A Muddy Good British Trail Ride - Video

In Britain, winter is often the time we wait. To summer, dry trails, road trips and races. Waiting for holidays to dusty more mountainous countries whilst envying the films and photos from people not restrained by the darkness and regular cold rain of the British winter. In waiting however, we overlook what golden opportunities we have right now.

Winter is the time to embrace the local. Forego long hours traveling and instead getting out and riding your trails that have been reinvented by winter. So what are you waiting for?

You brits have a funny definition of winter. In Ontario we just call that October.
  • 40 3
Based on how my UK friends describe their weather, it looks more like "summer". ;-)
  • 69 2
Every time you say it's cold, out of nowhere a Northern will appear to tell you it's not.

Winter? no gloves? knickers?, Winter here ski gloves, woolies insulated shoes and shoe covers, skull cap, frozen camel back, it still holds spares, carbine studs, and if you don't move fast you will be part of the landscape frozen solid.
Same but different.
You got to love bikers

Here in San Diego it has been raining. Winter has come by golly!

In case you did not realise, no.1 British pastime is: moaning about the weather. It's nowhere near as bad as made out compared to many places, pretty mild usually, no doubt the farther north you go the colder and wetter it gets.
  • 14 3
That isn't a proper winter ride, there's no rain! Watch a winter's hard tail for a better idea of what winter is like, and the weather down in Costa del England is usually way better than what we get in Scotland
  • 15 2
@mikecawsey: in this case I don't think anyone is trying to prove the Brits suffer more than anyone else. Just simply that it is winter and yes it sucks but look how much fun you can still have out on your local trails.
It's easy to get bummed out in Winter (no matter where you are) but I suppose what we can take from this thread is that some poor sod always has it worse than you do!

@ThomDawson: to be fair to you Brits that video showed a rather nice side of your mud. I haven't seen the proper grease in there. Fkng clay that made me think I've learned absolutely nothing. I will never forget the first encounter, coming into a steep greasy chute with a berm on the bottom of it and then realizing that chute was nothing now I have to deal with off camber on that sht. You have to live it to appreciate it.

Have to admit I was waiting the whole video for the mud. Last time I tried to ride my local trails I ended up to my hubs in slop Big Grin

I dont mind the cold, rain, mud and darkness, what I'd like is a mechanic to clean and service my filthy bike and kit.
  • 5 0
Its winter if it drops below 25c over here, would die instantly in those temps
  • 18 3
Well we're not stupid enough to base our definition of the seasons purely on what the weather happens to be doing at the time, that's for sure - we "define" Winter by reference to this thing we have in the civilised world called a "calendar",
  • 10 1
@KeithReeder: nail on the head there brother. It's not a dick swinging contest who has the worst winter. This was filmed in January- therefore winter. Wasn't overly wet unusually for this time of year which was very pleasant.

@ThomDawson: Wise words here, thanks for putting things into perspective.

Kind of like an Ontario October... but without all the whingers predicting the apocalypse if anyone dare ride in the rain. (Side note ... It's +9C and foggy today... British as f*ck)

Quite frankly I am waiting for Four Men of Yorkshire kind of chat about who has it worse with trail conditions and still rips.
  • 2 0
 @WAKIdesigns: lord poncenby,yorks don't chat they grunt .
  • 4 0
I wouldn't know about that but .. *mumbles something about drainage in the lower field.

@WAKIdesigns: clay/chalk is my local soil type and yes you be right greasy as f*ck and unpredictable but fun.

You see those kids riding machine dug trails in the summer and if you told them that when you were their age you rode off camber corners with mud and roots on a rigid bikes with cantilevers and Kendas, they would never believe you! There were no bridges over dikes! When they get the mountain a lift or a truck waits for them. When I used to get down the mountain my father would be waiting there ready to beat the crap out of me with a broom stick and drag me behind the horse to the asbestos factory to work the night shift!

@WAKIdesigns: beat the crap out of you ,dragged behind a horse ,,,haha made me chuckle.

Add rain, crank deep water and mud and you get a better idea. Some gnarly mist in this one Wink

@jimmythehat: check out the latest Sketchy Sunday from Caldwell Visuals on his Facebook. That's my vision of British Mud Big Grin I mean this video here was cool to watch, ver eye pleasing piece of motion picture but if someone wants the hardcore I guess this Sketchy Sunday gets close.

@WAKIdesigns: LUXURY! in Brazil if we wanna ride we have to build our own bike from bamboo sticks and glue the joints with old chewing gum from the ground... And to ride we have to go early in the morning, like 2am if you don't want to get robbed in the trails! I used to do 250km with only a scoop of dry flour that I had to eat the whole week. And when I got home my dad would hit me with a dead dog and shit on my face!

@diegofcm91: and look at us now... for the price of air spring tuning kit for my Lyrik, my grand dad Alois Buchtyar could buy five soviet tanks, hire a party of armore men and invade a large part of Czechoslovakia!
  • 2 1
Yes but have you ever had your arse fingered while cleaning your bike afterwards.
  • 2 0
@Earthmotherfu: no, I did not keep my bikes behind Bishops house... poor you

 mmm mud

That's just good, clean fun right there! Nice. Great tune......(I was optimistic about a little road gap action there)

Riding and music that make you want to boogie....

Seriously awesome video, I loved that! Good vibes, good riding, and good film/edit. But to answer your question... I'm waiting for the snow to melt (a solid few feet of it!) We should be able to ride bikes on some of the lower elevation trails by mid-April here in Whistler Wink
  • 1 0
Yeah heard you've got a melt on right now though right?! Nowhere riding in van or squampton yet? It might get shitty and wet over here but rarely ever so bad you can't ride so we can't grumble too much. Glad you enjoyed it dude!
  • 8 0
No dog walkers, horse riders or joggers. Perfect...
  • 6 0
Was really hoping for a sweet road gap @ 1:30 but otherwise this video was really well done!
  • 7 0
Nice video. Some great riding too. White socks though. .. lol
  • 2 0
Nowt like the local? If your the local trails are a mixture of super slick chalk and claggy clay you might think differently. On a local ride recently I had to stop every 100 metres to ungunk my drivetrain. That got old pretty quickly.
  • 1 0
Agreed - here in the NE of England the boulder clay is a fecking NIGHTMARE. I'd MUCH sooner have proper cold, and hard-frozen trails - a piece of piss to deal with in comparison.
  • 2 0
Well that sounds very unfortunate to have that soil type my man. We are fortunate to have all sorts just along the amber valley so can pick and choose at our leisure regardless of the weather.
  • 1 0
@aiken: Luckily I'm not too far from the North Downs, much better riding there, especially when it's wet.
  • 1 0
What a nice video! Was expecting something a bit different though, like many others before me. I myself prefer the sub zero winter riding much more than the murky and muddy counterpart. In the late autumn, when the mud gets really bad and cement-like, I always comfort myself with the thought that soon it will get cold and the trails will be faster than ever. Unfortunately the getting cold part seems to be further and further away year..
  • 5 1
beautiful atmospheric film but thats not mud thats perfect riding loam / leaf mold
  • 3 0
it's all relative. it ain't perfect or ideal riding weather, but they can ride still. and they do. very well. that's the point of being a British rider eh.
  • 3 0
Winter or not, it's one of those edits that makes you wanna grab your bike and get out.

Or regret not doing that earlier when you had the chance... Frown
  • 1 0
That was fun. He really was slapping it in the squiggly turnso. Loved the fun riding and chunky dirt. Yeah, I was distracted by the name of the video talking about cold winter and a pic of a bare handed rider...but the riding got me over all that. Rut bang that thang!

Recently moved to England and I'm amazed how good weather is. It was around -11 and snow back home ) hoping to get my CX bike here sooner and enjoying some local riding )))
Cool video , like the fun factor )

Lovely edit and great riding Smile

Mud??? What mud?? I commute to work on my Mtb in PA through a local state park. I run Maxxis beaver tires on my bike because I routinely have to pedal through derailleur deep mud! On a daily basis. For all you Brits out there I run Hope brakes, hubs, and BB. Because they rule! They hold up to all the crap I ride through and never complain.

 Cool story bro

Well done on your commute and choice of rubber. Tell me more?

My favourite bit was about the skate park. Tell it again.

That story is so inspirational, I'm gonna make it into a meme.

Is there any chance you could dictate that into some sort of audio book for me? I'd like to be able replay it when I'm feeling really down. Thanks.

@russclark: so funny the reaction to my comment. Glad you liked it!

  • 5 0
I do have a hardtail and ride it locally mate and can confirm, with some conviction, it is not fun I'm afraid. Far better on a trail bike.
