Lost in Translation - Taipei Show Randoms

For every booth containing the latest in cycling technology, there are ten more full of gaudy plastic accessories that no sane mountain biker would ever purchase.

photo
Did someone say gaudy? DaBomb's DH bike isn't going to win any color coordination awards.

photo
This faux leather covered full face helmet was one of many options Chiuh Shen Co. had on display. Leopard print was another available color choice.

photo
Just what you always wanted.

photo
Danny Hart's 2011 Glory was outside of the Giant booth, the same model he piloted to victory at the World Championships in Champery.

photo
There's no need to ever true these babies, but the weight penalty might have you wishing you'd sprung for wheels with spokes.

photo
Carbon fiber folding bikes - for the upscale bike commuter.

photo
The perfect accessory to a folding bike might be this folding helmet from Morpher. Aimed at commuters who would otherwise leave their helmet at home, the Morpher is expected to retail for around $100 USD.

photo
MacMahone's booth was full of 'unique' frame designs, including their 150mm Pluriel all-mountain bike. It's certainly been a while since we last came across a HammerSchmidt equipped bike.

photo
There's probably a better way to display grips, but this method was definitely interesting.

photo
Yet another attempt to re-invent the bike seat.

photo
photo
There's something oddly familiar about these company logos.

photo
The stick and duct tape brooms of the janitorial staff stood out in stark contrast to all of the carbon fiber and electronics gadgets on display.

Stay tuned for more from the 2014 Taipei Cycle Show.

Lars Ulrich aint gunna like that sign....

Haha, that reminded me of the old "Napster, baaaaad" cartoon.
  • 5 0
For real. I see call from a lawyer in your future soon..
  • 3 1
Nah, I won't be surprised if it's a way for Metallica to earn some extra cash on the side Smile

Napster may be bad... but "money- GOOOOOD!"
  • 11 2
I don't understand why giant didn't bring out the glory frame with those colours. Unreal.
  • 30 1
I dare them to steal the Specialized 'S'...I double dog dare them.

"So you think you can just take our band name huh? Like we won't notice huh? Huh, you're going to hear from our lawyer. Huh, huh, HUH?" - Lars Ulrich

Welcome to China where intellectual property law is made up and the trademarks don't matter.
  • 12 3
 Taiwan....
  • 1 0
Haha that's the first thing I thought, is anybody courageous enough to steal any of the spesh properties?
  • 6 3
Ah, Taiwan... duct taped brooms, Gaudy accessories, ripped off logos, and knock off capital of the world, and yet get them to build our bikes.
  • 6 0
dadsbudz- I believe China holds the title of knock-off capital of the world... seriously, Taiwan doesn't stand a chance against htem. Also don't knock on bikes built in Taiwan, the factories there are pretty advanced and the whole process itself is insanely well done. Plus they do provide some comical stuff. That helmet looks like a robe belonging to a 1960's drug dealer.

No big deal. People like to hate on things that they know are better than them. Envy has many ugly faces. Those who aren't envious haters can just sit back and laugh (all the way to the bank) at all the people embarrassing themselves by complaining about what they don't have or can't do. Thank you for your money Big Grin

scott-townes, I wasn't knocking the quality of the bikes, I realize all the big bike companies build them here, I just found it funny after looking at the pictures in this article of the duct taped broom, and such, we get them to make our high performance bikes.

still trying to figure out the dynamics of MacMahone rear suspension after 10 mins...WTF ?
  • 14 0
le bras oscillant tire sur la biellette sous le cadre qui bascule l'amortisseur. La biellette supérieur est inutile.
lack of english vocabulary.... Anyway macmahone is a shitty french brand.
  • 7 0
This top link is not useless, it makes the rear triangle stiffer. But I agree, too complicated frame !
  • 4 0
big bit pivots and pushes the small bit which pivots another bit that pushes the shock.
  • 7 0
It looks quite simple in how it functions but there are so many pivots it would be anything but simple to maintain.
  • 7 0
even if mcmahone is shitty .. they can't win over swiss' s Redalp ... (pun)
  • 4 0
yeah ok...i really don't see why having so many linkages...especially the lower and upper ones....totally useless in my opinion. in the end this is just another iteration of the monocross (i don't see no horst links or short links), with 7 links. O_o
  • 4 0
The rear triangle looks like a single piece design. So the top linkage and the bottom linkage move at the same time in order to sread the load and lift the end of the shock upwards while it is compressed. It's a complicated design and looks somewhat unnecessary but in what the linkage does, the top and bottom pieces are not useless.
  • 2 0
yeah from what I can see on compression the rear triangle rotates at the main pivot near the crank the rotation of this clock wise moves the top part forward (as is obvious with the link up top). As this rotates clock wise the small part that extends past the pivot will rotate clockwise and pull down towards the BB. This pulls on the green link up the frame which rotate that while peice clockwise which compresses the shock.

Id draw a picture but I cant be bothered haha.
  • 4 0
can you have more moving parts?
  • 13 0
At the end of the day, it's just a single pivot, right?
  • 2 1
psxkid think so. it's like slidways describes it. the upper rotates counterclock wise, while the arm of the main pivot pushes the shock. it's the lowest link i really don't understand...the upper can increase stiffness ok, but the lower link, parallel to the lower tube, that really makes no sense to me. just added weight and complexity
  • 2 0
@pdxkid - Exactly what I was thinking...so much for simplicity. Wonder if it works any better than a Heckler...
  • 3 0
Yeah just looks like an overly complicated single pivot design. I think their designers are incapable of understanding simple geometry. It looks like the upper link adds extra stiffness, okay. The rest just drives the shock to create a custom leverage ratio and rate which is entirely unnecessary.

Also, it's ugly as hell.

Also, also, who wants to replace that many bearings for maintenance? Not me....
  • 2 1
.. or morewood izimu.. orange and rose
  • 1 0
Weirder still is the old build - Lyrik & seatpost are from three or more years back, as is the Hammerschmidt. Who builds a show bike with old parts?
  • 1 0
Is it just me or does the rear rotor look larger than the front?
  • 2 0
Seriously, at least slap some new grips on there...
  • 20 0
WOW that broom!!!!! looks amazing, is it in development or is that the final product???? a must have for the 2014 season
  • 17 0
Already got my order in, picking it up just in time for the Quidditch season Wink
It comes with a shorter rear end for better cornering.
  • 15 2
Yeah, I'm getting the enduro verson, with slightly wider and bigger broom end for added snobbery.
  • 4 1
its gotta come in at 27.5/650b or else its rubbish (no pun intended, hehe).
  • 4 0
^ this guy just made my day

  • 10 0
Oh I like this word Dabomb which sounds like a big breast girl in Chinese
  • 1 0
I like the word orange case no other word rhymes with it…. except for norange.
  • 3 0
 and blorange
  • 7 0
 ......doorhinge.....
  • 2 0
Glenmorangie Scotch rhymes with Orange. Orange you glad to be told that?
  • 2 1
 Lozenge?
  • 3 0
“People say that the word orange doesn't rhyme with anything ... I can think of a lot of things that rhyme with orange," said Eminem, seated behind a mixing board at his private recording studio, before effortlessly conjuring an on the spot rap about putting an “orange, four-inch, door hinge in storage" and having "porridge with Geo-rge.” Haha Google for the win!
  • 1 0
Sporange, I kid you not, real word, rhymes with orange, look it up
  • 7 1
Would a faux leather helmet not have serious friction issues in a smash?

Surely one wants the material on the outside of a lid to skate over and glance off of as many things as possible?!
  • 4 0
 but fashion!
  • 3 0
Mosso is a fork and frame maker, you see their stuff on ebay a lot from chinese dealers. I own one of their carbon/alloy rigid forks. They're well made and pretty light for the money if you need a fork for an older mtb with short travel geometry.

Bike Attitude is part of Sunrace. Drivetrain bits like cassettes and freewheels among other things. The cassettes are good value and nicely manufactured and now that shimano's HG ramp patent has expired Sunrace is using it.

All I got from this article is that Taipei would be a pretty fun place to go out drinking in. Chances are you'd wake up the next day in a William Shatner themed Karaoke bar, wearing a janitor's overalls, clutching a fluorescent parasol. Or something.
  • 2 0
 you're not wrong
  • 5 0
That morpher helmet would be perfect for me the liason stages, at Trans Savoie
  • 6 0
That DaBomb looks like a rainbow got drunk and threw up.
  • 1 0
haha agreed. it seems like a decent bike though if you look past the hideous colors and graphics.
  • 5 0
Does it feed nipples, or does it feed you nipples?
  • 1 0
Both Danny and his girlfriend put pictures up quite regularly on instagram of the 2011 world champs winning bike with the number plate still on it, its also hung on the wall in their living room and is decorated at Christmas. Something fishy going on there...
  • 4 1
Looks like da bomb hit it!
  • 3 0
2011 Hart Giant Glory??? Why? We are in 2014!
  • 4 0
Pretty sure he puts pics of this bike on his IG hung up in his bedroom, so its probably not even the real one!
  • 1 0
Aren't china making lots of carbon folding bikes now? I'm sure they are marketing them as mountain bikes though, until you drop off a curb
  • 1 0
Judging by the only functional/useful part in this post {the broom} has the mountain bike evolution finally gone full circle? except for enduro of course
  • 6 4
Not gunna lie, that DaBomb still looks better than my Bottle Rocket....
  • 2 0
I would kill for a automatic nipple feeder
  • 3 0
#uck that manual nipple feeder till I die!
  • 2 0
 That folding helmet is hideous!
Also that seat... WHY?!
  • 2 0
 butt rest
  • 1 0
They should make a pillion seat, like you get on motorbikes.....
  • 1 0
the folding helmet has huge potential within the commuter market and it will sell well guaranteed
  • 2 0
the dabomb frame is, without any doubt, a Canyon Torque FRX.
  • 3 2
But unlike Canyon Da bomb geometry is crap ! The top stays are almost in the same direction than the link, putting all the force in the down tube instead of the shock.
  • 1 0
anyone know what those small things are on the chainstay of the DABOMB?, they look like a rubber bumper of some sort?
  • 2 0
Can't wait for morning food nipple!
  • 1 0
Finally! We've had top shelf folding tires for decades… it's about time that bikes, helmets and lawn tractors caught up.
  • 2 0
Now that... Was an ugly article.
  • 2 0

  • 1 0

  • 1 0
The only thing cool was the GLORY!
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
I want to know what the Bling Bling stand was selling.
