Results: World Cup DH Lenzerheide - Qualifications

Jul 3, 2015
by Pinkbike Staff
SUMMARY

- Junior Men: There looks to have been a number of crashes up on the track, with many riders unable to finish and those expected with a fast time, crossing the line way back in the 10s, including the likes of Andrew Crimmins. Laurie Greenland crosses the line with the fastest time, 1.6 seconds up from Alex Marin Trillo, and 2.9 seconds up from Charlie Harrison.

- Elite Women: Ragot leads the Elite Women's field, with Rachel Atherton two seconds back. There's then a massive gap between these two riders and the rest of the field. Looks like the Lenzerheide track is proving to be quite a challenge for riders to get down cleanly on.

- Elite Men: Riders are on track and timings are tight. Riders are struggling to punch through the Loic-Gwin-Fearon bubble of the top three fastest times. Bryceland manages to clock the fastest time in split one and two, but crosses the line 0.8 seconds behind Loic. Aaron Gwin clocks the fastest speed through the speed trap. Brendan Fairclough appeared to have a DNF after reaching the second split but this has now turned to a DSQ. Meanwhile, Sam Hill makes it down the track and crosses the line in 68th place, 12 seconds off the leader. It's also worth noting that Kenta Gallagher qualified 17th today. Kenta made the move to downhill from XC Eliminator this year, and looks like things are going pretty well for him.

Hopefully Rachel doesn't have to jump over a van and someone standing on track in qualies!
  • + 10
that shit cannot happen on an event like this.... ffs
  • + 41
Fearon showing again he's got the pace and Bryceland shredding that top section! Looks like we have a good race on our hands once again.
  • + 2
She clearly ignored a yellow flag, but to be honest it should have been a red flag 'STOP RIDING' type of deal anyway. Meh
  • + 14
I wouldn't have predicted it for this season after the foot incident, but I do believe Josh might have a win or two. Fastest in the first two splits is a bit tasty. Woof woof! Go on son, get her done!
  • + 4
Have not been able to get that scream out of my head. Makes me wonder...

Is it Saturday or Sunday for the race?

the race is happening right now

Andrew Crimmins fastest at the first two splits and 18th (+13 secs) at the finish. Assuming he must have had a crash, hopefully he'll stay on the bike and take the win tomorrow.
  • + 1
yeah he had a big crash
  • + 6
Max in 4th. Keen to see him put down a good run
  • + 1
 Brendan disqualified?
  • + 4
yeah, he crossed the line after a clean run but didn't have his helmet fastened, its a shame
  • + 8
As a "professional" who the hell does that?
  • + 2
Not sure, maybe someone who's very focus on his run and forgets about doing his helmet up ?
  • + 2
f*ck first the thumb now this, is he protected and still racing?
  • + 13
Its called being human, we all make mistakes.
  • + 0
What a load of shit. He should say he just undid it for fuck's sake. Even when the coppers catch you for no seatbelt they just tell you to wear it next time. What a load of shit.
  • + 16
Awesome run from Kenta Gallagher in 17th! TV time boyeee!
  • + 11
Eddie Masters coming in hot with the 2nd fastest top split. The spirit of enduro? I'm wondering if Neko had a crash? He seems to be way off his pace this year. I hope he pulls together a great run tomorrow. DSQ for Brendog sucks to see.
  • + 9
Masters is a secret trainer, he works so hard but keeps the playful appearance up really well.
  • + 1
Judging by the first split, looks like Neko crashed somewhere up top. 8 seconds back but then on pace the rest of the way it seems. His timed training run was a good bit faster than the quali run.
  • + 3
gutted for neko. bad luck this season

flag stacykohut (Jul 3, 2015 at 7:55) (Below Threshold)
 bad luck?

is that what you call leaving one of the best trade teams in the world to go hang with 'some bros' on a sub par team with a sub par bike?

that ain't bad luck, thats called 'a horrible career decision'. neko blew it big time.
  • + 29
@stacykohut You have no grasp of Neko's decision and the factors behind it. He qualified 4th at the 1st WC, got a flat right out the gate.

He was also dealing with an early season injury he made no excuses for (did you see his wreck at Port Angeles?).
No "horrible" career decision. And no, he didn't "blow it big time".
Since I met him, got to hear his story and why he chose his path, let alone the fact he had the ability to choose it, I'm certain he made a great choice. His brother is wrenching for him and is a dang good mech at that.

The guy couldn't have been happier with his decision and that's all that matters.

Tone it down. Don't be a meat head. You just sound hateful.
  • + 3
Eddie will hopefully get his first podium tomorrow!
  • + 3
Hahaha, Gstaad Scott is "some bros"?
Last time I checked it was one of the biggest teams on the circuit with a whole bunch of people for just two riders, I'm not sure Trek has more.

And the quality of the bike is beyond question, nobody who rode it would say it's bad!

only time will tell if it was just an off the cuff remark, or if its reality.

a podium this year would make me eat my words.

lets see if it happens.

will neko reach his potential on that team?

hateful? nah. skepitcal of that team and that bike? you bet.

hows the focus on winning and team intensity with scott/gstaad?
  • + 1
Are you kidding? You don't even back your own rubbish statement up "time will tell if it was..off the cuff...or...reality"

And your comments about the bike, oh let me guess you ridden one, compared times, picked holes in the geometry, weight vibe etc.

Brendog seems to go be going really badly.....

Sure twr is awesome too I'm sure, but just maybe neko has had other issues? Or maybe he has yet to achieve the performance people have expected on any bike? I'm in the latter camp
  • - 3
so,how did the race go today for the scott gstaaad boys?

back what up ? its bench racing, you new to the racing world? cricket player in your youth?
maybe rugby?

bench racing, been doing it since 1995/96 with the wc mtb dh series.

and sweet to see minnaar hand the kids their asses today, been watching him since he was on that blue kona i believe waaaaaaay back at big bear.

so again, how did neko do today? podium?
  • + 2
top 20. thats pretty good. especially considering massive crashes from both neko and brendan. you seem to think podium is the only good outcome. since both of them moved to scott they've been consistently improving in my eyes. especially with neko. having hiccups and mechanicals i think can be extremely demotivating. to see him stay consistent means his mind is in the right place. well done gstaad/scott team
  • - 3
neko got beat by a junior.
  • + 1
so did greg williamson (twr)...OMG! and the other 62 elite men above the 3:05 as well. what does that mean?! TWR is horrible race team! all these racers suck and should just give up! god a junior beat them.. pathetic, right?
  • + 1
@stacykohut did Neko steal your girl or something? You seem pretty pissed off eh?
  • + 0
i am a fan of mtb dh racing. i have my faves. ol double chin neko ain't one of em.
  • + 1
Making fun of people for no good reason? @stacykohut you're a meathead. Hating just to hate...that makes you pitiful.
  • + 1
Hahaha. I didn't think there were any angry Canadians. I think we found the one.
  • + 1
you guys are graspin at straws. i'm just a passionate fan who has my faves and loves to shit talk those i don't like. neko, rahal, milsaps, pastrana, kyle busch,.....racers i don't like and will shit talk anytime i can. its called bench racing. that is all.

Nailed my prediction (for the Scott frame) for the women's race... in qualification. I peaked too soon Frown
  • + 2
I got mine correct for the mens so far! Looks like there is gonna be sick racing!! Can't wait!
  • + 6
I vote for a qualification championship. Loic is killing it! Or someone let him ride directly in final. He seems he has the perfect pace in practice while final is too quick or too slow.
  • + 10
completely agree, it's gutting how he's been first in qualis so many times and not got a single win to his name yet, Allez Bruni!!!!!! tu vas y arriver cette fois
  • + 8
The action of qualifying first and then crashing in finals is called "pulling a Bruni".
Funny thing is, he said that himself in an interview at Ft Bill
  • + 5
It is really awesome that Łukasik took a place that high, it is even more amazing if you consider that he races there for his own money. NS dissapoints me with that "sponsorship" of theirs...

Yeah Blenki! To Blenki's fan team: time to light some candles.
  • + 7
Top 50 are within 10 seconds! Going to be tighter than a ducks Arse.
  • + 10
I won't ask how you know that. Wink
  • + 8
 YES RAT
  • + 3
The top ten male elites are separated by only 2.5 sec! It is easy to imagine anyone of those guy could putting down a winning run. Fingers crossed for a tight race with some great start to finish camera coverage.
  • + 2
Ya. and Gwin is only a half second faster than his timed training. The track must be getting blown out
  • + 4
I think a tactical slower quali could have been good, it looks like the track is going to be blown apart. Should make for a good race with the fastest riders having the worst of the conditions. We may have an unexpected winner.
  • + 1
I agree, even when you look past the top 10 there are still plenty of guys that could take it.

Looking at those times I don't think anybody deliberately played a 'strategy'. It's certainly been done in the past and there are precedents for top gun riders crashing/mechanicaling(?) their quali run and then putting a winning run together on a 'fresher' track with an early race run.

I like to think that if you are going for the overall you grab as many points as you can. Plus I bet those guys can predict how a track will wear on race day and adjust their lines to suit.

Deep down inside I'm hoping Sam Hill played tactics and is secretly on fire.
  • + 6
 Loic @ the time!
  • + 1
OK, So, who thinks gwin will win the overall this season...?????? HaHa i do an hope so! But i really hope he has a shot at worlds this season, his ass deserves it! Really hope he can get that takin care of, than he will truely be the best! Go GWINNY......
  • + 5
Ed Masters .. crazy first split !
  • + 3
Is the DSQ just for qualis or does that DSQ you from the race - disregarding protect status or not? Always a bummer to see a DSQ
  • + 1
I'm not sure how it works. I know he's a protected top-20 rider and he did start his qualies run, which would mean he should be in finals tomorrow. But I'm not sure if a DSQ in qualies works the same way as a DNF. Hope he's in tomorrow...and feeling solid at that!
  • + 1
Aaron was DSQ in Lourdes during qualis. As long as you pass the start gate, a protected rider can race. He may do well tomorrow, being one of the first elites down. Go Brendog!
  • + 2
 Sorry for the typo. *Brendawg
  • + 5
Bryceland blatantly braked hard for that last bridge jump
  • + 4
Check the women's time gap between 2nd and 3rd rank. Huge step.
  • + 2
Step? More like a chasm. I'm thinking if it doesn't tighten up for finals, the chasm will be even bigger. It's obviously a Ragot-type track and there isn't much that Atherton can't tame. The rest of the field must be having some struggles with the techy sections in the woods???
  • + 2
Seagrave crashed, that's why she's so far back
  • + 3
It looks like it will be a battle between Emmeline and Rachel for the ladies' win.
  • + 4
Josh first in both splits. Hope he can nail that bottom section tomorrow!
  • + 1
I'm with you on this...also afraid to watch him hit that final jump tomorrow. :/
  • + 2
Where's Mik Hannah? Fast wide open dry track like this should suit him. His injured finger should be healed by now.
  • + 3
whens the actual race and is it going to be on red bull tv
  • + 3
The race is tomorrow at 1430 CET (so that's 1330 for the UK)
  • + 2
Blimey, it's on a Saturday, never seen that before
  • + 1
 so that's basically a perfect saturday schedule : morning-riding, afternoon-world cup, night-party
  • + 3
Sam Hill will be sitting on the hotseat for a very long time tomorrow.
  • + 2
The next 19hrs is going to be pure torture - the racing should be off the chain!!
  • + 2
Haha i feel ya there man.
  • + 4
 GO FEAROOON!!!
  • + 1
Kind of figured he just had a good day last race, but it looks like he's actually improved a lot! Would love to see him take a win
  • + 1
Leogang's almost win gave him a huge boost and confidence. Hope he can keep it up!
  • + 2
What happend to Fairclough, why DSQ.In timed training he crashed.I really hope he can can get a podium in the finals :/
  • + 1
 Is he prequalified?
  • + 1
he is 21 in rankings, so not a protected rider. Sucks.
  • + 2
I dont think so.It says that he has been disqualified,i have no idea what happened Frown
  • + 2
he is actually 11th but, yeah it sucks
  • + 2
He's currently 21st in the rankings, but running the no 11 plate - as I think that's this seasons position.

Not sure which one they use for determining the protected riders. Anyone?
  • + 9
Article 4.5.031 of the UCI regs state "Riders ranked in the top 10 women and the top 20 men elite on the current world cup standings (or final world cup standings of the previous season for the first UCI world cup round of the season), are “protected” for the finals. They must start in the qualifying round but qualify automatically for the final in any case. If the times of the protected riders are not among the 20 best times for women or the 80 best times for men elite, they must ride the final in addition to the 20 women and 80 men elite already qualified. All junior women who started in the qualifying round are qualified for the final."
  • + 1
yeah, 21. is Brendan's last year season's ranking, but I cant seem to find the standings for the running WC. Link anyone?
  • + 8
Guys, scroll down to Brenden's name on the list. There is a "P" in front of his name which shows he is a protected rider. DNF or DSQ, he will be in the final.
  • + 3
DSQ'ed due to his helmet not being strapped on for his run. He's protected and will race tomorrow. No top-20 start, so you won't be able to see his run on Redbull.tv - unless, of course, he has a burner and is in the hot-seat. Let's hope that's the case!!
  • + 4
Last year at European Cup he won on this course so there is a good chance he´ll get a good spot(atleast top 5 I hope)
  • + 3
 Come on Harry Heath !!,
  • + 1
Insane to see a local riders name in the top 80 qualifiers for elite men WC. Drop the hammer Luca!!!
  • + 2
anyone else spot that their UCI code is their date of birth ?
  • + 2
 nice spot, that's funny
  • + 3
I guess that makes it Joe Smith's birthday tomorrow then?
  • + 2
and it's also Charly Di Pasquale's birthday
  • + 1
What's sad is getting up at 5:30 is not out of the question for me to watch this...going to be a close race!
  • + 0
Who on earth knows why the Syndicate team name is always left out when they make the list every time? Frown It's one of the biggest teams in the pit isn't it
  • + 2
Loads of people know :p The Syndicate was denied Trade team status because their riders don't use the same jersey design. 'Officially' they're all privateers this year as far as the UCI is concerned.
  • + 2
Almost top ten Stevie gettin there!
  • + 1
A few crashes after split 2 it seems. Crimping and Grundy falling victims to the dust?
  • + 7
Darn auto correct, Crimmins and Grandy that was.
  • + 2
Hill 68 must of been cruising or shoulder still playing up
  • + 1
That men's time sheet is really easy to use. Thanks for the update on Hill! Go Gwin and Troy!
  • + 1
Go Gwin, break a le... sorry, a chain!!!
  • + 2
 Well smashed Laurie!!
  • + 1
Weird how it doesn't show ratboy or Gregs sponsor now.????
  • + 1
They're not a trade team...not this season, at least. The UCI stripped their status due to their kits not being "uniform". Therefore, they don't get prime pit locations or their team listing for the riders in the results.

One would think that's petty, but it's just the UCI.
  • + 2
 RIDER 81!!!

pretty close to what I thought
