. In an age of bigger bikes, evolving tech and an abundance of great riders like we have never seen before, we tend to forget that this is still a sport that stares danger in the face.

His and McGazza's deaths reminds us that tragedy doesn't just come from the biggest drops or the gnarliest lines but also from somewhere we least expect it. Always remember to keep safe no matter the ride.

Damn who knew.. I've always looked up at this guys as super heroes people who are almost unreachable, n one day you realize that they are as human as you are. My condolences to his family I really can't imagine what they are going thru right now, and if there's anything that our community can do for Jordin's family I'm pretty sure we all would go above n beyond for you guys. Ride n peace Jordin.

I was lucky enough to meet Jordie riding up Bear Mountain. I was lost and he gave me directions. I didn't realize who was under that full face rockstar helmet until we parted ways. My thoughts are with Jordie's friends and family. Sad news and he will always be remembered. Legend.

I met Jordie at Black Sage fest last year, and he was the raddest dude. He was more than happy to chat about being an old guy rider as I am, among the kids out there. Our sport/lifestyle just lost a huge personality and one of the nicest guys out there. My thoughts are with you and your family Jordie. Peace brother.

 I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'
Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades
For ever and forever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little

All my thought go out to his family and friends! Such a warm, kind, strange, fun, creative guy. Appreciate the positive impact he had on all the kids during coaching, and all of us riders for his inspiring, crazy edits. A big loss for MTB. :-(
  • 4 0
So sad. I wonder what happened, are the trails in Cabo that crazy? Or was it just a freak thing? I know some of the worst crashes though are the easy trails cause you let your guard down and fly. So sad.
  • 3 0
R.I.P Jordie Lunn a True Canadian free riding legend that definitely helped the progression of mountain biking to reach such insane heights as it has now where kids these days are doing things I never thought would be possible
  • 3 0
This is ridiculous. One of the riders we all thought made up the permanent cosmos of mountain biking, we thought that Jordie would be here for ever. I’m gonna take some of his spirit and inspiration and make it my own next, and every time I go for a ride. He lived for what we all love. Simply. Like so many of us truly do.
  • 3 0
I love mountain biking and was a big fan of Jordie's. Staying relevant, not conforming and not slowing down at his age was a big inspiration to me. I am so sad for Jordie‘a loved ones and the mtb community that loved him. We will be riding with you in our hearts Jordie and I thank you for everything you did for our sport. You are a LEGEND,
  • 3 0
f*ck. No!!! Why???? I am so shocked!! I don't believe an earthquake could take him down... so gutted! I had a chance to thank him earlier this year at the vancouver show. Growing up he was one of my favourite people in mtb, and I had to thank him, as he was part of the reasons I changed my life to move to Canada from italy. Such an inspiring person!

Jordie was in his early 20's back in the mid 2000's when he was one of our coaches for the adult week at the Whistler Summer Gravity Camp. He fired us all up by showing up for one the days to coach and ride in a full tuxedo without the jacket. He partied with us at night and we nicked named him the "Manimal" because he was just a beast and a fun loving dude. Still remember racing him on plastic kids tricycles when we were all drunk in the village at the last night of camp. RIP Jordie, you are the best.
  • 1 0
Absolutely gutted, a sad day for the MTB community. My deepest respect to the Lund family and all they and Jordie offered to MTB on the island (and beyond). A humble dude from Parksville. I can remember Jordie back in the early 2000's charging down Hammerfest DH races. RIP Jordie.

I've been thinking this for awhile. It seems like a lot of pro riders are getting seriously hurt or killed in Jordi's case. Are we pushing the limits too far. After 30 years of riding I know it comes with the territory but this years seems to be excessive.
Enduro tracks seem to be getting more technical. Think of all the pro DH riders sidelined right now. Does social media push us to do things we may otherwise avoid?
I would hate to see something happen at Rampage this year. It seems that Rampage is all about pushing the limits but the consciences for those limits is only getting more severe. You can have a sloppy run at Rampage but if the tricks are big and the most extreme then you still score high.
  • 2 0
EWS has it's own issues. Zermatt had sections that were definitely too dangerous to race. Kind of felt the same way about Northstar. DH racing shouldn't be so technical that a crash could kill you. Rampage on the other hand is it's own ball of wax. If that's something that appeals to you all bets are off.
  • 3 0
@friendlyfoe: I don't think tech is by definition the most dangerous stuff, or at least, most likely to cause serious injuries. Tech often keeps the speed lower, and as one of our safe driving campaigns in NZ said, "the faster you go, the bigger the mess"

I'd rather see a few broken collarbones on Val di Sole's roots than a 70kmh cartwheel on an open section of Les Gets or MSA.
  • 1 0
@Preachey: I feel like MSA is pretty much a death trap from top to bottom. I don't know, it's a fine line between keeping the courses challenging and making top pros huck themselves into situations where crashing could be life threatening.

@mtnbkrmike: Simmer down now, we all handle this news differently. I didn't see any disrespect. What would be disrespectful would be turning the comment section into a petty fight like on every other post. RIP Jordie

I always wonder why after a tragedy like this, there no deeper look into how it happened and what if any thing could have prevented it.
Most of these reports don’t even mention the nature of the injury.
  • 1 0
 @CirrusWade: Same with Stevie Smith...
  • 1 1
 @RedBurn: Stevie wasn’t wearing a helmet....
  • 1 0
@tnelson91: For Real ? Was he riding motocross on a terrain or riding on the Road?
  • 1 0
@RedBurn: it’s been a long time since I read the article but I believe he was on some form if motorcycle.
