Video: Lee Gratton Winter XC Race Training

Mar 14, 2014
by Thomas Gaffney

Lee Gratton is a midlands based rider riding for Trek Coventry in 2014.

Originally coming from a downhill background Lee raced in the British Downhill Series for a few years but never really broke top 10 in the senior category. He didn't have much luck and through the time I've known him he always had always had some sort of problem come race run with punctures and chains snapping which brought his races to an abrupt end. He has also overcome some massive crashes. In 2008 he hit a tree and had surgery on his knee and he also took a tumble breaking his wrist and collar bone late in the 2013 season.

Despite the setbacks Lee never stopped and in fact found a new love in Cross Country racing. Due to a crash in training last year he had to miss the last 3 races but was so far up on points he was still promoted into the elite category where he will be racing in 2014. This year he has gone all out, dropping his job to part time hours and getting out riding as much as possible and training for the season ahead. He is an absolute whippet up the hills and a monster on the downhills due to his previous background so expectations are high, but I've no doubt he can do really well.

Lee is always smiling, joking and such a pleasure to be around. Make sure to keep an eye out for him at the UK Cross Country races (you can't miss his socks.)

Train with him. He is so quick on the downhill. Natural rider...

No wonder he looks awkward, he's hitting everything with the seat at full extension. How does he do that?I can't do anything unless the saddle is as far away from my arse as possible.

He could do with eating a few mars bars!

There 2/3 clips of him jumping over the fire road but I've not ridden that trail before. Anyone know what it's called?

A lot of it isn't the actual monkey trail, but its all around that area

There's loads of good stuff around the Chase if you just look - some of the runs on this are a stones throw from the Monkey Trail. Literally...

Been riding there for years and only found the trail with the hip jumps a few weeks ago I should explore more instead of sticking to the marked trails

The trail with the hip jumps is the 'Blue spade trail', credit to Harry Clark- who runs the Racers Guild at Stile Cop. Salute

 This dude rips but I 'm afraid I can't see past the lycra/big wheels/narrow bars/high saddle.
  • 23 3
You mean you cant see past the skills required to manoeuvre the bike so well with those 'big wheels', 'narrow bars', and 'high saddle', and the balls required to ride like that with only some lycra to protect you rather than body armour and a full face?
  • 4 4
No not at all, I respect it, the look just isn't to my taste! Haha. Of course I'm sure it works far better for cross country racing so I understand why..

This dude would tear you a new one on a DH bike. I've raced against Gratton on DH, and he's the real deal on a big rig too.
  • 5 1
Well that's just irrelevant, particularly considering the first thing I said was that he's a sick rider
  • 1 1
I doubt the internet will care until he can whip on an XC bike in lyrca with his seat up. Big Grin
  • 2 5
Get ride of the lycra and drop your saddle and this would sick. Fair play on a hardtail though!!!
