Whistler is always one of the toughest races on the circuit - and the 2019 edition is no exception. This year's course encompasses everything that makes the riding here so iconic - technical, varied and relentlessly physical. For the first time in its six year history the race is taking place over two days. The Queen stage was held on day one, and there will be five stages on day two. Check out the course in our EWS Whistler Pinkbike Primer and in the course preview video below.

Riders are on course now for a slippery day two in Whistler. We'll keep you updated on the action throughout the day.

@thesharkman: Only an elite athlete could even consider racing an EWS at 6 weeks post fracture. And its definitely not recommended. Throw on top of that he's been sitting on Zwift for 6 weeks and I think some serious credit is due! Now please heal up fully Jesse!

Ok that wasnt just my phone. EWS needs to update the coverage for next year
  • 2 1
any other site we can follow the race?
  • 11 0
Yeah, how can a site be running on one broken leg and some bandaids during one of the years most anticipated events? Constant error messages (tried multiple platforms) Refresh not working, no new updates after stage 5.

Come on EWS, you can find a better IT guy than your 14 year old nephew.
  • 2 0
Head to @nzracing to follow NZ EWS updates on IG
  • 4 0
Agree. EWS coverage has been pathetic. Definitely it has been off at most of the events this season, but its at a low at Whistler. Look at Lazerslide and there's all sorts of coverage... But Whistler? Crickets...
  • 8 0
 @uberstein: 10/10 would ride Lazerslide
  • 1 0
 @Giddyhitch: made my day hahahahaha
  • 4 0
@kusanagi72: just an fyi... The reason there were no updates after stage 5 is because the cliffside gondola broke earlier in the day... This caused a 45 delay to start if stage 6 for all catagories. So unfortunately that left a big gap in the race and live timing had no new info to refresh. I heard a lot say live timing had crashed for them but in reality the race was just on hold.
  • 5 0
@davetrumpore: no it was more than that. There wasn't a single text update of the men on stage 6, just had to keep checking the timing page. The live timing kept resetting and crashing all weekend. In previous years it ran really smoothly and you could even track the riders GPS, see exactly who was on course, who had crashed etc. For discipline that struggles to find a way to provide live coverage this was a huge step backwards. A side point as well, pinkbike should have quickly added a summary to the bottom of this article of how the overall series stacked up once the race was over. I had to go to Vital to find out...
  • 2 0
@tomlynchwatson: good thing there are multiple news sources out there ;-)

How long did you have to wait to see photos and a race recap at the other site by the way ;-). Or should I say how much longer do you think you'll have to wait as there is zero content up from the race (other than the result sheet)

As for the EWS live timing I only use it to see updates after each sage while out working in the field. Never had it fail this weekend while looking for stage winners but that's all I was using it for and had quite a strong cell signal so who knows.
  • 3 0
@davetrumpore: i think we all just appreciate the racing, and the squids coverage, but we're pointing out the disparity between dh and enduro coverage luve. Obviously the nature of the enduro races presents a logistic problem but i think we'd all like to see the riders have more of a live show. The action they provide deserves to be shown. Lots of story lines this race in.particular
  • 1 0
@davetrumpore: You don't need to get so defensive ha. Your photo recap is great, and I usually just use pinkbike. I'm just letting you guys know that I had to leave to find out information about the series standings.
  • 3 1
 @davetrumpore:

Nothing against PB, this was an EWS issue. The EWS site gave AJAX errors every few seconds (on Safari and Chrome) It did not auto refresh. And as others said: zero news after stage 5. Normally they mention it when there are issues etc. I fully understand the difficulties of communication in a wild environment (living in Australia, there are many areas with no cell coverage just 15 minutes out of the city) but this weekend there was more going on than just the usual difficulties on the trail. Clicking away an error message on a live stream website every few seconds gets old quickly Wink

You just keep up the good work and don't feel offended Smile If EWS goes back to the the standard of last year with their website it already would be an improvement Wink

@patryka: Perhaps I was wrong but I'm pretty certain. We're both up to a -7 now. I guess we are both way out of line with our harsh comments..... lol
  • 16 2
Too bad there is no real live coverage of EWS. I realize its a logistical nightmare. it deserves some coverage. I bet 80% of us fools watching UCI DH and womens XCO at ungodly hours would be stoked.
  • 7 1
I’ve been thinking this all season. Other than that series on red bull tv, there isn’t really any legit tv coverage of EWS and I’m sure there are more people interested in enduro than DH due familiarity with the riding they do. Seems like a missed opportunity.
  • 5 0
@Adamt19: Nico Turner and team do a great job of quickly turning around the footage on EWS Pootube page.
  • 1 4
They could do a very good live show if they would seriously propose. They should do some live stages ( at least the last one and longest one) with start list of the current GC of that moment, leaving the gaps they made so you would have a stream of riders seeing the GC live from the air, like if you would be into the midle of a Mega.
Then previous to this stage you fill it up with interviews and action of every previous stuff.
Also drones today could help to cut down costs and access every where...
So really I think there is no excuse today for a proper coverage on MTBiking...
  • 3 2
@Adamt19: there's a 30 minute recap produced by EWS and posted to Pinkbike after every round the very next day... If you've missed them be sure to keep an eye out

I thought the rain might slow down Richie (based on past struggle in the wet conditions) but he is just destroying right now.
  • 14 2
I would like a side by side of Richie vs any of the other top 5 on stage 1. Would love to see if there's a handful of places he pulled out big time with big commitment or if it was just general pace the whole way through. Congrats to all regardless.

Training at Whistler and the hard push on top of the world really paid off for Rude and Neer. Familiarity and the as fast as possible strategy on a 20+ minute stage made it basically impossible for anyone to catch Rude as long as he stayed on pace

  • 6 4
@b45her: Honestly, it just sounds like you don't like Rude kicking everyone's butt. You might as well say, why have a second day of racing. If someone dominates day 1, it makes the second day irrelevant. It doesn't matter whether the first day is composed of lots of little stages or just one long stage. Plus, having a long stage really tests the riders stamina.
@smallsilences: That ignores that even on a 10 minute stage, a mechanical will effectively put you out of contention. It would be pretty boring if stages were all 2-3 minutes long. Besides, it didn't have any real impact for the top guys here.

No I don't like drugs cheats coming back when they are still benefiting from the drugs they took. It's very easy to keep the benefit of the drugs long after your ban period. Contador bring a classic example

well the benefit of being out for months because of peds is you have plenty of time out of the spotlight to get more chemical assistance into yourself. you only have to look at the guys physique and facial appearance to know he's been dabbling in all sorts of drugs over the years.
  • 14 8
@b45her: I Good had a friend in 8th grade that was a good 6 inches taller than most of us, was stronger than us, and already had some solid peace Fiss growing in his face. His physique was further along than any of us peers. Does that mean he took performance enhancing drugs as a 8th grader.

And do you really think that the time out of the spotlight he was not tested by any agency or sponsor?

He’s a beast, drug or no drug. He took a sip, he screwed up. Got “clean”, no he’s back.
  • 6 5
@b45her: Outside of pretty extreme cases of systematic doping in the 60s, doping won't really affect appearence, particularly for men. Extreme training regimens and nutrition will, though.

@slayersxc17: a head like shaped like a crt monitor and a sudden need of tooth braces in your early twenties are big indicators of HGH use.
  • 16 3
@chrismac70: you mean the over the counter stimulant that was found in workout drink mix? The two substances both if which only stay in system for a period of hours, an one of which is fully allowed in training just not in competition. Yeah those two... Those are the ones Richie tested positive for. The ones that last a few minutes/hours are still helping him months down the road huh? Maybe you should get your facts straight and you might "dislike" it less ;-)
  • 14 2
@b45her: correct me if I'm wrong... Did you just say that because Richie has a large head and had braces on his teeth a few years ago he must have been taking HGH as a teen? There really is no reasoning with some of you guys is there? Do your conspiracy theories know no bounds? Because it is getting downright ridiculous.

He's been a big strong kid his ENTIRE life and had braces in his teeth in his late teens like many many many people do... But yeah... HGH (rolls eyes)
  • 5 7
@chrismac70: Yep', I just read an article of a medical study saying that the benefit of certain drugs could remain in the body all life long, steroids for instances. As soon as an athlete who took drugs starts training, his muscle memory will grow some muscle fibers much faster than someone who never did drugs.
For now the study was on mice, but who knows, sports rules may change in the futyre because of that.
The article stated that EPO may be less concerned.
  • 12 2
@Will-narayan: @Will-narayan: but what about the two stimulants Richie ingested that can be found in over the counter pre workout mix? The ones that clean out of your system in a matter of hours and have nothing to do with steroids, HGH, etc etc? Remember that one of the two substances is 100% legal to use in training just not in competition... Both are known as "day of race" stimulants because they litterally do nothing and hour or so after ingestion ;-)

All that other stuff you are in about... No one in ews has tested positive for then so how is it relevant?

@davetrumpore: you just keep believing what you want, after all another far more famous american cyclist wasn't doping either was he.
  • 8 3
@b45her: and you think Armstrong was the only elite tour de france rider doping? Your a moron
  • 5 0
@b45her: What does the Tour de France have to do with this? Is Maes Maes more likely to be a doper because a Belgian roadie doped? Your reference to Lance Armstrong just shows how weak your argument is.
  • 6 7
@davetrumpore: yes, these two substances were found in his system and for those two substances he was rightly punished and he deservedly lost a lot of fans and reputation and respect.

He was a junior dh champion and ews winner and is around long enough and surrounded by knowledgeable staff to know the uci dos and don'ts. Negating this fact is sugarcoating his willingness and his teams disregard for the fragile image of dopingfree cycling and especially mountainbiking.

He is using poor excuses instead of showing true character and accepting responsibility for his actions. Just like every other cycling cheat.

Ace mtber but poor judgment

@b45her: man... You really are a piece of s**t aren't you?

Insinuating that the way someone was born and has looked since they were 13 year old is your evidence that they have been dabbling in performance enhancing drugs for years ???

People come I all shapes and sizes and compared to the general population of humans he's not even a very big guy (and still smaller than his own father if genetics matter at all to you). There are also numerous DH riders and freeriders of similar physique as well so what say you there?

It's one thing to have your opinions but spouting of this kind of crap as your "proof" just makes you an A-hole

@davetrumpore: just keep that head in the sand, the dude is a drug cheat fact, should have received a lifetime ban but was too big a name. if you believe the accidental ingestion crap your an idiot. wonder if all the muricans would be defending him this hard if he were from a different part of the world.
  • 2 4
@davetrumpore: when are you going to come to terms with the fact your favourite rider hasn’t got the same reputation anymore? He can still be your favourite rider and your more than welcome to give him the benefit of the doubt for the second time but don’t be outraged when others aren’t willing to do the same.
  • 1 1
@thenotoriousmic: These are my 2c. I think your characterization of what was happening is a bit charitable. This was about David challenging the histrionic attempts of distorting the facts (if not outright lies).

There is no doubt that Richie and Maes violated the anti-doping rules. But, there is no evidence that Richie or Maes did this intentionally or as part of a doping program. Nor is there any evidence that the particular drugs at issue conveyed any long-term advantage to either Richie or Maes. Yet, in a desperate attempt to diminish Richie's recent performance, people made wild accusations - referring to drugs that are not at issue (HGH), unrelated episodes of doping (Tour de France), or just made up statements that suited them without any facts (that Richie's ingestion of the drugs was intentional).

What I take away from the actual facts is that a mistake was made by Richie and Maes. A big mistake, but not one that is beyond redemption. I think deep down those who are upset at Richie recognize that, too. That is why they attempt to change the known facts and distort them into something else. That doesn't seem fair. So, while nobody needs to give them the benefit of the doubt, we also shouldn't give in to our worst imaginations.

 @EuroinSF: nailed it

When you have people saying that Richie has stopped his entire adult life and use the shape of his head and braces in his teeth as a teenager as proof it crosses a line. And that kind of BS needs to stop

@EuroinSF: I don’t really care about Richie rude. Got nothing against him but he’s got a doping ban so people are always going to wonder from now on. Right or wrong.

Stage 1 tho. Sweet Jesus, 20 minutes for the worlds top boys. At least 30 for me then, and that's not including the 2 stops minimum I'd have to make just so I didn't crumple from exhaustion onto my frame near the end.

@yuroshek: nope and now instead of a guy and a real cameraman at the finish, its just some dude with a gopro on a selfie stick...so lame ..

What a joke , you’d think Vail and UCI combined together would have enough money to have at least a dozen cameras on course for this event to promote the sport...

Last year wasn't too great anyway. A couple open stretches and the finish.

 @tuumbaq:

Yeah, it should not be that complicated to use drones to film and some camera med on the ground aswell. I´ll pay a lot to see that. I mean the places by themselves are so exotic and beautiful so don't have to be hardcore enduro/dh fan to watch EWS.

if Flo plays it safe, and no disaster happens... he'll keep the #1 spot.
What people should remember is that Hill started the series pretty weak, and during Ler Orres, the guy flatted 1st stage, and pulled back to 12th overall at the end... animal

@Lagr1980: Seems EWS actually updated the results pretty fast this time. Eddie in 2nd overall now. I actually hope Eddie wins. Flo 2490, Eddie, 2380, Hill 2315

@Giddyhitch: He got 57th last year... so pretty big drop in results.
  • 31 1
In 2017 he was 79th, and had gained 22 places in 2018. He had made up 3min on the Maes, with the races in in 2017 and 2018 relatively equal in length (18km). This year, the race was around 6km longer (24km), and Adam was 8:45min behind Rude. In 2017 he was 8:09min behind the winner, so per km he lost less time in 2019 on the winner than in 2017, but more than in 2018. Two riders, that were roughly equally placed as Adam in 2017 also raced in 2018 and 2019. Both of them (Trevor Thew and Sam Shaw) had made big gains in 2018, with advancing 10 and 23 places, respectively. Both of them dropped again in 2019 to position 70 and 67, respectively. Interestingly, both of their times are consistent with loosing around 18seconds per km. Adam was loosing 27sec per km in 2017, 16sec in 2018 and 21sec in 2019. Given his position, there seemed to have been more strong riders this year, than last year.
Disclaimer, this was done while making breakfast for the kids, so I hope I didn't mess anything up.

clean my ass. years of roids and HGH assistance don't simply go away after a few months. ever thought that the reason he didn't want the b sample tested is because of all the other shit they may have picked up under the stricter b sample testing.

@b45her: i'm sure he'd drop you/maybe anyone on a rigid singlespeed with the swine flu, even if you were roided up and riding the latest and greatest. not even a big fan, just seems likely.

i understand the social animosity towards idols who cheat and i won't say he didn't, but the logic's missing if you think it made that much of a difference in a downhill sport. i understand the margins between riders are still pretty small, but i'd be surprised if time loss wasn't more a factor of mistakes made on track than physical fitness. look at loris vergier then look at adam brayton. why is loris consistently a lot faster?

@bigwheels87: the benefits of doping go deeper than appearance, strange how the only stage he smashed everyone on was the one that would need huge (unnatural) levels of muscular endurance.
  • 4 3
@b45her: again, not trying to argue that he didn't technically cheat. just saying, it's not black and white and he's still one of the more talented mountain bikers out there at current. no HGH is going to make you good cornering, jumping, etc. deciding that his "doping" incident gives you any kind of objective merit for judging his current performance is giving yourself too much credit, at least in a sport where there are more factors at play than just power-to-weight ratios.

and maybe ask yourself/others why you're so offended by it? is it because you think if only i gave myself that advantage i'd be richie rude too? go for it.
  • 7 3
@b45her: B sample is not tested more sticktly. There would be nothing more found than in the A sample. It's the same piss and the same testing. The B sample is really just there to double verify the A sample should an athlete protest. And there's a snowballs chance in hell a B sample would come back negative, and really only if A sample had been compromised and accidentally tainted in testing. The B sample is basically just a back up. They elected not to have it tested because they were able to verify the two banned substances were in a pre workout powder you and I can buty at the store and take daily (lots of people do). It wasnt some crazy cocktail of roids and hgh as you have claimed he was on "for years"... So so so many details of this have all been published and explained. Why do you chose to not even remotely educate yourself? And why , without bringing yourself up to speed on any facts involved decide you're the expert and can make blind and slanderous claims against another person? It only makes you look like a complete fool
