Marin bikes needs to sack up and support legal bike trails in Marin if they are going to be shooting videos on their home turf. Everyone seems to think its a good idea to blow up some of the only good hidden trails in the area.
I am developing a heavy disdain for the corporate videos featuring asshat riding and illegal trails. The corporate world needs to realize that in order for the sport to grow sustainably they cannot just be opportunistic and feature a nice looking trail and someone riding cool without vetting the legality of the trail or the trail impact of the featured riding. Far too little revenue is reinvested in the very trails used for the corporate ads!
Sure it may look good to skid around; cut corners, find new lines but all that does is promote trail usage conflict and may result in further access restrictions for us! With less trails there will be less room to ride and less merchandise to sell! Corporate cycling community, please be aware that in order for the industry to grow and be healthy, the trails need to stay healthy and usage conflicts ought not to be promoted!
@jsmoke before you make comments like that get to know the people at the company first. And they didnt blow up any trails. I will guarentee nobody is going to find where they are.
@OdinArts this comment really was not meant to call out marin bikes as not supporting or blowing up trails specifically, just an overarching issue that seems to come up often. I'm sure the people their are great and are not looking to cause any harm to the riding community.
Smooth fast riding. I enjoy that the sport is expanding, it'd be a shame for MTB to remain a sausage fest. I want to ride with my partner and share in the gnar!
Julia does have a very pretty smile.
^ this. I started getting my wife into riding about a year ago. Took a while to get her going good, and to be honest it was quite frustrating at times riding so slow. But now that she is getting faster and more confident, it is a blast. It's great bonding time! Not to mention now she understands the passion I have for the sport! She also sees that it takes time to perfect, so there are no more questions about long nights training. It's been great. Plus there is nothing better than taking mountainbike road trips and being able to...well you know, after a good day of knar!
Totally agree with Chilla8. Me and the misses both ride. Just about go do a couple of seasons in the alps(various locations), boards and bikes with both love em. So it makes for fun times.
I rode Tamarancho a few years ago while down in the Bay and realized just how luck we are here in BC. North Cali trails are beautiful and fun but so limited due to legal and land use restrictions. Such a shame - this is where it all started.
Funny how that ibis team video last month ended up being taken down due to the unsanctioned trails in the video, but put a girl on a bike riding close to the same trails (and some even more illegal ones) and the only comments are about how hot she is...
I live in Marin (Novato). Those trails did not look legal....which I am fine with, but if your going to poach share the wealth and let us all know where you filmed.
I lived in Marin (Novato) as well and completely agree. Anyone who lives or has lived there knows.........there is hardly any LEGAL singletrack in the entire county! Even with all that beautiful open space and trails, less than 1/100th of it is open to mountain bikes. It really sucks. Also the rangers there are aggressive, and a good majority of other users don't seem to like mountain biking either. It's unfortunate to say the least.
dgeahry, trust me, I know...I had a $250 ticket a week ago...riding a trail that was horribly marked and a trail runner turned me in....ranger wouldn't even let me talk or try to explain the bullish.. signage. Marin County is a joke.....bunch of rich pricks riding their horses and trail "running" (half the time I see them walking around aimlessly until they see me coming then get in the middle and act put out the they have to share the open space with me.
I've had that same scenario happen to me on many occasions when I lived there. Marin county is a unique place, I've never ridden in a place where I am literally looked at and treated like a nuisance just for riding my bike. It's absolutely insane. Even when being nice to other trail users by saying "Hi, have a good hike" etc. and being polite, you get scoffed at, completely ignored or just flat out rudeness. Thankfully most of the locals near my old house in Novato that I met on the trails we surprisingly nice. The mindset definitely needs to change in Marin. There are some people working hard to make that change, but it is SSSSSLLLLLLLOOOOOOOWWWWWWW progress. It's because of those individuals that we have any trails to ride at all.
Go ride out by Fairfax - no rangers and great trails to break the law on (ask the locals about Solstice for one). Or there's always Annadel an hour north if you want to play it safe!
We can't take credit for everywhere riders ride, but we advocate for legal single-track in Marin. That being said most of this video was not actually filmed in Marin County.
the few rides I've been on, the hikers have been cool, but I'll also acknowledge the bike community there seems pretty fed up with the situation... there is a sort of irony with marin being the self proclaimed birthplace of mtn biking, and now being one of the least hospitable places in the entire country to ride...
lol. I actually google searched shrill valley in marin, without success before figuring that out... I don't even mind that town actually -it's nice, but just roadies there I guess? I'd like to see a study or comparison done of erosion/damage done by bikes vs horses... plus, the actual horse shit itself, while fairly benign is annoying as, well, shit...
The battle is as such. There are a few rich horse owners and they have political control. Thus mountain bikes are prevented from the trails under the guise that we increase erosion. Rangers are out and proactively give tickets to the "poachers".
Mountain biking was apparently "founded" in Fairfax (Marin county) yet today there is only one legal [singletrack] trail in that area to ride (Tamarancho), in spite of there being an amazing landscape perfectly conducive to the sport.
Gosh! How come she's able to keep that charming smile during the whole ride? Every time I ride my face would be distorted like a monster! Too terrible to see the pictures after the ride!
I think that trail looked awesome! Great way to spend a ride. Then again I prefer rides wear I don't need armour...something about looking for my teeth mid ride keeps me off the aggro stuff.
I think I may actually be in love with Julia. Come to Devon Julia, we can go ride. I am not fussy which type either. XC or DH............ Of course that's what I mean, behave. haha ding ding.

Be really careful not to break an ankle getting off that high horse of yours.
Pinklameness
grow a pair
Dafuq is that supposed to mean???
Other side of Mt. Tam is cool; Fairfax represents for the MTB community.

It's certainly a sad state of affairs!
