France's Loris Vergier takes you for a lap on the DHI World Championships course in Cairns, Australia at the 2017 UCI Mountain bike World Championships.
@BenPea: I'm not that familiar with the specifics of how each drone's features work but I think its a little further out, not something that will fly like a few feet behind the rider. i don't think the reaction time of the drone and the signal is precise enough for that. It would be more like 20 feet up and 40 feet behind, stuff like that. Which is why it cant be used going through woods.
@sino428: just increase the altitude higher than the tree line, zoom in and use a thermal camera at night or in a cold climate. They shot Predator vision in the jungle but had to fix it in post so you could see.
UCI, you are truly pathetic. You demand all the money and perks to hold a race, yet cannot get a simple preview correct? Loris should have been outfitted with appropriate gimble for his GoPro/camera. Redbull, with all it's faults, makes you guys look amateur at best.
i agree this preview sucks, and UCI sucks in general - but it's pretty hard to ride at a certain level with a chesty gimbal setup (probably why Claudio's previews don't use them either - also is why nate hills is a legend)
@weirc: Well a chest cam at least. UCI are a bunch of crusty crooks and give zero sh*ts about anything but roadies and draining $$ from any other two-wheeled sport (MTB, BMX, etc.)
UCI is run by a bunch of out-of-touch weekend warriors (and that's being kind). They f*cking suck. I would like to hear one redeeming quality of this organization made up of greedy, self-serving a*sholes.
@mollow: LOL All praise our dear leaders the UCI!! Without them there wouldn't be a MTB industry or top-level DH racing! Everyone including photographers wouldn't make any money without the UCI! God bless the UCI!!
@mollow: awww you're cute... Uci constitutes 7-8 weekends a year. Crankworx, FMB, Enduro World Series, etc etc have zero UCI affiliation. The sport would be as good or better without then... And since you sound so concerned, I'd still have no trouble paying the mortgage ;-)
@davetrumpore: I'm curious why the WC DH people hadn't gone fully independent of the UCI, EWS did it, and they were pretty successful so far, dh had been in mtb longer yet cant seem to pull it together without the uci,
@makripper: I'm not sure I follow? uci DH had been around since the early 1990's. As for coverage before RB we had freecaster, and prior to that some pretty terrible coverage via OLN in the states, or if you were lucky you could find coverage on Eurosport (most of which are now on YouTube and quite eye opening as to the roots if the sport). The biggest part the UCI has played over the years is with sponsorship. The WC has not had a title sponsor in 10 years since Nisan left (if you don't count them getting scammed by Rocky Roads). Anyone who has spent years around there races can plainly see the lack of effort they now put in, and if it were not for Red Bulls investment I'm not sure the UCI would be able or willing to promote the sport and bring it to a large audience. Until the UCI matches the passion and commitment of others doing the work to grow the sport, then it will remain at a standstill with the same old venues and tracks, limited to no outside sponsor interest, etc.
@davetrumpore: for an example see the UCI coverage of the 4X World Championships. Utterly f*cking diabolical. Wouldn't trust them to find their arse with both hands.
@WaterBear: the track gets a bad wrap because of the bottom and the finish. The fist half really is quite good, but once riders get to the whoops at the mod point the track pretty much turns into a basic flat trail ride.
@davetrumpore: Based on the Vital footage it's got some steep sections at the top that lend to some huge looking drops / gap jumps. The rock garden has always looked nasty to me as well.
Yep looked like handlebar mount to me. I've mounted a camera to my headtube before but it wasn't this bad. I got about 2 mins in till my gut cried for mercy.
What a wild finish!! You could just hear him laying the power down on those cranks!! Couldn't think of a better way to finish the season off than a downhill world champs where you have to pedal to make it across the finish line. Lame
So we go from last year, the best course preview I've ever seen, with Claudio, Peaty and Warner riding Val Di Sole to this.
UCI you should be ashamed of yourselves, as I'm sure you would be if you actually gave a flying fuck about our sport.
...that was like watching a Bourne Supremacy fight sequence from inside a washing machine. I'm not sure who won, but for some reason the woman sitting across from me on this train is covered in puke.
In my opinion, a WC DH course should be at least gnarlier than the average rider would be comfortable on. I'm well below average, and the Cairns course looks like fun to me. Oh well, it's still racing, and we should appreciate all the hard work & extreme risk that each racer had to endure throughout the season to be there for our entertainment. Go Danny! Go Greg! Go Tracy!
Other than one Little Rock section this course looks like it could be doenon a 5-6" travel bike. Get a light bike out there and with all the pedaling they have to do it should help with the quick accelerations out of some of those tight turns. Also that has to be one of the weakest and un-suspenseful finishes in DH!
The course doesn't look too difficult. There was one rock garden and mostly flat out speed jumps. Other than the blown out dry dusty conditions it's a pretty tame course. I'm hoping that this is the year Aaron gets his stripes.
I'm hoping the camera lied, but that looked like one dull DH track, might have to miss getting up 10 minutes after getting in from my night out ? Oh well, not long till my next fix . . . . . . Bring on Rampage.
That track looks amazing. Probably the most progressive and challenging dh track out there. Wow. Blown away.....
At least Gwin is used to the dust. Looks like some easy Californian trails.
Not sure how realistic that video makes it, but it looks like the course could be done on a cruiser. Where are the roots. rocks, and technical sections? Looked like a bobsled course that was fully polished.
Welcome to the internet, I see It's your first time here.
People with positive things to say, smile and keep it to themselves.
People with negative things to say, say it, over and over again.
Yey airdogs!
What's an airdog? Doesn't matter. Make it happen.
Why are gapers so good at being clowns?
Please no more handlebar mount previews.
definitely a bar mount.
Ssrsy, if you can only flip on a single Go-pro at a time at least stick it to his head.
They also forgot the Slow-mo, The Super-Slo-mo and the Live Instagram feed.
Go Danny! Go Greg! Go Tracy!
Also that has to be one of the weakest and un-suspenseful finishes in DH!
"whinge whinge Fing whinge"
Having rode the track over the past month, Its great to see the pros absolutely ripping it.
