In May of 2004 Gibb and Frankowski decided that they wanted to do a film together, shortly thereafter the name Life Cycles was conceptualized. Being unknown filmmakers they determined they needed footage to show they were capable. At the time Film was the best medium available and it was decided that Life Cycles would be shot on 16mm. Over 2004 Gibb collected enough footage to make a teaser. In May 2005 the above teaser was edited and Life Cycles now had something they could approach sponsors with.

Between May of 2005 to March of 2007 Frankowski was occupied with a successful photography business, while Gibb was finishing up Film School and shooting the Travis Pastrana Documentary “199 Lives”. The search for sponsorship was bleak until Scott Bicycles stepped up and became the first sponsor of Life Cycles. At this time Gibb and Frankowski decided to stop everything else they were doing and focus solely on Life Cycles. With the announcement of the Red One camera they decided they were no longer going to shoot the movie on film and switched to digital. With the Red One still along ways from being completed IDT Vision lent them one of their highspeed cameras and in August/Sept of 2007 they were able to shoot the above teaser. With the aid of this second teaser Life Cycles was able to secure their second sponsor Shimano.

Panasonic HVX200
As February 2008 rolled around, Red One was behind schedule and the Life Cycles crew started to get anxious. They decided to buy a Panasonic HVX200 and Redrock Micro hooked them up with a lens adaptor. They choose Southern Utah as their first shoot/scout mission. Very quickly they found out that the HVX200 was not the camera they wanted to shoot Life Cycles on and decided to postpone shooting until they could get a Red One.

Red One
On April 24th 2008 The Life Cycles crew picked up their Red One. This is when official production started on the film. They finally had a tool that could capture their vision and went to work doing just that. The clips in this folder are the shots that hit the cutting room floor and didn’t quite make it into the film.

The Contest
The point of this contest is to take all of this unused footage from the Life Cycles past and present and create the most wicked awesome edit possible. You have four different folders you can mix and match from. The edit can be as long or as little as you like. You must only use the contents provided in the folders, with the exception of music and sound design. Music is the entrants responsibility. The edits will be judged by the Life Cycles crew, pinkbike and community and the winners will receive prizes from the sponsors. Grand prize: Scott Voltage

This is rad!!! First of all, we can play with your junk, secndly: We can study a lot of master arts of editing and the best thing, IF we do well, we get prizes!!! I think all the guy's from pinkbike who have edited at least one video should try this one out. I Will defnlty make one on my own!!

Also, are we allowed to use your landscape footage's on our own videos? I mean, can i cut your material for my own productions? Big Grin this might look cool..
By the way, i'm total beginner in editing world, just starting to study!

YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! Am I to understand that I get to play with raw Red One footage? But what is "proper musical clearance"? Would I need to get in contact with the record label, etc. or just have purchased the music legitimately?
  • 1 0
this is a great question.. radek?
  • 1 0
just like any other video that you upload to the internet. I'm sure it's no big deal for a 2 min clip on and worst case it gets deleted. but it's up to you what and where you get the music
  • 1 0
Hey, and where can I get gunzip to unzip the .gz files??? I've been looking everywhere but I can't figure it out...
  • 1 0
try "7zip" if your on a pc... on mac you should have no issues
  • 1 0
 Never mind, Winzip works.
  • 1 0
but we wont be dsq from the contest if you use someone elses music?
  • 1 0
its not full res red footage, its footage shot on a red, and trans coded to 720x360...so don't get too excited
  • 1 0
It's not full res because the output medium wil be the web anyways. Most people would not be able to handle it anyways. BUT, you do get the super slow motion and dynamics of those cameras so the footage is awesome.
  • 1 0
Exactly, real red files are .r3d -- And don't worry about music, like Radek said it's gonna be fine. Your not selling peoples music in videos, your just uploading it for free.
  • 1 1
I was just all juiced up to play with 4k... Razz

So how is the winner determined exactly? Max views, judging (by whom?), or a combo of both?
  • 1 0
we'll take the top videos with the most views and they will be judged by the PB and Life Cycles guys.
  • 1 0
 OK, makes sense.
  • 3 0
dont get me wrong guys, i am super stoked for this recut BUT sounds like this might turn into a "popularity contest" if judged/sorted by the most views..
  • 1 0
You try to get the most votes for you video so it rises and you are sure it is noticed and seen and makes it infront of the judges. The judging happens from there based on lots of other criteria.
  • 2 0
How do you vote for a video in the contest?
  • 3 0
I have a question for those who work with Sony Vegas, what kind of image format do we need to use the logos? I tried converting them to jpeg and tiff and png but either the program doesn't open them or they dont work as they're suposed to..
  • 3 0
go to the page with the raw footage and just save the sponsor images at the bottom of the page
  • 1 0
 Thanks a lot mate Wink
  • 5 0
 *Waits for Aaron's recut....*
  • 1 0
 Seconded!
  • 3 0
Okay the contest page said two minutes and this page says as long as we like. Who should I believe?
  • 2 0
i'm confused as with dent, the contest page says it may be as long as we like how ever this page says 2 minutes, its 3 minutes 28 acceptable?
  • 1 0
Amazing footage ! The only problem im having though is that .mov files dont work with my Sony Vegas, I just get a black screen for every clip, anyone know if this can be fixed ?
  • 1 0
maybe you dont have quicktime installed? I'm running vegas and having no problems with the mov files so it must be possible, only problems are i cant use the sponsor logos which are in eps format.
  • 1 0
are we limited to no linger than 2 minets? done a ruff cut and im at well 6 minets at the moment i know its a bit long for a trailer but just need an idear of how much of a diet i need to put this on
  • 1 0
 I believe they said 2 minutes +/- 30 seconds.
  • 1 0
Anyone else notice that the frame size of the 16mm is 569x360 and the rest of the footage from the other cams is 640x360... This is kind of gay since we have such low res clips to start with.
  • 1 0
Yes, it's just a different aspect ratio. What I did was scale the clip up to about 114% to get it to fit the 16:9 ratio. Doesn't look too bad.

I also noticed they're not all at the same framerate. I just went with 29.97 and it seemed to do fine.
  • 1 0
how strict is the 2 minute aspect? i have one planned out that is about 2 minutes and 30 seconds, but there are portions at the beginning and ends without riding...
  • 2 0
Not very strict. +- 30 seconds.
  • 1 0
 awesome, thank you
  • 2 0
What a cool idea. I may have to play around with my video editing and get something submitted.
  • 1 0
Someone should write up a little tutorial for rendering settings.... some of the recuts are nice edits, but spoiled by whatever rendering was done before uploading.
  • 1 0
My Export settings in Premiere CS5:
H.264
NTSC
640x360
Frame Rate: 29.97
Field Order: None (Progressive)
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Bitrate: VBR 2-pass
Target Bitrate: 6Mbps
Maximum Bitrate: 10Mbps

Make sure to check "Use Maximum Render Quality"

Hope that helps.
  • 1 0
I see everyone is using the Life Cycles logo... I kept it out thinking that we are just supposed to use the material given to us? What's up with this.
  • 1 0
They must have included it later on. It came in the "logo" file that I downloaded. I think you can use whatever you want, though.
  • 1 0
Hey i have a big problem i cant seem to get the video on to imovie. I have a mac and been trying alot of things, if any body can help me it would be GREAT!!!!! Thanks

  • 2 0

  • 1 0

www.pinkbike.com/news/life-cycles-recut-contest-2010.html

2nd paragraph.
  • 1 0
Important question: Can I add to the film some words or short phrases? Or are we limited only to the logos?

  • 1 2
Can we get the Red R3D's instead of low res quicktime files?
I don't see how we are getting 'Raw files' if they are all transcoded...
  • 3 1
imagine downloading such files. it would take ages.
  • 1 0
Raw footage, not RAW (.r3d) files
  • 1 0
Yeah dude, I wanted to play with the .r3d files, not 640x360 .movs..... *sigh*

Footage is RAD though, crazy sick stuff. I want their mojo.
  • 1 0
It would be sick, but like pkabat said, you'd be downloading those for hours...
  • 1 1
I have crazy slow internet, but it would be SO worth it Razz They could have at least gone with 1280x720...
  • 2 0
 Need png logos please!
  • 2 0
Found them bottom of website. Big Grin
  • 1 0
What quality and size must be???
  • 1 0
I would stick with the native resolution of the files; 640x360 and as far as quality, as high as you possible can.
  • 1 0
wish i had editing software now grrrrr
  • 1 0
I cant get the videos from the files. help anyone? EDIT: nvm got it
  • 1 0
dezim make sure you have quicktime installed LOL no shit
  • 1 0
 sorry for trying to help
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
could anyone send me the contest materials? I would appreciate it
  • 1 0
could anyone send me the contest materials? I would be grateful
  • 1 0
 Never mind...
  • 1 1
What do we do of our logos in .eps ?
  • 4 0
I'm having issues with .eps also.
Any chance of the logos in .png format? Thanks.
  • 1 0
Download Adobe Photoshop CS4 or CS5, if you don't already have and you will get eps opened up. When you will open it up just save it into a format you prefer and the resolution you like. simples... demz
  • 1 1
Thanks, i didn't thought about PS CS5 even if i have it ! It would be easier for everyone if logos are in PNG
  • 1 0
eps saves more data and you can manipulate into whatever you want or how you want, hence a lot use eps to save the vector properties... unlike a png. it's a format that is being used widely and you can open in a lot of programs. demz
  • 1 0
As was mentioned, the .eps files are vector based and will render nicely even at small sizes, whereas with png you need a higher resolution file to combat jagged edges.
  • 1 1
Which program for editing is required?
  • 1 0
any that you feel comfortable using, which reads all the files...
  • 1 0
 this is gonna be sweet!
  • 1 2
I have the same problem. This competition doesnt work with PC's lol have fun mac boys
  • 1 0
 just convert the files ?

you can get programmes that do it for free

i use one called super, works fine
  • 1 0
make sure you have quicktime installed
  • 1 0
PC will work fine. Just need the proper programs and codecs.
