Lusty Maxxis Team is Back for 2017 and Ready to Fire

Dec 19, 2016
by Matt Staggs

Nothing brings a team back together more than driving through the night on route to one of Australia’s alpine MTB parks, trying to avoid hitting all the animals on the coat of arms.

After a successful campaign in 2016 the Lusty Maxxis Team regrouped in the Alpine town of Thredbo, New South Wales to launch for 2017.

This year the Cannonball MTB Festival has exploded, going from roughly 300 competitors to more than 600, the event has well and truly cemented itself as the premier gravity festival on Australia’s busy race calendar.

There are five events to try your hand at; An All Mountain Race, with a 7km descent to test DH and Enduro specialists alike; the Pump Track Challenge; Flow Motion Cup, a 5km all out sprint to the bottom; Whip Wars bringing some ‘show’ to the night and the Downhill, the ideal place for Australia’s top DH riders to see how they are tracking leading into the 2017 world cup season.

Getting off the chair at the top, puts you at almost 2000 meters above sea level and close to Australia’s highest peak Mt Kosciusko; what better place to hurtle down the dirt with your mates and try to snare a slice of some solid prize money. Unfortunately the first day of practice didn’t go exactly to plan with high winds shutting the lifts, lucky there was a jump to hit down the mountain in Jindabyne. Whips and cases ensued.

Race Roundup

Lusty Maxxis back once again and ready to fire

Cannonball was a great weekend all round with the many of those novelty-sized cheques finding their way to the Lusty crew. Joel Willis chose to focus all his energy on the Downhill which paid off in spades, after qualifying 6th he stomped his run to end up 5th on a very stacked podium.

Remy Morton managed back to back titles in the Pumptrack and a solid 9th in the DH after having a break of the big bike in recent months.

Young gun Patty Butler managed to end up on the podium for the U19 division in all but one of the events he entered. His scorecard showed a win in the Pumptrack, 2nd in the Whip Wars, 3rd for Flow and a respectable 8th in the DH after having a terrible day right from the start.

Jackie managed to snag a 5th in the All Mountain, a 10th in the Flow and survived the Downhill on her Roubion to round out her year of racing.
