Lorenzo Suding Critically Injured in Car Accident

Jul 5, 2014
by Matt Wragg
Italian media are reporting that Italian DH national champion Lorenzo Suding, who races World Cup DH for Team Norco, was criticially injured in a car accident in Italy Friday night (4 July). Details are few in the news reports, but it is reported that his Fiat Scudo van mounted the pavement, hit a planter and ended up on its side. Suding had to be cut from the vehicle and is described as having suffered "politrauma", which is an Italian phrase used to describe multiple injuries. There are not reported to be other passengers in the vehicle or other vehicles involved. Doctors are quoted as describing his condition as critical but stable, a phrase used to describe serious but not immediately life-threatening injuries, but will not release further details at this stage.

You can read the full report on ansa.it (in Italian).

The course is much more all-round downhill. I m happy. With the really tricky rock gardens I guess now we finally have a challenge for everyone and a chance with proper downhill bikes. I m even thinking about taking off the dropper post

We'll bring you more details as we receive them. The thoughts of everyone here at Pinkbike are with Lorenzo, his family and friends at this most difficult of times.

The cruel irony in doing something as dangerous as downhill racing for a living... And then it's something as trivial as driving a car that brings your life in danger... All the best wishes and healing vibes to Suding and his family - you'll be back faster and stronger!

I was thinking the exact thing. The Irony is so perplexing. I met him in MSA a couple years back. Great guy and he is such a fast and talented rider. Get well soon Lorenzo. www.pinkbike.com/photo/9510620

awful. and despite dh being very dangerous...driving a motor vehicle is an incredibly, awfully unsafe activity. more people killed annually in car crashes than died in the World Trade Center. every. freaking. year.

 like 10 times as many.

That's exactly what I say when people tell me that DH is so risky... Life is risky. Any of us could get hit by a milk truck on a given Tuesday, and what would we really have risked?

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Lorenzo... You're a monster, you got this!

Similar story was the crocodile fella Steve Irwin use to wrestle with crocs and then got killed by a sting ray while just scuba diving life's risky just keep living until you die

Lorenzo is a great guy that I had the pleasure of shooting with for a couple days this year... He is such an driven and optimistic guy and was incredibly motivated for good results this year... This is incredibly unfortunate and I'm wishing him and his family the best in this situation..

I feel much safer off road than on road. I've only myself to consider when biking off road, not having to worry about bell-end sh1t drivers taking my suit of light.

I hope he gets well soon and ride again. Just a note Matt, politrauma is not an Italian phrase but a Greek word. The meaning is correct though.

Exactly Windsurf. I was there for two weeks a couple of years ago and was amazed at the craziness of drivers. Cars, construction vehicles all speeding through the city streets along with scooters buzzing in and out of traffic.

And what exactly are you implying with those comments?
  • 3 0
Not implying anything, just saying there is some crazy driving over there. .
  • 3 0
Story said no other drivers involved. We can speculate that he lost control while avoiding another car, animal, fell asleep, distracted by electronic device, food , etc.. But, its just better to say prayer, send good vibes, and wait for the facts.
  • 1 0
My comments were not directed at what caused this accident just the driving habits I have seen just as Windsurf commented. I wish Lorenzo a speedy recovery.

Oh I got neg propped.. ahahaha... for what?! Insinuating that maye someone does not get it that in some geographical locations on earth there is quite dramatic terrain offering little space per nr of inhabitants who are particularly active and horny as opposed to... hence fast and skilled drivers in small cars on narrow curvy roads? hahahahah
