Apr 21, 2009

Source: Sir Racealot

First off I want to say thanks to all the keen builders, I've received a bunch of emails from people excited for the Kelso build day and wondering when it will be. It's always a super fun way to get together, throw some dirt around and see what everyone is riding for 2009.Build Day Details:

When: April 25th, 10:30 am
Where: Kelso Conservation area, Sunset Lodge (registration lodge), park in the western lot and walk over the big bridge.
What: Bring shovels, rakes, pics, axes etc

Please be sure to tell the Kelso front gate you are an Ontario Cup DH Volunteer, this will get you into the park for free.

I can also sign any documents for student volunteer hours.

I'll be providing snacks and water for everyone, those providing a full days work on the course will receive a discount on Practice Day registration.

Hey, at least these guys make do with what they have instead of whining about it on the internet.

Ontario may be vertically challenged but we more than make up for it with one of the strongest DH communities in North America. With Canada's Largest DH/Super D/4X race series we've been able to help athletes take podiums at the Nationals Championships several times, send many athletes to World Championships, even womens and junior mens national titles from Sheila Morris and Justin Brown, Pete Mclean landed on the national champ podium a couple years ago too, etc etc etc.

An amateur video is never going to give you a real perspective of any course, nonetheless we're happy with what we've got and we're doing our best.

Man good old Kelso/Glen Eden... so many good memories of that place growing up... fro snowbaording to mountain biking to running.
glad to see it is still going strong... as for anyone hating on onatrio... f*ck them... its second best province in the country once you get out of the cities...

The hardest part of the course is a drop of like 8 feet, you guys should be clearing those crash pads by 20 feet.
  • 5 0
Yes, because we all possess your abilities.
  • 0 1
hes right no one looks very pinned through that drop. if that had been a UK race the majority of riders would have been sending that, especially with the course being so flat, carrying your speed through that section is very important.
  • 1 0
 try like 6 feet
  • 0 1
Is it uphill going into that section? Just wonder why everyone is going so slow.
  • 1 0
It is uphill going into the section. Your nomad might get nice pop if you have flow over the rocks leading to the drop but you could never send it 20ft passed the blue bags.

But my main question, juleous, why are you sitting on your computer posting on how 'lame' a course is in the middle of southern ontario?...you are 33 years old.

For kicks and giggles the same reason anyone posts on pink bike. E-battles are cool didn't you get the memo?

Where is the unsubscribe button anyway?

Dude, you have to see the run into that drop. It is sketchy to say the least. The most technical line i have come across in Ontario. And we don't have mountains around so we make do with what we've got. Unfortunate but it is what it is.
  • 9 1
no need to be a prick just because you've got better terrain. Ontario doesn't have big mountain riding the way you guys have it, but that doesn't mean we can't ride. i guarantee that some of the local boys here huck bigger and ride better than a lot of you BC guys. there are many ontario riders racing on the WC circuit and thats coming from a place where on average, the DH courses are 1-2 minutes with only a couple hundred ft of elevation if that. short fast races are much less forgiving than longer ones. try making up for a even a simple 2-3 second mistake on a course thats only 100 seconds long. we make do with what we've got and all you can do is tell us something we already know. well if i was in your position, i wouldn't be a dick to people because of their riding situation, i'd be out taking advantage of my own.

Honestly though, you guys could hammer that shit on a decent all mountain bike. Take a Santa Cruz Nomad or Rocky Mountain Slayer SXC to that track and you'd be able to hit all the hard stuff with ease and pedal like a mofo on the flats. If I wanted to win there, that's what I'd be doing. Screw the big bikes, hammer it on an all mountain rig. Those double crowns are just going to hold you back. Maybe the footage doesn't represent the terrain well, but even that 'big' drop could be taken at speed on a bike with 6 and 6. My god, you'd kill it on a bike that could pedal!!
  • 1 2
Totally agree, I would take my nomad and smoke all you clowns on your big bikes.

a lot of the top guys who race O-Cup use smaller travel bikes, and a lot of people with big bikes also ride and race courses outside of Ontario where you need the extra travel. not everyone has the luxury of being able to afford 2 DH bikes. i've ridden BC and it's great, beats the hell out of Ontario for DH, but that's our concern not yours. so why don't you go ride your great trails instead of bitching about how our trails suck under an article that not only doesn't concern you at all, but is here so Ontario riders can get together and make our province a better place to ride. why do you BC riders always have to hate on Ontario? it's all we've got and we're just trying to make the most of it.
  • 5 0
I gave you props because you're completely correct. I'm not hating on Ontario, I grew up there, and as a climber and mountain biker I know all too well what the terrain is like. Still, we made the best of it like you guys are doing. Have a good season.
  • 1 0
thanks dude. it's just a little frustrating when you're out building every week to try and better the riding community and all some people can do is put down your efforts. hope you have a good season too.
