 No Ric? Nice.
  • 13 7
I wish the guy no ill will, but I would be very happy if he was made redundant.
  • 15 2
Yeah, Ric is being course marshal this weekend if you couldn't tell.
  • 7 4
@the-smith: redundancy? I'd give him the sack.
  • 27 4
Carlso is doing a good job for his first time commentating. Hopefully they keep him on and he can grow into the role.
  • 3 1
Isn't his first time. He pretty good.
  • 3 1
It's such a nice change having both commentators 1) know what they're talking about and 2) add value to the broadcast.
  • 11 0
@boozed: Gwin seemed more relaxed because Josh gave him room to talk.
  • 3 0
However having said all that, there were more than a few moments in which Carlson simply repeated what Gwin had just said, with the same inflection and everything. Sometimes one or two words, sometimes a complete sentence. It was odd.
  • 2 1
@boozed: Noticed the same in the junior womens race (I've not had a chance to watch the others yet).
I also thought it a bit odd?
However on the whole he was light years better than the Ric and Cedric shitshow.... Or just Ric in general.

Can anyone on the field let us know why Asa was asked to stop in the wood section earlier???

 DICK POUND
  • 5 5
He went off course and maybe didn't get back on the course where he should have done maybe. That's the only possible thing I can think of.
  • 3 0
@JonnyNorthmore: hmmm I would like to think that was the case as well but Asa’s subsequent reactions didn’t seem to indicate it. He was puzzled still by the time he passed the finishing line
  • 17 1
@JonnyNorthmore: You can't stop a rider because they might have went off course. They finish their run, the potential DQ is assessed by officials, and the rider is informed of the result at the bottom.
  • 2 0
@JonnyNorthmore: looking at the replay he seems to take a course marker out while crashing. Then gets up and continues on track on the location of the marker. If this is going to be the reason for a potential DSQ, it would be a very controversial one
  • 2 0
@JonnyNorthmore: not super familiar with the rules, but I guess the situation you described would warrant a disqualification which is not the case.
  • 2 1
@Mattynf: Yep - agreed but I'm just guessing here as I can't think of any other reason.
  • 2 0
@knex: Yea it looked fine to me. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
  • 1 0
@cavitand: Totally. We'll wait and see what happened.
  • 3 0
 an over-keen marshal i reckon
  • 7 0
Even if he did go outside the marker do they really radio up to a marshall way down the track to red flag the last rider and get him off the track? That seems ridiculous.
  • 6 0
@JonnyNorthmore: They wouldn't stop you for that, it's never happened..ever. He should have gotten a rerun from what I can tell. His final position was definitely effected by the stoppage even though it appeared they paused the clock till he restarted. Thing is he was at a section where momentum is pretty damn important as well as being pulled out of a racing focus that he was probably just getting back in to a grove after the crash. BS
  • 7 1
@pisgahgnar: he’s listed as 21st so not DSQ, should get a re-run, stinks
  • 12 0
I am at the finish line. He saw the stigel flag a fan was waving and thought it was a red flag and touched him. They looked at it and there was no red flag or touching by a fan .
  • 9 0
@peytodog: ah shit. So just some mid race confusion. First big race run crash, disappointment, and mistake. Kids gonna learn, he will obviously still be one of the greats.
  • 6 0
@peytodog: damn, if that's the case then Asa learned a hard lesson today. Makes sense, realizing the -11 second on the clock was the split update right around where he stopped. He basically stopped for 15-20 seconds. Definitely would have kept the points lead had he finished out his run cleanly. Live and learn.

Josh’s commentary is a welcome change! Nice job.
  • 11 2
Woah PIVOT team sneaking in with some great results - Bernard K bringing on great talent and getting the outcomes. And what does he do? He manages and motivates a team, keeps the bike development going, ensuring talent development and training and does dog care - AND competes at elite level in Hardlines and World Series’. Bugger me, it’s impressive.
  • 7 5
Bangs some of the talent too…respect
  • 9 0
Erice was just too superb today! Especially going through that wood section, so smooth! Congratulations!
  • 3 0
Yeah, a great win for Erice, only one to hold the high line in the woods. Big props to Eliana too; totally wild run, feet more off than on the pedals through the whole woods section and still took second!
  • 9 0
I'm happy not to listen Ric's commentary. Good job Josh!
  • 8 2
It makes sense to keep Rachel in with gwin to sit in with the men’s racing as well.
  • 16 10
 asa deserves a rerun
  • 8 7
...with a 10-second start delay to account for his crash.
  • 5 0
@mi-bike: sure, but robbing him of a chance to keep the overall is pretty piss poor
  • 2 0
@wastesport: Totally. He should be allowed a re-run if the hold was a mistake, and since he has no DSQ behind his name, I assume it was.
  • 7 0
@JonnyNorthmore: He deserves the opportunity to get as many points for the overall as possible. Even though he wasn't going to win after his crash, he definitely would've placed higher if he wasn't stopped
  • 3 0
@chokoma: ....but do you know why he was stopped?
  • 2 2
@JonnyNorthmore: Because a red flag has nothing to do with the rider on course unless they are injured and can't be moved. It's always for something out of control of the rider and effects the safety of the run. If there using traditional flagging and he was at fault he would have received a black flag. They've never stopped a rider from finishing a run because of going around a flag or going off course and returning in the wrong spot. I would have went straight to an official and found out what happened. They paused his time and restarted it when they let him go. He definitely lost momentum through that section and could have easily knocked another second of before the bottom of not more. That's the point of a rerun, everything is unpredictable in this sport and interrupting that process has countless effects on the outcome. Every rider that has ever been stopped on track gets a rerun. Confusing as hell.
  • 1 0
 @MikeGruhler: Exactly, stinks
  • 3 1
@mi-bike: that's not how it works, plenty of racers over the years have been given reruns after a crash and run being red flagged later down the hill. Assuming he even thought he would get a rerun and backed off to the finish. Either way had he not been stopped and kept it at a 10 second gap he would still be leading in points.
  • 2 0
@MikeGruhler: Looks like it might not have been a red flag at all.
  • 1 0
@JonnyNorthmore: sounds like it, definitely makes more sense. Pinkbike should hookup with these trackside fans for some kind of live feed for this kind of information and updates during live events.
  • 1 1
@MikeGruhler: Pinkbike could use their own reporter to get the news from the ground.
  • 34 0
We have a quick interview with Asa about what happened here.
  • 13 0
@edspratt: What a lovely and considered young man. He'll go far.
  • 9 7
Asa should protest and he should get a rerun.
  • 14 0
Nah. watch his interview on Pinkbike instagram. He thought a fans red flag was a red flag on the course. Just flustered from washing out at the top. He owned the mistake.
  • 7 0
@BermSkid72: agreed. I'm firmly of the opinion that Asa's good nature & professionalism are at least as valuable to his sponsors than his undeniable pace & skill.
  • 1 0
Those conditions in lower woods were tricky! Bummer to see drama with Asa's run.

Asa needs to just reel it in a few percent and he’d still smash it

If Huter gets first place this season, will Gates pony up the 100k? Or not for juniors? He's came awfully close today!
  • 1 0
Super late comment here but - Huter would've been 25th in elite mens category. That bike is beyond sick looking. I could care less what my times ever were on this bike - it just looks so rad & it has to be an amazing ride.
  • 1 0
Very mature of Asa, but what happened to Mylann Falquet in the final split?
  • 3 1
 What happened to Asa?
  • 6 3
Crashed in the stump section. Then got told to stop for some as yet unknown reason.
  • 5 2
@JonnyNorthmore: the fans have red and white flags. He saw one of those and thought it was red
  • 1 3
@juanargent: they paused the clock though, so I’m not sure that’s the case
  • 4 6
@juanargent: You can hear Asa say on the feed that he was verbally told to stop by a course marshall.
  • 2 0
Well, I was wrong. Both Wyn TV and Downtime pod cleared it up. It was a fan.
  • 5 3
 Asa gonna get a rerun??
  • 12 0
 Next year.
