Junior World Champion Kade Edwards will be out for a bit after breaking his tibia in a freak accident where he fell off a swing and his leg got caught.
We're bummed for Kade and wish him a smooth and speedy recovery. We'll update with more news as we get it.
@sino428: True but to get back to race pace and conditioning it will be tight. Best case scenario he had hardware installed and can be back under his own weight in a few weeks
@adventuresbycole: ya true. I broke my tibia about this time last year, and had hardware installed. I was biking before walking but wasn't mountain biking till about 2 months after.
@adventuresbycole: Busted my tibia 3 years ago, and I had hardware installed (2 plates & 12 screws) and was non weight bearing for 5 months. It's not as simple as you make it sound
@m1dg3t: All depends on how severe the injury is, which at this point no one knows. A "broken tibia" could in reality mean a very wide range of treatments/recovery time.
Kade is constantly risking himself to do wild bike moves, its only a matter of a small miscalculation and blammo. He is very entertaining to watch doing this stuff, but this is the flip side of wild moves. Heal soon Kade.
Often thought this myself, alot of riders keep things low key during the off season preparing for next year, where as kade and a few others seem to use their off season to ride dj, bmx, moto x etc. It don't seem the most logical way of keeping yourself fresh, I understand the need to blow of steam and grt away from the day job, but maybe try darts.. Haha
@thejake: wow! One of the stupidest comments I have read EVER on pinkbike. Acting like a child in a playground on a swing which is designed for KIDS is what you consider calculated and worth the risk to his career? Hahahahahahaha. You’re probably a man child just like him. There are reasons why athletes like Patrick Mahomes isn’t allowed to participate in pick-up basketball games; it’s his team protecting their investment. So, just to reiterate, acting like a FOOL in a playground on a contraption meant for a child is responsible for someone of his caliber and justifies the risk involved? You’re a FOOL! Go back to your corner and play with your LEGO’s and crayons.
Nobody gives two shits what an NFL team does to protect their multi million dollar investment in this debate. It's totally irrelevant. Mahomes made 10 million from his rookie signing bonus alone, they are saying he will sign a 200 million dollar extension at some point.... If you cant see the difference between these two athletes and what they should do with their free time in relation to their careers you need to take a lap bud, may i suggest you do it on a bike so you can remember what this sport is truly about.
@CaliCol: if the fact, yes it is a fact, that young men are risk takers is the stupidest thing you have read on Pinkbike you haven’t been around very long buddy.
@neilbarkman02: no issues with the rod, but they had to cut open my knee to get the rod in, my knee was always stiff and would tense up, that took about a year before it went away
@Bfc: Hey guys....broke my Tib/fib last September. Got the rod (IM nail) and screws treatment. Six months in and still recovering. Knee fees pretty good, ankle not so much. Broke pretty low though.
Did you guys with rods/nail get the screws removed? I thinik I want mine out, a few of them are already bothering me.
@inverted180: I had the screws in the ankle removed since they were slowly making their way through the skin, at that stage the nail did not bother me. The pain started after 4/5 years, after fracture, I would say get the nail out the sooner the better since it is easier when it is"fresh".
@inverted180: I've still got everything in, but a few people have recommended taking it all out asap - however with how mine was done the doctor said that it's staying in there. Doesn't bother me at all though.
@Bfc: thanks for the replies guys. Bfc... the pain from the rod didnt start till 4/5 years later? That doesn't give me much confidence. Getting the rod out is a much bigger procedure than the screws... likely back on crutches, off work for a few weeks. Can't even think about doing that yet. What a crappy injury.
From someone who's just coming out of a 4-month break because of an injury ( achilles rupture ) ... get well soon... hope you mend safely and hastily...
Depending how bad the break, the type of break & location he's prolly out for 2 months. At least. With hardware, or without.
I was non weight bearing for 5 months when I broke my tibia, but I had 'complex' fractures (twisting/radial & impact/explosion) and busted my heel too...
Was expecting big things for him this season.
PS: Kade, When you're able, go to an orthopaedic Dr and get a custom ankle gauntlet brace made. The generic off the shelf stuff is useless for anything other than walking.
I’m gonna agree with being stupid on this one . This kinda behaviour is what separates the real pros from the normal pros , we all do dumb shit when we are young . But this kinda behaviour is what manufacturers look at when deciding to sign a athlete to a contract . Is his off track antics going to cost us money ?? . It also shows a lack of professionalism ,a proper athlete woulda had a PR person get out a statement and keep it contained. Now he just looks like a fool . World championship aside , many “ extreme “ athletes have a career ruined by off track incidents not just injuries. In a sport where your career is short and well paying factory ride is hard to get . Remember racing is only half the battle public perception, especially now a days with social media is almost if not more important than race wins . I hope mr Edwards walks away from this with out any long term side effects and hopefully realizes how lucky he is to have a dream job . And maybe make better choices moving forward
It's going Tibia-K!
Embarrasing that people didn't get this joke
