Kaos Seagrave To Miss Maribor World Cup Due To Lack of UCI Points

Apr 22, 2019

Kaos Seagrave

FMD Racing has posted on their Instagram that Kaos Seagrave will not be racing the World Cup in Maribor. After his injuries last year and an admin error he was not able to gather enough UCI points to compete in the first round of the 2019 season. The team is hoping to have him compete in Fort William at the beginning of June.

Riders need to accrue 40 UCI points or be selected by their national federation to enter a World Cup. Kaos currently sits on 31 points.

bigquotesDue to his injuries last season and an admin error from the team Kaos Seagrave does not have enough points to race Maribor World Cup.

Lady luck is not on this talented young lad's shoulders right now... Fingers crossed for the next few weeks and British Cycling will help for Fort William!
FMD Racing

We hope to see Kaos bringing his unique style and whips to Fort William in June, although reading between the lines, it seems a British Cycling selection will be needed to get him in the race. British Cycling can select up to three riders to race at each World Cup but they must wear team GB colours. There are currently four British riders with more points and a higher UCI ranking than Kaos who do not have enough points for World Cup qualification - Lachlan Blair, Jono Jones, Sam Dale and Kenta Gallagher.

There is a massive issue that no one has mentioned. There are a decreasing amount of UCI sanctioned races offering points on the calendar. Many countries National rounds don’t even offer points or if they do, only a few points are on offer. The catch 22 is that WC riders that don’t “need” the points are often the only ones that snatch up these points. Even racing World Cups, you would have to have at least four top fifty results in a season to earn at least another 40 points for the following season. At class 1 events like the recent IXS cup, UCI points are only awarded up to 15th position. (you would need at least 4 top ten placings in an IXS cup series to race World Cups the following year. Not an easy task considering the amount of top World Cup riders attending)
Now I have nothing against raising the bar and points needed for World Cup racing IF and this is a big IF there is a clear path regionally, nationally and Continentally of races and series’ offering Hors Classe, class one and class two points, that way there will still be opportunity for new riders to enter the talent pool each year. Ironically the UCI now does offer World Cup DH qualifying points to selected sanctioned snow bike races and enduro events ?!?!?! Which makes no sense as they are completely different disciplines in my eyes. World Cups will continue to see reduced fields (which is what UCI and Red Bull want) but in time this will be detrimental to the future lifeblood of the sport while disciplines like Enduro will continue to grow.

Enduro has a zero experience performance entry at all levels, so it’s expected to grow to a point.

Good there’s too many riders at the World Cup anyway and there’s only about 15 guys and three girls with any real chance of winning so why do we have 80 riders at an elite competition? They need a second tier series and leave the world cups for the best of the best.
  • 1 0
I totally agree Sven, but i think this is good ..as you said..all this riders they need to go down to nationals and regionals to earn points..and that would rise the level of nationals and regionals, showing other racecers their truth pace, and maybe encouraging them to jump internationally and get expose to sponsors..i see a win win here
  • 3 1
@thenotoriousmic: if World Cups as we know them today should be for premier athletes then 2nd class riders need their own World Cups? Wo is willing to another World Cup series for 2nd class riders only?
  • 5 1
@vhdh666: Well that’s the problem isn’t it? But that’s what the sport needs. Ether a champions league style format or a second division. World Cup racing should be for the highest level of racers not 150 / 200 racers turning up for 70 qualification places or whatever it is. That’s not the elite is it?
  • 1 2
Whilst accepting the points about feeder series into world cups I don't think 4 top 50 results in a season is that higher bar to keep your place in the elite ranks. If your not consistently in the top 20 then you unlikely to figure on the podium. You could change the way points are awarded in the ixs and similar series so they only go to those who don't have world cup elite status

Is enduro continuing to grow though? Certainly feels like the hype has died. There’s absolutely no coverage for the EWS at all other than a live time sheet so nobody’s going to care about the EWS in a few years unless they do something to keep us interested. It already feels like it’s already on the way out and I don’t know anyone who’s really that bothered about racing local and national level Enduros ether where two years ago they were all the rage.
  • 4 4
@chrismac70: honestly if you don’t make or aren’t capable of making the live stream what are you doing at a World Cup? Just making up the numbers? These riders need cutting out of world cups and they need a series where they can improve racing at their level with the ultimate goal of ranking up and making the world cups.
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: Could there be an argument for them having that many racers paying fees to enter these races? Essentially, setting up the track would be the same. More racers equals more fees, more spectators, etc. And there is something to a higher level of participation for riders. I love it when a top 75 rider cracks the top 20. Either way, there are financial realities to our sport that prevent them from replicating the formats of other sports.
  • 1 0
@njparider: have it at the same event then just have a different category for all the seriously talented riders who are to old or too good for the juniors but aren’t good enough to break the top 20 yet.
  • 2 0
I guess we need Continental Cups. For example in MX you have the World Championship races for MX2 (250ccm) and GPMX (450ccm) world wide. On all European rounds there's a European Championship for the 300ccm class. Translated to DH that would mean, the 2nd class riders would be allowed to race only the World Cups on their continent in their own "league".
  • 4 0
 @thenotoriousmic: I couldn't disagree more.

I can't speak for your local area but Enduro racing is off the charts big here. Every two weeks some where on the west coast there is an Enduro race going down. It's by far the most popular style of mountain bike racing currently in going on the west coast of North America.... Shit maybe even all of North America ...

As for coverage goes, The EWS is slowly moving in the direction of how WRC is shown on Red bull TV. None of it is live but a couple days after the event a shit ton of film coverage is edited and then narrated on top of to bring you a story of how the race went down with as many highlights put in to keep things interesting.

This really helps keep coverage costs down and you don't have to give up an entire day spent on your couch watching The.V
  • 1 0
@vhdh666: That would cut costs I would imagine. And, in theory, the locals would be more interested by pulling for their rider to make it to the top tier.
Regardless, things need to be set out differently than they are to be able to offer a better economic model to grow the sport in all disciplines.
  • 3 2
@TheBearDen: no I’m not going down to the races and counting heads or anything and every area is different and yeah that style of riding is super popular here to just nobody seems that interested in the racing side anymore.

Yeah I don’t think the EWS highlight videos are anywhere near good enough. There’s very little actual racing and a whole load of filler and slow mo. It’s rare I’ll actually watch one all the way through.
  • 1 0
@TheBearDen: it's a logistical matter as much as anything. Even when DH was big(ger), there was no real scene around here. I remember a Neds race years ago, but there's just not much around here that can realistically or legally shuttled and raced on within a realistic drive. Compare that to the UK where one always used to be able to get to a race or uplift event within a couple of hours, 10+ years ago anyway. Also plenty of DH friendly areas like Stile Cop / Cannock Chase, Chicksands, Forest Of Dean etc where it was easy enough to push your bike back up to the top ready for another 2 minute rip.

If you want to ride downhill fast, a DH bike is always going to be faster, and you don't need much of the tech that's in an 'enduro' bike. It wouldn't surprise me if there is a resurgence of DH in the UK. Not so much around here.
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: I can see your side of the point but at least looking at western US for example, there are enduro series in many of the states if not multiple different series (CO has 2 different big series), not including the one off races that happen too. Races happen all the time and the fields are pretty big and most races sell out. DH barely has races anywhere in the Western US anymore and if they do have them then its a low level series at best. The Pro GRT (DH national series) has 4 rounds spread across 4 months on different sides of the US...
  • 14 0
The root cause of lack of UCi races is the financial impact on the organiser. Running the BDS here in the UK we used to have 4 out of 5 rounds UCi accredited at one point. For each race you have to pay the UCi a registration fee of 1k euros, plus the additional prize fund, a further 3k euros plus, then anyone on a UCi Elite Team gets free entry so another 2k euros. Then additional UCi Commissaires, there expenses a further 2k euros and don't forget extra medics so a further 1k euros. So 9k euros extra per race that the organiser has to pay out of their own pocket. Ideally the organiser should add a further 30 euros to each entry (if there were 300 riders). Hence why no organiser in their right mind really wants to organise a UCi level race. Simple as that.
  • 1 0
@vhdh666: But 7/8 of the 2019 DH series is in Europe. North America has 1 round. Same in 2020. The European Championship would basically be the world cup -1 round. The North American Championship would be 1 round. Other continents 0.
  • 1 0
@ryguy79: that‘s correct. And there are continents where no Uci WC is held. So it‘s not gonna solve the problem

@panchocampbell: From Get Smart TV series that only old Americans remember:

The series centers on bumbling secret agent Maxwell "Max" Smart (Don Adams), also known as Agent 86, and his more sensible female partner, Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon).[7] Agents 86 and 99 work for CONTROL, a secret U.S. government counter-intelligence agency based in Washington, D.C. The pair investigates and thwarts various threats to the world, though Smart's incompetent nature and demands to do things by-the-book invariably cause complications. However, Smart never fails to save the day. Looking on is the long-suffering head of CONTROL (Edward Platt), who is addressed simply as "Chief".

The nemesis of CONTROL is KAOS, described as "an international organization of evil". In the series, KAOS was supposedly formed in Bucharest, Romania, in 1904.[8] Neither CONTROL nor KAOS is actually an acronym. Many guest actors appeared as KAOS agents, including William Schallert (who also had a recurring role as Admiral Hargrade, the first Chief of CONTROL). Conrad Siegfried, played by Bernie Kopell, is Smart's KAOS archenemy. King Moody (originally appearing as a generic KAOS killer) portrayed the dim-witted but burly Shtarker, Siegfried's assistant.

UCi points are gained from each race last for 12 months exactly. For example, a rider may have had 50 points accrued last week against their name and therefore able to race. But if 15 of those points were won exactly 12 months ago, the rider would only have 35 points next week and therefore would be unable to qualify. It seems that maybe the error. Not easy to maintain 40 plus points if you have been injured, the only option is to race as many UCi events as possible and come in the top ten (not easy). The other option is to ask your National Federation. If they say yes, here in the UK you have to buy a BC jersey and race in that. Something Peaty had to do several years ago.
  • 23 4
How do you screw this up? As a world cup DH team, you should know the UCI regs and plan ahead in the off season to ensure your riders meet all the qualifications needed to race. Regardless if the "admin error" was on UCI or FMD, you and your team should be all over it. If you're healthy and able to race, I can't imagine sponsors are too stoked to see you on the sidelines because you're 9 points shy of racing.
  • 17 0
"admin error from the team" end qoute.
  • 18 10
Wouldn't it be great if as long as you were fast enough to qualify you wouldn't have to worry about some big governing body that doesn't even have the best interest for this particular niche of cycling?!
  • 15 1
@coyotecycleworks: So what is your idea? Just have UCI world cups be completely wide open events where unlimited amounts of riders can just show up and try to qualify for finals?
  • 5 1
@sino428: Maybe unlimited amounts of Pro category riders?
  • 4 0
That's how it used to be and it worked fine. Of course you needed a pro license.
  • 2 0
 @sino428: 100%. ELbows out.
  • 2 0
@sino428: No you create something like a National UCI DH qualifying series. Maybe a series of 4 races in each country and the top 10 best averages can race (or at least attempt to qualify) in Elite WC. That way if you crash out/have a bad run you still have 3 other attempts to put in your best time. Problem with the current system is that there's a lot of travel involved to gather UCI points. Depending on the size of the country that puts a lot of privateers out. You could host the whole series over a week in one location that way you minimize the time/travel involved.
  • 1 0
@coyotecycleworks: But now you are contradicting yourself. In your last post you said...

"Wouldn't it be great if as long as you were fast enough to qualify you wouldn't have to worry about some big governing body that doesn't even have the best interest for this particular niche of cycling"

And now you saying the should have a National UCI qualifying series. I never said the current system was a good one. I don't really know. My only point was that there is probably a very good reason that some kind of qualifying is necessary, which you seem to agree with.
  • 20 3
This is a bad look for him, the team and UCI...but assuming he is healthy, there were probably plenty of options to get points if they had known they needed 40. The IXS race this past weekend was a UCI Level 1 race with probably more than half the world cup field. The Portugal cup last month in Lousa was a UCI race with folks like Gee, Hart and Pierron all showing up and the top 10 all getting 10+ points. Its unfortunate but it was a dumb mistake by the team. :/
  • 10 3
Just can agree with that. If you already drive down from GB to maribor compete for f.... sake. Luxury problem! We used to get in as many races as we could in a season. Saving energy is kinda an excuse to me. Mx or Sx have several races a day. Which are surly more intense! try harder!
  • 11 1
Anyone else find it ironic that Tahnee said something along the lines how world cups should be more elite last season yet her brother who is more than skilled enough to be there can’t race due to not having enough points due to injury and mechanicals. That’s a guy with a clear financial advantage and politics might make it so he can race when someone with more points can’t at their home race in ft William. Screw the points and who cares if a few guys and gals don’t quite belong end up on the hill. let the qualification runs speak for themselves. Add a c practice if you need to.

Exactly. The gestapo at the UCI needs to immediately address what ever error it is and resolve it. Kaos isn't some random barely making the cut from an unknown team. He is a top rider and 'admin error', regardless of the origin, isn't a valid excuse at this level. Figure it out UCI and British Cycling.
  • 42 5
@bman33: I would disagree with him being a top rider. Even healthy he has missed qualifications multiple races. Maybe he found his speed during the off season. To me however, he has not proved he can hang with the top boys.

If he truly missed all the points due to not performing, fair enough. However, seems the injury alone wasn't enough to pull him from Maribor, the 'admin error' was. BS regardless.

Since Kaos' move to Elite, we did not realise how the injury from last year would effect his points (with surgery on his collar bone putting him out of racing for the rest of 201Cool . In February Kaos had enough points to race the World Cups... since then he could not compete in the DH in Rotorua due to injury. This and another race meant those points he did have have been knocked off. It is a simple admin error from the team - NOT the UCI. We will have this exciting young racer back up there ASAP!

 @Zafotheviking:

Kaos was in his first year Elite last year, in his first Elite World Cup he came 36th. He ranked higher than Finn Iles and Matt Walker. He then punctured at the next round in fort William in qualifications. Unfortunately, while also showing his talent and competing the full crankworx series, he broke his collarbone, with complications that put him out for a whole year. Not only has he proved himself as a stylish rider but to say he doesn’t have the speed is obviously someone who doesn’t watch the riders first hand, week in week out.

There was a miscalculation of points, and as we are no longer a UCI team as if this year, your point score must be higher. Once realised FMD applied for a jersey but they had already gone.

@tahneeseagrave: Then there is a UCI bit that sucks. I'll have to read into this. What does it take for a team to become "elite" so that you need fewer points to compete? Is it some kind of status gained from good results in previous year(s) or is it simply a status a team can buy. No need answer all that for me personally (you should be riding your bike) but it would be cool if someone could point me in the right direction. If it is a status a team can just buy, that would suck. Either way, I hope to see Kaos race again.  I am not fast enough either. So I will be missing the race. I am also a bad footballer and singer so had to peruse a different career to pay for my mortgage. Head down, train hard, enter some races, get enough points if you can and come in strong and motivated. Nobody is here to just give you an entry. There are many riders who chase the minor places who live on the bubble financially to chase the dream, its also not for the fast riders to not show up to races to allow the slower riders in, the fast boys need competitive races to know where they are and be up to speed.

Want to race World Cups? You will need at least 40 UCi points. If you gained any points this weekend, for example, they last for 12 months only from the day you got them so you have to keep topping them up.

You can apply to your National Federation for consideration and wear their jersey as they can take three spots in both men and women. Think of it as a 'Wild Card'.

In the UK we have a round of the WC at Fort William, as the host nation we are allocated 8 jerseys (spots) for Wild Cards in both men and women.

Page 80 is the points table.

Might have to do what every other rider that wants to race world cups does. RACE other races to get points, it’s no easy ride to become a top level World Cup rider. He may have to miss a few world cups to get points racing nationals etc. He didn’t even attend the first UK national DH. Those races are what make good World Cup riders just look at the list of UK riders that have come through the ranks.

He’s quite clear it was just a cock up, he had points, got injured, points expired. Not the end of the world, Kaos is young and he’s got plenty of time to make up for this.

Hang in there Kaos were all routing for you, go chase those points and Hope British Cycling come through!
Good luck!

Any reason he can’t race with the British Cycling jersey for the Maribor World Cup? Not enough notice or time to coordinate? Maybe somebody already has it for Maribor?
