A quick interview with Squamish born and raised, Kyle Quesnel.

Chris Ricci: As a rider, what was it like growing up in Squamish?

Kyle Quesnel: I couldn’t have asked for a better place to grow up! The people in this town are all so awesome. The trails I grew up riding are still my favorite trails I get to ride every day! I was lucky enough to have grandparents that had some land and they let me do whatever I wanted with it. My dad would get us a machine to use every summer and we would rebuild the jumps bigger and better every year, I can't thank them enough for giving my friends and I that opportunity.

The lack of snow in the Sea to Sky area this winter has left us with some pretty all time biking conditions

Over the past few years, what types of changes have you seen in the trail networks?

Over the last few years the trail network has exploded in Squamish. It seems like every ride you can see a new trail being built or repaired. Ted Tempany of Dream Wizards is a major part of why the trails in Squamish are so amazing, He spends endless hours building and rebuilding trails after major storms and is always making changes to the trails to make them better for everyone! Thanks, Ted and all of the other trail builders out there, you guys rock!

Would you say that these trails have a positive effect on the overall community?

The trails definitely have a positive effect on the community. The parking lots are always full with people from all over the world, riding the trails that we have here. More people means more business to the whole community.

One day I'm going to pack myself and my family off and come and ride these awesome trails for a bit, maybe even just stay after stupid isolationist brexit happens. You guys who live there sure are lucky.

@Scotj009: Whistler is sweet and the bike park is great, but trail riding in Squamish is way better than Whistler in my opinion.

sometimes i don't notice the riding at all and just stare at the trail and background in these edits. then a single tear falls.

Don't worry, isolationist Trump is equally interested in forging a new trade agreement with post-brexit UK, good news for chain reaction cycles!
  • 1 0
@kierz: I never went back either. 10 years I've been here now.
  • 2 1
Yep with the whole trump thing in the us I might need to move to Squamish
  • 1 0
@wee-eck: I live in BC now but I sure miss riding in Scotland. It's a different style here, it's not necessarily better but there's definitely more.
  • 1 0
@Bob-Agg: I was in Vancouver for 7 year and miss the riding there everyday now that I'm back in Bonnie Scotland. I found a couple of gems today but you can't beat a quick rip on Fromme or Seymour after a sh!tty day at work. On a plus side I have started digging my own trails. Rip Boogie Nights a new one for me Smile

'Come visit Squamish and do an 80ft death gap!' That's my type of tourism video right there.
  • 5 3
Thats some wild west stuff right there!

Normal tourist destination videos would be like green trail, superflow yada yada. Kids and Joeys enjoying the trails. Squamish goes full on DH and canyongap.

Kovarik saw the comments calling his last video lame.

I remember giving Kyle, Connor and Dixon a mini ex for the weekend and coming back and being a little worried how big the jumps were! 80 ft death gap? You should have seen the shaky 20 ft death roll in...

"More people means more business to the whole community"
Not sure how much more people the squamish Valley can handle. Just in the last 13 years its exploded...wait to see the next 10 years or so.

Such a rad place !!

I think it's already at it's max for people who call it home. I remember day dreaming about moving there after I finish school and when I looked up housing opportunities in BC, Squamish was one of the only ones that rang in at 0%. People that live there never want to give it up and I don't blame them.

There is dusty dirt in BC!? I thought it was all perfectly damp super tack! Maybe it was just an illusion because he was riding so damn fast?
  • 1 0
it was a complete dust bowl around here two summers ago, last summer, not so much
  • 2 0
@imho4ep: I was curious because last summer when I was out there The couple days I spent in Squamish were WET! haha

Didn't Cam McCaul just show that gap destroyed in the VW video?
  • 1 0
yea, maybe this video is older?
  • 1 1
@icedcoffee: It was from a NWD movie from 2007 or 08 maybe.
  • 1 0
Apparently some kid wrecked himself in it this fall so they cut out the lip. This video was filmed in the summer, VW video was filmed in the fall.

Could someone from this area, please tell the names of some of these gnarly trails and I also would love to know the name of the trail at the end with this massive drop/gap in to nothing, placed in this video: www.mountainbikingbc.ca/vancouver-coast-mountains/squamish Thanks.
  • 5 0
they are mostly riding 19th hole and that gap is off a trail called hoods in the woods

Someone, NASA, Space-X, the Canadian NASA, Australian NASA, whatever, needs to get Kovarik and his bike on a rocket to the moon.

The Karver is back at it again, destroying the trails!!! Finally.
  • 1 1
We must keep eyes out , It is sad to see the trees down, seems more to come, let's hope not , Save The Trail and Tree needs to be in play here and all over this great divine ,,On another note , must be a huge mind fux when you come out of the woods to open trail and hill with trees down, line selection looks to be a must, that and experience,,I would love to move out there for like a year and learn the trail, all of them ..might not come back...RAMFB and Save The Trail and Tree...

Good work guys, that was SICK!!!!!!
  • 1 0
My knees are shot so I rely on uplifts or good old push ups.... what's the deal in Squamish? Is it vehicle assisted? how much? does it cost?
  • 2 0
You can shuttle some of it, for me DH bikes aren't what comes to mind when I think of Squamish, most of the trails you need to pedal to.
  • 2 0
f*ck me sideways, this Video is soooo sick! It got me so pumped on riding, but shit i gotta lern for exams :/
  • 1 0

Hey, Squamish! I passed that town on my way up to Whistler!
  • 4 0
Honestly, you really missed out man.
  • 4 0
@mountain-life: I was just joking, because the guy in the video says, "Squamish is no longer the town you just drive by on the way up to Whistler." I think it went over everyone's head. I'm sure it's a fine place. And I did drive by it on my way up to Whistler, but I only had one day to ride, and I had my mind set on the bike park.
